How To Draw A Butterfly: Step-By-Step For Kids

Learn how to draw a beautiful cartoon butterfly in just a few easy steps!

As a nursery school teacher of over thirty artistic 3-5 year old girls, my "unofficial job" is to whip up dozens of fun drawings for them to colour when we aren't holding our lessons. One of their favourite subjects, along with princesses, ballerinas and mermaids, is the beautiful butterfly. Children adore butterflies not only for their almost magical quality, but also because their wings are decorated with so many patterns and shapes to colour. In this article, I will be teaching you how to draw a butterfly step by step for your kids. If you learn how to draw this butterfly, your girls will have hours of fun colouring her in! What's more, if your child is artistically inclined herself, this tutorial can help her learn how to draw butterflies as well! All drawings property of Heather Broster. Please feel free to download and colour them, but do not claim them as your own!

1. The Sausage Body

To begin your beautiful butterfly drawing, draw a diagonal sausage-shaped form. Have the bottom half of the sausage come to a tip. The top left-hand part of the sausage should have a slight indentation. This will become the point that divides the butterfly's head from its body.

2. The Face and Antennae

The face and the antennae are probably the easiest part of drawing this butterfly. Draw two round eyes and a happy mouth with smile lines on either side where the head sits. (The head is defined as anything above the small indentation we included in step one.) For the antennae, draw two curly lines popping out of his head. It is very hard to go wrong at this step!

3. The Stripes on the Body

For this third step, draw however many lines you like across the body of the butterfly. In this case, I have chosen to draw five stripes. Make sure they are slightly curved so as to give your butterfly's body a 3D appearance. If you draw them straight across, your butterfly will look flat and unrealistic.

4. The Six Legs and Feet

Next to the wings, this is my favourite part! Choose three of the lines along the body from which you'd like the legs to emanate. Then, from each of your chosen lines, draw a curved line coming out from the left side of the body as I have done here. These will be his right legs. Next, draw the adjacent leg coming out from the same set of lines. These three legs should emanate from the middle of his body. Finally, draw a circle at the end of each of his six legs. These will become his "butterfly booties"!

5. The Wings

The wings are ever so much fun to draw!Start by drawing two leaf shapes coming out of his body. The top leaf shape should be larger than the bottom leaf shape. These shapes will make up his left pair of wings.Next, draw a single leaf shape that sits between his antennae and his left wing. This will form the upper part of his right wing. He's almost complete now, so don't give up yet!

6. The Design on the Wings

Here is the very final step - the step in which you can go mad with your own patterns and designs! Fill your butterfly's wings with various shapes. In this case, I have chosen to draw in a number of fun geometrical shapes as they can be educational, and children love to colour them in. However, you can choose to create whichever design you please! To download a copy of this butterfly for your kid's to colour, just click on the link below!
