Valentine Garland Using Raffia: Easy and Beautiful
I love the looks of raffia in crafts, so this Valentine garland, made with mini string lights, raffia and hearts is exactly the look I wanted. This garland could easily be used in decorating for a wedding, a bridal or baby shower. It would be a nice addition to a teen girl’s room. String the garland across a mantel, along a banister or over a mirror. The raffia garland is simple and inexpensive to make. It is outstanding when lit.
Follow the tutorial below to create a little romance with a beautiful Valentine themed, lighted raffia garland.
35 clear string lights
Package of natural raffia
Red tissue paper
Empty Tp roll
Silver and red glitter
Add Raffia to String Lights
Divide the hank of raffia into six hanks. Starting on the light end of the mini string and using two of the raffia hanks, tie the hanks on either side of the first bulb. I used a short piece of raffia to wrap around and tie the two hanks and the string light.
Half Way Raffia Tie
With the string lights in the center of the two hanks of raffia, wrap and tie a piece of raffia about half way to the end of the raffia hanks.
Add Raffia Hanks
Overlap and place two more raffia hanks on either side of the light string and continue, wrapping and tying along the way. Use the last two hanks of raffia to finish to the end of the lights.
How to Make the Silver Hearts
Crumple a sheet of tinfoil and then carefully straighten it out. Glue two sheets of tinfoil together on the non-shiny side. This gives the heart more body. Cut heart shapes from the tinfoil. Make a small hole in the center of the heart, to place the heart over a mini light. I applied small dots, lines, etc. on the hearts with white glue and then sprinkled them with silver or red glitter. Allow to dry before placing over mini lights.
How to Make the Open Silver Hearts
Cut a tp roll into five equal pieces. Cover with a piece of tinfoil, by placing a strip of tinfoil around the tp circle and folding to the inside. Shape the circle into a heart shape. Add a bit of white glue to the outside of the heart and add glitter. To attach a silver open heart to a string light, place the heart over the mini light and, using a long piece of raffia, thread the raffia through the wire loops on the string lights and tie. The light should stay inside the open heart.
How to Make the Tissue Hearts
Lay two sheets of tissue paper together, cut squares (2 to 2.5”).
Cut Heart Shapes
Fold the square (two pieces of tissue) in half and cut a heart shape.
On one, or both hearts, apply dots, dashes, etc. with white glue and sprinkle with silver or red glitter. Keep the two hearts paired so they glue together perfectly. When dry, apply a line of white glue around the edge of one heart and glue to its partner heart. Leave a small opening to slide the heart over a mini light and glue in place.
Consider Making String Hearts
Watch the video below to see how to make string hearts. I think the string hearts would look beautiful fitted over the mini lights in the raffia garland.
