Minor leagues a refreshing throwback
by ericsomething
Minor league ball reminds me of the way the game used to be. No millionaires. No contract haggling. No Steinbrenners. The players dream of The Bigs, and will play hard to make a good impression. They love the game. And, tickets to a game are a lot less the ten-spot. Try finding that in the major leagues. You might find it worthwhile to check out a minor league contest near you -- particularly if you wonder whatever happened to The Game. published 7 months ago
Guest column: Depression and weight linked
by ericsomething
This essay is a little different in that I didn't write it. It's reprinted, with permission from the author. I didn't have to go far for permission; my mother wrote it. This is a talk she gave at a TOPS (Take... published 9 months ago
For a change, good online adv(ICE)
by ericsomething
If you have an email account and friends who send mass mailings, you have probably heard of putting ICE on your cell phone. That's a directory entry, slugged as ICE (for In Case of Emergency) that you can put on your cell phone and emergency personnel know what it is should you be found unconscious somewhere.Whether this started out as an urban legend and grew legs to the point where it became fact is immaterial here. It's one of those things that, well, it won't replace other means of ID or kee published 12 months ago

Back from "the hellhole"
by ericsomething
He'd done a tour in both Afghanistan and in Iraq. On the whole, he'd rather be in Philadelphia. "Iraq is a hellhole," he said. "A real hellhole. Afghanistan was a cakewalk by comparison." Politically, the place is way beyond unstable, and our troops are doing things that are out of their league. "Our soldiers are doing police work over there," he says. "We're not trained for that." Like in Vietnam, our troops are fighting an increasingly unpopular war, and facing a brand of warfare t published 13 months ago
All-juiced team will probably beat yours

It's more than a solid team; it's the stuff of Murderers Row. Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Jose Canseco, and Troy Glaus provide the power. Roger Clemens anchors a decent starting rotation. Eric Gagne puts the... published 13 months ago
Take-no-prisoners editor remembered
by ericsomething
He wasn't a real big guy, but sometimes giants come in a smaller size. I still remember his gravelly voice, the kind you can get only after so many cigarettes and so many emptied bottles. And when in full... published 13 months ago
On being a collector of stories
by ericsomething
... I realized why I drive a taxi. See, and all this time I thought I was just doing it for the money. Not so. I like talking to people and listening to them. I'm a collector of stories. Everybody needs a hobby, just like everybody has a story. In a way, it's a perfect job for a former journalist. published 13 months ago
Jazz 101: A Listener's Companion
by ericsomething
(This was originally written as an email to a friend of mine who wanted to start getting into jazz. Of course, I had to answer. I've since saved the email, sent it to a few other folks asking the same question, and edited it for this space here. Enjoy!) published 14 months ago
Enough to worry about? Check this out ...
