Ask DJ Lyons: 1969 Chevy Camaro

1969 Chevy Camaro

Do you like vintage cars? How about muscle cars? Do you like muscle cars?

When I attended my first car show held back in 2009, I discovered another one of my interests. I found it fascinating to wander around and see the various models and find out just how old they were. This one, this 1969 Chevy Camaro, was one of my favorites.

It's possible that I selected this one as yellow is one of my favorite colors.

My husband, who was born in 1952, tells me that this particular car was considered to be some of the first muscle cars. So he would have been 17 years old when this car was made. Most sixteen and seventeen year old kids would definitely know a thing or two about that.

The Merriam-Webster gives this definition: "Any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."

How old does a car have to be to be considered a Vintage Car?

As I viewed this 1969 Chevy Camaro, I began to wonder. Just how old does a car have to be to be considered Vintage?

The car show I attended was in 2009. So at that time, this car would have been 40 years old. Is that long enough? Did the owner of this car just get into the car show by the skin of his teeth? It really makes me wonder.

I decided to do a little research with the trusty search engine, my personal favorite, called Google. I Googled it. I think that is now considered a real word.

Here is what I learned.

A site that calls itself Classic Car shared this point-of-view:

(1) A Classic car is between 20 and 45 years old.

(2) An Antique car is over 45 years old.

A site that calls itself Antique Cars shared this point-of-view:

(3) It agrees with the first site about Antique cars. It also states that an Antique Car is over 45 years old.

(4) They mention a Veterans Car era. As I understand it, those are the cars made before 1905.

(5) They also mention a Brass Car era. A Brass Car era, according to this site, is a car made between 1905 and 1930.

A site called Car gets more specific. They state, "The definition for a 'classic' car differs depending on if you are getting the definition from a car club, insurance company or Department of Motor Vehicles."

(6) So according to a car club, a classic car is a car made between 1925 to 1948. They do have a list of exceptions; however, that appears to be their prevailing premise.

(7) So according to an insurance company, a classic car is at least 15 years old, is stored in a garage when not being driven, and is driven less than 2500 miles per year. I suppose that is just enough miles to make it to the various car shows. In other words, you do not use this car as an everyday car. They have other requirements as well. You can click the above link if you are curious to hear more.

(8) And according to the Department of Motor Vehicles, a classic car is at least 15 years old and an Antique car is at least 25 years old.

According to one site on, a Vintage car is one that was made between the time of World War I and World War II.

So, what have we learned?

According to most of the sites I visited, this 1969 Chevy Camaro definitely fits the Classic definition by most of the sites as long as they reserve this car for car shows and do not use it for their regular transportation.
