Carver One - Car Or Motorcycle?
A few years ago the Dutch company Carver Europe BV unveiled the 'Carver' as a concept vehicle. Then, a couple of years on and after good reviews the Carver One was released as a production vehicle.
The Carver One is a vehicle which you sit in and steer like a car but which leans like a motorcycle on corners.
It was to be built at a rate of 500 hand-built examples per year by Carver with the assistance of Prodrive, who are probably best known in motor sport circles for masterminding many successful world championships for Subaru in the World Rally Championship.
Prodrive worked hard to ensure reliability was available and many components were improved for the new production run. Final assembly of the Carver One took place in Germany.

The Carver one was powered by a four-cylinder Daihatsu engine of only 660cc, but which comes with four-valves per cylinder and turbocharger, but only a five-speed gearbox.
Performance was claimed to be 115 mph top speed and a 0-60 time of 8.0 seconds. And just like a bike the passenger sits behind the driver in a tandem configuration, rather than side-by-side as in a car.
As Carver's were all hand-built each could be customised to suit the owner's desire for paint, trim and engine tuning.
The Demise of Carver
Unfortunately like much new technology it was expensive and sales didn't take off, especially as the price rose to around £35,000 which no doubt helps to explain why only 200 were sold before the company was forced to declare bankruptcy in the middle of 2009.
A pity as it seemed popular with those who drove (rode?) it including Jeremy Clarkson, the infamous British motoring journalist, who said of it: "I have to say, absolutely hand on heart, that I’ve never had so much fun in a car, really and truthfully, and I don’t think I’d ever tire of it."
