Yester Year Technology!

40 + years this is what we had to signal our friends of obstacles and evolving events and as you might notice this technique would be useless in the size groups we see today and are very slow to react with only small groups.

The Way Of Tomorrow!

In this video if you study it a bit with this new warning and alert system could have saved 30 to 60% of the bikes that crashed!

This system not only alerts to a red light condition the moment something happens automatically and also other riders can send an alert with one button push. Now if that is not good enough, I wanted to back that up with the same technology that the major airlines have used for years and has just got to a price that makes it feasible on a new design product like this one!

The First Two Screens!

The first two screens are identical with the exception of the bikes configuration whether a single file patters due to possibly danger ahead or a special turn like a U-Turn. Notice they are both in a green state and tells all the other riders that we are good to travel.

Women represent 10% of all motorcyclists. That's 1 out of 10 riders, or another way to slice it: 4.3 million of the 23.5 million people in the United States who operate a motorcycle are female.

And the number is even higher among buyers of new motorcycles ranging up to 23% for both Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson. These statistics were issued by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) in its recent ownership survey.

Motorcycles are more mainstream than ever. Since 1998, there has been a 34 percent increase in the number of motorcycles - estimated to be about 8.8 million motorcycles - in use in the United States.

  • Women are increasingly becoming part of the motorcycling landscape. Female motorcycle ownership is up to nearly 10% of the total motorcycle owner population. The percent of female ownership increased from 6.4 percent in 1990 to 9.6 percent in 2003.
  • The median household income of owners exceeds that of the U.S. population as a whole.
  • More than half of motorcycle owners are married.
  • More people on two wheels than ever before. 24 million people in the United States rode a motorcycle at least once in 2003.
  • Of all the motorcycles in use in 2003, 43% were purchased new, up from 33% in 1998.
  • More motorcyclists today have college degrees and work in "white collar" jobs. The median age of today’s rider is 42, up from 38 in 1998. 29% of today’s riders have college degrees, compared to 23% in 1998.
  • Sportbike owners spend significantly more on aftermarket purchases, including tires, repairs and maintenance, replacement parts, accessories and modifying equipment, and riding apparel.

The Economy!

The economy affected U.S. sales of new motorcycles in the first quarter of 2009, down a total of 30.5 percent, compared to the same period last year, among 12 of the leading brands. Generally affordable, fuel-efficient dual-purpose motorcycles declined the least, by 24 percent. The off-highway market went down the most, by 39.7 percent, some of which is linked to the government's ban on youth models due to a controversial new law regarding lead content in consumer products.[

"There are still many customers wanting new motorcycles, both veteran riders and those wanting to join in the fun and gain the benefits," said Tim Buche, president of the Motorcycle Industry Council. "But, in reaction to the economy, there have been some production cuts. And the lead ban turned many parents away from buying new dirt bikes for their kids. There's a need for wholesale financing to help keep dealerships supplied with inventory, and a need for consumer credit to loosen up so that dealerships can get those new bikes out on the roads and on the trails. It's very hard to get retail financing now, even if you have good credit.

The early year sales decline follows a relatively flat year for motorcycles. The MIC's preliminary estimate for all motorcycles and scooters sold nationwide in 2008 is 1,087,000, down just 3.3 percent compared to 2007. Sales still topped the one-million mark, and did so for the sixth straight year. That beat the longest run of million-plus sales ever recorded by the MIC, during the five years from 1970 to 1974. Also, scooter sales last year reached their highest annual level ever, currently estimated at 222,000. Among the major brands, scooter sales through the first quarter of 2009 were down 36.7 percent compared to the first three months of 2008. The on-highway market declined by 27.3 percent.

Rank

Retail, with more than 15 million employees in America alone, is one of the largest industries in the world by number of businesses and number of employees. Retail sales in the U.S. (total retail sales include the categories of gasoline, automobiles, and food service, as well as merchandise) will show a slight decrease in 2008, totaling about $4.400 trillion according to Plunkett Research estimates. Sales were $4.482 trillion in 2007, up from $4.307 in 2006.

Introduction of Corporation and Direction!

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

T.L Tedford Enterprises Inc. is a start-up company focused on developing the "Motorcycle Group Alert" as their first product. The Motorcycle Group Alert device would be used by motorcycle riding groups to manage group riding events. Currently, when groups of riders get together for a fun ride, it is virtually impossible to keep the riders flowing along as a cohesive group. The leader can make contact with them using cellular phones but in many cases, the cellular phone coverage is spotty, leaving large gaps in the information flow. The Motorcycle Group Alert would allow riders to communicate their riding status to their fellow riders and improve the capability of the lead rider to be apprised of the group’s cohesion as well as to adjust the group’s actions to compensate for issues that have occurred with individual riders.

T.L. Tedford Enterprises Inc. concept of the Motorcycle Group Alert is shown below.

What a Day!

The Human Element!

Now I want to discuss some issues that we encountered during almost every ride. As we discuss the issues encountered we need to understand the individual rider and the comfort with passing down hand signals back to the riders behind them. This from what I have concluded is a large part of the problem with information flow needed by not just a few of the riders but every rider in the group. Now once you understand the human element and hesitation to perhaps someone not wanting to be under scrutiny and to how or even to understand what these signal are. It takes due diligence to each rider to study these signals and to apply them during every ride.

This in not wanting to throw any blame to any rider but just to introduce the human element and the reaction time for the group as a whole when signals are not passed back trough the group.

Changes In The Way We Communicate On The Way!

As always when new trends are started we will also see improvements to the way that we try and fix what really does not work as well as they did before. Now in this case just in the last 10 years we have seen these groups grow more popular than ever before with motorcycles.

Now we have looked at the motorcycle riders that have been riding over the years really building and starting groups of their own to improve their enjoyment when riding in numbers but as stated above was very hard to pull very many folks into a single group but when they did they found a whole new experience that just added to what they already had a passion to do. I was there and it was great to get larger groups together to ride with and enjoy more riders.

Now let’s flip the coin over and see what has had a vast impact on motorcycle sales. I believe that the idea of buying a bike was driven by the idea of group riding and getting to go with some of their friends that will talk of the fun they have in groups they ride with.

Evidence of this can be proven just by asking around to bike riders about this and see what they tell you. There will be old time riders and new ones and just see what their motivation was to buy a motorcycle. I’ll bet you will find things just as I have explained here just to validate the claims made in this article.

Can you believe that with this alert device you can have all these groups and they will all have their own address so there will be no confusion between groups? WOW

Can you believe that as long as there is a bike in range of all the other bikes for hundreds of miles the signal (Alert)will make it all the way to the front leader? WOW

Thanks for for stopping by,

Terry

This is where we are headed as far as the esthetics and function capabilities!

“Motorcycle Group Alert”

The Perfect Companion for Motorcycle Group Riding:

The “Motorcycle Group Alert” is an innovative group riding electronic product that has been designed to improve the capability of the lead rider to be apprised of the group’s cohesion and to adjust the group’s actions to compensate for various issues that are occurring with the individual riders.

A rider, needing to update their status, simply pushes the button that describes their evolving situation. The encoded signal is sent to all radios in range. When the encoded signal is received by any radio in range, the controlling computer deciphers it, lights the appropriate switch, and sounds an audible alert. The audible alert cycle on and off at a 0.5 second interval for 10 seconds and then the light goes on blinking and the audible alert is discontinued. This alerting function is enough to draw attention to the changing conditions on the system.

The Motorcycle Group Alert Handbook:

This handbook is furnished for getting you started with the use of its capabilities and learning your own method for other uses. Each riding condition can dictate how you use it and should help with all organized rides to enhance the group experience in a positive manner and enhanced enjoyment for the whole group on every ride.

Unit Capabilities:

1. This unit is equipped with the latest technology in the market today making this unit the best it can be. We actually held up development to reorder some of the parts to upgrade it to the newer chipset.

First thing is to setup your own addressable network when you receive your unit. It will only take 1 second to set. It will then show the random address in your screen. From here if you are the ride leader then the others when you are in the same location can set their units to match yours as easily as you set it. Note: This unit will assign as many addresses that is needed so all groups would in no way interfere with the next group. We believe that if a precision ride for show could coordinate even be better with this unit as well. All available addresses in range can be searched until you locate the one you are looking for. This new addition to your ride group is now a part of the network you were assigned during initial setup and that means it is time to ride.

2. The display is designed as a touch screen unit for all operations with the exception to the on/off button. Next this I am happy to report is that as far indoors or out in direct sunlight lends no adverse effect to your visibility of the screen.

3. This unit is also designed for protection from outdoor elements with water resistance as you might would expect.

4.This unit is also equipped with a repeater built-in so that your alert is passed on and on to compensate for loss of line of sight due to foothills, mountains, out of range or any other reasons. This could allow your group to be even 100 miles long or more as long as there is a unit in range it will push the signal forward and ensures all riders get an almost instant update. We are looking to add a temporary antenna that you could use if you really need more range. This would be an add –on in the accessory section on the website when completed. We need to do final testing before we state an accurate claim on the inside antenna range and I do not think you will ever need to extend it.

5. Now we have the events we attend and that is one more area we have addressed with this unit by making the mount a quick release so it may be carried in the shirt pocket, purse or pants pocket. You can follow recommended light signals to address your members at the events or you can easily formulate your own. Be sure you let the group know what the lights will mean in this case. You should have no problem hearing an alert going off with the audible alert tone so you will not miss the communication when sent.

6. Now for the last item to discuss would be the groups orientation as to single file or standard riding formation due the frequency that this is used for safety circumstances that occur during the ride. I have included an extra signal that would send this signal as well and this would use the audible tone also when changed.

This unit should last on standby for approximately 60 hours on one charge. Depending on how much use it gets will be the factor in use time. NOTE: The permanent wiring harness will be available if you want it. This would be an add-on in the accessory section on the website when completed.

Box Contents:

1. Motorcycle Group Alert Device.

2. 110 Volt plug in charger.

3. Mounting Kit With A Quick Disconnect. (This kit is designed to mount your unit on approximately 90% of all bikes right out of the box.)

4. Battery.

Areas of Standard Use:

1. Group Riding Alerts

2. Event Group Alerts

Basic Signal Suggestions for Group Riding:

· Green – The green light should be used during the ride and indicate that the group is ready to proceed.

Yellow – The yellow light should be used during the ride and indicate that the group needs to ride slow and wait for the formation to reform. Last rider to return in formation should signal the group and leader that we can proceed as agreed in the pre-ride briefing.

Red - should be used during the ride and indicate that the group need to follow the leader and make a stop as soon as possible. When the leader finds a good stopping spot.

Blue – The Blue light should be used during the ride and indicate that the group needs to find a nearby fuel stop to accommodate the smaller bikes with less distance than the larger ones.

Remember during a controlled ride it should be understood that the leader makes all decisions as to where and when the stop will be made. The group of riders equipped with The Motorcycle Group Alert will have the same information as the leader and can anticipate the next move for the group.

Advanced Signal Uses for Your Group:

This is where we explore some other uses available to you with your new Group Alert device. This unit is equipped with a quick disconnect for your convenience for taking in to the house for recharging or any event so you can get your signals while away from your bike. The next one in line would be when you arrive at a motorcycle event with your group there should be some instructions for everyone’s benefit and understanding to the signals they will receive for their return to the group’s parked motorcycles.

Green– Default for unit on standby and indicates no alerts.

Yellow– This you might use to let your group know that they have let’s say 20 minutes until the groups departure and they should make their way back to the groups area during this time limit.

Red– Might be used to indicate 5 minutes until departure for the group. ( Last Notice )

Green – Going green after this series of signals would indicate that the group is rolling for those that would not be ready to leave with the rest of the group.

Remember feel free to work out your own signals at this point but just remember that when any rider decides to ride with some other group they need to get an update of signal uses that this new group may use. (Remember this is intended to bring organization to your ride and greatly enhanced communication)

What a great idea! Man, this device sure is a must for group riding. It can sure prevent a lot of heartache and suffering if used as intended. Not to mention half of the group getting split up by some moron in a car and the back half missing a turn.

No group can ever be completely organized, as you know. The more bikes in a group, the greater the need. This sure is the answer for that problem!

My club usually limits a group to 8 riders maximum, usually having one of the larger bikes in the lead and on drag. Goldwings are nice for this, while us wimpier riders, cower in the middle. LOL

Knightheart ,

Lol...I know what you mean...100 miles if you are lucky!

Thanks for you comment on my hub. I am putting a lot of info on there so the pro site builders has the info they need to get it started.

By the way I hope to go live by june @ www.motorcyclegroupalert.com. So keep your eyes open for it. I think it will be all it is now and more with some updates I am looking at for the upgraded model. I am just getting ready for the molds to house the electronics and I have my Mfg lined up and ready to start putting them out.

If you do get one I would like to know what you think about it after you use it.

I like these type of questions and I think I will try and do a good deed for these folks that take the time to comment or email. Hmmmm

Question:

Jeff,

Just a note from an email inquiry on the availability of this new signaling device for groups. “Have you made any progress on making this into a product? I am interested in something like this device.”

I responded: Jeff,

I have indeed got this under way and working hard to make this ready to go live on the internet by June, 2011. We will try very hard to have it all done by then.

Thanks a lot for asking about it and planning on getting one. If you have looked over the site then you know a lot about what it is good for.

I do have a question for you! What do you see as the most needed part of this product? If you feel like it let me know that would be great.

Terry

Reply from Jeff!

I thought about this a bit more on the way to work. Here are some additional features:

1. Waterproof - Yes it is

2. Ability to relay signals to all devices on the same channel. - Yes it will through the repeater system from bike to bike. This is how the range can go so far through a repeater System.

3. Battery life of at least 20 hours (perhaps slow blink when no alerts, but steady light for yellow/red/blue to save power) - Yes the unit will have 60 to 70 hours of standby time!

4. Ability to hard wire into motorcycle.

There is going to be a hard wire accessory you can get to hard wire if that works better for you. I think there will be a lot of folks that will choose that way to go.

5. Quick-release to allow storage while off bike (reduce theft) I also will bring this up as well about the quick release and why it is there. First of all the release is for just as you stated to avoid theft. Next you can slip this unit in your pocket at an event and send an alert to the group on the ground that the group will be heading out and if they are going to stay with the group they should make their way back to their bike in a predetermined time limit. Hope you like that part of the programming of the unit!

6. Range between any two devices of one mile (assume one minute to react to a condition at 60 miles an hour is one mile) agreed!

7. Out of range indicator alerts if no devices in range. Should have the range indicator on the display!

8. Standard charging device (ipod charger or mini-USB charger - I don't want to carry yet another charger with me)

This unit as stated before is good for at least 60 hrs of standby you should be able to go on 2 – 3 rides on a single charge or get the adaptor cable for full time duty. (this cable will be a small quick release as well so you can take it with you.

9. Large buttons for gloved hands access - The alert buttons will be - The alert buttons will be situated 1 in each corner and large enough to activate with your gloves on with no chance of hitting the wrong button. Now there will be a clock, compass, temperature readout and even what day of the week it is.

Regards,

Jeff

It took a while for the back portion of the group to reattach to the main group. We had no way to signal to stop to let everyone know we should continue or that we should stop. This is the most annoying part of a run to me.

Later on the ride, we had horrible rain. My wife and I pulled off and just waited it out, but the others continued. We could have pulled off at a gas station, but none of us had a good ability to signal the lead bike.

I would like to see a low-cost, easily portable from bike to bike device that basically does what your unit does. It should be able to retransmit from unit to unit if any of them are out of range of one another. That is, if the first and last bike are out of range, but a middle bike has a device, a signal from the last bike should be relayed to the first bike.

If you are interested in having someone beta test your device, I might be interested in helping out. My wife and I travel often with another couple and cannot communicate with them. My wife and I use a Bluetooth device whereas the other couple uses CB radios. We plan a couple of long trips, so would have a chance to use them often.

Have you considered a "dead mans" tether? Emits a signal when the rider gets separated from the motorcycle. Primarily for the sweeper or tail end rider(s).

Cable attached to the rider and inserted into the device. When cable is pulled from the device, most likely a "man down" situation.

A tether is ok but we have the technology to detect any such occurrence of an irregular stop and/or erratic movement would auto alert the group to the situation!

You are thinking in the right area of safety that this product was created for.

Thank you for your input.....
