What percentage of fuel does the car’s heater and air conditioner consume?
Very minimal. I can't give you a percentage, but according to Mythbusters it's actually more fuel efficient to run your A/C than to have your windows open. Basically the A/C compressor just piggybacks off of the crankshift spinning.
The answer is, they don't. The engine and electrical system are not one and the same, although running the engine starts off the dynamo. Heaters/ventilators in vehicles work on the same system as the radio and other dynamo-dependent elements. In older vehicles, like Land Rovers, the heater was mechanical and could be run when the engine had been turned off. Do not leave the heater or radio on for long in winter-time without running the engine, as the battery will deteriorate. (Sounds like a car manual, doesn't it?)
