How to Successfully Purchase Used Motorcycles in the Houston Texas Area

Just like purchasing an automobile purchasing a used motorcycle in Houston Texas can be a very detailed and lengthy task. Taking your time and asking the right questions and know what to look for will almost always result in a successful used motorcycle purchase.

First figure out what category of bike you are interested in like a Harley Davidson cruiser, a sport bike like a Suzuki GSXR-1000 (aka a crotch rocket), Dual Purpose or on road off bikes like a BMW. Maybe your interests are purely off road and are looking for a KTM, or Honda dirt bike. After you have narrowed down your interest or category start scanning local want ads, craigslist.org, cycletrader.com, chron.com, etc.

Once you have picked out a few possible used motorcycles from the ads, then click on over to nada.org to find the current market value and compare it to the asking price. Depending on local economic situations, and time of year you can probably get a lower price than what is quoted in the NADA guide. You will almost always get a better deal on a used bike during the winter. People seem to only want to own their two wheel fantasies during warm weather.

Unless you are very experienced mechanically with motorcycles have a professional shop check the bike out for you. If you are very serious about a certain one then it would be worth paying someone to go with you to check the bike out at the owners location if they will not bring the bike into the shop.

Another question to ask the current owner is the status of the title. Is there a lean on the motorcycle or do they even have the title in hand. Even dirt bikes have titles in the state of Texas so if they do not have one just walk away.

Use common sense and visually go over your potential used bike several times looking for little telltale signs of abuse or neglect. If the bike is covered in scratches and cracks, missing fasteners and body panels are not fitting just right then chances are there are other problems beneath the surface.

You can pretty much forget about doing a test ride on someones used motorcycle. Because if you wreck it, they still own it  You can how ever ask them to ride it up and down the street in front of you to get an idea of how the machine rolls out and maybe give you a heads up if there is something mechanically wrong.

Check out the tires and see if they are cracked. Dry rotting indicates the bike is usually outside in the heat and rain and not covered. This is a great indicator of the care that the current owner has taken with the bike. Its not a deal breaker, but are you prepared to shell out a couple of hundred dollars for new motorcycle tires?

The last thing is to check with your insurance agent on the cost of covering your used motorcycle. Cruisers and standard bikes will cost less to cover than say a Yamaha YZF-R1 or a Suzuki Hayabusa. Your age and driving record of course will play a large part in what your monthly premium will run you.
