Where To See The Coolest, Newest Cars
You would be forgiven for thinking that it would be on Hollywood Boulevard or at some Earl's Court show in London. However, all the latest models can be seen by standing on any street corner in Bucharest, Romania of all places.
In the last 5 years it seems that boat loads of cash has come home to roost for a large number of Bucharestians. A recent boom in the cost of property, based largely on hype and clever tactics, has it appears resulted in the sale of many apartments, land, villas etc., at extraordinary prices. For instance last year the price of an average 1 bedroom apartment in a crumbling 1980's block was fetching over 100,000 Euros. Now during the recession prices have dropped considerably but many profited from this explosion. With the added benefit that few had mortgages on these properties i.e. they were owned outright. How was this you might say. Well in communist times, most families were provided with accommodation of one sort or another. After the revolution in 1989, many properties became available to buy to their owners for not much more than a couple of months salary. The wise, invested what little money they had and have now reaped the benefit.
What, however, to spend this new found wealth on. The latest car seems to have become the thing to own and there are now reported to be more Mercedes here than in Germany. On my simple terraced house street there are the very latest Mercedes, Bentleys, BMW's, Audi's, Jaguars, Hummers and even a Weissmann. Take a look at the pictures I took to the right here. The funny part is that most don't have a garage to park these in. If you look carefully you can see them just parked up on the street with two wheels up on the pavement.
You may have seen the recent Top Gear where they tried out their flash cars on the famous road in Romania, known here as the Transfagarasan, that goes straight up and over the Fagaras mountains. Clarkson and Co., arrived in the Romanian port of Constanta and were expecting to see horses and carts and old Dacias but instead saw rows of Ferraris, Porsches et al.
So to see all the latest cars just stand on any street corner in Bucharest, Romania and pretty much every other car is fresh out of the showroom, the very latest model, be it a Ford, Chrysler, Opel, Peugeot or the luxury models I mentioned before.
