Challegnes Of Implementing Technology In The Classroom

The challenge with technology being implemented in education is among families who have incomes less than $25,000 yearly they find owning a computer as a luxury and not a viable necessity. According to the U.S. Census database there is a notable percentage difference in families who have internet access and those who do not. The following table details the percentage different in ages and education.

When you break out these percentages according to ethnicity there are great challenges among the Black and Hispanic families. Giving into account implementing technology in education some students will only have access to a computer during school hours. Some learners may have grandparents who are technology savvy and have computers in their home, but according to the U.S. Census report these numbers are considerably lower. One student said it best technology must be incorporate within the curriculum. Some students will only have the opportunity to access a computer during school hours. This must be taken into consideration when teaching learners. In order for all learners to have a fair opportunity to complete any assignment where computers are needed educators must give time allowance during class time to work on an assignment where technology is involved.

In reflecting on the Special Needs learner this also brings attention to the “No Child Left Behind Act.” For example in Shelby County the state education officials have changed the testing standard format for special need children. According to the Tribune Business News, “Educations across the nation have discussed how inappropriate the traditional test format is for Special Education students.”(McClatchy, Tribune Business News Washington)

This coincided with the “No Child Left Behind Act” due to the law was created to see that every child received a quality education. The State of Texas at one point had made a decision to ignore the “No Child Left Behind Law” in being frustrated with its being passed, but without the appropriate funding to support it properly.(Teaching Today: An Introduction to Education, 8th ed. Video Viewpoints).

In synthesizing this discussion it brings me to the point of curriculum improvements A second language requirement for grade school children should be a requirement. Within the paper it is discussed how to improve the education of our children by improving the curriculum. Diversity in our society today is increasing, and at the forefront of political issues such as; immigration, undocumented students of immigrant adults, and whether a solution is in sight.

The educational foundation would lay the ground work for the child’s success to compete in the future job market. Being a bilingual individual is important today and has a greater demand in the workplace. Being able to speak Spanish or another language increases the probability of creating a demand for a student’s skills later in life.

With more and more ethic groups entering the country it is advantageous for a child to begin early in learning a second language. Being able to speak a second language gives a child more options, and better employment opportunities. The implementation of creating a curriculum with the integration of a second language would be cost-effective and the cost of doing so would be minimal. Including the subject of a second language as a requirement for elementary school learners is inevitable.

Educators must see this as an opportunity to give learners a head start in being successful. Legally there would be no negative effects on the school board. Instituting a curriculum with a second language would be a benefit for the child. The Hispanic population has grown by 20% within the past ten years in the United States.

Being able to have adequate skills will assist students as they compete in the marketplace for employment. Adding a language to the school curriculum can also increase a child’s self-esteem level, as well as their self-confidence. Being able to converse with other nationalities in their native language is an advantage for any child.


It gives them the advantage and ability to make new friends from other cultures. With using minimal cost to the school the improvement would only consist of materials needed to instruct the children such as new textbooks and/or computer programs which can be used as an added resource for learning.

A private school in Fayetteville offers an after-school program where children can learn a second language. Children at the age of seven are learning Chinese at a minimal coast of $40 a month.(Northwest Arkansas Business Journal) With the way we do business it is for the student’s advantage to be able to converse and do business with various cultures. Being able to compete in today’s economic tough times is of utmost importance. The job market is competitive. Children should be given the opportunity to learn a second language as early as possible.

For an example when I was in High School taking a language was a requirement for graduation. Generally a student would have Spanish or French during the first or second year of High School. With times being much tougher and more business moving to Japan, China and other countries in order to mass produce merchandise at a cheaper cost. According to the U.S. Census report by year 2050 the United States will have seen a growth in the Hispanic population by 102.6 million.
