About Domain Names and Sub Domain Names

WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME? HOW DO WE DEFINE A DOMAIN NAME?

Domain Name System (DNS) was invented assist us humans to connect to specific computers and web content.

Imagine that people are known by their phone numbers instead of their names. ‘Hey, number 027465219034! How is the weather today?’ I know for certain I will not be able to recall many of them!

Similarly, domain names were invented to fill that kind of need on the Internet. Computers connected to the Internet needed to be identified and they are assigned a unique series of numbers called an IP address (a typical number looks like this: 125.77.69.78). IP stands for “Internet Protocol”, and as you can see, they are not easy to remember!

When you type an IP address into the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) bar of your browser page you will be connected to the computer it represents. But IP addresses are not easy to remember. So to address this issue, the Domain Name System (DNS) was invented assist us humans to connect to specific computers and web content.

AN EXAMPLE OF A DOMAIN NAME

You may not realise it but you use a domain name to surf the web or send an e-mail message. For example, the URL ‘http://www.orchardsthree.com’ contains the domain name orchardsthree.com, as does the e-mail address ‘info@ orchardsthree.com’.

.com is the first level domain
orchardsthree is the second level domain

WHAT IS A SUB DOMAIN?

Sub domains are the third level domains that are simply used to organize information within a website. They are like folders under your root directory with a special URL to access.

For example,
http://www.orchardsthree.com is the regular URL with out a sub domain.
http://wordsexplained.orchardsthree.com is an URL with sub domain “wordsexplained”.

.com is the first level domain
orchardsthree is the second level domain
orchardsthree is the third level domain

With your own domain name, you can also share your disk space with your members, friends or family by creating a sub domain name for each of them. Give them access using their own usernames and passwords.

Email addresses can be set up for these separate sections or members, friends or family on your web site. support@wordsexplained.orchardsthree.com
