How To Make Extra Money From Home With Your Hobbies

There are many hobbies that can make a profit. What better way to earn some extra cash or to earn a living? I am living proof that my hobby can make me a living, yes, because I work full time from home writing! In this article I will suggest some hobbies that are great for turning a profit while you enjoy what you love to do. These are suggestions and guidelines so please don't invest your last dollar on these. You should only invest when you see that the potential is there. Before you start doing this you should make sure the market for whatever you are doing is there. Anyway, it's your hobby so enjoy yourself.

Here are some of my personal hobbies that I have used to make some cash.

  • Bottle art - I make vases, pencil holders and decorative bottles.
  • Skin care - I love skin care and I have sold skin care items along with offering advice. You can also offer facials.
  • Massage - I have been a masseuse before!
  • Aerobics - Offering classes on my verandah
  • Selling stuff I have collected that I no longer need
  • Jewellery making - haven't sold much because I love jewellery so end up wearing most of my pieces...lol

Make money from your hobbies

Jewelry making. Not only can you sell your pieces to your family, friends and neighbors; you can also sell then online on eBay, Amazon and Etsy.com.

Photography. There are a few places online that you can have your photographs sold but you can also do portraits of people you know and charge them a fee. Photographing weddings and birthdays are also a great way to make some cash.

Video making. You can charge people to capture their wedding and functions on video. You can also make videos and upload to YouTube and other places and have advertisers place ads on your videos. That's a great way to make money from your hobby.

Drawing. If you can sketch or draw you can do sketches of people and charge a fee. There are also places online that you can sell your drawings to. Drawing cartoons and action heroes are also a great way to monetize your hobby. Very good sketches and drawings can be framed and sold as art.

Painting. Art sells, maybe not as often as you would like but you can sell your pieces online through eBay and Amazon.com. You can also contact your local art gallery and ask them to feature your work (a commission or fee may be involved). Another good idea is to have a showing at your home and invite people from the neighborhood, friends of friends, friends of family and advertise in your local paper. You can provide refreshments and price each piece. Make it a party so that you don't have to get a permit. Invite someone famous if you can.

Pottery. Making little items like ash trays, cups, vases and figurines are a great way to monetize your hobby. You can have an auction or garage sale for your pottery items. Sell them online too.

Quilting. If you can quilt you might be in for big bucks. You can get people to let you make their bedding items or whatever else they need quilting. You can also make items and sell online or to friends and neighbors. Your local department store, haberdashery or general store might be willing to feature your item for a commission.

Crocheting. Socks, mitts, tops and items of clothing are very popular when crocheted. People love items like these so if you have a small collection you can have a showing at home or a garage sale. You can also get people to let you make their stuff. Online is another good way to get them sold

Bottle art. This is one of my favorite hobbies. I take nice shaped bottles and spray them with beautiful metallic paints and decorate them. Sometimes I put photos on them and I may place a ribbon around the neck, depending on the look I am going for. Jars work great for vases, my cosmetic pencils and brushes or as pens and pencil holders. I often give these as gifts but sometimes people will purchase them as gifts for family and friends.

Collecting. Do you have a lot of stuff that you have collected over the years and don't know what to do with them? Are you running out of storage space? Don't worry, these items can be sold on eBay! If you don't want to do the online thing just have a yard or garage sale.

Cosmetics: If you love to wear makeup and can put it on well you can try being a makeup artist part time. You can also promote your favorite cosmetic brand right there in your home. Invite some of your neighbors and friends over and demonstrate how to use the products. Trust me, women cannot resist looking great! I loved cosmetics so much that I found I was promoting the Avon brand and taking orders for people even before I started selling Avon. What better way to look great and earn?

Cooking and baking: Love to cook, no problem. Cook lunches for the workers in your area. If there is a construction site or an office, make sandwiches and sell. If there is a school nearby make some cookies, cupcakes or muffins. Trust me, you wont have enough hands to sell these and you will make a tidy sum that could help with your bills. You could also cater out. If you have a car or station wagon you could post an ad in your local paper as a caterer for small parties and functions. Start with small dinner parties that you and your family members can manage. If you live alone then the smaller the better. You will make the meal at home and deliver or you can prepare gourmet meals in the client's kitchen.

Pet sitting: This is a hobby for an animal lover. People going on vacation could leave their pets with you until they return. A fee and benefits might be in order.

Pet grooming: You could combine the pet sitting with the pet grooming. You can offer shampooing, brushing, clipping of the nails and so on.

Dog walking: If you often walk your dog, at least everyday, you could also offer to walk your neighbors dog for a small fee. You can advertise in your local paper, especially if you are unemployed and have a lot of time on your hands. You must love dogs!

Writing: I am living proof that this works. I now work full time from home and right now I am at my computer putting this hub together! You can join Hubpages or some other content site. Elance.com is also a great place to start. When I submitted my first article in our local newspaper I was a teen and thought that it was a free publication. Imagine my surprise when I got a check in the mail, literally! If you have burning issues that you need told or some journalistic article, submit it to your local paper, you might be surprised too!

Poetry: There are places that purchase poetry. You can browse around on the net but here is a link, Ralans Webstravaganza. You can also submit poetry to magazines and your local paper (if they have a section for that). Greeting card companies also purchase poetry for their cards too. Another popular way to make money from your poetry is to print them on card paper with some nice graphic background and frame them!

Short stories: Many print and online magazines buy short stories. The link I gave for the poetry will also give information on where to get your short stories published. Times have also changed and you don't have to worry about being rejected by publishers anymore, you can now publish your own work though Barnes&Noble or Create Space (Amazon.com). There are other online publishing platforms that allow you to publish both in print and digitally. These platforms only charge when printing on demand.

Puppet making: I don't know much about puppet making but I do know that children and some adults love puppets. I also know that puppet shows are still quite popular. Some people also collect puppets as souvenirs so use up that great imagination and make some puppets to go.

Reading: If you love to read more than likely you love to write. Somehow the two always come hand in hand. So I was thinking that maybe you could write reviews of the books you read and post in the local newspaper. Critiques are also very popular too. A place like Hubpages is also a great place to write and publish your reviews. Start a book club for adults and children. If you are good at the English language give some reading lessons too!

Gardening: Do your neighbors covet your beautiful; garden? Let them pay you a fee to have theirs done as beautifully as yours and that will stop them from having their cat or dog make a mess of your beautiful roses. You could also sell seedlings and cutlets. Use up that old shed at the back of the house as a mini nursery.

Exercising and sports: if you like to exercise and you know it well, charge a fee to have people join you while you do your daily workouts. You could show them what to do. If you have a home gym that would be a bonus because they could pay $5 per week for a the privacy and use of your home and equipment. Now if you are a sports nut and you are adept at a particular sport, giving lessons is a great idea. Think about it, I know it makes sense.

Palm reading: People can't resist that sort of thing. They always want to know what the future has in store or what their fortune says. This is a great way to earn some cash and I can assure you that you will be surprised at how much extra cash you can actually make from this.

Music and Singing: Do you play an instrument, give music lessons to both adults and children! Start a band or if you can also sing, make a CD with copies and send to some producers, maybe they will be willing to produce. You can also place an ad in the paper or hand out some business cards about your talent. You could get jobs singing/playing at weddings or other functions. Some hotels have cabaret singers and instrumentalists so that is another option. If all else fails you can become a troubadour (singer on the corner), trust me, it works.

Dancing: You can give dancing lessons to both adults and children and if you are not shy your could market yourself to dance at concerts and functions. Another great place to earn some cash are talent shows.

Tattooing: There is a lot of money to be made tattooing especially if you have great designs. Most tattoo artists are also great at drawing and designing their own tattoos so that's a great way to earn some extra income with your hobby.

Candle making: If you make candles for home use you can also make candles to sell to your neighbors and friends. You can commission your local store to sell them. Gift stores and spas are also great places to check out for the candles.

Soap making: The same thing goes as with the candle making. If you can make your own soap you can sell them for a profit. Spas and gift shops are great places to have them sold.

Dream interpretation: People are really into this sort of thing. If you can interpret dreams and people can know what's going to happen next you can turn a profit. You can do this right from the comfort of your own home or at fairs and community B-BQs.

Astrology and Fortune telling: Can you tell what my fortune is? This is great for fairs and gatherings. You can also do this from home by taking appointments.

Doll making: Dolls have been around for thousands of years and so long as boys are girls are around they will forever be. Dolls are evergreen and even adults collect them as souvenirs too. If you can make dolls you can make money.

Song writing: This is another evergreen hobby because not all singers can write their own songs and many of them are always looking for songwriters.

One of my hobbies is stained glass. I've thought about trying to make some extra cash selling pieces except that I usually make something that I really want for myself or I make it as a gift.

You've offered so many great ideas on how to make money from hobbies.

Hi Susan, I have seen people do stained glass but never tried it. That's the trouble with making stuff, you always end up loving them...lol

I hope you give it a go and try making some extra cash. There are so many more hobbies I could add but the hubs was too long.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Reading, photography and gardening are some of my hobbies. I always love to review a book after reading it. In fact I have published many book reviews. I have not found any luck in making money from photography. And of course I do make money from gardening.

Hi Vinaya, I think stock photography is very hard to break into. You would make more money doing photography jobs or portraits. I think it's great that you are making some cash from the other hobbies. Thanks for the testimonial that this does work.

Wow! This is quite a list Cardisa. I like to design clothes and I was asked to design a few pieces for a fashion show lately. Its really exciting when you can earn from your hobby.

That is so great Loi, I hope you get famous and I get to see you on tv! Make use of your hobby because fashion and clothing are always in demand.

Right on, Cardisa! Great hub. Yep. I turned photography and video making into money makers! Great stuff here! Let me know when you want to open that restaurant!

I started painting in the 80's and to my utter astonishment, people wanted to buy some of them! Maybe I should take it back up.

Hey Dexter, great. I know you are a great photographer, I have seen a glimpse of your work. I opened a take out once but I didn't like that sort of thing. The restaurant of my dreams will be more personable as I cook to please each customer where they will sit and savour each meal customized for the individual pallet.

Hi my handsome cowboy! Painting is always in demand and some people love to buy from people they know. I would prefer to buy from someone from my community than a famous painting online. You never know when you art will be worth some good money.

What a list! This is very ambitious but I believe there is something here for everyone. The trick is not to take on too many ventures :) Nicely done and rated up.

Cardisa profile image

Cardisa 4 years ago from Jamaica Author

Hi Green Lotus, you are right. I would say start with one and do a little research first to make sure there is the market. I think there is something for everyone. Thanks for stopping by.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

It would be great it I could make money with things that feed my soul. That would be ideal. However, there is not always the market, like Green lotus said.

Cardisa 4 years ago from Jamaica Author

Hi Flora, that would be great because it would truly make you happy. Sometimes our favourites don't always work out but there is still hope that a secondary hobby might do the trick.

Man, I would be a millionaire if I could sell the art of procrastination!! Do you have one of those friends that has the ability to do just about anything, and has like 30 projects unfinished? Guilty. So many awesome ideas Cardisa! I have a box of bamboo sticks that are calling my name to create!

Cardisa profile image

Cardisa 4 years ago from Jamaica Author

Jen, I'll let you in a little secret, but please don't tell anyone because it could ruin my reputation. (Whisper) I don't have a friend like that because I AM THAT PERSON! We both would be millionaires selling the art of procrastination...lol

A part of my problem is that something always seem to crop up whenever I am in the middle of something I really love to do.

The bamboo sticks sound so fascinating.....go create...don't procrastinate! Wow that rhymed...lol

Very useful hub! The main thing I want to do is write! I'm thinking about trying to start some proofreading services locally, too, to see if I can get that going. I don't know about the "crafty" things. I can make hot pads with bottle caps! Maybe I'll try those on Etsy. :-) Great hub. Many votes!

Cardisa profile image

Cardisa 4 years ago from Jamaica Author

Hey Victoria, that hot pad idea is great and it is a craft! You could spray paint them different colours too. I like the idea. Writing is my main thing too but I love jewellery and other craft. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the votes.

Hello Nohaa, teaching belly dancing is a great way to help someone get fit and tone and for you to make some money in the process. That's a great idea. Good luck!

This is a great hub. I am so used to reading ways to make money by conventional methods. Your hub tells ways that "real people" can make money with their natural talents. Very nice hub.

Cardisa profile image

Cardisa 3 years ago from Jamaica Author

Hi Doodlehead, your username makes me giggle. Many people search fro ways to make money and think they need to learn new techniques when they already have the skills. All they need to realize what they already have and put it to good use.

Some good ideas here. These days when people want to make money, the first thing they think of is blogging - when in fact, it's extrmely difficult to make a living by blogging these days.

To make a decent income today, you really need to be selling something - whether it's your writing via sites like Elance, or ebooks, or something you've made, or a special skill you have. Blogging can still play a part, but they serve to promote whatever it is you're selling, they're rarely big money-makers in themselves.

Cardisa profile image

Cardisa 3 years ago from Jamaica Author

Thanks Marisa. You are so right because even though I work full time online, we still have a small home business to help supplement our income. My blog makes money through selling cookbooks and jerk spice. Adsense is far and few in between.

Marisa Wright profile image

Marisa Wright 3 years ago from Sydney

Good news on the cookbooks and spice. I really need to think of my own products to sell on my blogs but it's hard to think up relevant ideas.

Great hub Cardisa! I enjoyed reading this and have some ideas now for starting a business of some sort, on the side. Whilst HubPages earnings are doing well for me, writing here is more of a hobby than anything else, I would love to earn some extra income through selling a product. I like soapmaking so I was thinking of starting a soap business on Etsy...just a thought.

Well done on this, it has a very extensive and useful list! Shared and voted up +++ and interesting.

Great hub, with lot of great suggestions. I love writing, photography and gardening so why not? Going back to school next autumn, then some extra cash can be needed...

Cardisa profile image

Hi Susi10, why not make some money with soap. People prefer hand made soap to the gunk made in factories so you are guaranteed to make money. So long as your packaging is pretty your soap will sell.

Good luck!
