How Did You Hear About HubPages?

What prompted me to write this article was the question how did you hear about HubPages. It seems like a simple enough question and I was just wandering what others might have to say about it. I know I found it through a random series of events that eventually landed me here. It all began with a simple Google search of "how to make money online". I was honestly just messing around; I didn't actually expect to find any real answer to my question. It was some time ago and I'm not sure exactly how I eventually weeded through all of the results to actually land here on HubPages, but I know I found it; seemingly through a chance encounter that could have turned out a thousand different ways. However it came to be, I wound up here and decided to sing up and create an account.

Not another Money Making Scam

I thought it would be like so many other so called money making scams that wouldn't lead to anything more than an Email box full of spam with empty promises that would never be fulfilled. With that frame of mind I really didn't even give it a chance at first, not to mention that I was really too busy to devote any real time to it. So my account sat there doing nothing for over a year, and I had all but forgotten about even creating it. The days passed by like a fighter jet passing over head just about to break the sound barrier, and my account was at a complete stand still. How could it do any thing else, I hadn’t even read my first article, let alone publishing anything. I hadn’t asked any question or answered any, I had not yet participated in any forums, and quite frankly no one knew I was even here. So my account sat there doing exactly what I was doing with it; nothing. I hadn’t even given it a second thought, and it was quite obvious that without my participation it was never going to bring me any income or satisfaction what so ever. I’m not saying that there aren’t lots of scams out there, but nothing comes without a little work and dedication. If you want to make money online it takes a lot more than just creating the account and forgetting about it. You don’t get a job and just start collecting paychecks because you were hired, you have to work. The paychecks don’t just keep coming in because you worked a few days either, you have to keep on working.

Making Money with HubPages

Making money online with HubPages is a bit different than a job. It takes some real time and dedication and the paychecks don’t just start rolling in; it takes some time. The beauty is; once you get a nice following and have articles that lots of people are reading you can sit back and relax a little. You can’t just forget about it all together, but you can take a day off here and there and not worry so much about it. I might point out that I am not speaking from experience, because I haven’t really started making any measurable amounts of money. I’m stating that nothing is free and easy, at least not in my experience. Honestly I’m about a million miles from where I was originally headed with this Hub, but I figured I’d throw out some ideas and information about making money online since that was a part of the title. There are hundreds of Hubs floating around written by much more knowledgeable people on this subject than myself; if you feel the need you might check some of them out.

Back to My Original Point

My original point was that I had found HubPages and with no Great Expectations (not to be confused with the Charles Dickens novel) and had all but forgotten about it. One day in the distant future I was doing some research, while attempting to promote one of my websites, I stumbled upon an article here on the Hub with some great information about SEO techniques. After reading it I decided to create an account, only to realize that I already had one registered with my email. I was a bit surprised as I had completely forgotten about creating it. I had to go through the password retrieval process and eventually logged in and at last discovered the joy that is HubPages. I have since enjoyed reading many articles and learned much about various subjects and the people who so generously shared their knowledge. I have asked and answered questions, and even participated in a few of the forums. I have also written a few articles of my own, while they haven’t been hugely successful; they have been read and hopefully enjoyed by quite a few individuals. Which by the way leads me to my final point or rather question; how did you hear about HubPages? Please leave a comment and let the rest of us know what brought you here. The overall reason I decided to write this Hub was to ask that very question. I am just curious and being an average red blooded American I assume that many others might like to know as well. I was always taught that you shouldn’t assume because it makes an (ASS of U n ME) but in this case I have decided to take the chance.

What keeps you coming back to HubPages?

I signed up with Hub Pages at the encouragement from a dear friend who was already gaining fulfillment from writing on Hub Pages. She & I had talked briefly concerning our love of writing & sharing our life stories with people. She told me how people interacted through comments, forums & questions and it made me curious. So, I decided I would just try it.

I'm very new here & realize that there's a wide range of talent, knowledge and creativity to be discovered. I have thought of writing a book many times in my life, but it seemed such an overwhelming task that I never pursued it. Hub Pages is a great venue to practice & learn, so maybe, just maybe, writing a book could be a possibility.

Thank you dmop for this hub! I voted up, useful & interesting. God bless you!!!

dmop...good hub, voted up, interesting, and useful. I went with "writing," but reading, the people, and the questions would make a 4-way tie for me. Originally, a friend told me about HubPages, I thought about the money, but landed on no-dough, just change the world with my Hubs, as one Follower wrote about me and 9 others. ;) Enjoy your day.

I'll share this with hopes you'll get more answers!

I started with HubPages looking to make money by writing - which is something I love to do, but don't really take time for in life outside of school. Best of luck!

Love this - I started on hubpages because I saw the potential to improve my article writing, read what other writers are writing about and to "meet" likewise creative souls. Ain't made any money but I always say, writing is my love and pleasure, the money, not relevant, but a bonus.

dmop, Thanks for this article. I found Hubpages through Monster.com. When I visited the site I signed up not looking to make tons of money but because I saw the opportunity to explore writing. So far I am having a blast but am still a nubie.

FishingGuide, Through monster, wow that is pretty cool. Ya the money making opportunity seems small, but I suppose it does exist. The writing and learning is well worth it though. Thanks for taking a moment to read and comment, have a great day.

Dolphan5, I would tell your brother thanks if I were you. Not that I'm telling you what to do, just a suggestion. When I was young they called me baby Davie cause I was the baby of the family, a few days into kindergarten I put a stop to that. Thanks for reading and commenting, have a fantastic day.

Great hub dmop. To be completely honest, I was curious to see if hubpages was a viable option to promote and gain backlinks to my other sites. I already love what I write about, but I found the hubpages community a lot of great fun.

For me, it's the best of both worlds.

Voted up and interesting and shared!

An honest hub, I like it. I had a similar experience. Originally I found adsense and then Hubpages was recommended to me. I started, but quickly got sidetracked and left the account for 6 months. However, I found I had some free time and decided to give it another go. It takes time to earn, but it IS POSSIBLE with dedication.

Shared, up and useful

Just like moonlake, I discovered HubPages by accident. I was looking something interesting to read in the internet as I did not want to buy something to read. Then an article catched my eyes. I can´t remember which one that was. That whole day, I read a lot from HP and found out that I could be a member, too. That next day I signed up as writing was always my hobby and thought that it was the chance for me to know if I really can write. I started on it because I love to write.

This is a very good hub. Thanks for sharing.

I was looking for an online format to organize research and links on topics to share with family and friends instead of bombarding them with emails! Writing on HubPages has been proven to help me organize my thoughts and get my point across to others.

dmop, like you I signed up and forgot all about hubpages. Then about 6 months later I landed on this site again, I don't remember how. I was responding to a question and when the choice to make it into an hub was offered, I on the spur of the moment, took it.

This is how my first hub was born. I should be thankful to the hubber who inspired me to write a hub in answer to his question. Till my first hub I had not read any hub or had any idea how to go about publishing a hub.

Since then, I have read very many, useful and excellent hubs, made some beautiful friendships and have had great interaction with many great hubbers.

I'm glad I joined hubpages. The community here is great.

I'm glad to read this hub too.

Voted up and interesting.

I have no idea how I first found HubPages - I've been aware of it for years, and then a few weeks ago I thought I'd give it a try. Love the Hub, and the photos are awesome. moiz17, HubPages is a great place for writers to gain some exposure. I think the capsules really give us a lot of options that help make our writing more engaging as well. I have had very little time to devote to it lately, but I love being here and hope to continue for a long time.

dmop: I discovered HubPages via Monster.com, where they advertise extensively -- and make the process sound like an actual "job." Once I read enough to be convinced that HubPages wasn't an outright scam, I joined. I fouled something up when establishing my account, so I haven't earned one red cent by contributing my Hubs, but I don't really care. For me, the writing is just a way to kill time and to do some venting. I enjoy reading what "ordinary" people have to say, which they think will be of general interest. The atmosphere is positive. Readers do not rant or trash your material. As for the company running HubPages, I have nothing glowing to say. The fact that they don't have a home page or a basic "let's get started" tutorial is really off-putting. Since they are an organization geared toward generating income for themselves, you'd think they'd at least have a fairly expansive customer service department, but no. They have NOTHING. They expect the forums and individual postings to give new members everything they need, and this doesn't strike me as being particularly professional or competent. One basically never "hears" from the heads at HubPages unless they think your post is too similar to "something else" -- they never specify who/what/when/where. They simply choose not to publish your piece, which you can either re-write or just toss. Also, I'm not sure if I like or dislike the fact that HubPages has NO CRITERIA, NO PREREQUISTIES for writing on their site. We have all encountered the poor soul who cannot link three words together without becoming incoherent. In some ways HubPages is like a bird sanctuary. Any lost pigeon can join the varied flock. With this open-door policy ... anything goes. (And it does.) I tend to gravitate more toward the writers like myself who are not in the "biz" to generate an income but wish to express an opinion or share an experience in a cogent fashion. The people who are trying to earn cash (some of them) can become frenetic, writing several Hubs a day regarding subjects that you KNOW they are racking their brains to construct. There is nothing inherently wrong about this within the HubWorld domain, but it sometimes make me feel a bit sorry to see some individuals twisting themselves inside out in order to get as many pieces published as possible.

whowas 4 years ago

Nice hub that and very interesting poll results so far. I came to hubpages semi-accidentally via a google search for something else.

Thing is, I signed up and wrote my first hub straight off - and it is still my most popular hub to date so I guess that was beginner's luck! But I just fell in love with it immediately.

I never thought to make money here - although that has now become part of my objective - but quite by accident, I have actually accrued a few dollars this month.

They say if you keep at it for five years, you'll have at least a valuable contribution to you income. Personally, I just find the community and the format very encouraging. I write other places and publish off line too but I find hubbing a great way to keep writing. And having the freedom to write anything that interests me is a great relief from the dog-work of writing market-led commissions that are not necessarily my passion but pay the bills.

I think that it is a great question to have asked. Thanks.

rjbatty, I do get where you're coming from with a lot of your comment, but part of what you define as a problem is what I like about HubPages. I like that they let anyone write, and only remove material that doesn't meet a certain standard, or is offensive in nature. I haven't had anything removed so far, so I don't know how they handle it, but I agree that there should be a list of reasons given if something is removed. I thank you for stopping by and for the comment. I hope you have a great day.

whowas, I found the Hub in much the same way and I do see a potential to make some money here, but I just like writing and the community. Thanks for stopping in and have a great day.
