How do I Start a Small Business

The Dream

Today I did something truly terrifying and took the very first step toward my dream. Why is this terrifying? I have almost no idea what I am doing. My only assets are my determination (some might say stubbornness) and my utter confidence that I can learn.

At this point, you may be asking what my dream is. If you are, I know you have not yet read my profile. My dream is to open up a video game store.

To quote myself: "I believe anything is possible with enough will to make it happen".

Right now, I can clearly see where I'm at and where I want to be. It's the long and dark road to get there that I need help with. I checked out the website of the local Chamber of Commerce to get the address and find out a bit more information before I drove down there. I was pleased to discover a separate Small Business center just for women.

Some of the services the Women's Business Center of North Alabama (WBCNA) provides are:

  • Start-up Assistance
  • Business Coaching and Training
  • Access to Financing
  • Networking Opportunities with a Ready-made Network of Contacts

I thought briefly of simply calling the number listed to find assistance but decided that I must see for myself.

Doubts and Fears

While I drove down there I knew that these few minutes would be the last opportunity I would allow myself to consider turning back. With that thought, all my doubts rolled in.

I have no idea what I'm doing. I only have a high school education, no business degree. Why do I think I can do this? I may have 10 years of management experience but I've always had a boss to lean on. I have only helped run a business while other people make the true decisions. Maybe I should stay where I'm at, get promoted. I have a decent, steady paycheck now that could only get better. This would be the safer, easier choice.

I almost turn back.

Final Decision

I asked myself a very important question and my decision came with the answer.

So far the only progress made toward my dream is an appointment with a Business Coach on August 30th. She will help me every step of the way from constructing a successful business plan to choosing a location.

This is my declaration of my goal and also serves as an introduction to more hubs on my progress in the hopes that it might help anyone else that wants to start a small business but have no idea where to start.

Ask yourself this question:

Do I trust in my will and ability to succeed, or not?

"Do I trust in my will and ability to succeed, or not?"

This doubting attitude has to change!

I was in your boat 33 years ago -- good, safe government job for 8 years but not happy working for someone else.

Determination, Confidence about what you are doing and able to Change Gears when problems arise are so important.

You won't be doing this for 30 years. You'll make career changes along the way as things change over time but, never have any doubts about your abilities. You don't require College, University or degrees to be self employed --- just the guts to get out and do it.

You will eventually hire people to assist you and then ---- you're the Boss! That's all it is --- be Street Smart and Go for it.

I won't wish you Good Luck. That's just saying - I hope you make it --- meaning Doubt -- Not Good.

I'll simply say --- Enjoy the Journey with its many twists and turns.

The years will fly by with no regrets --- and -- No one will be telling you what to do and when to do it.

Entrepreneurs make the economy better. If it wasn't for small business people like you, nobody would have a job.

@ Hunbbel Meer, thanks and I know I won't stop.

@ Daniel Carter, thanks too. I'm not sure how smart or courageous I really am, but suspect I will soon find out :) The business coach gives me a HUGE advantage though.

@ ianleverette47, thanks also for the encouragement and wonderful advice. You may have misunderstood me, I'm no longer doubting myself. I was trying to express all the thoughts I've had that has made me hesitate in the past, until I asked myself that question. I was also suggesting anyone who is scared to start working on their dream to ask themselves the same.

"Do I trust in my will and ability to succeed, or not?" Because if a person does not trust their own abilities, they will not succeed.

Thanks to everyone who has read this so far. I promise there will be more hubs detailing my experience on starting a small business. I hope hope everyone will continue to read and support me. Any comments at all will be welcome.

I agree with ianleverette, small businesses make the economy better. Every giant business started out with one person saying "I can do this!"

Awesome imatellmuva. I know exactly what you mean, if I had never joined hubpages I might never have realized what I really wanted to do and never acted on it. Everyone on hubpages who has supported and coached my writing is an inspiration to me.
