How to Get a Freelance Writing Job the Shortest Time Possible

Updated on July 2, 2012

Freelance writing is becoming a great alternative to earn online, especially during these times where the global financial crunch is still widely felt. But there are some factors you need to consider while you embark on an endeavor to enter this field of discipline to reap success. Websites such as Elance, Freelancer and oDesk are some of the most popular sites to extract earnings. Although these wonderful websites offers great opportunities to give you writing tasks, things can be very difficult at first, for it is jungle out there and you need to overcome hurdles and obstacles in order for you to withstand the elements such as stiff competition and still at the stage of starting to build a reputation. But there is a shortcut or way to level the playing field. If you have limited time and you wish to get writing tasks right away you might tap the ideas provided in this article but beware of the people that might just use you and reward you with nothing in the end.

Feel free to read these wonderful articles:

Apply directly

Getting writing tasks can be very difficult at first especially in established websites that offer writing tasks for you to work on. You need to strengthen your credibility, gain more exposure and experience and garner network of clients and friends as many as you can in order for you to make your presence felt and be a force to reckon with. However, if you have no time or little time to make a name for yourself, your progress as a freelance writer will be in a stale state. Try applying directly to the job providers in the different sites that offers freelance writing tasks; tell them that you are willing to produce articles for them and be paid per article. Decide the rate you are comfortable with. It is you should decide what rate you desire since it is you who will do the hard work. But bear in mind that you must offer them fair and reasonable rate, otherwise you might disappoint future job providers and you will end up without projects. Send them email that contains a cover letter, resume and portfolio. Be meticulous and cautious while applying since we are in a virtual world, a place where things can really be superficial or fake. Yes there are some clients that are hoax and give you empty promises and big fat zero earnings. Settle for the clients that have established websites (which they really own, it is okay to let them show evidence that they own a respectable website, by letting them write anything on their website as you wish, if you are beginner upfront payment will work for you the best) if not let them give you upfront payment of at least 50 percent. Be sure that you have a PayPal account so that you can settle your financial matters using this medium. There are clients or job providers that will escape their financial obligations at anytime, so you need to be cautious at all times while dealing online. The chance of getting fooled here is great so you need to be extra careful, nonetheless, if you are in good hands things will be okay. I am a risk taker and I did this formula and luckily I wound up writing now for a respectable website doing some sports articles which is my forte. I am already done with their training assignments and still awaiting the result of my performance during the training, whether I meet their grades or not

Here are the things you need to know more while applying for writing tasks online:

When applying as a freelance writer you need the following.

Cover Letter

When writing your cover letter you need to be solid and convincing in presenting a compelling and thought-provoking contents about your write-ups, a brief description of your writing experience and your qualifications. This is your sort of application letter. Here is a suggested link to guide you write a cover letter well: Getting The Job

Resume

Use your resume to impress future boss or writing tasks providers. A very good resume should include your educational background, awards received and work experience (especially those related to journalism), your skills, interests, references and certificates. Your goal here is to get an interview from potential job provider to enable them to discern if you are qualified or not. Here is a link that you might find useful while you apply online: Resume Samples

Portfolio

This contain the write-ups you whipped out from various websites such as HubPages, Squidoo, Info Barrel and the likes. You may also use your blogs in your websites as part of your portfolio. Basic portfolio may contain the urls and a description of your hubs, blogs or articles. Choose the best hubs, blogs or articles that you have. A formidable portfolio may contain writing projects you’ve done in various websites I mentioned earlier (Elance, Freelancer, oDesk, etc). In case you don’t know it HubPages have great writers on her fold because they can use their write-ups they made here as part of their portfolio in carving out future writings tasks aside from earning well through Adsense.

During the interview:

If you are called for an interview be confident with your skills (but don’t be over confident), show your strengths and avoid faulty grammars as much as possible. Before you start saying anything thank the interviewee for finding time to interview you. Be smart in answering all questions thrown at you. If they ask about your weaknesses, they are setting up a trap. Gallantly escape the snare by making any weaknesses into strengths. For instance saying being aggressive (which can be a negative attribute), then afterward, say you are using this to get as many clients as you can to get more writing assignments. With sheer might say you can get the job done on time. Sell yourself well and don't get nervous. Stay cool, if you did your best but didn't carved out good results for there are still some future opportunities waiting for you. Keep improving as a writer and never get disappointed.

While doing the writing tasks:

Write for them to the best of your abilities remember that they gave you the chance to prove your mettle and don’t allow yourself that your efforts will all go to waste. Researching skills plays a key role in doing your assigned tasks, so you need to be patient, resourceful and resilient. Meet the deadline they set or else you’ll be a goner real soon. If you cannot get the job done on time, tell them so without hesitation. It is better not to assume responsibility that you cannot finish than assume responsibility that will not yet yield anything.

I hope this will help in a way. God Bless it!
