How to Pass the Exam for Mammography Certification

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has a mammography certification program. In addition to education and clinical experience, applicants must pass a mammography certification exam to get certified.

ARRT mammography certification is a post-primary pathway to professional credentials. What this means is that an individual must first become certified for ARRT for radiography. Certified radiography clinicians may then apply for the specialty mammography certification program.

This article does not fully discuss how to get certified for radiography, but it is a very similar process to this mammography program and includes education, experience, and a radiography certification exam. Refer to the ARRT radiography page for more details.

For mammography, the applicant must complete very specific clinical tasks in the field of mammography before qualifying for the mammography certification exam. Candidates should download the tasks as quickly as possible and have their employer keep a record of such work to document the work for the ARRT certification application procedure.

As of 2011, there are no mammography education requirements for ARRT certification outside the clinical experience. However, it would obviously be wise to take any college or technical-school classes or continuing-education classes specific to mammography to prepare for the exam. In fact, those who do get certified as mammography technicians will have to accumulate 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

All candidates should access the mammography exam content specifications well before test time. This will help in figuring out what to study for the test. Unfortunately, ARRT does not give specific exam references for mammography or other radiology-related certification tests. Thus, it may be wise to take a specific mammography training course that prepares students for the ARRT exam. Use the resources and books from such a course along with the content outline to get ready for the test.

According to ARRT, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists may have resources available for studying mammography. View the website link in the Resources below.
