How to promote your books

Most authors admit that writing a book is easy while promoting their book as an independent author is a completely different ball game. In fact, the reality is that making money from your books is a hard nut to crack because there is so much to do. You are not only the author but also your own marketer and promoter. Basically, you will have to do all it takes to get the word out about your book or your books will not sell – simple as that.

So let’s take a look at some of the ways on how to promote your books:

Be active on social media

If you are not on social media, you don’t exist. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ and a host of others are so important for marketing that it just cannot be ignored. First things first, create social profiles on all of the sites mentioned above and start tweeting, posting, linking, pinning and sharing. All of these social media sites are of equal importance and you have to be using it on a daily basis to promote your books. Google+ is making huge waves these days and rightly so, some of the links that you post will also appear on its search engines. Lots of people are buying what they see on Pinterest so if are not using it, and then you are missing out a huge audience. Google Plus has loads of communities where you can make friends and promote your books. Link your books in the “publications” section on your LinkedIn profile. People landing on your profile will see your publications. Don’t ignore the power of social media for book promotion.

Start blogging

Its lot easier than done, but as an author you have to have a blog of your own. You need to pen your thoughts on your website, start conversations, capture emails and potential buyers or simply promote yourself. There are a host of free blogging services from WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, TypePad, Weebly and so on. You just need to find a blogging system that you are comfortable with. Once you have created a website, create an about page where you can list your books.

Let listed

There are a number of book sites such as BookMuni that will interview you and link to your books. This will get some exposure to you as an author and to your books.

Get interviewed

Ask bloggers in your subject are if they would like to interview. Most bloggers are more than happy to do interviews. In this way, you can have yourself exposed to potential buyers. It’s amazing what can be done if you just ask.

Be active on forums

You must join book forums or forums in your niche where you can interact with others. Most forums allow you to add your link in the signature. Here you can simply add your book links and that’s all to it. You aren't actively promoting yourself but when you do answer or reply to questions on the forum; your links are left behind. And if someone is interested in your books, they will buy it.

Good advice here on promoting your book. I have only written one (Kindle) book, mainly for the experience, and totally failed to market it properly. It didn't sell well but, when and if I decide to write another, I will definitely follow these pointers for promoting it.
