Modern Websites Silo Structure

How to Make Successful Modern Websites

When setting up modern websites, there are several important considerations in what type of website works best for you. Among the more important questions to address is how can you build a site that the search engines will love as much as your website visitors. To achieve that you need not only a crisp, uncluttered look, but also an organization of the pages that maximizes the likelihood you will get a large amount of traffic. If you build a website yourself, then having a program that can present a good image to the public is important.

Nowadays, the web page creation software, and web pages design tools are more and more coming to rely on a "silo structure" for the way the modern websites are organized. For a web creator who is trying to optimize his website for search engines like google, this way of organizing the web pages can make all the difference, and programs like XsitePro also help make the process simple and easy.

Why Does Silo Structure of Websites Matter?

When a search engine indexes your web pages, in order to decide how important they are, a key consideration is how deep the links are. Pages tend to "pass on" their importance to the pages they point to (link to) and if one page links to several different places in your site, it kind of "shares the wealth" of its clout across all those sites. However if that page connects to only one other page, that page inherits all the "authority" of the place that points to it. So if you have one page connected to another page that is only connected to another page, etc. pretty soon the pages down the line all get the accumulated authority.

What Exactly Is A Silo Structure?

A silo structure type of web site is one in which each web-page links vertically but not horizontally, within the overall site structure. So, for a simple example, let's say you want to build a website on monsters and organize your site to have 2 categories, werewolves and vampires. Under each category you might have subcategories books and movies, and under each of these your specific books or movies. Assume then that you wanted to have a discussion on one page of Twilight, a work of fiction that happens to have both werewolves and vampires, and is also available in both books and movies. Assume you now want to discuss the character Edward, who was a vampire in that series.

In traditional web pages, everything on that page would probably link to just about everything else. There might well be one file on the character Edward that links to the vampire movies, to the Twilight books and maybe even to his rival Jacob, who is the main werewolf. This kind of linking makes for a lot of links, and many things are interconnected.

In a modern website's silo structure, however, there would be a page for Edward from the movie, and it would link up to the Title of the Movie, Twilight, which would then be linked up to the category Movies about Vampires, which would in turn be linked up to the major category of Vampire type monsters. by contrast, when using a silo structure, Edward is linked just once and each page above him is linked once, at least that wold be how silo structure would be done in it's purest form. References to Edward from the the book would probably not be cross-linked to the Edward from the movie, since it is presented in a different silo - even though the file might read rather similarly. Of course you would need to use a program like copyscape to assure that the files from the silo architecture are not too similar.

The conservative linking approach used in the silo structure approach does not leak from one category (silo) to another. So Edward's page would be powerful, in attracting search engines, because it is the deepest and has the most downstream juice from the earlier pages. In the modern websites, clarity of structure means your reader - and the search engine- is more likely to end up where you send him.

You may be able to do this yourself. However it certainly can be beneficial to have a professional guide. Your main choices for that would be plugins, that are available for wordpress sites and are free, or website development software like Xsitepro. It can be easier and cleaner with webpage creation software like XsitePro that can do it automatically, and guide you to making your website better organized, more efficient, and more attractive to the search engines.

A silo structure is only one of the considerations you need to explore in developing a web page, but it is an important one. You also want your site to be clean and easy to navigate, and make sure that the visitors end up where you would like them.
