Starting An Internet Business

Updated on January 8, 2015

Why Start Your Own Internet Business?

People have a variety of reasons for wanting to start their own Internet Business and this is great, but it can also be extremely frustrating when things don't work as planned. Or in some cases when the "hype" wears off and reality isn't exactly as thought.

Hype Doesn't Pay

Internet marketers have been famous for hyping their products as the next greatest "get rich quick" program. Many of these guys and gals have faded away but you will still see a few ads pop-up here and there - save yourself the headache and ignore them.

Common Reasons to Start an Internet Business

There are millions of people looking for ways to make money and many of them are looking in the direction of the Internet.

There's good reason for this:

  • Work at Home
  • Low Start-Up Costs
  • No Overhead (rental,employees,insurance,etc..)
  • Flex Time
  • No Boss
  • Income Potential
  • Your Website is Open 24/7

There are definitely advantages to working at home and being your own boss, but there are also some negatives associated with this business, some are:

  • Frustration - you build a great site - no visitors
  • Discipline - you have nobody to report to, it's so easy to put off till tomorrow
  • Time - you can get lost both ways with this. You can either spend to little time and get nowhere or you can get consumed with the fascination of it all and never come up for air. Balance is the key.
  • Direction - there are so many ways to make money at home in the Internet business, one can go off track and never get anywhere.

It's always good to be flexible and look for better ways to do things. The problem here is it's to easy to change course. If you started a traditional business where you have lease agreements and inventory to buy, you made a commitment to a certain business plan.

The Basics

Knowing the basics of this business is very beneficial. For one reason, when it's time to to buy something to enhance your business you will prevent yourself from being taken advantage of.

Here are a few subjects you should become familiar with:

  • Domains
  • Web Hosting
  • Blogs
  • Auto Responders
  • Keywords
  • FTP

Like any new venture some words will be foreign to you, but they really are simple tasks once you get to know them.

If your motivation for starting a Internet business is a little more than a quick buck, then you will find these hurdles incentives to learn and not headaches.

Building A Home Based Business

Starting and building a home Internet business are two different things. Building is an ongoing process, whereas getting the right direction and instruction at the start will determine how quickly you can build your business.

Getting Started

You will have to learn what basic tools are needed and how to use them. You might be a stubborn contrarian like I am and spend many months trying to figure it out by yourself, or learn form others and do it right. If you are anxious to get started, finding good guidance is a big edge.

You will need the following:

  • Computer
  • High Speed Internet Connection
  • Quiet Workspace At Home
  • A Plan
  • Website
  • E-mail account

You noticed we didn't mention a domain or hosting company because in the beginning you can use blogger or other Free services to start. Later you can add on as you go.

Traffic

This is what every business owner needs, it doesn't matter if you are a store owner or you are starting a Internet business, traffic is required. You will run across terms like:

  • Article Marketing
  • SEO
  • Social Networking
  • Adwords
  • Ezine Ads
  • E-mail Marketing

The bottom line is - a crappy site with a lot of traffic will make more money than a great site with little to no traffic. So where should you allocate a good portion of your time? You guessed it...traffic.

Putting the Pieces Of the Puzzle Together

Building a home Internet business sounds complicated, but it is quite fascinating.

Repetition is the best teacher and after you go through each step a few times it really isn't that hard. The basics as we discussed are:

  • Discipline
  • Tools Needed
  • Your Plan (focus)
  • Traffic (marketing)

That's basically it. There are people making millions from the Internet, but it took time for them to build a strong business.

As mentioned, it is important when starting an Internet business to get good information and instruction.

You can actually do a little earning while learning too! Just don't get to caught up with the pie in the sky stuff.
