Modern Resumes After 1995

Since 1995, it has been my pleasure to teach effective Resume Preparation classes that have included effective Cover Letters, Thanks You Letters, and Portfolio Documents.

In addition, I have prepared hundreds of these documents for resume services as well as a growing number of individual clients.

A well prepared Resume provides a quick and enticing snapshot of the job seeker in just a few seconds, but an effective Cover Letter is often the key document that convinces the potential employer to call in that job candidate for an interview.

The following are two of my more recent cover letters that have gained immediate interviews for job seekers. Client and employer information has been changes in order to protect their privacy.

The following cover letter resulted in a request for interview within two days after it was received by Snailmail. The job candidate was hired within 30 days.

Note that the language of the first paragraph may seem a bit stiff and formal, but it is fitting for the employer, a Sorority in the university Greek System.

The second version is formatted for cut-and-paste into an online application form.

Re: House Director Position #12345

Dear Ms. Hydrox:

Please consider my enclosed resume in application to your advertised position of House Director for Delta Able Sorority at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. You will see that I have educational experience and professional background in areas that are well suited to this position. Human Development and K-12 Teacher’s training, along with extensive experience, provide substantial skills for dealing effectively with the operations of a campus sorority facility. They also prepared me to serve its diverse membership and to oversee its various routines that include dining requirements, counseling, conflict resolution, and special events.

From my experience in education, food and dining services supervision, and children’s life skills development, I can provide your Athens Chapter of Delta Able with positive results like those recognized by all of my former employers. They have all gained recognition, saved costs, and gained profits or funding from my direct contributions. I also offer the drive to excel and to create a smoothly running and welcoming facility for members and the university community. With these skills, I can help bring Ohio University to an increasingly higher status within the Greek System as well as among top American universities and colleges.

Specific to operating a sorority and residential facility, I have been successful in larger-scale school food and dining operations for a number of years. Skills such as sanitation, maintenance, ordering and inventories; hiring, training, and managing staff, and facilitating large groups all apply to operating a busy residential facility and help suit me to this interesting position.

Please contact me at either my phone: (740)123-4567 or Email: A_Barton@gmail.com so that we may set a date for a personal meeting to discuss my experience and potential contributions to Ohio University. Thank you, and I very much look forward to meeting you soon.

Sincerely Yours,

Alice D. Barton

The example below yielded an interview within a week of receipt and the job candidate was hired within 45 days in the university setting.

University and university related positions can require 30 to 90 days to result in a hire, because of state and federal procedural requirements set into place by related funding and governing boards.

The Student Union, University of Michigan

1444 N. Union Street

Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109

Dear Ms. Grentile:

With nearly a decade of documented success in planning and coordinating events; directing staff, students and volunteers; and breaking sales and fundraising records, I am very much interested in the position of Senior Event Planning Coordinator of the Michigan Student Union.

For five years, I have served as an effective House Director for Ipsi Delta Fraternity at The Worthingfield State University, with consistent recognition from my superiors and the Collegians that we serve. During this tenure, I have amassed detailed expert knowledge about the University, the Union, and high profile event planning in an internally recognized collegiate setting. I have also worked with the Salvation Army to coordinate national events that surpassed fundraising goals.

I also have received the following comment of recognition for my achievements:

Your implementation of our Rush Week Events yearly makes recruitment an ongoing unqualified success

-- Ipsi Delta Fraternity at The Worthingfield State University

Detail-oriented, organized, and an optimum communicator at all levels, I inject confidence and enthusiasm into my team building strategies that result in smooth event operations, positive customer feedback, and consistently growing numbers of customers. Overarching these skills is my consistent provision of unexcelled customer service. My employers will testify that I can handle multiple projects to outcomes greater than expected, both on time and under budget, all with exemplary customer satisfaction.

I intend to contribute to the future success of your organization in the follow ways:

  • Successfully plan, implement, coordinate, and monitor event timelines, agendas, schedules, and materials, and AV materials and presentations on time and within budget.
  • Establish and maintain superior levels of communication with speakers, participants, staff, students, volunteers, vendors, and administrations of the University and its departments.
  • Analyze feedback from evaluations, debrief staff, build teamwork, and make improvements.

I am eager to join your events team and welcome the opportunity for you to review my credentials in a personal interview. Please contact me at either 614.123.4567 or Mduchen@nohoo.com in order to schedule a meeting.

Sincerely,

Mark Duchen

Patty this is really helpful. A cover letter makes a world of difference, and engaging who you're trying to impress is really really important. Great topic. This hub goes well with those other two hubs you wrote that you linked to towards the top there. I recommend people check those out too for sure.
