The Nurse and the Not Flushed Toilet

FLUSH THE TOILET!

Let me get started....yesterday I had quite a bust day at work...We had some very sick and needy patients. Everyone was busy and stressed but we kept our spirits up and supported each other as best we could. I should mention that I work with three very skilled, and intelligent nurses. I became frustrated right from the get go as I was left with extra bathing duties which I am expected to do without question. Believing this to be unfair I showed my butt and voiced my displeasure; a very selfish thing for me to do and immediatly regretted.

As the day progressed I managed to fulfil the menial tasks that I was left with. Quite satisfied with myself since I started the day having no idea how or if I could complete all my work that shift. I also managed to provide support and reassurance to a patient's family member who was facing decisions to be made regarding a dying family member. Having no emotional support system I found extra time to spend with that person (a rare feat).

As I was rushing around getting caught up at the end of the shift I noticed a sign above the commode in bold print FLUSH THE TOILET. Knowing who put the note up my rebellious and mischievous side took over and I deliberately DID NOT FLUSH THE TOILET. Later on my way out the door to the car I learned that the one who left the note absolutely did not see the humor in what I had left in the toilet and was very angry and upset. I therefore took it upon myself to call said person, and admit that I had done the deed on purpose. I was then called disgusting and inconsiderate without haste. I admit I was wrong to be so rebellious and maybe spiteful, but never did I attack her character or try to make her feel bad.  Believing her to have a sense of humor was sorely mistaken.

What lesson was to be learned in all that stink (pun intended) about not flushing the toilet?:

1) I sure thought about flushing the toilet a lot more.

2) I never want to be so self serving that I need to make a huge issue about something as meaningless as someone forgetting to flush the toilet.

3) "Don't sweat the small stuff."

4) "S--t happens!"

5) Not everyone thinks "potty humor" is funny.

Being a nurse is difficult. Being able to laugh at a difficult situation is challenging. You can't get fired for not flushing the toilet, but you can sure cause a stink!

Duchess, LOL she got over it but it took her a while. You know how some people just can't let things go. You have to laugh sometimes to keep from crying.

Thank you so much for reading! Tammy

LOl Well your human after all. One time I had been in hospital for close to a week. I was very ill and had been given liquids during that time. Also I had a CT/Scan, and you know what that stuff they give you does. Well the day before i was released I had to go to the toilet, I exploded. the nurse had already told me I was not allowed to flush it as she had to see it. I was so embarrassed and it was terrible. The stench was over powering. Why do they do that?

ralwus...LOL there are several reasons that we do that but we try not to leave it for too long...at least not me (I just left urine in the commode anyway) sometimes we have to take a sample...we have to see if you passed the contrast because sometimes it won't pass

Unfortunately when you have been a nurse for a long time you can't smell anymore or you learn not to notice because smells are just there all the time. You poor guy I hope the nurses were at least nice to you. We don't take it personally. But I do understand how embarrassed you were and I hope you don't have to go through that again.

Glad I made you laugh. Thanks for taking the time to read and make a comment I am always so happy to see you.

Well you can nurse me back to health anytime!

You have an excellent sense of humor and we share something in common (like that line in a Neil Young song - Helpless)

I am also from a small town/city in Ontario - Hamilton!
