The Q Word: Quiet

The Q Word

It has been quiet. Yes I said the Q word! I will put it out there and shout it to the universe. Hopefully it will stay that way. Ya that’s it. Stick a positive word in there instead of the negative and see what you get. Hope it works. For all you lay people out there, the word quiet is usually a bad thing to say out loud in the nursing world (at least the world that I work in). If things get hairy you get the blame because you said "quiet".

This Weeks Menu Discussion

We have been discussing menu’s for next week. You see we all work the weekend program in the facility that we work for. We just work the weekend so that we can be home during the week.

My coworkers all know how to cook. I could probably cook if I actually tried. I have never baked a cake that I didn’t scorch on the bottom. My husband always says if you smell smoke then dinner is ready. This weekend we brought goodies from home. No offense but the cafeteria here sucks. The food is terrible and expensive. Plus everthing tastes the same, and they give you teeny tiny portions.

My forte in the culinary world is knowing where to find goodies. If you want to know where to get the best rolls, just ask me. So I brought the store bought (ha, that sounds funny doesn’t it). My other coworker brought a made from scratch red velvet cake and homemade baked beans (show off).

A Glamorous Job

A glamorous job this is. In the facility where I work nurses must wear white except in surgery and some other areas where they wear hospital scrubs. Uniforms are expensive and if you want to wear something cute you are going to pay more. There is only one reputable medical uniform shop in the area otherwise you must order from a catalog or internet. There is not much to choose from when you have to wear white.

White uniforms turn either grey or yellow with about two months washing. They turn yellow if you try to bleach them. They turn grey if you just wash them without bleach. We have to change into hospital scrubs sometimes…just imagine if someone throws up on you. Sometimes I wish we could wear colorful uniforms. The thing with a nurse wearing white is that you look like a nurse. I see lots of people out and about wearing scrubs. Are they healthcare professionals? My neighbor wears scrubs to clean other people’s houses. I dare say not too many cleaning ladies wear white scrubs.

Comedic Relief

Yesterday I was loading trays onto the dinner cart. I had two plates stacked on top of each other and they crashed to the floor and shattered.  I work in ICU so all the pods are attached to one main entrance area. Everyone stopped to look and started laughing. It was either hide in shame or take it….so I took a theatrical bow and a curtsy. Of course, some smarty pants came over this afternoon wondering if I was going to be breaking any plates today. I told smarty pants; ”The day wasn’t over and full of possibilities; do you want me to give you some pointers in case you want to try it yourself”. All in good fun. We love to banter around here.

Humor is important. A good laugh always lifts the spirits and makes the day more positive. A day without a good laugh is not a good day at all.

Fun hub, Tammy! I've often wondered why nurses wear white, too - so impractical :)

Shalini, I totally agree it would be nice to be able to wear some color. Our Hospital is the only one in the area that requires nurses to only wear white.

Hi Tammy - Nothing quite like good, OLD, (?) hospital cafeteria food. My first two days working at the hospital took me into the cafeteria two times. From then on, until I retired years later, I put the cafeteria off-limits. On holidays the hospital gave all of the workers "free meal tickets" for the cafeteria. I always gave my tickets away to unsuspecting, iron-stomached people born without taste buds.

Gus, LOL amazes me that hospital cafeteria food should be so darn gross. I can't eat but a few select things in our cafeteria....stuff I know won't make me sick. When I was pregnant with my first child I picked up a piece of broccoli and found an unexpected source of protein....a big black beetle, no lie at least an inch long. Took me a long time to go back in there.

Hello again, Tammy - I am unsure of whether big, black beetles are worse than the meat slices with green spots all over them. That was when I quit the cafeteria. Give me black beetles but spare me the green spots.

Cute story Tammy. Glad you were able to make your coworkers smile. Good for you!.

I'm surprised you have to wear white. I have spent some time in critical care this week and I didn't see white - it is just the ICU nurses or the entire staff?

Tammy Lochmann profile image

Hi duchess, the entire nursing staff with the exception of surgery has to wear white. While we hated it at first. It tends to make nurses look more professional. At least while the uniforms are still looking crisp and white LOL. Thanks for reading and the comment. TTYL

Tammy ,

Hi again. Great article. From working in corrections I know what you mean by the q word,it is rarely q in the correctios dept. I also know what it feels like to have sloppy food from corrections and working as a dialysis nurse for 2 years. I burned out in that short of a period.

Take care have a nice day and break a few more plates its good stress reklief. My therapist told me to buy some old dishes from the garage sales and when I am stressed or mad throw them a nice hard surface like the side of the house... just watch the windows. It really does relieve stress.

Warmest regards, Christal

Excellent article that I enjoyed reading very much, Tammy. I live a few blocks from Florida Hospital, Orlando, and their vegetarian food (SDA Hospital) is so good that they have a huge restaurant full of businesspeople at lunch time who have gone there only for the food!

LOL I almost forgot about that. Glad I wrote it down. The food at our hospital was horrible for a long time. The new Chef has been trying to improve the quality of the food.

Thank you my friend for taking the time to read and make a comment.....Lockerman

Hi Tammy until I read this I never thought of nurses having to pay for uniforms. They are supplied here by the NHS and although the people who do different jobs have different colours, the styles are often similar. Long ago the ward sisters in our hospitals wore very fancy headwear which I suppose this demonstrated their rank.

A nice hub to read, thank you, if you drop plates in the future tell your co-workers you were just checking to see if they were all still wake.

Hi 2uesday...Great to see you...Thanks for dropping by and I am sure I will have the opportunity to drop plates again in the future. I may do it on purpose.

Uniforms are expensive a shirt, coat and pants costs at least $60 and you work more than one shift in a week...adds up...They supply some areas with scrubs like the OR and the delivery room.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. (((hugs))) Tammy
