Simple google loves backlinks, hubpages is love by yahoo more than google, so you need to turn into social bookmarking sites like Digg.com the more backlinks and traffic you have the bigger your chance to be number 1 in google for any keyword.
To further qualify Lester's answer, you also have to go after keywords you have a chance of winning on. If a PR6 site holds the top notch, good luck on dethroning them. Also, you need to be careful of *where* you get your backlinks from, as Google also considers the quality of the site (the PR) from where they originate.
This is a big nut to crack but this technique has worked for me in the past, dethroning many top spots in less than a day. Not however, for a single word phrase, but give it a shot. Create a wordpress blog, on your own site, not the free version. Obviously it would be best if the phrase was in your domain name . Create a post whose title is SEO, place in a category called SEO and lastly make sure your permanlink is sitename.com/SEO/seo
Then go for your backlinks.
I have gotten number one this way without backlinks but I doubt it's likely to work without them for a single word phrase.
In my experience there are three main factors to beconsidered:
1. Keyword competition. The lower the competition, the easier you get #1.
2. Site structure. I've build a mini site with just contains 5 pages (actually just 3 of them have content, since the other two is juts contact page and sitemap), and just by submitting about 5-6 link to social bookmarking and 1 hubs, I can get the First Page, outrank the other bigger site, But nit yet in #1.
3. Backlink. Quality backlink, this is what you need to push it to #1.
If you want my advice, go get the lower competition, and you'll see result soon. There's no use to go after the large competition where the all supersite with lots of staff sitting in first page of google.
One Not-So-Noticed things when it comes to pushing pages in SERP is that your WEbsite doesn't rank for only your Keywords you're optimising for..As an Average,Analyzing milions of websites,it is Concluded that your Webpage will rank for more than 43+ Keywords..
so instead of Focusing on Single Keywords, start Oprimising the site for Secondary Variations and related Terms of the keywords and get Top POsitions, and in no time, your Website will be in Top for the single keywords.
This had worked out well for me..Just test it out..
Well, I can't guaranty you a #1 spot but these simple tips should help you to boast your website rankings.
First there is on page optimization and then off page optimization
On page optimization is implying your keyword throughout your site in areas that Google takes notice of. In a hub these areas will be in your title, image caption, tags, headings, description, URL and in the body of your text several times.
Off page optimization is basically getting 'quality' back links to your site. Back links are links to your webpage without you linking back. Hope i helped!
Ok fist thing. Using Google adwords is not SEO. In my opinion it is a sell out.
Onsite SEO is less important nowadays except for a few things.
1. Unique and interesting content.
2. Good meta tags for keywords
3. keyword density
4. Google site map
5. Link to the comnunity
Nowadays your websites presence in the community is very important...linking Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and some others helps you website in the SERPs.
Create Hubpages and link them to your website. Remember that they are nofollow until the reach 85.
There are literally hundreds maybe thousands of ways to boast your website. The key is tenacity. Research. And get started. Wash and rinse. Do it again a different way.
Good Luck
Quality back links from high PR sites help in high SERP. Links from different SEO sources are very important, as Google like links through different sources/domains

Hello Everyone, I’m primarily a writer, not a computer buff or web-site designer and in my other attempts at on-line writing I haven’t been trying to earn money, so I haven’t bothered about gaining traffic. I’m patient, I’ve read it takes a while to build up earnings, but from what...

Can anyone help me figure out how to best optimize my hubs? I have several that have scores of 90 and above but they hardly get any views...I'm not sure how I could improve that. Even ones that have been changed by Hubpages' editors still don't get much traffic. Is it just the titles that I should...
