Hi Janna - It depends. If you buy soap at the dollar store and get 4 bars for a dollar, the homemade soap will cost you more. But that is comparing apples to oranges, two different things. Mine winds up costing me about $3.00 a bar to make, but they are big, chunky bars. Mass produced items of any kind are usually of a lower quality than home made. Mass produced soaps are often not even soap, but a kind of detergent. The glicerine is often removed in commercial products so the manufactured soap is less gentle for your skin. You have to then go out and buy lotions with added glicerine to moisturize.
