It's been tried many times over thousands of years. When those who do not work to provide themselves with food and whatever it is they need they become dependent either on the kindness of others or they take their chances with the earth.
When a society is forced to provide for those who are able but unwilling to provide for themselves, it causes the workers to become unwilling to work, seeing their hard labor go to slackers.
Society will break down. In our modern world, people will begin to hide money so it can't be taken away from them. Those with less will or stamina will simply begin to work less.
We are not forced to work. One can make his way in the world however he sees fit if he can survive without 'working'. Even those who go into monastarys as a way of retreating from the modern world are expected to work to uphold the community but at least everyone there pulls equal weight.
I feel you, Eilander, and feeling the dream being pulled from you is like being a wild horse who is broken, a child who's innocence is taken away. It does something to a person and you can never go back - at least not to being the same as you were. Hang on to the dream, Eilander. Find a way for yourself. Rruunnnn!
