Ergonomic Computer Chairs

Ergonomic Computer Chair

One of the key elements of a great ergonomic computer chair is the way it can keep you from getting back pain the way a less quality chair will inevitably give you, as well as help prevent motion injuries that sometimes come from a badly designed chair.

If you sit in job and do work for any significant time on a computer, it's imperative to get a really good ergonomic computer chair; whether it's in the work place or at home.

What a good ergonomic computer chair will do is make sure you keep the correct posture while sitting, which if it doesn't do it, will result in back pain and posture problems if you work like that for a long time.

Support is the key here, and a good, adjustable ergonomic computer desk chair will go a long way towards supporting your back with a variety of adjustments, and help you keep the right posture for maximum comfort and efficiency.

Lumbar Region

One of the more important purposes of the ergonomic computer chair is the protection and support of the lumbar region of the back, which will keep you from experiencing lumbar pain, which isn't something any of us want to experience.

If you've ever had a lumbar treatment of lumbar injury, you know how important it is to prevent the need for lumbar surgery, which is difficult to go through and recover from.

As most people know, back surgery is very risky in the sense of ever having it return to normal again, and it's best to go the preventative route via lumbar support with an ergonomic computer chair than to go through a long, tedious recovery period. So a lumbar chair is a significant part of preventing that from happening.

Ergonomic computer chair guidelines

So to get the best back lumbar support, a chair a width of a least a foot to 20 inches wide is desirable, and it should also have a variety of places it can be locked in place after being adjusted to best fit and support the natural curvature of your spine.

Ergonomic computer chair backrest

If you decide to acquire a ergonomic computer chair with a backrest that is included as one piece with the seat, then you want to be sure you can adjust it backward and forward.

On the other hand, if the ergonomic desk chair has a backrest and seat that are not connected as one, then the height and angle of the chair needs to be adjustable.

More on lumbar support

The lumbar region of the back, in case you're not sure, is the lower, inward curve of the back, which is where the majority of lumbar support will focus on.

So you want to be sure the ergonomic computer chair includes the ability to adjust both the depth as well as the height of the chair for maximum lumbar support.

Ergonomic computer chair height adjustment

The normal advice and best practices for any ergonomic chair, including an ergonomic computer chair, is that your feet should be able to lie flat on the floor while your thighs are horizontal with the floor.

If you struggle to get this right with a chair, just get some blocks or something you can put under your feet until that desired position is achieved.

But most people should be covered by the seat height adjustment, which is normally between 16 to 21 inches above the floor.

The other part of the equation is your arms should also be horizontal with the desk height, offering you great posture, protection from injury, and maximum comfort.

Sitting on your ergonomic computer chair

When you sit in your ergonomic office chair, you should be comfortable and supported at the same time.

One measurement or indicator to look for here is the distance between the back of the chair and the seat of the chair. When sitting down with your back against the chair, there should be between two to four inches of space between the two.

Ergonomic computer chair armrests

One of the more neglected but vital parts of working comfortably in an ergonomic office chair is the armrests. Everything else can be right, but if this isn't right, the rest won't matter, as your shoulders won't be able to relax, and your arms can get fatigued from working at the wrong angles.

So along with some type of padding on the armrests, you should be able to sit in the chair while your shoulders are relaxed. If not, get a chair that you can relax in, as that tenseness can where you down and cut back on your work efficiency and productivity.

As you see, there's a lot more to working on a computer than it seems at first, and a quality ergonomic computer chair goes a big way toward making it a pleasant experience versus a lot of discomfort day after day.
