how to change the joomla virtuemart page checkout template link with a paypal button

If you are a virtuemart eCommerce user and you want to replace the checkout text link with a paypal button, or even your own checkout button, then here is my guide to help you. This solution will help you if you are just wanting to keep working with the standard paypal module in virtuemart, but want your store to look more professional.

If your like me, you have searched everywhere online, including the complete virtuemart forum, and found nothing to help, then finally you will be glad to read this!

ok, it does involve a slight hack to get round the problems that you have probably already experianced when you try to change the link.

In summery how i managed to finally get the paypal button showing was by replacing the arrow button with the paypal button, and then reducing the text to a zero font size.

I found this was the only way i could get it working, and although i still had to add a couple of extra lines of css code into the template, it does work.

Replace the image file

You will find the forward arrow image in your template folder.

Make sure that you just overwrite the arrow button with the same name button that you have named your paypal button with. Check that the button is actually showing up in the virtuemart checkout page, before you go any further.

Adjust your template css

You will need to log into your joomla backend template.

Then edit the template and look for the template.css file.

This is where you have to add the little hack. Search for the section that has the checkout link as shown:

.checkout_link, .checkout_link:hover {

Now under that is the text that controls how the checkout link is displayed.

It doesn't work by just changing the font size, as this also changes the button size too, so you have to add a little extra code.

.checkout_link, .checkout_link:hover {
	font-size:15px;
	display:block;
	position:relative;
	width:200px;
	height:25px;

	font-size: 0px;
	color: #ffff;
	background: url(../images/forward.png) no-repeat right center;
}

checkout link

Add the code above in place of what is already there. You can just comment out the previous code to make sure that you don't have any problems.
