How Schools Are Implementing Social Media For Education

Education and Social Media, a Growing Trend

Throughout the world, computers and the internet are more widely available than ever before. People of all ages and backgrounds are able to access it through handheld devices, phones, tablets, desktop computers, and laptops. They have the internet in their homes, schools, offices, and even in restaurants and other public places.

The wide availability of the internet is one of the major contributors to the popularity of social media. Through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, and online forums and message boards, people have constant access to the most recent news, information on products, celebrity gossip, and can even find out what their friends and acquaintances are up to.

Many universities have realized that social media is here to stay and, therefore, have implemented it as part of their organization. Not only does this allow students to more easily access information, but it is also a great tool for administrators, professors, coaches and other staff members.

Scholastic Application

Professors in schools all over the country are utilizing social media as a means to provide their students quick access to class announcements, schedules, and homework assignments. They also post learning materials such as articles and video tutorials on websites. When they make these things available online, students are able to take a few minutes to do class work no matter where they are.

Students take advantage of social media as a means to communicate with each other and with their professors. They may create a Facebook event to organize a meeting for a group project. They may also use forums and message boards to converse with each other about the things they are learning in class. In fact, the internet allows students to actually meet and collaborate with each other without even having to gather at a set location.

By implementing the use of online education through social media, schools are able to reach out to many different students and allow them to enhance their learning experience.

School Spirit

Another way that many schools are using social media is to help students create a community of spirit and unity. Using Facebook, they can either create a page for an organization, such as a sports team or club, where they can post upcoming events and pictures. They can create a page for their mascot or another important figure in their school.

They can also have online competitions or offer free swag to students, alumni, and members of the community. Not only do social media outlets allow students to express pride for their school, they can also get other people involved and generate a network of support.

Career Development

The career opportunities that are provided through a college are unparalleled by any other organization. Job fairs, alumni groups, teacher recommendations, and other events or groups give students the ability to find out more about their potential career fields. They can network with people who are actually in the field before they even graduate or get their first job.

Professors are also able to learn more about what is going on in their field by using social networking as a communication tool. They can help their students get in contact with alumni and representatives from some of the top businesses relating to their area of focus.

Reaching Out After Graduation

Schools are also using social networks as a means for Alumni to stay in touch with each other and keep in contact with the school. They can promote upcoming events and even invite people individually so that they have better community involvement and attendance. The parents of students can also connect with the school so that they can stay up to date on what is going on.

In order to continually improve certain aspects of the school, administrators can reach out to students, parents, and members of the community by using social media. They start conversations where people have the opportunity to give feedback and express their opinions. By doing this, educators and administrators have more complete access to understanding the needs of their students. They can use the information that they find to adapt their policies, curricula, activities, and groups to the needs of the students.

By using social media, schools can promote student involvement and give them a wider range of tools for success. The internet provides a means by which students can enhance their learning and network with professors, other students, and professionals in their future industry.
