Creating Dividers to Use on Your Hubs

Attribute the Dividers:

I have been informed that all dividers should have attribution. I even have to attribute the dividers I create in my own hubs. As you will see I have indicated the source under each divider. But to make this process easy, if you use dividers from this page, I recommend that you a create a box similar to this one somewhere in your hub that states, "All dividers used in this hub are used with permission granted on hub, Creating Dividers to Use on Your Hubs." In fact you can just cut and paste this statement from this document. Make sure that the hub title is hyperlinked to this hub and you are covered.

So many of you have asked how to create dividers to use on your hubs. I have included below more than 30 dividers I have created for your use. I will explain how to download them to your computer for your use.

The software that I have available for my use is either free or I have had for more than 10 years, so my dividers will not be terribly elaborate until I get better at creating them. In MissOlive's hub, Bling My Hub!, she indicates that you can also use Power Point to create them, but I do not currently have Power Point. Check her hub out for that information.

Using the Dividers Provided with this Hub

Once you have the following dividers loaded onto your computer, all you have to do is insert a picture capsule and upload the divider into your hub. So let's look at what it takes to get one of these onto your computer.

Let's look at saving the "Blue Faded to Black Divider" to your computer. Place your mouse over the image of the divider, then right click.

Blue Faded to Black Divider
Blue Faded to Black Divider | Source
Right Click on the Divider you want to save onto your computer.
Right Click on the Divider you want to save onto your computer.

Right clicking on the divider, and choosing the option "Save Image As ... " will give you a window similar to the one shown above. Type in a file name such as blue-black-divider. Then save the divider. (I have created a file folder and keep all my dividers in this one easy to find location.)

It is really that simple. You now have your first divider to use on your hubs.

Repeat this process with one of the dividers below or all of them, the choice is entirely yours.

To use, insert a photo capsule into your hub, and upload the divider from your file folder on your computer.

Happy Hubbing!

Additional Information

The above instructions are for PC users.

Melovy has so graciously added the process for Mac users: "For Macs you can still right click (people have to go to preferences and right-click enable their mouse first). And you can save it straight to iPhoto which then makes it very easy to upload to HP."

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask them and I will address them as best as I can. Happy Hubbing!

Check Back Often

I intend to continue to add dividers especially special ones for holidays so check back often.

I can't believe that you have just done this. Only today I was reading a hub with great dividers and I told myself that I must find out how to do this. Here you are just in the nick of time. Thanks for sharing this.

Gorgeous!!!! I love these! I worry that my layouts are becoming about as boring as last year's wardrobe (which generally dates back more than last year, but that's off topic). Thanks for sharing these - I will use them wisely and with gratitude!

Voted up, awesome and useful!

Amazing tutorial hub! I've used a few dividers and they just add a little more pizzaz to the look of the hub. Thank you for sharing your borders. You are so thoughtful and generous! Voted up and shared! :)

Wow this is so generous of you Homesteadbound. For Macs you can still right click (people have to go to preferences and right-click enable their mouse first). And you can save it straight to iPhoto which then makes it very easy to upload to HP.

Thanks so much for this hub.

Excellent help for our hub friends. I believe you can alter some od your colors in photoshop as well. Niver got into mac, but my suggestion is to go to the sources on the net. Common sense will prevail for Mac users. Thanks Cindy!

What a fantastic idea to share the dividers you've made and provide the simple directions for using them (sorry, no MAC here-PC for me, too!)

I've created several very easily, using PowerPoint, and I'm thinking I'd like to share them with Hubbers, too. Now I'm thinking HP could set up a Divider Library. Oh well, one thought at a time!

Super helpful, Cindy, a great thing to do for not just this community, but for anyone who wants to add a simple graphic element to help organize information for readers. Up, useful, interesting. ~Sherri

poshcoffee - So many people have wanted to use these but did not know how to create them. I sat down and created 95% of these today just for people to use. I don't use them all the time, but when I want them, it is nice to have them. Now I have a nice collection to choose from.

Deborah Brooks - I was hoping that you would find these useful. I think you were one of those that asked for them. My gift to you! I will continue to add them throughout the year for different holidays and such.

Marcy - hope you are able to use them. I cannot imagine anything that you wrote would be boring.

Rusticliving - I hope you find these useful. You have been creating some hubs with some real pizzaz lately, so I know you can do this for yourself as well.

Melovy - I hope you enjoy the use of these. I know you had one of these, but sometimes a different color or style fits in better with what you want to do or a mood you want to create. Thanks for providing the Mac instructions. I will move it up into the text and credit you with the add.

Thanks to all of you for stopping by and sharing your wonderful words.

lord de cross - I do not have photoshop either. I have a $9 software I bought in 2002 that I have been using to make these. Then I move them to another software to save in the proper format for HubPages.

randomcreative - too bad they have removed the bookmarks. I hope you are able to find this when you want it.

Sally's Trove - I made these dividers just for y'all. I have only used one of these. I made the rest of them today. A divider library is something that I mentioned in a hub where I talked about changes I would like to see on HP.

Phil Plasma - I hope you find that they add to your hubs.

cherylone - I hope you enjoy your experiments. I will be adding more of these as time goes on, so be sure to check back.

vicki goodwin - I hope you do find them to be useful.

BRIAN SLATER - they can dress up a hub. That is for sure. Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks to all of you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

Great Hub. I haven't been doing this very long but I like to break up my hubs and am always looking for different ways to do it. This is one more option.

Also, for Macs to clarify a little. If you want to change preferences, it is system preferences. System preferences is found by clicking on the apple symbol in the upper left corner of your screen. A menu pops up and you can scroll down to system preferences and click on it. Then you would have to go to keyboard and mouse hardware option and click on that to change your preferences.

All that said, I have a MacBook with a trackpad and no mouse. My trackpad only has one bar to click with (basic function would be the equivalent of left clicking with a PC). But, I can right click also. To right click with a single bar trackpad, hold down the "control" key while simultaneously clicking on the trackpad bar. A menu pops up and you can click on "Save Image As ..."

When you click on this, a small screen pops up. The first line is where you fill in the name of the image (A name auto fills but you can change it). Be sure to leave the title of the image as "... .jpg" so that it gets identified as a picture. The next line asks "Where", where do you want the image saved? It is a pull down menu of options. I usually put it on the desktop so I know where it is and can refile it later. The third line asks the Format, in this case "JPEG Picture". Then click on the "Save" button and the image will be downloaded to your computer for future use.

I wish I knew how to make images of my desktop, it would be easier to explain if you could see it.

It is too bad that they removed the bookmarks option with the new HP. But, you can still creat a "hubPages" bookmark file in your brower's bookmarks (I use Foxfire and can do it there, I am not sure about IE). You can file all of your favorite hubs in there.

What a great idea! I have noticed some of these, but never gave it much thought. Thank you for sharing these ideas.

The instructions are pretty easy, and I think I could easily create them in Print Shop, which has both clip art and an "export" feature, allowing projects to be saved in jpeg format.

The question is, "Why didn't I think of this before?" ;-)

Voted up, interesting, useful and shared.

bankscottage - Thanks for sharing your expertise with the Mac and with the MacBook. The instructions you have provided seem fairly clear to me and I have never been on a Mac. Thanks

PurvisBobbi44 - I hope these work for you, and my instructions are clear. If not, please let me know so I can fix them. Like I said, I feel like I have left something out!

Victoria Lynn - I can't understand why they have removed the bookmarks. I need to go through mine and save them. You could create a text file and cut and paste the URLs into it to save your hubs that you want. Just an idea. I hope you enjoy using these.

A really easy way to make a divider is to go to flikr and do an advanced search for abstract art. If you make sure it is the Creative Commons section, you can crop the picture down to a suitable size, and insert it into your article.

homesteadbound;

this must be one of the most useful, yet simplest to use, pages of advice on HubPages. I am a great believer in making hubpages look as attractive (and therefore as professional) as possible, and to this end I have been using dividers in all my hubs for a long time. However, not being blessed with great knowledge of how to use paint / power point / graphics programmes, my dividers have been simple monocoloured bars. Whilst I am happy to share my method of creating dividers, yours are so much better and open up a much greater range of possibilities.

Thank you for sharing them and making them available to others to use. I trust your generosity in sharing these will be repaid in some way.

Voted up.

Though I can create dividers, I have never used on my hubs. Maybe I could use dividers in future.

Many hub authors will find this hub very useful.

I have a tiny cat divider I routinely sprinkle through posts on my blog, but because of the odd placement of ads on hubs, don't often use dividers here at HubPages.

However, this hub inspired a few ideas I'm going to play around with. Thanks, Cindy!

Voted up, useful and awesome! ;D

Vinaya - I don't use dividers on all of my hubs, in fact I only use them on a few, but when I want to use them, I like the ability to create the kind I want! I am happy to be able to make this available to more people!

Wow Homesteadbound, this is just what I need to make my hubs more attractive! Thanks for doing all the work for me! Do you know if we have to cite a reference after each place we insert the divider or can we just put it once and say all dividers were found here? Thanks! Kelley

homesteadbound profile image

homesteadbound 4 years ago from Texas Author

Kelley - What I do and what I have seen others do is to put one statement at the end of the hub stating that all dividers can be found... or I would say, and if you created some of your own you would say, all dividers in this hub were created by the author using Printmaster. Enjoy them!

Hi Cindy,

I have made some of my own by simply shrinking down a photo to the right size. I had no idea that the dividers should be attributed however if they were our own creations. Wow! I've got work to do! Your creations are really pretty and I have seen some people using them and attributing them back to you. Nice work! Sharing!

Great collection of dividers here. I rarely used dividers in my previous hubs, mostly because I didn't think about them. But after seeing some very unique looking hubs, I might give it a try. After all, if the page is appealing to the eye of the reader, maybe they'll stick around longer. Thank you fro your hard work here on this hub.

Hello there, homesteadbound. I have seen my friend SuzieHQ use these in her articles, and I have thought how nice it would be to use them, as well. They give articles an especially organized look, and I like the range of colors you have provided!

Anyway, I just saved some of them to my computer, and am using them for the first time. I just wanted to pop in here and officially thank you for sharing these with us, and telling us how to use them, as well as how to attribute them. This will be a very big help!

jhoang - thanks so much hope you enjoy using them.

OMGirdle - Yes they will show up as images, but I have something I want to check out. I will get back with you on this. - Cindy

homesteadbound profile image

homesteadbound 3 years ago from Texas Author

Hi OMGirdle - none of the dividers show up on this hub in the slide show and they are all photos. I think images have to be a certain size to show up, and maybe that is why they are not. Hope this helps. - Cindy

Hi Cindy. Thanks for these lovely dividers. You have so many of all kinds. I have a few on my hubs and really enjoy them. I think staff or Google prefer not to have them, but hubbers use them. Thanks for sharing. Pinning. Blessings. Audrey. Here's to good health for you

homesteadbound profile image

homesteadbound 2 years ago from Texas Author

Yeah, brakel2, I think that they do not like them, at least HubPages doesn't. I have started removing some of them from my hubs, but there are times when I will continue to use them.

This divider-idea is so simple and easy that I wonder why no one thought of this before. Great idea. Thanks for sharing. (One word of caution: each extra image/photo slows down the page speed which in turn affects search-engine ranking and user experience.)

homesteadbound profile image

homesteadbound 2 years ago from Texas Author

Thanks for the word of caution. Definitely something to consider, but I have several hubs with easily over fifty macro-photography images that have no problem loading.

Thank you.
