Earn money from HubPages? 4 Weeks 38 Followers 30 Hubs 1000 views 31 cents and a few Accolades

Did you know that you can write and earn money on HubPages?’ is what my friend asked me a few months back.

No’ I said.

I hear that many people are earning thousands of dollars every month by publishing content’, she said.

In a sarcastic tone, I said ‘Really?

Yes. Why don’t you check it out? You have been doing freelance writing in the past, haven’t you?’ she asked.

Yes’, I said.

‘How do I know it is not one of those Make Money Online websites which promise big bucks but deliver pennies?’, I asked her.

‘I don’t know about all that. It looks like the real deal. HubPages is on wikipedia too!’, she said.

The whole world is on wikipedia’, I murmured to myself.

Anyways, that was that. My curiosity finally got the better of me and I registered at HubPages. After the first few days, it hit me that HubPages is much more than just a website on which you can publish content and earn.

It has been 1 month since I registered at Hubpages. Now I ask myself.

Can you really earn at HubPages?

Why am I logging into HubPages every single day even though I am travelling?

What makes HubPages special?

What do these accolades mean?

I decided to write this Hub to recap on my first month at HubPages and I hope that this helps out fellow beginners here.

HubPages – Princesswithapen

At HubPages I’m Princesswithapen.

I published my first Hub. I found the HubPages layout pretty user-friendly. It works well, especially for users like me who don’t have a background in IT.

I published 10 hubs. Happily, I found out that I received an accolade for writing 10 hubs at HubPages.

Interacting with other Hubbers turned out to be more interesting than I imagined.Commenting on other Hubs comes naturally and you find yourself to be a part of a thriving online community. So much so, I am active on HubPages on a daily basis even though I am travelling right now.

I found HubHopping a great way to come across different types of Hubs and learn. If you are a beginner on HubPages and are looking for a place to start learning, HubHopping will be your best friend. Hop hubs everyday to learn, learn and learn.

The Accolade on my profile which says 'princesswithapen is a level II commentator, leaving insightful and engaging comments'

HubPages thought that I leave insightful comments and made me a Level II commentator. I haven’t found out if that helps my views or revenue in any way. But hey, any accolade is more than welcome on my HubPages profile.

I also published the hub How to Deal with Peer Pressure which got selected as a HubNugget Candidate. I’m glad it did. Do you know why? Because it gave me some sort of assurance that there are people who are reading the content that you publish – Gives you a sense of satisfaction, doesn’t it?

You can vote for my hub at the HubNugget Candidate Hubpage. On the HubNugget Candidate Hubpage title ABC HubNugget School, scroll down and look for The Gender and Relationship Nominees. You will find my hub How to Deal with Peer Pressure. Simply click and vote!

HubPages also thought that Princesswithapen was popular among readers because of the feedback my hubs received. Great! I’m happy that readers at HubPages found my hubs interesting. That’s what we all want, don’t we?

Earning money from HubPages

Let’s talk money!

In June 2011, my hubs generated a revenue of 25 cents.

In July 2011, my hubs have generated 6 cents so far.

In total, after 30 hubs, the revenue generated from publishing content on HubPages is 31 cents.

Publish hubs and earn money – Really?’, I ask myself.

After a month on HubPages, I find that like any other job, there are no free lunches here. Here is my experience on HubPages.

  • The HubPages community is warm and friendly.

  • HubPages is easy to use and understand, even for beginners.

  • Signing up with affiliates like Google Adsense and Amazon is simple. There are no complicated procedures that need to be followed.

  • It is great fun to interact with other Hubbers.

  • And most importantly, do not expect to become an overnight millionaire from HubPages. If you do, come tell me how and I will gladly pay you for your services.

The HubPages Verdict – 1 month test

31 cents in one month. Should I stay at HubPages?

Or should I continue focusing on freelance jobs that pay on a per-word/per article basis?

I have decided to stay and there are 3 reasons for my decisions.

1) HubPages is a gradual learning and earning curve. Fellow hubbers advice that ‘real earnings’ start only when you have a solid foundation of original and interesting hubs, which by the way can take 6 months to 1 year (minimum). Fingers crossed!

2) HubPages introduces you to people from different parts of the world. Many in the HubPages community realise that we must support each other to fulfil our dreams. The more you share, the more you learn and benefit.

3) If you like writing, you will love HubPages.

As I continue Hubbing on HubPages, I will keep writing hubs about my experience at HubPages which I hope are helpful to fellow beginner hubbers like me.

That;s $0.31 more than me. I haven't even set up an account. But I do enjoy writing and communicatong with other hubbers. So, you are exactly right. Anything you make is a bonus. Don't spend it all in one place.

Husky I wonder how much you'd make right now if you set up those accounts. Don't you feel curious to find out?

I'll try not to spend my 31 cents all at once! Haha.

Thanks for commenting.

Sounds like you're fitting in well here. It took me a few years to get to the $100 threshold. Sadly, I admit that I wrote on and off and didn't commit to writing as much as I should. Something that helps me with views is to comment on other's hubs. Usually they return the favor; this is the same with following. Also, I share my hubs like crazy on facebook and twitter. I have alot of friends and followers that help me with revenue. Great and useful hub! Keep up your writing!

I just started writing hubs about 3 weeks ago, but I joined 5 months ago. Now that I am actively writing hubs (I've only written 3) I believe I'll

have to write far more than what I've been doing in order for me to become relevant. I was thinking that I would write one hub a week but now I understand that would be completely non-productive if I want to make any money.

Hi carol3san

You're right. You will have to write more than your current pace. I also believe that more than 'how much you write' it is important that we all pick up tips on 'how to write better and smarter'. As I mentioned, I've learnt a lot from Hub Hopping.

From my interaction with other hubbers, I've found out that there are different styles and views out there regarding writing hubs, making money and having fun. Some believe in giving out tons and tons of content every single day while some focus on niche topics.

It's good to know that there are other fellow hubbers out there trying to figure out the same things that I am. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Hi Flora

I can see that you have established a solid following in the 4 weeks you've been here. The way you're going and if what I've heard from other hubbers is true, your 17 cents may jump a few decimal places in no time if you continue to be active. Only time will tell.

The great things is that I've noticed a strong sense of support within the HubPages community which may go a long way.

I love hubpages and being able to write about pretty much any topic you want. It reminds me of the music that music instructors I know play at the end of the evening when the last student leaves and they no longer have to perform the music listed in the Toronto Conservatory of music guidelines for specific grades and exams. Now it is time for them to play their music, for the love of music.

You're right. The sense of community and friendship is a core part of everyone's existence here at hubpages. Having said that, earning money from hubpages too is the purpose of everyone's (almost everyone) existence here. I've only witnessed the former, with the later yet to be seen.

princess--

Thanks for a useful Hub. I've thought of doing something of the sort, but have postponed doing so thus far.

It is a slow slog to make what one might call 'real' money. Still, you are off to a much faster start than I made--after your short time on this forum, you've nearly as many Hubs, and half as many followers as I have from 2 years. Have to think that you're likely to be well ahead of me on the revenue front when you hit the 2 year mark!

(Where am I? $33 and change.)

princesswithapen profile image

princesswithapen 5 years ago Author

33 and change after 2 years on hubpages? That's hard to believe, Doc. I knew hubpages was a slow slog but not this slow.

From what I've learnt from other hubbers is that you can convert this slow slog into a not-so-slow one by making use of keywords and other techniques which I'm yet to grasp entirely.

Oh well, I guess the essence of hubpages lies in going on a massive learning curve and finding out what you can do with great content and the love of writing. Did I mention the awesome times you have catching up with people across the globe?

Here's a thought, Doc. Why don't you embark upon a journey to increase your hubs, views and earnings from hubpages? Maybe set a target and a goal and then write a hub about how you went about it?

Anyways, thanks for stopping by Doc. Your feedback especially about the $$ is much appreciated. Food for thought for many new hubbers reading this.

Well, right now I'm on a journey to repair my house (creamed by a tree on April 5), buy a retirement property that my wife and I can barely afford, and find more paid work.

I've been able to put 'pushes' on to write more, and have seen positive results from doing so. However, life keeps getting in the way of doing so on a more consistent basis!

The good news is that all this has provided some good material to write about; the bad, there's a real time crunch to find the time to write about it.

princesswithapen profile image

princesswithapen 5 years ago Author

Hi psychicdog

I wrote this hub 4 months back and I am yet to see a revenue stream that is even mildly capable of being called pocket money. I make a living writing freelance for clients outside HubPages. That pays the bills and a lot more. I see HubPages as a long term investment that will hopefully pay big in terms of revenue and more importantly, business contacts.

HubPages has also taught me a lot about publishing online and some key tips that writers (especially online writers) must use. I incorporate whatever I've learnt here into my freelance writing which in turn benefits the end client. This is a win-win situation for me.

And yes, the benefit of meeting different people is like icing on the cake. I have made friends from across the globe who are now strong pillars of support to my online venture, or should I say, my online avatar.

I plan to write a similar hub very soon which will hopefully be loaded with better numbers in terms of money, and much more. Thanks for stopping by on this one.

Just to check back in, my earnings are up quite a bit, due primarily to activating HPAds. As expected, it has nearly killed my Google earnings--they are back to a few cents a month, just as in the very beginning--but has more than compensated by providing a new and more lucrative revenue stream. Should see my first 'pocket change' from Hubpages early in the New Year.

But my page views continue to build, and I'm thinking of new ways to leverage my HP work--in addition to the improvement in my writing skills due to the "practice" on Hubpages. Re-writing and editing are more satisfying when you know that you have some audience, albeit a relatively small one.

And it looks as if we'll be back in our own house for Christmas--we're just in the process of laying down this really nice travertine tile in the master bath right now. . .

But excuse me now; I've got to email the contractor a list of supplies we picked out!

You are a star for stopping by on this hub again. Thanks heaps! I'm really glad and I'm sure that others who are reading this will get a little inspiration too. There has been a lot of talk whether the HP Earnings Programs works or not, and your case has just silenced many.

"..I'm thinking of new ways to leverage my HP work.." what you said here is one of the keys to success as an online writer. Looks like you are on the right track.

Whatever happened to the goal of belting out more hubs? Have you been taking many pictures of the repairs of your house? Surely now you have tons of DIY stuff and more to write about.

Well I hope the house is coming along just as you expected. Good luck with the repairs and hope they get done by Christmas.

Thanks!

"Whatever happened to the goal of belting out more hubs?"

Got a few more done, including some rather ambitious ones, but time remains tight. House stuff is like another job.

"Have you been taking many pictures of the repairs of your house?"

Oh, yeah. They'll probably make it to HP eventually, too.

"Surely now you have tons of DIY stuff and more to write about."

Well, 'I have a little list. . .' but it's less DIY than you might think--there's climate stuff, a philosophy piece, and of course music Hubs just calling out for the time to write them.

Thanks for the good wishes, and I hope your Thanksgiving and Christmas turn out beautifully!

I'm greatly encouraged by this hub. I joined 2 months ago, but only started posting content 2 weeks ago. I've earned over $3 so far, have over 1000 views (though I'm not sure why the badge isn't showing on my profile) and I love the energy here. Hubbers are awesome.

I thought I was moving at a slow pace, but after reading this I feel like I'm doing something right (lol).

You are so right about needing to put the effort into it. When I wasn't writing, I was promoting my articles ALL over the place to pull in traffic. The process has given me a real understanding of how to "work" social media.

Have the tides turned for you since posting this hub?

princesswithapen profile image

princesswithapen 5 years ago Author

Hi katina

The tides have indeed, turned since the day I wrote this hub. Traffic and earnings have gone through a world of change. I want to do a hub some point down the line which outlines this change.

It seems that you are already an established writer with an e-book under your belt. Unique and well written articles will always find an audience at HubPages. It is only a matter of time after you will see the traffic and earnings pouring into your own hubs.

Yes, this is a slow journey but think of it as laying a strong foundation. Tall buildings don't survive without a strong foundation!

Thanks heaps for sharing your own experience. I will post an update when I write my next hub about progress and earnings on HubPages.

What most hubbers and online writers fail to accept is that it is unique articles, i.e. unique content, that is going to matter most when it comes to driving traffic to your website. You can utilize all the so-called tricks and tips in the world, but if you lack content, you won't get too far.

I've two of your hubs and I must say that you're on to a much better start than many of us. So let's for the time being assume that you have the content part covered. Keep writing original articles and learn from other hubbers how to amp up your articles from a keyword perspective, linking, affiliate marketing and more.

Don't expect overnight traffic, don't expect overnight windfalls, but expect a warm community and expect to make many new friends here at HubPages. Welcome aboard and feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Don't forget.. There are many other ways to use your hubs to make money online. It's not just good for Adsense profits. I have used several of my hubs to inform others about useful Clickbank products. If they buy the product, I make money. It's a win win situation, I help someone find a solution to their problem and I am rewarded with cash! Same thing with Amazon, and Ebay capsules except Clickbank pays out more per sale.

I was kind of skeptic as well during my first time here. I thought it was just like the usual blogging sites elsewhere. So i gave it a try and waited to see what will happen. But Hubpages is a lot DIFFERENT. It's an avenue where you showcase your expertise or budding talent in writing. It could also serve as a credible source of information and a reliable online portfolio you could enlist in your curriculum vitae in case you'd be applying for writing stints or full time jobs. Also, there is the beauty of constant learning and communication from fellow hubbers. So far, everyone here are so friendly and helpful.

These are the things you won't find from any other social networking or blog sites. And I guess this is not some strategy they use - its GENUINENESS. That's why we keep coming back for more. :)

I've only been here for 7 months and just reached 50 hubs. HP Ads brings me most of my earnings while Adsense could add a little something here and there. I've only made five dollars and change from HP Ads. I have about $35 in Adsense, but not all that is from HP, much of it was built up over the last 5 years from other sites.

All I've written about so far are mostly reviews of popular bad movies and music videos. I do plan to expand my topics at some point, but right now I have a list and I write those reviews because I'm passionate about writing them.

I have just joined a few days ago, and my goal is to write at least one relatively relevant hub per day and, as you state, learn, learn, learn as I do it.

@dianaferguson: would you consider (or have you already) writing a hub regarding how you worked the social media?

Thanks again, fellow hubbers! This Hub helped me a lot in my start!

You seem to be an established and experienced blogger and avid writer. Like any other writing venture, the HubPages platform is a test of patience, hard work and most importantly, the quality and originality of content. You seem to have a varied online portfolio which can serve as a way to promote your hubs. Prima facie, you may be poised to be the next success story if you play your cards right.

Stephen

You know you are sitting on a gold mine because you already have other sites working for you since over 5 years. Expanding your topic base and writing more about what you love writing about, as you mention, definitely seems to be the way to go. All the best and I hope to see you around more often.

everymom

You may come across writers with 200+ hubs with the same amout of views, accolades and revenue as someone with just 100 hubs. If you really stick to your goal of 1 hub a day and actively promote your hubs via the community and other relevant platforms, a steady revenue stream is definitely not a tough ask. However, that will not happen overnight. Like you've probably read from the comments above, patience should be your middle name when it comes to building reputation and traffic. The HubPages community is a friendly one and hubbers will go out of their way to help you and everyone else. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you, again, princesswithapen, for the encouragement! I have found that HubPages is everything you say, and more. Every encounter with a Hubber so far has been supportive, nurturing, instructive, enriching my writing and my life. I don't expect to become the HubPages Millionaire any time soon, but I am encouraged to know that it is not only a forum for my content but also a place for that content to generate revenue, albeit slowly. I will most certainly turn to you for help and advice, and I hope that you will let me know when and how I can return the favor! Be well, Everymom.

Hi, again, "princess!"

Just checking back again with another update, as I know that this is would be what I'd like to know--but I'm glad to say that:

1) I did indeed earn a payout in January for HPAds!

2) I was invited to do a guest post on a prominent blog;

3) My music hubs on "part-writing" surprised me by doing relatively well, so I've been pushing them a bit, with 5 out in the last couple of months;

4) My page views (and revenue) have trended sharply up over the last month. Not sure why, so I don't completely trust it, but it seems a pretty robust trend.

In short, Hub life is pretty good right now. And still lots of stuff I haven't been able to make time to write about!

I think hubpages is so much addictive that it is not too hard to earn the badges. Moreover, it is easier to earn good money from Hubpages ad program.

Lot's of good stuff here...article and comments. I write biz stuff but I've been accused of being a bit, uh..direct..in my approach to small biz issues. Only time will tell.

Firstly, thanks for stopping by and filling us up on your progress. I've always been an advocate of the fact that HubPages, besides being a terrific platform to publish and earn, can also serve as platform to scoop further writing opportunities. The fact that you were invited to do a guest post on a popular blog is simply awesome. You must capitalize on this and build up on your writing portfolio.

I too have seen a steady buildup of traffic and revenue. After a certain milestone, plan on publishing a part 2 of this hub that will give an update of Princesswithapen's progress on Hubpages. My replies to your 4 points.

1) Great news on the payout. I truly wish that monthly payouts become a regular feature for you ver soon.

2) Superb, and congratulations again!

3) I have read through some of your part writing posts. Great going on the traffic. Unique and original content seldom fails and your hubs can be a good example.

4) Keep publishing high quality hubs and that trend will hopefull continue to rise.

Look forward to more terrific reading at http://hubpages.com/@doc-snow

Thank you for this Hub! It has helped me to understand a few things about HubPages that I did not realize before. I have had an account for 5 weeks, posted my first Hubs 11 days ago and have not been sure how this all supposed to work. Your Hub has been very encouraging for me. Thank you again!

9 months later and a ton of new hubs (very prolific and very cool). I'd love to read a follow-up and see your thoughts. Loved this hub for pointing out the things that make it feel like a community. I love it. As a stay at home mom and former freelance writer (contracted by a company), I find HP to be a great place to practice my content writing while I'm out of work and can't meet deadlines for companies. Update soon. I'm so curious! (Will start following now... I love your varied hub topics).

Thanks Dubuquedogtrainer & internetgeek. I'm glad you liked this.

Big Serious - I've been wanting to do a follow up hub. But its been 9 months already and I want a few more months to go by. So I can genuinely show writers how much passive income you can be earning in 12 months time on HubPages. Hopefully by then I can have a few more hubs under the belt and put forward eye-opening and inspirational numbers for everyone to see. I will update you via a comment on this hub when I do get around to writing it. Thanks heaps for stopping by and I'm really glad you found the hubs at Princesswithapen worth following.

Hi there. I see you are still getting a lot of response from this hub...Great!! I have yet to make any money on hubs...I believe it is because I've been inconsistent because of caring for my aging and frail mother. Believe me, she takes a lot of my time and energy. I suppose I wouldn't have it any other way.

The only way to make dollars and not cents on adsense is getting thousands of hits per day on a hub and that does not include fellow hubbers, I mean organic search engine traffic. For the average hubber who probably has no idea about SEO that is impossible, especially when no single hub can actually do that, you need lots of them all SEO'd to get that sort of traffic. It's just ever so unlikely, so being realistic gradually working towards a target of $100 over a period of months, is the best way to avoid disappointment.

Voted up and interesting! And following...

I'm looking forward to read your 1 year anniversary hub as a follow up to this one. I hope things have picked up since you first erote this hub (I'm assuming they have, since you're still here).

Aloha and keep on hubbin'

Although it is old hub & I am 2 years here, I went through this hub & I like it. It is a nice way to encourage the beginners.

I am happy for the success you have been achieving here.

By the way, do you have an updated hub for same topic.

Thanks for sharing.
