Introduction on Adding a Hubpages Tracker to Your Hubpages RSS Feed

I own a few websites outside of Hubpages, and have often wanted to use my Hubpages RSS feed on them. I also have several automatic updating sites such as Tumblr which automatically use an RSS feed to post links to my site updates Including Hubpages.

As most of you will know, Hubpages comes with a fantastic referral program which allows you to gain 10% of hubpages 40% cut of your referrals hubs ad impressions. Unfortunately, your Hubpages tracker which manages these referrals is not included in the RSS feed, this is especially annoying if, like me, you want to put the Hubpages RSS feed on to the same sites in which you post your Hubpages tracker ID's.

Fortunately I have found a particularly ingenious work around which I will share with my fellow hubbers here to day, which will allow you to add a Hubpages tracker to your Hubpages RSS Feed.

The Easy Way to Add Your Hubpages Tracker to Your Hubpages RSS Feed

  1. Make sure you have a Yahoo Account
  2. Go to http://pipes.yahoo.com
  3. Click 'Create a Pipe'
  4. On the left hand side you will see some buttons, drag and drop 'Fetch Feed' in to the top left of the workspace.
  5. Enter your Feed URL
  6. On the left hand side click Operators, and drag the box Regex in to the middle of the workspace.
  7. At the bottom of your fetch feed box there is a dot. drag this to the same dot on your Regex box.
  8. Do the same with your Pipe Output Box, linking it to the bottom.
  9. In the Regex box you will need to make the following changes
  • In the 'Link' box change it to 'item:link'
  • in the 'Replace' box type '/hub/'
  • in the 'With' box type '/xxxxxxx/hub/' Replacing the x's with your own tracker ID (Make sure you include the '_' , for instance my tracker is '_bonus100'

Once you have followed these simple steps on how to add your Hubpages tracker to your Hubpages RSS feed you simply have to click save, and then 'Run Pipe' this will take you to an example of your feed, and show you your new feed address which will include your tracker ID.

This new feed URL can be used with everything from Feedburner to Tumblr.

Glad people are finding it useful, took me a while to figure this one out!

Definately a good way to help hubbers earn more referals though :)

I'm giving it a try. It actually worked. Only lists ten hubs. Is there a way to modify to get all the hubs listed? Please explain the part about the Hub Tracker showing up a little more. I use the RSS feed that is provided through hubpages on my other websites. Thank you. Wishing you the best on your journey to Texas. P.S. Rate thumbs up!

The ten Hub limitation is set by Hubpages, I ahve had a quick look around but can't really find anywhere to change this!

If you click publish in your my pipes section I can take a look at it for you, you shoul be able to get a link for it!

It sounds like it cannot find your RSS feed though, I think it should be

http://hubpages.com/author/chinweike/latest/?rss

No easier way to do it in HubPages itself? Couldn't you simply click the RSS button in the browser and then insert your _Tracker and use that as your rss feed link?

And I can't get anything to display with my RSS feed when I use pipes. I followed all the instructions but nothing shows up.

Unfortunately not. If you make your tracker public send me teh link and i will take a look at it for you!

Oli, I tried the idea of using Tumblr to take my HubPages RSS feed then re-tweet to Twitter. However I've found it tweets any posts I do directly, but it ignores anything imported by RSS. Did I set it up wrong or did I misunderstand what you did?

thisisoli profile image

I actually don't use twitter as a marketing tool, I tend to stick with things such as feedburner to create mailing lists and the like since I can give a proper title and description to draw in people who subscribe to me.

This is probably my loss, but I can't help but think it's another fad!

I am guessing that the lack of automated tweeting on RSS feeds is either to stop spam, or to prevent loops (People having a twitter RSS Feed appear on Tumblr and then re-tweeting to the same twitter account etc.

That is just a guess however, I will take a look at it soon however I am currently balls deep in immigration paperwork!

What is the actual link? Is it the pipes.yahoo link?

thisisoli profile image

thisisoli 6 years ago from Austin, Texas (From York, England!) Author

When you press save it should give you a link, which i think is something along the lines of pipes.yahoo.com/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I cant remember exactly though!

Yahoo pipes is always tricky. I saw a service doing around 7000 feeds but these type of backlinks carry no huge value right, or is that misinformation ?

thisisoli profile image

thisisoli 6 years ago from Austin, Texas (From York, England!) Author

Most RSS feeds carry little backlinking value due to the way they are parsed by websites. Yahoo pipes is no different to any other RSS feed however, since it still displays the link on to a webpage.

Using a tracker in a link will dilute the PR value a little, but this is more than compensated by the extra 10% of ad impressions, and the chance you may sign someone up!

Wonder if this thread is still read... but anyway, going by a fellow above who has the feed http://hubpages.com/author/chinweike/latest/?rss ,has anyone simply added the url tracker to that rss link so http://hubpages.com/author/chinweike/latest/?rss... is the feed with the tracker. i tried, seems to be accepted , just dont know if it produces rss feeds that include the tracker.

If it works let me know, it might be a great way to simplify this :)

Oli, I am having a problem trying to follow the above. The error comes out as this: warning Error fetching site feed from http://theblagsmith.hubpages.com/hubs/latest?rss: No link discovered in response.

What could I possibly be doing wrong, or is it the new site changes which makes this approach now difficult?

Hello thisisoli, I tried but the result is " No link discovered in response". I think something is wrong in your explanation, please have a look into it, thanks.

This is such a smart idea and the first article I found that explains it so clearly. Thanks, maybe not I can actually get my pipes to work.
