How to Leave Engaging and Insightful Comments

Hopping Hubs

Hopping Hubs

I try to read atleast 5-10 hubs per day. It is kind of hard because I write so prolifically but I feel like I will get back what I give in this community so I must make a concerted effort to read other people's hubs each and everyday. Honestly there are days I fall short. I will not lie to you especially when I am writing and publishing. But the effort is there. And for anyone reading this who wishes to be successful and inspired on HubPages I suggest your read your peers work.

You have to remember that as a free lance writer you are only in competition with yourself so reading, commenting and providing feedback is the best way to improve your readership.

And committing to reading 5 hubs a day isn't that hard. I read fast so it takes me under 30 minutes. And on days I need to catch up I hop 10 hubs and that takes about an hour.

So Hop some Hubs diligently and you will see your readership improve.

Leave Insightful and Engaging Comments

This is really important. When your read someone else's hub truly take and interest. Ask questions that seem to be the next logical question. For instance I was reading about Hurricane Irene's devastation to Connecticut. I commented that I loved the pictures and they were great! I also loved the article. It was well written, organized and provided a great deal of information but then I added a follow up question asking Connecticut's assistance from FEMA. It was the next logical question since the news has widely reported the federal government is tapped out of FEMA funds entirely this year.

On my own hubs, I allow others opinions even when different then my own to be expressed. Sometimes a difference of opinion makes for great discourse as long as it is civilized. I do moderate but only when it is a clear violation of the rules. I think I have moderated twice.

So be interested in others work and appreciate others being interested in your work.

Rate

Itdoes not hurt any author to rate another author's writings. In fact, I believe if you are generous with others they will be generous with you. So rate. It is the easiest and simplest thing to do to rate articles, useful, funny, awesome, interesting etc.. And then vote up or down. It is great to leave insightful comments on others hubs but if you want people to be generous with them you will have to actually take the time out to rate their hubs as well as comment. And it is not a time issue either. It actually takes less time to rate articles then to leave insightful and engaging comments and it helps the author. There are many hubs in which I haven't left a comment but rated them anonymously. It doesn't sell your articles when you do this as you do it without receiving credit but your are contributing to the HubPages community and that is important.

+1

This is a new feature to HubPage articles but you now have the ability in addition to providing am insightful and engaging comment, rating and voting a hub up to also recommend the hub to others by simply hitting the plus one feature. I have just begun using this feature myself but I think it is a valuable tool for really getting others work out there. I think the Golden Rule exists on HubPages which is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It isn't going to harm your writing, ranking, pay or anything else if you are generous to your fellow writers on Hubpages. If anything it will help you. Writing can be a very solitary isolating experience. I would guess you would have to love solitude to be a writer but the isolation isn't necessarily good for you so by being involved hopping other hubs, commenting, providing feedback, voting up and + 1 articles you would recommend you are actively participating in the HubPages community. And if you are good to other authors they will be good to you as well.

I hop 5-10 articles a day just looking for Hub articles to rate, vote up, provide comments and +1 and I honestly believe that any success I have had at all on Hubpages is because I have followed the Golden Rule and been generous to other writers.

Great hub! I try to hop at least 5 hubs a day and I try to keep up with the people I'm following. I've met some awesome hubbers by doing so. I appreciate you mentioning the Golden Rule. It's so true. Be unselfish and just take a bit of time to give feedback and it will come back tenfold! Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure about the +1 though. I would love to share some hubs.

Hi LABrashear,

It has been a formula that has worked for me. I didn't mention it earlier but there are somedays I just go through my list of people I follow and I read all their latest publications and rate them. But those are the days I have writers block and it is a really productive way to spend a day of writer's block plus I am always inspired by people I follow. They are such wonderful people with so much talent. I am so blessed.

I am so glad I am following you and I look forward to reading more of your work. And remember you can always rate without commenting but I always like hearing from you.

Thank you for reading, commenting and providing feedback. Your comments are always appreciated.

I just found this by hopping hubs!

Yes it is important to leave comments because it helps you to grow your following. Very often when you leave a comment (assuming it is positive and/or constructive of course) the hubber will check your hubs out and you may get a new follower or the very least some more comments on your existing hubs or votes Up. All good for sure!

As "hubbers," we all leave comments. The challenge is to read the articles and leave good, thoughtful comments. The shear number of followers presents a challenge! Flag up!

Hi dallas93444,

I a not burdened with a lot of followers. I barely have over a hundred and I am grateful for everyone one of them. If I can't find anything insightful t write I just rate my peers articles. Sometimes articles are written so completely there is nothing to add.

Be that as it may, I appreciate the read, comment and rating. Your opinion is valued and appreciated.

Great advice! I think that by hopping 20 Hubs a day, and leaving good comments will do well for me! Thanks!

Hi drspaniel,

I wish I had been as wise as you and started out hopping 20 hubs a day. I started writing first and then hopping hubs later. I was up to 10 day but then I back down to 5 a day when I am on a writing streak.

Thanks for reading, commenting and providing feedback.

Thank you for sharing this insightful information. I try to visit at least three to five hubs during the weekdays and more on the weekends. I have been learning the appropriate way to comment by reading others' comments. Also like you, I sometimes vote anonymously and then other times leave comments or vote. I always make I vote so the person has at least some feedback, either in a better score or by the feedback categories. I wish there were a few more feedback categories or different ones. Sometimes a hub doesn't hit me enough to want to comment but doesn't fit the buttons listed either. What do you do in this case? (I usually find this when hopping hubs through the "Hop Hubs" button.)

Hi Eyesstraightahead,

I too have found hubs which I either didn't feel like there was a category to rate it, an appropriate comment to leave as I try to always say something postive, or Hubs which by no fault of the writer I am not qualified to rate their hub as it was extremely technical writing.

I read those hubs and if I can't rate, I leave a comment or I am not qualified to comment then I don't but I do try to rate up just based on the writing.

This was my practice in the first 6 months. Now I skip what I don't know. I feel confident in the ability of the experts on HP to judge the experts work. But I do reccomend keep hopping hubs as it will always help your score.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

I will continue hopping, as it allows me to read the amazing work on here! Though sometimes I come across ones that interest me as much I still try to read If I have time so they have a view and feedback. Maybe in time we will get new categories.

Good Morning Eyesstraightahead,

While I would like to see categories as well, I must say I have learned alot hub hopping as it forced me to read articles I would have normally skipped.

Thanks for reading, commenting and rating!!

It is appreciated.

Hi JT, Just to clarify, by categories I mean for feedback. I agree with you about the reason it is beneficial to hop hubs. I read one this morning about slavery in cocoa fields that is not something I would normally read since everything made outside the country runs into such issues. I found the article very interesting, and I wouldn't have clicked on it if not for hopping around. Thank you again for your wonderfully written hub and for helping us newbies learn how to leave feedback, even if we don't have a lot to say (not usually my issue, but sometimes!). :)

JT thank you for this great hub. I try to hub hop every day. I read hubs more than I write and that is ok with me. There is a lot of information here on hubpages and great writers. I try to leave insightful comments but don't always make that mark.

Hi mljdgulley354,

We have been friends for a while and I think you are an excellent commentor. And you are right. There is a lot of wonderful information here on HP. I am working on another project right now so I don't have as much time currently as I have had in the past 9 months to dedicate to HP but that doesn't mean the moment I am on break from my current project I will not be back in full force. Soemtimes I love to just hop hubs as well. I love to get to know the new writers and encourage them as I was encouraged to pursue my dreams here on HP. You always make the mark with me and especially today so thank you for leaving this wonderful comment.

Cheers!!

JT
