How to Use RSS Feeds - an Idiot's Guide

Source

First, a disclaimer . . . .

First of all, the RSS feed option has been discontinued for hubs on HubPages. That use was the initial reason that I wrote this hub. I was so excited to finally--with the help of some hub friends--figure out RSS feeds!

Still, even though you won't be able to use RSS feeds on hub articles, perhaps this article will still give you a basic idea of what they are and how they work, helping you to use them on your blogs or other sites.

RSS feeds can be very helpful because they keep content fresh with updating relevant, similar hubs on a feed. I hope you'll find this hub helpful!

RSS Feeds 101 for Dummies

Dear reader, you are not the idiot, nor are you the dummy. That would be me. Months ago, when I started on HubPages, I had no idea what RSS feeds were. Over time, I began to hear some about them, so I tried to learn more. I was so clueless, though, so much that even reading everything I could find about them didn’t help. Everything went over my head. I think it took a lot of time, reading instructions from different perspectives, and someone to personally help me along.

So here we go. If you know little to nothing about RSS links and how to use them, perhaps you can learn from a dummy who only recently learned. If I can learn how to use RSS feeds (and love them!), I am sure that you can, too.

RSS feeds should link related content . . .

I tried to use RSS feeds with a formula I found somewhere that brought up my latest hubs, but the hubs weren’t related to the content of the hub I had published. That is a no-no. Any links posted on a hub should be related to the hub topic itself.

Let’s go through this now step by step.

First, when you are in edit mode on a hub, look for the RSS feed in the upper right hand box that contains various capsules that you can choose. See photo below.

See the orange symbol with "rss" to the right of it? Click on that. The RSS box will open up at the bottom of the hub and will look like this:

Basic Formula for RSS Feed URL

You need to insert a url in the line that says Feed URL. This feed will provide the capsule with fresh content as it takes newer or perhaps more popular (you will choose) hubs from your repertoire and shows them in the feed. I am giving you the basic formula to use that you will modify to your specific hub topic every time you want to use an RSS feed. Don’t lose it! This formula was given to me by another hubber writer, and I keep the link saved in a Word document to copy and paste into my hubs as needed.

Here is the basic formula, minus the name Victoria Lynn and the shopping topic:

http://www.hubpages.com/author/Victoria+Lynn/shopping/latest?rss

Make the URL specific

Now, unless you want my hubs to show up in your feed (fine with me!), you will change the author name to your own. Make sure you put a plus sign between words. Then you will change shopping to the topic you want to highlight from your own hubs. The particular link shown will bring up all my latest shopping hubs at the end of a hub about shopping. I can change the word shopping to poetry or recipes or saving money or any other topic I want to show up. With the saving money example, I will add a plus sign between “saving” and “money.”

Where the url says "latest," you can also change that to “best” or “hot” to change which hubs show up. I find it fun to play with this, inserting the different words to see which of my hubs show up. Notice that you can choose up to 8 Hubs. I usually choose three or four, perhaps fewer or more depending on how the layout of the hub looks.

"Hubs about hubs" is the tag I use on hubs that talk about hubs!
"Hubs about hubs" is the tag I use on hubs that talk about hubs!

Use consistent tags to group hubs!

Now, for this to work right, you must have added the key words in the tags when you wrote the hub. If you haven’t, go back through all your related hubs and add the same tag in all of them. I had to do that with some of my poetry, as some of them had “poem” as a tag while others had “poetry.” Add the same tag to all the hubs you want to show up under one topic.

RSS feeds give hubs fresh material--or so I thought.

I used to add other related hubs by clicking on links and adding in the url. While that works fine, it is more time consuming than using RSS feeds, and it doesn’t update with new material as additional articles in the related field are published. RSS feeds will automatically update your hub with fresh material as you write new stuff, something that Google, I hear, actually likes. I still use the links and fill in urls of other of my or other hubbers’ hubs if I want specific ones to show up. If you don’t mind which of your recipes show up on a recipe hub, using an RSS feed is the way to go! Give the capsule a title such as "More Recipes from Victoria Lynn."

I hope this explanation from this dummy has helped. I know that you can also subscribe to an RSS feed on another blog or website. I don't know how all that works, though. That would be a topic for advanced dummies. If you do know how that works, write a hub about it and maybe our hubs can hook up and complement each other.

Use the link capsule and hyperlinks instead of RSS feeds

Seriously, if something is still unclear in this idiot's guide to using RSS feeds, please let me know in the comments section, and I’ll try to explain further to make it clear. With RSS feeds discontinued on HubPages, perhaps you will use this information in some future venue. For now, stick to adding links via the link capsule and by using hyperlinks within the text of your hub to link similar hubs.

Using RSS Feeds

Do you know how to use RSS feeds?

  • Yes, I already knew how.
  • No, I didn't know how, but now I do!
  • I am still clueless and need more information.

Spectacular Victoria - I have been tacking on a feed of one of my "other" blogs to all of my hubs, but had no idea that I could feed my related hubs into my new hubs too - thanks for the info!

I use the RSS feed but my problem, I jump around so much with my hubs that sometimes I just don't have anything that will match up with the subject I'm writting about. No problem with recipes always have something to match there. Voted Up.

This is is a clear and helpful presentation on how to create RSS feeds and how to get them to work. I need to beef up my blog, so I can create links back and forth between my blog and my hub.

This has explained RSS feeds very well. I didn't know what they were or how to use them either. I am going to go back and update my hubs today! Thank you so much for such a easy to understand explaination! You did a great job! Voted up and useful! Have a wonderful day! :)

O.K. I did this and now my hub is about "everything you ever wanted to know about Victoria Lynn" Obviously, one of us got something terribly wrong or maybe, a well devised plan? Anyway, it appears I am now working for you. BTW, have we discussed renumeration?

Victoria....I must disagree with you. This Hub IS for ME....a real techno-DUMMY!! Oh Lord....although you did an impeccable job at instructing.....can you see me scratching my old head?? Wow. I KNOW it's a fairly easy process and I'm grateful you wrote this, but I'll be reading it over and over and ov......well, you get the picture.

If something has more than 2 steps....I'm a jumbled wreck! Remember the hub I wrote admitting to being "directionally dysfunctional?" Well, my friend....that applies to ANY directions...not just behind the wheel. I've always told people...."Talk to me like I'm three years old" My husband obliges me & we both end up laughing so hard, I've not heard a word he said!!.........great hub as always, Vitoria!

Thanks for the input, marwan. I couldn't think of anymore images. It's really that simple, just the rss feed box itself. Nothing else appears that I can think of. If I think of anything else, though, I can add it. Thanks!

moonlake--Yes, not writing about similar topics can be a detriment to using rss feeds. As you write more, though, perhaps some of them can be grouped together. I have more and more that go together as time goes on. Thanks for reading!

Victoria,

This is great! I am going to link to this from my new best hub, "How to make money blogging and writing online." http://hubpages.com/t/30662c

I have been improving my hubs using a rule I learned in cross country: for every 2 hours you spend running, invest 1 hour learning. Now, I am reading, reading, reading about how to write... It has been visibly producing traffic and revenue. Best to you & your readers!

Cool. I didn't know how to use the capsule for hubs as you describe above, but will try it now. I gather it's the tags the feed looks for, not the group name?

Did you know that Hubpages gives you RSS html code you can insert into your own website elsewhere? I have two monikers in HP, one of which I use to write professional hubs with. On my website I've added the RSS feed for that one, so my website automatically shows all the latest professional hubs I've written.

All my best,

A great hub, Vicki

I added Ruchira/life/RSS and nothing happened.

advise pls. thanks!

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Ruchira--Yes, put your name where mine is and put the tag you want in place of my shopping topic, but don't alter anything else. You can change latest to best, but don't get rid of any of the slashes or the question mark. You must leave the symbols in the formula EXACTLY as they are. Only replace the author's name and the topic. Make sense? Try it and let me know.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Hi, Angela! RSS feeds gives your readers other related articles to look at. You could add the links yourself by copying and pasting them in the links capsule, but the RSS feed does that for you, changing them as you write more! Your "best" or "latest" hubs (whichever you choose in the formula) will continue to show up as things change. Plus, search engines like Google like fresh and changing content; the RSS feeds will help with that by updating the hubs that are listed. Make sense?

Just want to ask you how many hubs would be ideal to include in the RSS capsule?

Thanks again.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

HI, rajan! So glad you figured out the RSS capsule. I usually include 3 in the capsule. If it's a longer hub, I might do 4 or 5 if they would be really helpful ones. On shorter hubs, I don't put as many. I don't want to overwhelm the reader, but sometimes more might be appropriate if it's a topic that a lot of people are interested in. They might want to see a lot of the related hubs and have some to choose from. Good luck!

Victoria. I've spent 4 months here on HubPages wondering what the heck rss feeds were and then trying to get it to work, unsuccessfully that is. Until you came along and saved me. I am happy to report that I am now an rss feed machine and am in the process of adding them to all of my old Hubs. Can't thank you enough for making this so simple. Just another reason why HubPages is so wonderful, everyone is willing to educate and help. Thanks a million.

bdegiulio--You have no idea how good that makes me feel! I thought since I FINALLY figured it out that I should share it with others--simply! I'm so glad it came across as easy to understand. Awesome. Thanks for your feedback. I became an RSS feed machine, too. Love them! Thanks so much!

Great hub, but I am sure enough an idiot!!! Ha. I tried the formula and it said improper whatever. I believe I may have figured it out now. Do you have to have author/Faith-+Reaper or just your name without doing the author/? I am sorry! Also, is the topic, i.e., shopping, does it have to been where your hubs are placed under favorite topics? Duh. I will keep at it, and maybe there is a hub for extra dummies. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Faith Reaper profile image

Faith Reaper 4 years ago from southern USA

I figured it out! Ha. It was the author/Faith+Reaper thing, as I was not typing the author part. Thank you so much for this hub. You are awesome. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Faith Reaper--I would do the author just how it was in the example I gave, and see if that works. Whatever topic you use will pull together hubs that are tagged with that. So if you have hubs on "faith" for instance, go through and make sure you have "faith" in all the tags in edit mode. Make sense? I know this can be confusing.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Oh, Faith Reaper--just saw this second post. Glad you figured it out! Awesome!

Faith Reaper profile image

Faith Reaper 4 years ago from southern USA

Victoria, I have just one more question - if the hub you are wanting to place RSS feeds on, keeps popping up no matter what you pick, i.e., best, latest, etc., is there a way to delete just that one hub, as you wouldn't want it to be posted on the hub you are posting the feeds on? I figured out how to narrow it down, but if it pops up as the first one on the list, I cannot figure out how to remove it from the list. Thanks a lot for the info. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Faith Reaper--There might be an easier way than what I know, but here's what I know: That happened to me, too, so I went back to my tags and deleted the tag that put that hub in that certain croup. It took a few hours or maybe a day, but after a little while that hub didn't show up anymore. That's all I know to tell you. Hope it helps.

Faith Reaper profile image

Faith Reaper 4 years ago from southern USA

Thanks so much Victoria - I did add tags on some others and it worked out, but I will try to remove a tag from that particular hub. I appreciate you very much. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Hi Victoria Lynn: I just read this hub and I have a few questions...and maybe some I don't know how to ask....First of all how is this different if I just add links of my own. How do I change the the hubs. Can I put this rss icon on my blog or anywhere else? I am still a bit confused. I followed your formula and got the right url. It took me a while but I did get that. I hope my questions are not too dumb. I will read once more. Thanks so much for patience ...

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Hi, Carol. Let's see what this dummy can answer. LOL. Sure you can add links, but using an RSS feed is different because it will update the links automatically when you write a new hub in that category. So the material is always fresh and up to date. And yes, you can put RSS feeds on your blog or other places, but I haven't tried that yet, so I can't give you specific instructions. You might just play around with the feed link on your profile or look for another hub on the topic. Sorry I couldn't answer more completely about that.

Does that help at all? :-)

carol7777 profile image

carol7777 4 years ago from Arizona

yes and thanks so much. One thing I noticed is that it will add a link to the hub I am linking other links to. I think you did a great job in explaining and after fooling around a bit figured out. ANd I will tell you if you can get me to understand some of this stuff you are dubbed a genius. Thanks again Victoria Lynn!!!!!!!

This is the second time I have come back to this hub and used it as a resource. It's an excellent explanation. One question--is it too redundant if the RSS feed features the same two hubs that are featured at the bottom of the hubs due to what "Group" they are in? Not sure how to get around this.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

LauraGSpeaks--I've been noticing that, too, that the RSS feed sometimes repeats the featured hubs at the bottom. I have stopped using RSS feeds as much, particularly on those hubs where I know some good hubs will come up in the groupings. Another way--you can change what shows up as featured at the bottom by going to your groups on your account page and moving the titles around to change the order. At least, then, you won't be repetitive. I'm trying to be more careful about that, because I don't think that's a good thing.Still, I think RSS feeds are helpful at times and a way to keep content updated.

I'm glad you can use this as a resource. That makes me feel good. Thanks!

radiantwriting 4 years ago

THANK YOU!!! I have spent hours today trying to figure out this RSS thing - reading one article after another - I finally "GOT IT" after reading this!!! Now can you write about Sitemaps????? And how on earth do I use these - Delorie.htm or delorie.gif?

Thanks to this hub, I am finally able to place RSS feeds in my hubs!

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiantwriting--You are so welcome! I'm so glad this helped you. I figured since I FINALLY figured it out, I should share it as simply as I could with others. So glad it helps! I don't know about Sitemaps, but maybe one day....LOL!

radiantwriting 4 years ago

If you get the sitemap thing - PLEASE write a Hub on it and send me the link!! I spent the better part of last night trying to figure it out on my Google account and couldn't get it!!!

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiantwriting--Sure! I'm got to educate this dummy (myself!) on what sitemaps are, first! :-)

radiantwriting 4 years ago

ha ha - well, if your the dummy, then I'm the Idiot!!! I was finally able to understand the RSS feed by reading your article - so I will wait patiently for your new EASY TO UNDERSTAND hub on Sitemaps!!!!

I think you have found your niche - educating the hard to educate!!! Thanks again

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiant--yeah, I'm the dummy. :-) If I understand myself the Sitemaps, I'll surely write a hub about them. I think I'm good at educating the hard to educate b/c I feel I'm one of those who need things to be explained simply. Once I get it, I feel I can explain it. Where would you suggest I go to learn about sitemaps? :-)

radiantwriting 4 years ago

I googled "How to add Sitemaps" and there is a tutorial on the Google Analytics Account page - but it might as well be written in french - I can't figure any of it out!!!

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiant--I'll check out what they say on Sitemaps, but I probably won't understand it either. Hey, re: RSS feeds--did you hear or read that HubPages is phasing them out? So we'll have to remove them from our hubs, or HP will in February. I guess learning how to do them wasn't for nothing, but . . . bummer.

radiantwriting 3 years ago

That makes my brain hurt!!! After all that research!!! Last night I post a hub and there were no "Tag" options - this happened before about a year ago, not sure what's up with that. Have you ever had a hub that ran at a high score with a lot of traffic for three years and then for no reason fell from 95-100 to 85 and the traffic slowed down quite a bit????

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiant--You might read up on the HubPages blog about this stuff. There are no more tags, but HP is putting them in automatically, it seems. We'll see how that goes.

I don't know about your traffic falling like that, as I have been here only a bit over a year. Maybe it will pick back up. :-)

radiantwriting 3 years ago

Victoria - Thanks for all your help!!!

Seems I placed a Widget in my blog - when I removed it, that helped alot. Guess I need to read up that too! Thanks again!

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

You're welcome, radiant! I need to learn more about Widgets! But you say it helped NOT to have a widget? :-)

radiantwriting 3 years ago

That is all that I can think of - the only thing that I changed on this hub, other than the rss feed, but i added that all of my hubs and they are doing about the same. This one dropped for the first time below 96 to 85 - as soon as I took the widget off, it jumped almost instantly to 87 and is now at 88 and holding (same day) - I googled it and it is still on page one.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

radiant--That's great that the hub is on page one of Google! I don't understand how the RSS feeds and widget affect our hubs. Oh, well. I'm glad it's doing well.

Thanks again!!

cascoly profile image

cascoly 3 years ago from seattle

unfortunately HP has removed both RSS feeds and Tags, so this very helpful hub no longer works.

a quick fix to use an rss for all your hubs is:

http://cascoly.hubpages.com/hubs/latest?rss

just replace cascoly with your hubpages name and it will generate a list of all your hubs

i've found a better overall solution and will post after i debug it

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

I know, cascoly. That really stinks. Do people use RSS feeds much elsewhere? I liked them, but I guess they were probably overused. Thanks for the comments.

cascoly profile image

cascoly 3 years ago from seattle

I use them both here and for my photography website thru wordpress.

the fix above will work until HP removes the capability in Feb. I'm working on another way to create an RSS of hubs, but it will require another website to use it

if so few people [they claim] were using it, dont see why they couldnt just leave it alone rather than breaking everyone's hubs

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 3 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

cascoly--Yeah, I wonder if few people used RSS feeds because they simply didn't know how? It took me a long time. Oh, well. Thanks for your input.
