How to be Active on HubPages to Earn More Money on HubPages

Becoming more active on HubPages helps your earnings increase

For those hubbers who are trying to increase their earnings on HubPages, they may very well be able to earn more by being more active on HubPages. Being more active on HubPages helps your profile and hubs get more traffic. Increasing traffic to your HubPages profile and hubs helps you earn more money on HubPages.

There are a number of ways that you could use to increase traffic to your hubs, like paying a little attention to Search Engine Optimization of your hubs, and with keyword and keyphrase use in your hubs, as well as linking to your hubs from other sites, but one of the easiest ways to increase traffic to your hubs is to be more active on HubPages. It may still take some time, but because it's quite fun, being more active on HubPages doesn't really seem like work (like paying attention to Search Engine Optimization and getting lots of links from other sites seems like work.)

I would suggest that in addition to being more active on HubPages that you still work on fairly often writing and adding new hubs, a little bit of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and linking to your hubs from other sites, but you may quite likely find that you can do less of this when you become more active on HubPages.

As long as I have done a little SEO and linking from other sites, and do write and add new hubs from time to time, if I can increase traffic to my hubs in a way that seems more fun to do than doing SEO or linking from other sites, I'd spend more time doing that instead, wouldn't you?

Different ways to be more active on HubPages

Exploring is fun. When trying to earn more money on HubPages by being more active, exploring can also be very important. It's easy to explore HubPages by using the "explore" tab at the top of the page.

Increase your activity on HubPages by:

commenting on other hubs;

asking and answering questions;

starting or adding to discussions in the HubPages forums

Being more active on HubPages by commenting on other hubs

Commenting on other hubs is one of the easiest ways in which to get yourself noticed (and if you are noticed more, you may have more people visiting your HubPages profile and hubs - not just other hubbers, but anybody visiting HubPages, reading that hub and its comments, and seeing your comment, which has a link to your profile in your username.)

Tips to increase your exposure when commenting on other hubs:

If you really want to stand a better chance of the author of the hub, other hubbers and any visitor to HubPages visiting your profile (and your hubs) then leave good comments on other hubs. Take time to read the entire hub, and leave a good, honest comment.

To avoid struggling to leave a good, honest comment, find hubs to read that really interest you. To find hubs that really interest you, use the "explore" tab in the navigation at the top of HubPages, and then after clicking either the "topics" or the "hubs" link, "explore" some more. On either of those pages use the "hot," "best" and "latest" tabs to find titles of hubs that interest you.

If a hubber writes many hubs on a topic or two that interests you, follow them so that you can be alerted when they add new hubs.

Visit the profiles of hubbers who leave comments on your own hubs, and on their profile find the title of a hub they've written that interests you, and go read it and comment on it. This may entice them to come and read more of your own hubs, and comment on more of your own hubs.

Do for others what you'd like done for you.

You can also increase your chance of having your comment noticed by sharing that hub to your followers. Do this by finding the "f-share" button beneath their hub - this is not just for sharing to Facebook - after you have clicked the "f-share" button you will see that there are some options for you to share the hub to different places, one of those options being to simply share the hub to your followers on HubPages.

If you're the first person to leave a comment on another hub, remember to also vote it up and indicate if you found it useful, funny, awesome, beautiful or interesting. Imagine the author of the hub sees your genuinely good and honest comment but notices that he or she doesn't yet have any numbers next to the useful, funny, awesome, beautiful or interesting options. What if that author thinks "Well, this person left a nice comment which seemed so genuine, but why didn't they also say that they found my hub interesting or useful? I wonder if it was such a genuine and honest comment afterall?"

From time to time go back to hubs that you have already commented on. The hub author may have left a comment asking you a question, and what will people think if you don't answer it? Answering the question shows that you have come back to the hub and that you are an active person on HubPages - perhaps gaining you a few more followers and a few more visits to your own hubs. When going back to hubs from time to time, you may also notice an interesting comment of another hubber. If their comment interests you, go and visit their profile to see if they have hubs that interest you. You may also want to follow them, and leave a nice fan mail comment.

Being more active on HubPages by asking and answering questions

Increase your exposure by giving the link to your HubPages profile more exposure. Increase exposure of your HubPages profile link by asking and answering questions.

Increase your chances of more people being eager to answer your questions by going back to those questions and voting up the answers you like. People enjoy their good answers getting voted up, so they may want to answer all your questions if you bother to vote up the good answers your questions get.

Leaving good answers to questions other hubbers ask intrigues other hubbers visiting that same question, and they may visit your profile to find out more about you, and to read your hubs.

Again, use the "explore" tab at the top of the page, but this time to find the link to "answers." After clicking it, choose to answer hot, latest, best or unanswered questions. You could also use the "Question Topics" section on the right hand side of the page to choose to read and answer only questions in a topic category that you enjoy, or that you know a lot about.

Above the "Question Topics" section find the place you can use to ask your own questions.

Read, participate in the discussions of, and use the HubPages forums

Again, use the "explore" tab at the top of the page, but this time to find the "forums" section of HubPages.

Give your HubPages profile link more exposure by starting a discussion in a forum category, by leaving your comment on a discussion that somebody else started, and by replying to individual replies to that discussion.

Regularly re-visit those forum discussions you've taken part in, to see if there are any new comments that you could leave a genuine and honest reply to.

Improve your HubPages profile

The methods described to increase your exposure means that it is likely your Hubpages profile will be visited more. So when hubbers (or anybody visiting the site) sees your profile, there should be something there that intrigues them about you, and doesn't chase them away.

Work on improving your HubPages profile by looking at what other hubbers say on their own profiles. Never copy the exact wording of another hubber's profile for your own HubPages profile, but get ideas on how you could improve your own profile. Get those ideas especially from the profiles that you really like. If there's anything on another hubber's profile that you don't like, even if it's simple spelling, typing or grammar mistakes, be sure to avoid those same things on your own profile.

Routine helps

It may seem that there is quite a lot to do to be active on HubPages, and perhaps there is (which is a good thing,) but to avoid feeling overwhelmed why not start a routine?

Here is an example of a 10-step routine that may help:

  1. Write and add a new hub (this is the only step in this example of a routine that you should allow yourself to skip from time to time);
  2. Reply to any comments your hubs have gotten since you last logged in;
  3. Go read and comment on the hubs of at least 3 other hubbers, making use of the tips described in "Being more active on HubPages by commenting on other hubs";
  4. Share the hub of at least one other hubber to your followers;
  5. Follow at least one hubber;
  6. Ask at least one question;
  7. Answer at least three questions;
  8. Start a new forum discussion or at least add your comment to at least two forum discussions;
  9. Check back on older activities: see if the hub author of a hub you've commented on has left a comment aimed just at you and has perhaps asked you a question, see if any answers your questions have received need voting up, or leave replies to new comments on forum threads you've participated in;
  10. Repeat.

I completely agree! It is all time-consuming but I guess it depends on what someone wants from HubPages! I love being a part of the community and reading comments and then responding. I love reading other hubs and leaving meaningful comments. I have met some wonderful people on HubPages ( including you ) and those friendships are important to me.

I have also found that updating my own hubs makes a big difference. I have seen traffic on old hubs increase dramatically simply by adding new photos or links or by re-writing a paragraph. I do that almost daily now with one or two of my old hubs.

Great hub my friend!

@jamiew12310 - thanks, I'm pleased you have found the tips useful - good luck on HubPages - tip: include a tracker referral link in the link on your profile where you invite others to also join HubPages.

jamiew12310 profile image

jamiew12310 4 years ago

A tracker referral is just a link to the signup page isn't it?

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@chef stella - SEO can be a pretty huge topic - but basically it's a method people use to make what they write online get found more easily when people search for information on the Internet - the main aim is to try and get page 1 natural (organic; not paid for) search results (a search result being a title, description and link to a website page) when somebody looking for information on the Internet uses certain words in their search phrase.

Welcome to HubPages, by the way! Because SEO can be quite a huge topic, and sometimes takes a lot of time and effort to master, I would suggest first start out getting used to HubPages, and become active on HubPages - simply being active on HubPages will get you finding many really excellent hubs that explain SEO in detail.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@jamiew12310 - no - you need to insert a unique referral tracker code into that link so that if somebody joins HubPages after clicking the link on your profile, you can earn a bit from the hubs they add to HubPages. Go to your "my account" then to "earnings" then to "referral trackers" and then "create a new tracker."

Then go back to the link you first used, click it so that you land on the page, go to the very bottom of the entire page you're on to find the "link to this page" option - click it and create a link with your referral tracker in it, and then edit your profile to have that link instead of the one you currently have.

Great tips Teresa! I wish I had more time to follow your step by step, but it's so hard when you're working a regular job nearly fifty hours a week. @ luisj305 - thanks, yes I think being more active on HubPages would really help those who don't have many hubs or pageviews - it's probably quite possible to make a decent income on HubPages with not too many hubs - as long as one keeps working hard at being active on HubPages - Although I would recommend that people do a bit of both: add new hubs as well as be active.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@ diogenes - thank you - yes, a lot of being a member on HubPages is about fun, and it's great that having fun can help increase your earnings! By your "adding a bit here and there" I'm not sure if you mean being active here and there whenever one gets a chance to, or if you mean adding a bit of one's own methods (that I may have skipped) of increasing traffic by being more active on HubPages. Either way, yes, let's all do more of it! Being active on HubPages works both ways: when somebody is trying to be more active on HubPages they are not only gaining more exposure for themselves, but for other people too.

@Majadez - thanks - good for you that you are trying to be active - i think to try remember to do the things more regulalry it may help to stick up something similar to my 10-step routine near to where you most often work on your computer - I think it would help me, so I need to do that too!

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@kelleyward - thanks, yes, sharing others work is what we'd like done for ourselves too - hubbers may be tempted to stop sharing other writers hubs if they never have their own work shared in return. The more one does for other people, the greater ones own rewards can be. Although people should just help others in return for nothing, many people do get despondent when the help they give goes unrewarded - HubPages is the perfect place to be easily rewarded for helping others. The more one helps others on HubPages, the more automatically they are more rewarded themselves. Also, its good to remember that you can also often include your referral tracker when linking to other writer's hubs.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@ creamsoda - I like it too, thanks! I only thought it out as I wrote it, and do think I need to also take that portion of this hub, print it out and stick it on my wall near my computer so that I can always easily refer to it and remember to be more active on HubPages, by following the steps in it.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@ one2get2no - thanks and good for you - I've very recently moved from being a level 3 commentor to being a level 4 commentor, and I hope it's not too long to reach my next goal, level 5. I think some people look at the commenting level of hub writers and are more likey to go vist their hubs and comment on them in the hope that that hub author will come and visit and comment on one of their hubs too (because their high commentor level sort of indicates that that hub author does that sort of thing.) I find it interesting and amazing (and appreciate) that the more one is active on HubPages, the better things turn out for that person. Comment more on other hubs to get your own commentor level up, and if you have a higher commentor level, receive more pageviews and comments on your own hubs!

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@ Peggy W - thanks, and oh dear, still learning? I am too, and was a little concerned about that, after having been on HubPages for 21 months, and you've been here for 3 years - but I also think that continuing to learn or find things one wants to learn more about is a good thing - one can never learn enough, and it's good to want to continue learning - during the process of exploring HubPages and learning more about one HubPages, often through asking questions or learning something from a comment somebody leaves on your hub, (and responding to answers and comments) one is ultimately BEING MORE ACTIVE ON HUBPAGES, so keep learning! Thanks for sharing and I hope the newbie found this hub useful too.

@ ziyena - thanks, and yes, HubPages is highly addictive - it's definitely hard to find time to work at HubPages if you have a fulltime job or other work or family commitments that keep you from spending time on it, but just hang in there, and keep working at it (if you're trying to earn extra income on HubPages) - otherwise, just keep enjoying sharing your writings and enjoying the wonderful community of HubPages.

@ Yolantha - welcome to HubPages and I love your "oh my" - I have one of my own for you - Oh my, I'm really feeling honoured that my article was the first one you explored after signing up for HubPages, and that you found it useful. It's so good to read that you sound excited too, and that you are looking forward to the ride - that's just the right attitude to have when starting out at HubPages - it will help lift your spirits through times that you may find difficult on HubPages. Take your time exploring HubPages, learning everything there is to know about HubPages, don't give up, and you'll be fine. The commentor levels are an indication of how many comments you leave or of how good a commentor you are - not sure of exactly what needs to be done to reach each new level - other than obviously do a good job of leaving good comments, frequently - and from your comment here, it would seem that you are off to a good start. @prasetio30 - thanks, glad you see this hub as a reminder (I often need reminders myself!) - I think many people mean to be more active, but then just forget about it - hopefully many will create a routine list for themselves (a bit like my 10-step one in this hub) and will place it where it can often serve as a reminder to them to be more active on HubPages - even behind the loo door may be a good spot!

@ iefox5 - thanks, glad you think that my hub has important factors in it when it comes to being more active on HubPages - I just hope many people use the points and as a united HubPages family front, we can all start being more active on HubPages and start earning more on HubPages too.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

A further tip to help with activity on HubPages: It took me a while responding to all these comments so far, but I loved doing it and I hope that my replies were helpful to many - to make it easier to respond to a lot of comments, I opened up notepad and typed all my replies there first, keeping the notepad screen small so that I could also see the comments on my hub at the same time (instead of having to scroll up and down here to see what people said while I'm actually replying further down) and then I could just copy and paste my replies here. This proves helpful if you've received quite a few comments (that you'd like to reply to) since you last logged into HubPages.

Now, next step in the routine for me (once I've gotten some other work done) is to visit many of these commentor's profiles, and to find a hub they've written that I can go and read and comment on. They commented on my hub, and I'd like to return the favour - I'M BEING ACTIVE ON HUBPAGES.

What do the green numbers mean after a persons name and profile picture. Yours has 87 after your name on this article and 97 on your profile picture on the upper right hand corner.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

Hi Yolanthe and welcome to HubPages! The green number is the score of the hub (article) and the number next to my photo is my author profile score. Both these numbers fluctuate up and down for a variety of different reasons - it's not always clear why, but seems to relate to activity on the site (as an author) or the popularity of the articles - not necessarily how many comments or pageviews either - although it's nice when they're high, I try to mostly ignore them and just concentrate on being active on the site (which seems to keep these scores up.) Look for similar questions asked in the questions and asnwers section - there's actually loads you can learn in the questions and answers section - just go to the top right of the page, find the "explore" tab there, hover your cursor over it and find the "answers" tab. You can also use the search bar. Take your time learning about the site and finding your way around, and it all soon becomes much easier to use, understand and enjoy HubPages :)

Good morning, Teresa Schultz! I like your very easy to read, conversational style. I, too, would rather spend more time communicating and connecting with my fellow Hubbers than doing the SEO thing...but I guess it's like eating one's vegetables as well as dessert...balance is key! Voted up, interesting, awesome, and useful!

Hi dxnworks - Good Evening from South Africa :)

A few tips on SEO:

Enjoy what you write, but try include some words that you know people are really using when they look for information on the Internet.

Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to see how many people are using certain search phrases on Google each month - and include those words in your titles, and a repeat them a few times in your articles.

Write fairly lengthy articles - try aim for at least 400 words.

Watch your spelling and typos - if you're trying to target a few phrases and words, they should have correct spelling.

These are just a few practical tips on SEO but I hope they help.

Hi Teresa, its nice to get such a cream of a lengthy FAQ in short. All these are worth keeping in mind, when you work on every stage of a hub. All your hubs are really informative. I should go thru all your hubs before i go the FAQ of that topic. Thank you once again to find time to for me, I think you are my teacher on hub ... :) Thanks for helping me give these very simple but important tip, tkcare.

You're welcome, dxnworks - be warned, though, the tips may seem simple, but really getting into the guts of SEO takes quite a bit of learning and work - if you're determined to understand and use SEO as best you can though, it's usually worth the effort you put in.

Ture Teresa, Its a job that needs most patience to get on track for incomes.. Im really happy that all your tips are worth reading again and again..

Hi naimishika - Thanks, and I'm not clear on what you mean by linking your HubPages to other sites, or how that would earn you more money. If you are interested in getting links onto other sites that when clicked lead to your HubPages profile or any particular hub, that's called getting backlinks - and lots of those, of good quality, can help bring your hubs some more traffic - and with more traffic, more earnings usually come too. You recently commented on a hub about backlinks written by Marisa Wright - that's a good hub to teach you more about backlinks.

Great advice! I think putting this on the web it would be an advantage to you to earn more money by ecourageing more people to sign up for hub pages (you get paid for this according to Kristiwrites her article link is shared in hubber altert). I have yet to do this myself but it is on my list to do.

This has been shared on facebook, google+, twitter, stumble upon, reddit!

@ DrMark1961 - well, then, welcome to HubPages - and thanks for the comment!

@ Angela - thanks for the shares - yes, it's quite easy to make a referral tracker so I hope it gets ticked off your "to do" list soon:

Go to your "my account"

Then, in the horizontal tabs, click "earnings"

Then, down the left hand side, click "referral trackers."

Make a unique referral tracker for yourself

Type in a tracking token you would like to use;

and in the description area, just type in something to identify your tracker to yourself, eg "general purpose link"

Then, when you want to link to a hub from another site (anybody's hub), while logged in on HubPages, go to the bottom of the page that the hub is on, right at the bottom of your screen, and see the "link to this page" tab/wording - click that, and from the drop down selectins of default tracker and your own unique one, select your own unique one, copy it, and paste it on the site you are linking from - eg FaceBook, your own site, etc

I've had 55 people sign up to join HubPages, so far, having used my referral link on another site to get to this site.

Thank you for the great tips! I've been on HupPages for far too long without getting involved or putting much effort into it. Just when I promised myself I'd put more time into what I love doing, I find this wonderfully useful hub to help me get started! Voted up, interesting, and useful!

Great hub Teresa Schultz, i find the power of commenting very useful here on hubpages. Not only does it enhance a hubber's presence but it is also an avenue of interacting with other hubbers and to know what improvement you can make to write more better articles. Voted up, useful and shared.

Basically the message I get here is it comes down to being social. Some days I feel more social than other days. Once you get used to the new way of being social on the computer versus being social on the phone or in person, it starts to feel natural..I think in about 2 years I will feel more comfortable doing this than meeting in person for coffee.

Thanks for the comments and votes rfmoran and dwachira, and for the share, dwachira.

Yes, Doodlehead, it's pretty much about being more social, and luckily HubPages is one of the easiest places to be more social - the community on HubPages is quite something else, quite unique. I agree that "meeting" people online (especially on HubPages) is soon going to be one of the best ways to "have a cup of coffee" with a friend.

Teresa Schultz--Well then, I'd better figure out what that little peephole is at the top of my computer lid, if I want to have "online coffee" because I think it might be the webcam, but I've no idea how to use it!

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz 4 years ago from East London, in South Africa Author

@ Doodlehead - lol, just don't spill your coffee on it! We only started using a webcam late last year to communicate with a client in another country, and we still don't know all the ins and outs of it - other than that you use it with Skype.
