Hubpages New Changes In Comment Sections and YouTube Uploads

Changes To Hubpages Comment Feature

The Hubpages administration continues to expand the capabilities for the authors to manage their blogs. In this tutorial readers will take a closer look at the comment section.

  • When leaving a comment at the end of an author's blog you will see your profile avatar, your name and now an additional identifier. This black rectangle contains a rating scale of how much you participate in the commenting areas of Hubpages. I'm not sure exactly the titles for these ratings and how they are determined, but this seems to be a new way of encouraging people to post more comments. It reminds me of KLOUT.
  • The official announcement, made in May 2011 [wondering why it took me so long to notice] explains that the more insightful the higher level rating. This is super because it means that instead of grading on the typical "great hub" or "thanks" as a comment, the content of the comment really exemplifies whether someone actually read and comprehended the blog. Plus, whether they had something of value to add so that other people might want to read their comment, as well.

On Your Profile Page -- BADGES

Hover over any one of the badges on your profile page to discover what it means.
Hover over any one of the badges on your profile page to discover what it means.

When commenting on your own Hubpages article in response to others who comment you will see a little green rectangle that states you are the HUB AUTHOR, just so you don't get confused.

It is highly recommended that you do leave a follow-up comment because the people 'following' the hub would likely want a response to confirm their comment was accepted and read.

View All Comment Management At Once

The second thing I noticed was the box pop-up that shows an aerial type view of your hub management tools. This is called the "Global Comment Capsule Settings" and you can determine in one click whether you would like to disable commenting on hubs, approve comments before they appear, enable only Hubber members to post comments, and show the most recent comments first.

The three columns Yes, No and Configure per Hub means that you can select to do this globally across all hubs or select individually to make these choices.

I would be interested to know what people choose to do? I would be most interested in the choice to disable further comments from being posted across all of your hubs. Why would someone do this?

When you make this selection you will have the options at the Comment section below each Hubpages written as shown below.

A comment tab tells you the benefit of keeping the COMMENT capsule on your Hupbages. Although, you do have the option to remove it using the "Don't display"

One more selection you may have overlooked concerns the number of comments you will enable on each Hubpage. I'm not sure why a person would select at of these values. Please post your comments and answers about this feature below in the comment section.

BONUS TUTORIAL INFORMATION

Since I'm on a roll, thought you might like to review your options when posting a POLL on your Hubpages. Take a look at image below.

  • You can now CLOSE the Voting on a poll at any time.
  • Stop showing a capsule [which you can do for any capsule]
  • Remember, if you change any questions in a POLL that has already started you will lose any votes tallied.

BIG HUBPAGES TIP FOR AUTHORS

Hubpages has instituted many new features to keep the articles within requirements, no violations, pop-ups or unacceptable affiliate links. If you are receiving numerous email messages to repair your Hubpages articles, please check out the MODERATION HELP BLOG on VIOLATION LINKS

YouTube Uploads

  • If You Enjoy Hubpages You may want to Join Now.

Most recently I have notice that a good portion of the YouTube videos no longer play on the Hubpages website. I imagine there is a monetary and copyright explanation.

What Do You Do?

If your Video Selection is no longer playing on Hubpages:

  • I remove it
  • I remove it and select another video to put in its place
  • I leave it and let readers click over to YouTube to watch it

Question for Hubpages Experts

When posting YouTube videos, is it possible not to have all related videos show after the one selected video plays here on Hubpages? Please provide instructions in the comment section if you do know how to configure that only one video plays.

I was wondering about why some videos did not work but did not realize it was a site-wide problem. I have just deleting that capsule but I hope it doesn't happen too often. Great useful hub, by the way!

Hello Prairie - I think many of the videos will no longer be available due to adsense and advertising conflicts between Google/YouTube and other websites. The authors of those videos have commercial contracts with YouTube and when the ads play and people click it probably does not work properly on competitive websites, like Hupbages. That is just a guess what is happening. Thanks for rating up, clicking INTERESTING and commenting. It means a lot. Blessings, Debby P.S. I see you are a LEVEL 7 Commentor. Whoo-hoo!

On each video page you would go to Embed and then uncheck the box that says "Show suggested videos when the video finishes" That's how I would disable the related video feature.

Youtube's a funny thing but I guess that the videos either get removed because of copyright or sometimes videos are only available in certain country locations and they aren't allowed on Copyright grounds, since some videos will have ads and some won't I can't imagine that monetized videos will have anything to do with them not being shown on hubs.

I like the new comment features and it's only after reading this hub that your drew my attention to it lol!

I guess I'd better run and check the hubs I have with videos. Thankfully, there aren't too many!

It seems that you have opted for the comments to be approved before they appear on your hub. One of the changes I just noticed was in my hub-feed your hub has two comments (soon be three) with a message that said, "Your comment has been submitted. It will appear once it has been approved by the author." Personally, I would rather that message not be there and the comments to be completely invisible until approved.

What are your thoughts on that change?

And... do you still see approving comments before they are shown as a goo idea?

Great hub! Voted up and useful! (I need to improve on my commenting abilities :))

Dear Waynet ~ I always uncheck that box to disable all videos being shown. That has never made a difference when posting to Hubpages. Does that work for you when posting here?

Glad I could be of help to you, Lisa, and Jelly to take more notice of all these options. Besides learning over a period of time the incredible number of tools and features to monitor and maintain your hubpages, they keep evolving, developing and changing. Nothing stays stagnant on Hubpages or the internet.

Lisa - you are lucky if you only have a few videos to check. I've got over 130 hubpages and almost every single one features one or more YouTubes.

Regarding allowing comments. All the comments for my blogs must be APPROVED first because many scammers out there want to post junk, others want to take advantage of back-linking to their purely promotional advertising sites, others have negative things to say or unmentionable wordings, while finally the skeptics with one agenda may want to ruin someone else's party.

Good luck on Hubpages Jelly. I shall have to Hub Hop over there to see what you have got to say.

Blessings

Debby

Honestly I don't know, as I always want to show my related videos especially my drawing videos as it is a chance for others to go off and watch some more of my drawing videos, will have to check on that one!

Good hub - one thing I don't like about the new changes that seem to have just come in is that on the right side of each hub, under where it says 'Read more hubs by ' there used to be a 'Follow ' link. Now the only way to follow is to go to the hubber's profile. I found it way more convenient to follow someone directly from a hub of theirs I am reading.

Debbie,

You've always been quite generous to me in sharing my information and showing support in the Twitter stream. Thank you!

Hubpages is one place that I have limited knowledge, so I appreciate your insight offered here. I'm heading back to re-read and see how I might apply it to my strategy.

Thanks again!

Recently a number of my video links were said to be disabled. Hub pages advised me of these broken links in my account and my choice was to leave them broken or remove them. Until I made that correction Hub pages icon would appear in my account, so I chose to remove them.

However one could remove them, choose another to replace it and that I did... Great hub btw, very informative and understandable. I had no trouble with any of your great suggestions. I do however to choose to allow everyone to leave a comment without my approval first, why? because I have simply not experienced a comment that I have had to delete it due to it upsetting me. I suppose it's because 95% of my scribes are Poetry, now who wants to upset a Poet:-)) Cheers, great Hub.

This was very informative. I noticed the changes, but didn't explore them much. I guess I have a bit more editing to do if videos aren't playing. I have been trying to use more of my videos than just randomly finding them on YouTube. Great hub! There were many useful tips!

I like that you write up-to-date Hubs about the most resent changes HP is making. This is very useful. I see you are using the TITLE tags to show subject of each link when one hovers their mouse over the links. Funny that another Hub of yours talked about editing the HTML and I thought of that. You are way ahead of me. :)

Something Phil Plasma said in a comment two days earlier (above) I Just wanted to add to... HP had removed the "follow Hubber" link from all the Hubs and it's only in the profiles now. I had posted about this in one of the forums where we had a discussion about it. We all miss it and I think it should be put back. It's easier to follow someone direct from their hub when one wants to.

I've got to check out your other Hubs. You have a lot to share. Voted up and useful. Thanks for sharing.

Phil, Jellygater, Samsons, - it appears I missed responding to some of these comments. My computer was having glitches signing in the other day. Everyone ~ thanks so much for taking time to post your thoughts.

Phil ~ I tried to remember and then compare about that follow option. I think now it just says, "RELATED HUBS" and it makes sense that you would have to click over, read the hub and then follow the author.

Tipoague ~ I really love to use videos, so it will be a major job for me to go over all of my hubs and check each and every video for playability. There's a lot of refining to do. Since we have all grown and learned so much, we may end up revising our hubs along the way and correcting typos and grammatical errors, too.

Hello Glenn ~ Yeah. I'm kind of a social networking guru and know a thing or two about creating effective blogs. But, there is always more to learn and keep up with the times.

Oh, now I DO remember how you could click right on the page under a person's profile image to follow them directly. I did wonder what happened to that feature. There must have been some logic behind their decision to move it off of the individual hubs. I guess that means you would have to read their profile write up, too. I especially would like to that you for all these glowing compliments. You know what they say? 'We try harder." Let me know if you have any questions, I'm obliged to help. Blessings, Debby

Think of something pleasant that grows on you. Maybe like an epiphytic orchid that attaches itself to the canopy in a rainforest and blooms with beautiful flowers. The rash analogy brings to mind rhus tox, poison ivy, perhaps this will be a healing remedy for you one day when you have a rash.

Very informative hub, Debby! A clear explanation of all aspects around commenting.

I love it when a whole conversation develops as part of a hub (as we are seeing here). Can't imagine why someone would choose to disable comments!

I also think it is a bit rude if the author doesn't respond to the comments following a hub. One (hopefully!) wouldn't ignore someone who is talking to you, so why do that with a Hub? The feedback often is part of what motivates us to continue to write. Comments also often bring fresh ideas for new hubs. The interaction we are seeing here is the way it should be.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 5 years ago Author

Hello Dear Susan ~ I've been thinking about why someone would disable commenting. Could it be a person goes on vacation or is sick, in the hospital or has major responsibilities that would make it impossible for them to respond to comments? In this way, it may be smart to put all commenting on hold.

It is pretty cool that you can follow a thread of conversations about a particular theme or idea in the commenting section. However, it can get quite overwhelming if you visit a hub and see literally HUNDREDS of comments. Who has time to read them all?

I totally agree with you on that last comment. The comments create a behavioral Pavlov gratification pattern, whereupon we just want to write more. Many blessings, Debby

Very useful information, Debby. Do you, or any of the commenters here, have any thoughts on whether it's generally preferable to display the most recent comment first or last? I see that the comments on this hub are displayed in order from oldest to newest. Do you have a specific rationale for that choice?

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 5 years ago Author

Dear Brian ~ I have tried it both ways. My preference is to have the oldest comments at the top and the newest ones at the bottom. It reminds me of driving in the U.S. or driving in Europe, whether you are "USED TO" driving on the left or right side of the streets, or down a hallway in school. If pages are standardized the natural way to approach the page is to continue scrolling down with the conversation. Makes sense to me. Other people might just like to read the "LATEST" comment and jump off the page, so they put it at the top. Other's may have their preference and reasoning. Blessings and thanks for stopping by! Debby

brianlokker profile image

brianlokker 5 years ago from Washington DC metro area

Hi Debby, thanks for your response. I like your driving analogy, and it makes sense to me to stick with the "natural" way to read the page. I had temporarily set comments so that the most recent was at the top, but I found it more difficult to respond to an earlier comment, since the comment submission box remained at the bottom. I've now switched back to the standard layout with oldest at the top and newest at the bottom.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 5 years ago Author

Hi Brian. I do agree with you. Try something and see how it works - that's true experimentation. If it goes against the grain and finding the awkward way the comments progress, we can always 'undo' and start again fortunately for us as Hubpages authors. However, life doesn't always give us that chance to "undo" when we make major mistakes. Blessings and Happy Baseball to you, Debby [Go Yankees!]

I was wondering about the dates of the comments. Since hubs get better ratings with age, doesn't the comment section cause problems? If a viewer reads the hub, and finds out it was written two years ago, they might feel like they are reading dated information, even if the hubber has updated it.

P.S. I would rather read comments in chronological order, so I know what the commenter has already written, and the replies make more sense.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 5 years ago Author

Dear Millionaire ~ I'm not sure the hubs get better ratings with age. I would need to see some statistics to illustrate that point. The comment section provides interaction for both author and visitors. Thus, an on-going discussion, even into years, shows a level of involvement and interest in the topic. The comment section can have most current information, as well as updating the blog. I find no problem with leaving comments. Thank you for saying you prefer chronological order. I feel the same way. Blessings, Debby

Hi Debby,

Hubpages' expanded capabilities for authors go a long way towards making the writing of hubs much more interesting. When I saw it first, I noted and welcomed the motivational aspects ingrained in these tools and capabilities. I'm sure most hubbers appreciate these capabilities the way you do. Your hub further encourages other authors (including me), to be more careful in the use of these provisions for maximum benefit. Thanks for sharing. Voted up and useful. Take care
