Hubpages: How Do We Get Traffic Back? Here's How!

Free Download Funny Cats Wallpaper I added Caption From Roflbot.
Free Download Funny Cats Wallpaper I added Caption From Roflbot.

How do we get back the traffic to Hubpages? That's the question on everybody's lips. Over the last few weeks Google has been once again dropping our Hubpage traffic. For some reason Hubpages seems to have dropped off the map. so why?

I did a bit of investigating.

First of all I took a look at a few video clips from Google + about how Google works.

Long story short, one of them stated that Google will only put two of each site on Google's front page. For example two Squidoo, two Hubpages and so on, so as not to overwhelm page one with a single site.

So on this assumption I took a look. And after throwing out some random titles that I made up on the spot, I found that none of the Hubs came up at all. Try it, you may not know the name of a certain hub but you can bet your doodahs that Hubpages is usually on page one or two.

Not any more. I searched and searched right down to about page 5 before I got a random Hub.

So, whats it all about?

Is Google Being Picky?

Well that's my opinion. Like anything else in life and especially on the Internet, things change. And the new kids on the block are starting to take over.

Like a sinking ship we Hubbers and many more from other sites seem to be jumping ship. Okay we may not be leaving here, but we are all on the Bubblews band wagon.

And who can blame us? We all want to earn money, and Bubblews is a great way to get quick cash in an honest way.

But there's only one thing that leaves a sour taste for me.

I love Hubpages, and the people, and the crew, and the....well you get my point.

So, come on guys lets get this site back to the top. It's the best one out there.

I understand that we have always had the ups and downs when writing for the Internet. And Hubpages has always been one of the best sites on here.

I still believe that writing evergreen hubs is the way to go. Surely Google will realise that the short spammy sites are going to fade into oblivion pretty soon.

So the best way to write is to keep doing what we do. But maybe with a little tweak here and there it can recover much more quickly.

Check out 5.26mins. 'No more than a couple of pages of each site'

Do You Agree With These Statements On Hubpage Traffic?

See results without voting

First of all Adverts.

I have noticed a down slide ever since Hubpages have taken away our Ads.

Okay within 24 hours they are up and running, but I get the funny feeling that somewhere in hyperspace, behind the scenes or Google just having a grumble, this is messing the whole thing up.

Okay, it takes a few days for a hub to get 'placed' by Google. So why is it that since our Ads have to wait, our readers have slumped?

Apart from the fact it looks a darn mess without the Ads. Surely Hubpages knows by now who are the good writers and who are the scammers? We have been on here long enough.

In plain English, give us our Ads back. Please?

Tags and Keywords.

Doing my Sherlock Holmes bit around the site, I noticed that when my screen didn't download properly I could see behind the photos and articles. And guess what? yes.

Millions of Tags and keywords! Each and every article or photo had so many tags, (words that define the article) that in fact some of the articles were shorter than the hidden tags!

So why can't we have our tag boxes back? I know you told us that you do the tags, and now Google only goes by the keywords in the actual article, but if that's true,

WHY DOES ALL THE TOP ARTICLES HAVE HIDDEN TAGS BEHIND THEM?

One rule for them and one rule for us.

Layout.

If you look at another Site's layout, its totally different to ours. Yes they do sometimes have photos, and yes they do have lots of writing. But.....

It really all depends on what they are writing about.

I took a look at quite a few different Articles. Many of them just had writing, with a few links or Ads in between.

Obviously the Celeb Sites had loads of photos. This I believe is purely because the people who read about the celebs only want to read a little bit then look at the pictures.

The serious ones however, just had the facts. And that was all.

Source

How Many Words?

And last but not least, these days many people want a quick fix. Literally. They want the facts and that's it.

I think the days of very long articles are at an end. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should just write a few paragraphs and that's it. But surely 500 to 700 hundred words will do it.

Hopefully our readers will come back. And even more to the point Google will stop pushing and pulling us all over the place.

Hubpages is worth the effort.

But maybe its time for a change of style.

Thanks for the info and it sure makes sense, like nothing here does. I think articles too long are bad too but you know how Hp has always pushed for them, that is why everyone falls asleep before they get to the end of my poems! But some can write 10 words and ride the high 90's but then I am probably ------ about stuff you are not talking about, huh? lol ^

Good job Nell!

I'm kind of the odd duck here at HP because I never came here to make money. :) I use this as a platform to stage my articles for later use in magazines and ebooks, and most importantly I'm here to be a part of a great community of writers. So the Google problems really don't bother me that much...but I certainly understand.

Having said that, your last statement about article length is a wise one. Magazines are looking for articles between 700-1000 words...rarely will you find one that accepts 1500 words like HP wants...so you will end up cutting your article down to 700 words if you ever submit them to magazines for publication.

Anyway, great points my friend.

Thanks for taking the time to try and answer a question that's been on every hubber's mind more and more these days. I love writing on Hubpages but more and more I've been considering looking elsewhere to try and make more money. I used to get hundreds of views a day but now I'm averaging about 80, even though I have more hubs than I did before.

Touchee, Nell. You did your homework and I think you are correct about things. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Again, it is summer and it is a time when our views drop, but your checking this stuff out makes a lot of sense to me. I wouldn't have known where to begin, but, I did check my own hubs, and some that were on page 1 for some time, were not longer on page 1. I knew something was up with google. I agree - bring back the tags; that seemed to help alot. I don't thing the p0wers that be seem to care about hub pages falling in views or care that good writers are leaving. I am wondering if they feel HP has run its course. I don't know, but when the staff here at HP doesn't respond or seem to care, it makes me wonder. Thanks for a great hub!

Thanks for sharing your discoveries, Nell. Sadly some hubbers, and surely me as well, at least occasionally, publish nothing worthwhile to read in the eyes of Google. Google is only interested in INFORMATION, and not in discussions, fiction, poetry or any personal issues. I've seen a lot of junk in BBlews as well, so Google may soon ignore them as well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and assuring me that I am not the only one pondering about the current state of affairs in HubPages.

Well done, Nell. Thank you for all the work and time you spent on this investigation. I submitted several articles over the last few weeks and began wondering this morning if my articles are too long and have too may images in them. On another site I write for, the requirement was 400 - 1000 words per article, only one image and one or two links, that was it. The site does quite well as far as traffic goes, but there are so many demands on the writers and absolutely no pay, all volunteer work and hard work. No AdSense was allowed either. So, to get to my point, shorter articles and less images/links are much better for traffic.

Thanks for this hub, Nell. I appreciate it.

You are right about the hub lengths. Sometimes I naturally write a long hub and that is fine. Other times I feel like I am intentionally long winded, but the quality is missing. I think anything 600 words or more should be fine. Also, I will be honest... I don't see the value in trying to force videos or polls or whatever in a hub. I might include one special capsule, but I don't see a need for two. Oh well. HubPages still looks better than Infobarrel or Squidoo any day.

Voted up!!! Great work and research!

Yeah, I think you are right Nell. The days of long articles seem to be passe. Google probably prefers shorter articles but more focused ones. Also, I feel all the changes the HP has done are seemingly experiments that have failed on the most part.

I've also been concerned about the lack of response but am committed to enjoying the process of writing and being part of the community. Still, writers tend to want to be read by someone.

Aside from Google issues which I don't know enough to weigh in on, I wonder whether some of the lack of traffic, at least internal to HubPages, might be due to the "known [technical] issue" about not all hubs displaying on the Browse All Hubs Topics page after page one. (See technical forum post from 5 days ago.) Aside from Hubbers and topics that I follow, this is most often how I peruse the site. Only the newest of the new hubs are on there due to this technical issue. Older hubs are thus buried and one must dig deeper to find them.

Good job, Nell. I agree with you regarding the length of our hubs. I don't want to spend 10 minutes reading an article. As for the rest of the information you present in this hub, I really don't know what to make of it. Since July I've been getting more traffic to my hubs and as a result, earning more money on HP than in the nearly two years since I joined. I'm not here to make a living; I do that elsewhere as a writer. I am here to hone my skill, write what I want instead of what is assigned to me and build a portfolio to sell to better paying markets, such as (as Bill stated) magazines and other more profitable publications. I do see many of my works on page one (IE search engine) when I google my full name. In fact, one of my poems shows up in the first spot on page one (after the paid links). I spent quite a bit of time tweaking my unfeatured hubs. Since then, all but two are featured, I'm earning more money thru views and AdSense and my presence in the search engines has increased. We're living in an SEO world where keywords are king as far as gaining a higher place in the search engines. That's just life in the world of internet writing.

Interesting and a good job on all the research you have been doing Nell Rose. I can't complain about my traffic myself as it is the highest it has ever been but perhaps that is because I have a few more Hubs. For me the most concerning thing is that we don't seem to hear much from the powers that be. They surely must have an opinion about all of this and I am sure they don't want everyone to move!!! Super Nell to the rescue!!! Wow, I truly appreciate you taking the time to investigate such so thoroughly here. And here I was thinking that it was just summer and everyone is on vacation LOL Yes, these long, long hubs are not only really a lot to constantly write, but to read so much is just too much. I joined HP to just get a feel if anyone cared to read the message I wanted to convey in my writing, and have been pleasantly surprised. After over a year, I finally signed up to earn ... : )

Now, I may have missed something, but there are ads on hubs? Sorry.

I think those true poets here on HP should be able to write their poetry as they deem fit, as poetry is an art form, and if HP is a writing site and allows the topic of poetry, then it should not attempt to turn poetry into something it is not. One of my favorite famous poets, e. e. Cummings wrote a poem on a typewriter and here it is in its entirety ... "you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars" That's it! Those who do not understand poetry really have no business messing with it, here on HP. HP needs to let poetry be poetry.

Yes, all of us need to step up and attempt to write quality hubs to the best of our ability and maybe then, HubPages can be saved. Yes, let us do our part!

I am about to change things up a bit here shortly : )

You're the best!!! Thank you again dearest Nell for all of your hard work.

I completely agree with you, especially regarding the Tags and word limit. Who has the time to read more than 500-700 words article. It is so easy to switch sites.

In any case the changes introduced here has not helped increased traffic, as can be observed in Q-A sections and Forum discussions.

Hi Nell.

Good of you to investigate for us all and come up with some great answers.

I really must find the time to get on with bubblewes and see what I can do to drive more traffic to my hubs.

my top hub ( about heat related swollen ankles) was going great gun´s and coming up as number one, page one on Google searches during the heat wave in the UK ( it´s always been my most clicked on hub and has the very highest score of them all) But then HP pulled it because they said I had either unrelated links or products. I checked and could not see for the life of my what they were talking about, everything I was promoting was mentioned and related to what I was writing about. Never the less I pulled off some Amazon products and was republished. However because of this my hit´s dropped from over 400 in one day ( best ever) to just 30 and I´m sure it was because this hub had been unpublished. I´m now very disappointed and wonder how long it will take until Google ranks me so high again. I am presuming because the hub was pulled it will be like publishing a new hub and take time for the bots to find it.

To be quite honest I am loosing faith in all this writing stuff, I thought I could earn some decent money from it but with hubs being un- featured now on a regular basis, hubs being unpublished for god knows what reason and then Google ´s changes I am really beginning to think it is time to change tack and look at writing for something that does in fact lead to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow instead of the pittance and frustration I am getting here.

I still love the HP community and the way everything is done makes it really easy to make an excellent layout etc. But all the changes, politics and lack of earnings really is hard to cope with. Like you I want to earn for my hard work and it just seems that the promise is not in sync with the reality .

Hi Nell,

Thanks for your detective work. I was beginning to think that everyone went on their holidays and decided to ignore the internet!

I too think the time of the longer hub is passed. When I go to a page I want the information and not the 'fluff'. If I go to a recipe site for banana cream pie, I want the recipe not the nutritional value in a banana!

I even question the sense in using personal stories. How many people really care why you decided to use a product, they just want to know if it will work for them.

The internet is constantly evolving and we, the Hubpage community, need to evolve as well lest we become dinosaurs. Perhaps eggs in many baskets will soften the blows of Google Gods.

I can't disagree with a single thing you've said Nell. Truth be told I'm not a big 'hubber' but even so I've been keeping my eye on what's going on online especially with G - who let's face it is a bit picky - but I never thought it would bypass HP like it's been doing recently. But I guess G keeps us on our toes - if nothing else. Thanks for all the research Nell. Nice hub and naturally voted up.

Thank you for the hard work you put into investigating and sharing your information. I think, for some reason, Google has something against HubPages itself. I don't know why they would penalize our hubs so severely otherwise. I rarely see a HubPages article when I am doing a search and last year I would find several. Out of 79 featured hubs, I only have 3 on page 1 now.

I know that the HubPages team is trying to figure out what Google wants and is trying to make changes that will get us back on track. Hopefully they will find the right changes and we can get our traffic back to what it once was.

Thank you for doing all your hard work and sharing the information with us. I have to agree with everything you've said here. Voted up and interesting. :)

Thanks everyone for your comments. Just to clear it up about the Adverts, I meant that when we first publish it takes a while for the Adverts to be added to our hubs. Back in the old days we got them straight away, now its 24 hours or less sometimes. I think its crucial to have ads straight from the beginning so anyone who reads from facebook or twitter etc can click on the ads if something catches their eye. if there are no ads it doesn't look professional and of course we lose out, thanks all for reading, nell

I still feel like HP pushes for longer articles with a good amount of pictures. So I've been taking my time and writing lengthy articles with valid information to the topic. My traffic has definitely dropped but is started to climb up a little bit each day, luckily. Nell - would you suggest I jump on the bubblews bandwagon too?

The Examiner-1 3 years ago

After reading your Hub I agree with what I saw, and read, in most areas. I may not be as familiar with everything to agree with it all. One thing which came to mind while I was reading it was when I have looked at my Search site in my Stats area. I wondered why they only list Google and Bing under this tab. I had done some searching on my own to do with a few of my own Hubs - not all of them. I found them basically on p. 1-2 at about 3-4 other search engines, besides Google & Bing, plus 2 MetaSearch engines.

Hi Examiner, I wondered that too, I try to find all sorts of different areas on my google stats etc, and some show up and others don't, I will go and investigate, thanks!

Hi kitty, mine is going back up slightly, I have got two payments from Bubblews, its great for short pieces, and doesn't take five minutes. the only thing is that to earn we have to read copious amounts of others stuff to make it fair and then they read ours which brings the clicks, so far so good, most of us are over there as we speak! lol! sometimes it goes down for long periods thats the only problem, thanks as always, nell

Hi Nell Rose - well done and I hope your hard work is heeded. I totally agree with Annie (Bac2basics) I'm getting nowhere fast. Admittedly, I've been away, and a little slack - but even so I can see the difference - in attitude also.

Anyway, I'll think it over and see what transpires - thinking of the old adage 'A change is as good as a rest.' Thank you for all your investigative efforts and theories and may things turn around.I guess I'll plod on for a while. Best wishes Nell Rose...

Hi Nell.

I just Google´d swollen ankles heat to see if my former page 1 number 1 hub on that topic came up and it didn´t since HP pulled it for unrelated products or links ( in my view nothing was unrelated at all but there you go) Even when I put the correct title of the hub in, it still didn´t appear and I see that it was all e.how, netdoctor, wikipedia and those type of sites which did appear, so you are most definitely on to something askew here.

I was right in my assumption that after being unpublished briefly that this top hub is now doing virtually nothing and I am lucky to get 30 views in total per day from everything I have published. Just when I thought I was at long last heading to a 3 monthly payment and hoping to make it a monthly occurrence my hopes have been dashed and its very discouraging. One can only continue flogging a dead horse for so long, and despite everyone´s efforts including yours to keep spirits up and encourage us all to keep writing and wait and see, I am less than inspired at this low point in my fledgling career I have to admit.

I daresay I will at some point get going again when I have more time for writing, but with one disappointment after yet another change from Google or HP there´s little wonder that so many of those I follow are no longer bothering to put finger to keyboard.

By the way Nell, as always a great hub and I do love your pictures and captions, they are always fantastic and really eye catching. Wish I could find half the sites you get them from, and want to ask do you actually pay for pics or are they all from freebie sites ?

I have to agree with the shorter hubs, too. After all, we were told how short our attenti0on span was. When I read something, though, I read from start to finish, as many will attest to, right down to spelling errors. Try this: original material that nobody has up. Life at Boomer Lake is going through the roof with views. I know that a good part of it is the pictures, which is why I think the blog is out of sight.

You must listen very critically to anything Matt Cutts says in a video. He's the ultimate politician. Almost everything that comes out of his mouth is prefaced with "usually" or "mostly" or "generally."

Google is not going to reveal their strategy to publishers: all they have is their secrecy. Without their deep dark unpublished algorithms they are just another Bing.

Wikipedia is a great example. Pick a popular keyword and Google it: the number one result is nauseatingly predictable. Why is that? Wikipedia is a pirate site with more copyright violations than any torrent. The writing is inconsistent and often biased. Yet somehow the site pops up all too frequently at the top of Google search results. Ask Matt to 'splain that.

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose 3 years ago from England Author

Thanks nicomp, you have some great points there. And we poor minions will never ever understand their thinking. I suppose the thing to do is just keep writing because we love it, and hopefully one of these days Google will appreciate us! lol!

Great article, helpful to us writers and should be to HP if they will listen. Lol

I agree with you about the length of text. Quite often the same thing (explanation or whatever) will be repeated two or three times through an article, I'm sure a lot of this is done just to stretch out the word count but I find it tedius to read.

You have done a lot of research into this and it is appreciated. Thank you

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose 3 years ago from England Author

Take a scroll down your page to the comment section. First you see a Google ad and then related searches, and then a long list of Related Hubs. On the sidebar are still another group of Related Searches. This is just when you are finished with the hub. There are so many more ads at the top and bottom of the page. None of this can sit well with Google.

It is almost overwhelming for the reader. There is nothing we can do. Hubpages has remove some of this junk off our pages.

I've been doing a little writing at Bubblews too. Do you have the same user name over there? I'll connect with you.

Nell, well done my friend. My website has tanked and I've seen the same results. Your spot on with your investigation. I truly believe we may be better writing for our own domain. I use to rank for keywords, had over 150 first page rankings, and now they are all gone. If I'm lucky, I get a second page ranking. We see a lot of changes at Hubpages and not all of them are better. If it's not broken, why fix it? I liked the page format of years ago, about a 1 1/2 ago to be actual. It sucks, what can I say. Well done though Nell, voted up, useful, awesome, interesting, and shared.

Hi lyric, good to see you, yes me too, it was free and easy, and I think the main problem is that we all have our own individual style of writing, but with all the new 'lock and key' style, we are losing our own personalities, and thats what I believe is making us sink, thanks as always, nell

Nell, I agree with you that those short choppy sites seem to pop up all too often. With the question being, is that what people really want? Not me! I want to read an in depth article with information and some helpful images - just what we do here at HP.

So many people are looking up info on those little small screen devices. So a large article may be too much. But I figure that if I like longer, magazine type articles, others will too. There is hope!

The natural rhythm of things would indicate that as the internet grows in age, so will the number of articles on it. As this dilution occurs, and more sites come online just like hubpages, we will see less and less traffic and become less and less significant.

Very interesting Nell. I believe HubPages is the best of its kind out there and it's a shame so many quality writers on here are losing traffic. I never got much in the first place, so I haven't been hit as hard as others. I joined Bubblews, but I just don't feel there's the same level of quality (to say the least) or camaraderie, and I've never been able to really get enthused about it. I hope HubPages holds on. Hello Nell!

My hubs have lost a lot of traffic, which isn't a huge deal to me since I just like being able to write when I have the time. That being said, my most popular hub on how to make Hot Totties, DOES show up on the first page of a google search. This has always been the case for this particular hub, which is why I think it will always be my most successful hub. I've done several other recipes, trying to feed off the success of that one, but nothing has had the same level of success.

Ahh well, such is life. I'm working on several new pieces now so maybe, just maybe, one of these will jump that google hurdle! :)

I like many other creative writers never joined Hub Pages intending to get rich or for that matter make a dime, nor cared too. Meeting fellow writers and poets was my aim when I joined back in 2009 when we had plenty of talented writers sharing and communicating with one another. They were storytellers, poets, authors. Most of them have left, a few like myself leave a few pieces of their work here to share, as well I come in to visit and leave comments on certain writers works.

Although I find most of the articles How to do this? copy and paste type of work, it does not amuse me. People are simply flooding this site with How Too's! In order for this site to get back to its roots, it needs the creative writers and poets back. The mix has to return to Hub Pages or it will decay and it's beginning to show that right now. Your hub proved that. Yes, many are flooding the airwaves over at Bubblews for a quick financial fix and when writers like Habee can claim to have received $500 in just a short period of time it draws even more there.

Of course people will say they earn more at Bublews than at the Hubs and they would be correct, but for how long? Until they are going somewhere else chasing the dollar. I fully understand the need for money in these very turbulent financial times, especially in the USA. However if the Hubs and members who remain here want to see more traffic, then they HAVE TO GET BACK THE QUALITY MIX OF WRITERS they have lost in hoards. By doing this, the traffic will increase. I'm just saying, in this humble poets opinion. Thank you for producing this very informative and much needed hub dear Nell.

Article length is an important factor to rank in the eyes of Google and other search engines, provided of course that the actual content is something worth reading.

The optimum length of a specific article depends greatly on the subject. Articles containing as low as 300-400 words (not to say less in some cases) can do astonishingly well in terms of incoming organic traffic, compared to mega-posts that are completely irrelevant to anything and can be classified as typical cases of writing complete fluff.

With more and more information uploaded daily on the World Wide Web, it doesn’t come as a surprise the fact that it becomes increasingly difficult to find virgin and poorly researched fields where you can offer your expertise to a global audience and get rewarded by Google with top position in relevant search results.

I think key to that is freshness of content and how you handle it.

For those readers who are not yet aware, early this fall Google launched a game changing update to their algorithm called "Hummingbird." It is a massive technological feat since it evaluates for "context" (semantic search). While keywords are still important, it is looking for how those words are being used as well. This update is still in the early stages. So it is likely that traffic on many, many websites in the world will experience traffic fluctuations. It is not a problem exclusive to HP.

So, please, dear hubbers, if you're stressing about Google, redirect your energies into writing or updating your quality hubs. This Hummingbird update was designed to, eventually, weed out the junk content that litters the web. And this will take time.

Here's more reading on the update: http://searchengineland.com/google-hummingbird-172...

Honestly, I've been having pretty good traffic on some of my hubs lately. It also mirrors the traffic volume on one of my more popular blogs. So hang in there everyone!

Hi Nell, I think you're on to something here. We have lost traffic for sure. I remember when at the side of the page there was a boast of 50 million views daily. The staff has said they believe that even if it's not broken, they want to fix it. (In the recent blog on the new editing feature). That is a strange philosophy to me. It was working, now it's not. Perhaps it's that most readers want to read something quick and informative rather than lengthy and full of media clips and polls. Maybe not.

I think you are correct Peg. No one has much spare time these days.

@Neil Rose et al: One way of getting some extra traffic is that when you write an article on HubPages, write another releveant article on EZine Articles and backlink it to your HubPage article in the resource box and always make sure when you write an article either place, you promote it on your social networks. Another way that seems to get some good response is to write an article that is contrary to most people's opinions and beliefs, because if you piss people off they will read your articles and comment on them.

Great analysis and observations, you are so right long articles do not catch the attention of readers, they just do not have the patience to read it. As you say 400 -700 words are just enough. Getting tags back is a great idea!
