Hubpages Main Page Stream Features Explanation Tutorial

An Old Dog Learns New Tricks On Hubpages

Every day that you play on Hubpages, you learn more features, options and tricks. Either things you never knew or all of a sudden realizing that something new has appeared that wasn't there before. In this case, it seems the main stream on Hubpages front page shows a few upgrades.

The graphics below and the notes show all the interesting main parts of the front page. Most of this you might already know, but a few things in this Hubpages tutorial may surprise you.

**********
1.
Note the new Video Feature in Red
There will be different icons for a variety of categories
Over time you will begin to learn and recognize each icon
A. Video - Red
B. Hub - Peach
C. Forum - Tangerine
D. Comment - Blue
E. Question - Green

**********
2. If you have a photograph or a video an image will appear and add a focal point, interest and contrast so your Hub stands out

**********
3. Your short summary will be crawled by google for keywords. Highly recommended to fill in this section on your Hub for improved SEO

**********
4.
Your choice. Do you want to keep following and maybe receive notices when anyone posts a new comment? If not, you may unfollow here or on the Hub.

**********
5. X marks the spot. This surprised me, because I'd never used this option before. I have created a little pull-out for you to see up close what happens when you click the "X". I accidentally did that and my Hubs disappeared from view on the main page and I didn't know how to get it back. We'll get to that in a minute.

**********
6. Your profile image sits nicely in the far left of the screen. We want to meet you.

**********
7. You may comment directly on the front page, but have you first read the Hub to make a lucent comment?

**********
8. The Flag option will enable you to notify Hubpages Team Members if you feel something does not abide by the HP Regulations and Agreement Guidelines.

**********
9. Preview button opens a pop-up window of the Hubpages for you to skim through quickly without leaving the main page. Once you close it, that would be a good time to comment and rate.

**********
10. Share Button for you to share with YOUR followers on Hubpages, which will expand the reach of this particular Hub. There will most likely be overlaps, however, if the author of the Hub has 800 followers and you have 2000 followers, this will really boost their visibility within the community. Please be kind and share.

**********
11. Mysteriously, there is no explanation for number 11

**********
12. This pull out of number "5" has four parts.
A. Hide your stories from being seen on the main front page screen by everyone
I'm not sure why a person would take this action, but it is available if you are a closet writer, or maybe revamping all your Hubs
B. Hide stories from view in just a select category
C. Hide only this one selected story at this time
D. Click the "Change my feed settings" and a new window opens (shown below)

Explanations for each numbered item is listed above.

What happens when you post a status update, like on Twitter or Facebook. It goes on the front page with a couple of options. See the following three screen images.

  • You can see the time when the message was posted in the status update

  • You may comment in return when someone posts a 'status' message

  • Oops! Did you make a mistake or want to take back what you wrote. You can. Click the "Delete" button.

  • And, like the number "5" in the previous image, you can select to hide it.

To the right you see the screen that opens when you click "Change My Feed Settings"

At the very top you have a chance to do a Search and then follow others who are talking about a particular issue or theme

Filter by Topic shows the areas of HP that you have already selected to follow.

Then you may "Filter By Type"

Here are your choices for selecting and sorting in what items on HP you want to actively participate.

HUBS:
you wrote
Answering our questions
by users you are following
in topics that you are following
answering questions that you also answered

COMMENTS:
you made on Hubs that you wrote
by users you are following
on Hubs that you commented on

FORUM POSTS
you made
in topics that you posted on
by users you are following
in forums of topics that you are following

QUESTIONS
questions for you
questions by users you are following
questions in topics that you are following
answers you wrote answers to your questions
answers by users you are following
answers in topics that you are following
answers to questions that you also answered

You should be seeing the pattern by now and all the relationships you have the opportunity to make, plus all the ways you may stay active on this network of authors.

STATUS UPDATES
of users you are following

FOLLOWERS
of or by you
of users you are following
of topics that you are following

MILESTONES
that you achieved
of users you are following
of all users

**********

Put to memory the colorful icons for each parameter.

**********

Finally coming to the end you will see the main option either to keep these items HIDDEN FROM POSTING AND FROM VIEWING ON THE MAIN FEED STREAM or UNHIDDEN and when you are done editing you will see it say, "ALL PEOPLE AND TOPICS ARE VISIBLE" Therefore, we all have many parameters and options to select just how much of our activity will be in public view. You will be able to see your own activity in your dashboard as shown in the Hubpages on Notifications.

I'm going to go back and make sure my short summaries have the proper keywords on my hubs ~ a great point. Nicely organized information for new and experienced hubbers. Thanks and SHARED!

Hello Melis ~ Good idea. You can really see what happens when you write excellent keyword summaries of the proper length. These synopsis appear on the front main page stream and attract others who might think to visit your page.

These little tweaks to your pages will reap great rewards. Blessings, Debby

I almost did #5 did this morning. I was thinking what could have happened if I clicked the X. I'll review my items in # 3. Our hub pages also looks different tonight. Thank you for writing this informative hub!

Hello Kelly and the Girls ~ Since authoring this Hubpages, even more changes have occurred on the front page. I went to the main page to find the forum, and instead of seeing the menu across the top, we now find 'drop down' submenus. I will demonstrate these above. Thanks for your lovely visit and encouragement here on Hubpages where friends share what they know and learn to help each other. Blessings, Debby

I think that in reference to number 5 it is difficult for HP to filter away your own hubs posted and show only an X beside hubs that are not the person signed in to the site. Therefore, we can see the option to hide our own stories. But I think what that does is hide your own hubs from your own view on the feed, not hide your hubs from everyone's view. I'm guessing this, because I have used number 5 before to hide hubs by authors or sub-topics I didn't want to read in topics I was following overall. For example, I follow pets and animals and will get all hubs written about pets and animals show up on my feed page regardless of the author. But I am terrified of spiders, so I hid them from view. Now hubs on spiders will not even show up on my feed even when they are written by people I am following. But I've only hidden them from my own feed page. So I think that number 5 for your own hubs follow the same theme. But I am not about to test it in case I am wrong....

Hello Flora ~ Quite interesting bit of news on #5. It may be possible that the "X" Factor has a few dynamic modes of action. 1) For the owner of Hubs they will or will not want to display on the mainstream and 2) For everyone else publishing on Hubpages. Thus, by clicking the "X" in different instances, it can apply different types of rules. The only way to find out is to try. Thanks so much. Debby

Hi, great info, and some of it I really need to go back and take a look at. I think thats the trouble, we get so used to it, that we can miss the good bits to do, I am now going to take a look myself, great stuff! cheers nell

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Hello Nell ~ I advise to take it slowly. Institute one new thing at a time, otherwise information overload makes it harder to absorb. Get into habit of checking one thing at a time so it feels natural. Maybe check the timeline once a week.

You may use this as a check list if you wish. Thus, when creating a Hub, check off the items that will improve your hub visibility. Making sure you have inserted a photograph, a video, some titles, keywords repeated, and a short summary with keywords.

How often you comment on the main page stream is up to you. But, I have learned that you will only want to comment on 1-3 Hubs at a time and then come back a number of hours later. Even though I find myself reading many Hubs and wanting to comment upon 5-10 hubs at a time, I've realized this timing does not improve your score and may lower your score.

I find #12 very interesting and gives you many ways to adjust your personal view of Hubpages.

Blessings,

Debby

Thanks so much. There was information in your Hub that makes it all the more interesting to be writing and reading on Hub pages and also more interactive with others. I looked your Hub up because I couldn't understand what 'status' meant, so now let's see what I learned!!!!

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Dear GoodLady ~ That's fabulous to learn that this humble hubpages turns up in the search engine for the keyword "Status" very cool! And, do you want to know the strangest thing of all? The word 'status' is not even written once on the entire page. This tells us something about the search engines. It finds the group of words and phrases that leads to the information which you search.

I do hope this information has answered your questions and has been helpful. Blessings, Debby

Hi Spy ~ I really haven't been spending much time here lately. Over my head in obligations elsewhere. But, whenever I learn something new, I do like to share. I'm a whirl of creative ideas. If I had a couple of life times, I could write a whole bunch more Hubs. Blessings, Debby

Presuming therefor that the Hubs you do write are significantly important (limited to one lifetime as we each are) I will stop by regularly...so don't space them too far between the needed "fits of creativity." Have a great July.

I suppose HP is trying to make management of our hubs, forums threads, etc., easier by having it all in one place. I personally use this as a guide to see what's going on. But I don't like to comment from there since I'm not getting the full story. When I see an interesting question or forum thread that I want to comment on, I click to it to read more before commenting. And hubs, well, I'd rather go to the hub to read it than in the preview.

As for your hub, you did a great job describing all this in wonderful detail with helpful visuals. Well done Debby. Voted up.

Dear Glenn - What a sweet surprise! This Hub is 2 years old and I'm absolutely sure that HP must have many a trillion changes by now. So, thanks for taking the time here and I hope everything is going well for you. Much appreciate your vote. Blessings, Debby
