I Left My HubNuggets in San Francisco: Gilligan's Island HubNuggets

The Hubnuggets team couldn't have been happier! After being castaways on a deserted island for a few hours, and then rescued in just a few short hours, they were now cruising the oceans aboard a luxury yacht.

When ripplemaker first washed up on the beach, things had looked pretty bleak, but as one after another of the team found their way to the tiny island, they were happily re-united.

The skipper of the yacht had been only too happy to take the team on board, explaining that he'd been on his way to deliver the yacht to its new owners in San Francisco when he, too, was caught in the freak storm that swamped the team's out-rigger canoes.

Flower Power Philosophy...

Heading for San Francisco...

"I'm sure the Howell's won't mind a short delay while we take you back to the resort," said the skipper, beaming jovially at the team.

"But, Skipper, we're kinda short handed, and Mr. Howell will be really annoyed if we don't get there on time." The first mate nervously twisted his cap, as the skipper turned to him, glowering.

"Actually, we could help you," volunteered Patty Inglish MS. "Our head office is in San Francisco, and we'd be happy to crew for you. That way, you can make your delivery on time, and we can sail home in style."

"Wonderful!" said the skipper. "Gilligan, show our friends to their staterooms, and introduce them to Maryanne and Ginger while we get underway."

"How exciting! I've always wanted to crew a yacht," declared Patty.

"I've always wanted to cruise on a yacht," sighed KoffeeKlatch Gals. "Not crew one."

ladyjane1 poked Gals cup. "Let the Patty and the kitties climb the masts and haul on the yard arms - or whatever it is they do," she said. "You and ripplemaker and I can be the chief cooks and bottle washers!"

"Sounds good to me, lj," said ripplemaker. "Let's get started on lunch."

As the team gathered their bags and headed below, RedElf wondered why the First Mate seemed so familiar. "Gilligan, Maryanne, Ginger - where have I heard those names before?" she mused. Aloud, she said, "Hey, guys, did you know that in the 1960's, San Francisco was a hotbed of philosophical debate - flower power, hippies, and free love? What a great tie in to this week's categories! Let's look over the nominees in Religion and Philosophy before we get too busy."

My favorite "hippy dippy" weather forecaster

The weather started getting rough...

Shortly after lunch, the weather turned rough. The kitties, soaked with rain and salt spray, headed into the wheelhouse to dry off.

"We'd better radio ahead for the latest forecast," said Enelle Lamb, shaking water off her hat.

His eyes glued to the storm swells ahead as he kept the yacht on course, the first mate yelled over his shoulder to the radio man, "Hey, Professor, what's the weather up the coast?"

"Long Beach - overcast and rainy, San Jose - clearing, but windy, San Francisco - fogged in, as usual, but not rainy. San Francisco doesn't get that much rain, you know. The average rainfall varies from a high of 4.7 inches in January to a low of 0.04 inches in July. Isn't science exciting?"

"Thanks, Professor," replied the first mate. "We call him 'The Professor' 'cause he's really smart," the mate added proudly.

The radioman ducked his head modestly. "Thanks, Gilligan, but really, I just like to read a lot."

RedElf shook her head to get the water out of her ears. "Why do those names sound so darned familiar?" She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she knew she'd heard them somewhere before.

Just then, the radio crackled as Simone and Maddie checked in with the list of nominees in the Education and Science category.

"Thanks, ladies," said Enelle. "Now, we can all read and vote. Let Jason know we'll make port this afternoon, as long as this storm doesn't get any worse."

Which one of this week's Education and Science nominees is your favorite?

"High on a hill, it calls to me..."

"Oh, I can hardly wait - Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Union Square, shopping at Ghirardelli's, the Presidio, Gump's, those little cable cars climbing half-way to the stars..." ripplemaker was poring over her sightseeing plans.

"I can hardly wait to see Golden Gate Bridge - I hear the park there is amazing," added ladyjane1. "Were you able to get tickets for our day-trip to Alcatraz Island?"

"I can already hear Tony Bennet singing. Do you think we'll see a car chase?" Gals asked wistfully. "The Streets of San Francisco was one of my favorite shows."

Ginger and Maryanne laughed. "The winds have died down, and we'll make port soon. There will be lots of exciting things to do and see once you're there."

"Including a trip to Minna Street to drop off the list of Gender and Relationship nominees in person, instead of emailing," announced Patty, as she grabbed her bags and headed topside. "We can all read them together this week!"

Soon, the team stood on the dock, waving goodbye to their yachting friends.

"What a nice couple," remarked Gals, watching the new owners board their yacht and prepare to set sail. "Interesting names, too... Thurston and Lovey... so friendly."

As the team loaded their bags into the waiting taxi, RedElf glanced over her shoulder at the departing yacht. "Interesting indeed. I'm Googling them all as soon as we get to Minna Street."

I miss George Carlin's weather man. But, I have read and voted before Googling our yachting guests. One looks a little like Mr. Magoo and another, like a beatnik of old...

Oooooh - can't wait to read and vote! And THANK YOU for the George Carlin clip - I remember his Hippy DIppy Weatherman bits - gosh, he looks so young there! I loved his humor.

Off to read and vote!

billybuc, Thanks so much - it was great fun to write! I love to mess about with plots and connections.

Patty, I'm so glad you Googled them - my phone hasn't dried out yet from all that salt water. Speaking of beatniks... been there, done that, in my own staid way, LOL! I miss Carlin's weatherman, too.

Marcy, I remember George Carlin with great fondness - and I remember being younger then, too. Thanks for stopping by to read and vote.

Hi Redelf..How clever to link a story around a competition. As you know I am a nominee this week and still don´t know why or how, it´s all a bit confusing for a newbie, but still a great honour. Voted you up and following.

What a team! What talent! What a hub!

San Francisco was once my home - and yes that's where my heart is right along with Tony. Now, if y'all will excuse me, I must go read some hubs. Voted way up and all across.

HELP PLEASE REDELF...I am nominated for this weeks hub nuggets for my hub " living with ghosts-my true recollections of being the landlady in a haunted pub" but there doesn´t appear to be anywhere for people to vote for me on that page. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Cheers.

Hi, Elle. Anyone who shares my admiration for George Carlin AND Tony Bennett is my kind of person. Thanks for including them in this interesting, well-written hub.

Nice to see you, ripplemaker, You'll find lots of good hubs to read!

bac2basics, your hub was selected from among all the eligible hubs in the same category. It's a top-notch hub - congratulations, and best of luck.

vocalcoach, so glad you enjoyed the article. My mother adored San Francisco, so it was a no-brainer for me. Thanks for the vote-up.

ladyjane1, I couldn't find the honeybees version, but I will sure take another look! Thanks for stopping by to read and vote.

drbj, they are long-time favs, so glad to find another enthusiast!

bac2basics, no-one will be able to vote for your hub on the actual hub. You can tell everyone to go to the round-up hub to vote for your hub.

Hope this helps

bac2basics profile image

bac2basics 4 years ago from Spain

Do you mean this hub ? I copied and pasted the information for this to my friends, but they still don´t get it. Thanks for taking the time to answer me anyway. perhaps it would just be easier all around if there was something actually on the hub that´s been nominated.

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

bac2basics, we do a round-up hub so that all the nominees are in the same place - the process may seem a bit awkward if people just want to vote for one particular hub, but this way is easier for everyone to read them all at the same time.

There is a link on your hub that your friends can follow to get here, though. When ripplemaker visits each nominee, she leaves a link to this round-up hub in her comment. Just ask your friends to click on that link, and then vote for your article once they get here.

ripplemaker profile image

bac2basics: Hi Annie, I must have sensed your confusion coz I decided to go back to your hub. LOL and when I came here and saw that you asked what to do --- what a coincidence that I explained to you what the Hubnuggets is all about. Hope RedElf's explanation and mine are helping you understand what to do. And yes, just copy the whole url address found on the browser above and give that your friends :)

Voted, although it wasn't easy.

Good luck nominees.

Thanks for the assist, ripplemaker, hopefully b2b's friends will all get here to vote :)

Gals, I'm so glad you enjoyed our West Coast adventure! It certainly was hard enough to choose the nominees, there were so many great ones in each category! Good luck to everyone!

Thanks so much for stopping by to support our newer writers, Pam! It was super hard this week narrowing down the choices, too.

donnaMhicks 4 years ago

Hi everyone. I realy hate to do this, in case I received votes for my hub, which has been nominated this week ("Child Marriage" under Gender and Relationships), but I am asking those who may have voted for me to please vote for someone else if you can. I am so very sorry to mess this up in the middle of the week. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

I asked for help in the forums recently because I have been having trouble linking AdSense with HP. I posted again earlier tonite and received a nasty, condescending remark in the forum thread from another HP writer. She has been here long enough to know better. There is a huge difference between constructive criticism and telling someone that, among other things, they "lack the ability" to make money from online writing. I am extremely upset over the remark and have removed all my hubs and am submitting the proper request to close my HP account.

No one deserves to be treated in such a manner, whether it is a person like myself who has had the esteemed honor of winning an award from Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Population Services International, and is published in print in over 60 countries as well as extensively online, and has won numerous other writing contests, with more than 2 decades writing experience or whether it is a person who has never written a single article or hub before. I repeat; no one deserves such nasty, hateful remarks! We are all here for the same thing!

Thanks so much all my followers and new friends I have made on HP.

This is the link where I asked for help -

Hi donna. I have just read your comment regarding your nomination for this weeks hub nugget and your request to close your account with hub pages. It caught my eye as I am also a nominee this week but in a different catagory. I haven´t yet followed the link you set up so haven´t read what was written to you. You clearly are very very upset by the comment you received, but please reconsider leaving hub pages because of one insensitive and hurtful comment. Obviously you have great talent to have been selected for the hub nugget award and you should take note of this and all your other achievements and not some possibly "jealous" comment. Leaving hub pages is giving into bullying and non of us should ever do that. I am sure you will get loads of support when people read of your experience and I do hope you listen to this and not the "ONE" negative and rude response.

bac2basics profile image

bac2basics 4 years ago from Spain

Hi donna. I have just responded to your comment. However I then followed your link and read the response that upset you so much. After reading it ( and I´m sorry I didn´t read it before I wrote to you) I think maybe you misunderstood what was being said. It seems like it wasn´t a personal criticism of your work but rather someone trying to help you with your problem with the adsense account and other issues you are facing.

I know where you are coming from with the adsense problems as I am having exactly the same problem and don´t seem able to sort it out either.

I must appologise to the writer I criticised before I read what was going on. But I do think they were just really trying to help you and not to be critical.

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

I am sorry to hear you are leaving HP. I enjoyed your writing very much, and there is no doubt you are very talented.

I was most fortunate to have a sister-hubber who was able to guide me through the AdSense maze. The whole process can be extremely confusing and frustrating to have to a novice. I have programmed my own websites the old-fashioned way in an HTML editor, and still needed step-by-step guidance.

The advice you were given is in no way a slight on your abilities either as a writer or as an online presence - though I would have been upset by the "savvy enough" comment, too. Some of us can be plain-spoken at times, and it can ruffle some feathers. I didn't find the remarks "nasty and hateful," (and I have received some of those) but then her comments weren't directed at me.

Just so you know, I picked up a lot from reading other forum posts - I read everything on anything remotely like my own questions, and learned a lot - but I still wouldn't have made it without mentors.

Sorry to see you leave - all the best with your writing!

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

Hi, bac2basics - I checked out the thread. The one comment would have been a pride-stinger for sure, but I didn't find it rude. I am sorry to see a good writer leave because of a misunderstanding. The commentor did apologise.

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

bac2basics, I'm glad you went back to read the whole thread. It is always sad and unnecessary to lose good writers because of a misunderstanding. I hope both apologies are accepted and our new writer stays, but time will tell.

Whoop di doo dah....Redelf, Thankyou so much for letting me know I won the hub nugget..I was gob smacked last night when I logged on and read your email...thankyou so much for even thinking my story good enough to be put forward. wow, still can´t believe it. Oh and thanks also to you and Ripplemaker for sorting me out with the voting link...next on the agenda, the adsense programme because I´m going round and round with that one and getting nowhere !!! I am having exactly the same problem reapplying as donna had.It is really frustrating.

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

So glad you are enjoying HP. Always nice to find another good, new writer.

As for AdSense, I was approved quickly because I had another website already for a while before starting here. Sometimes the help in the forums is not so helpful. Try emailing HP staff for help first to see if they can help. It can take a few days to get a reply, but it is best to wait til you hear from them first. Then email someone else for step by step instructions if you are still stuck :)

Hi Red. Many thanks once again for your help. I have posted a thankyou and also a dedication to our daughter ( my step daughter) Wendy who is featured in that story. The day after I was notified that I had been selected for the hub nugget contest I recieved the unbelievable news that she had passed away suddenly and without warning. The day after I won the award I learned she had suffered a bleed in the brain. She was only 40 years old, left 3 young children behind and had just sent out wedding invitations as she and her long time boyfriend were planning to marry soon. I know she would have been chuffed to bits I was writing and would have said " You go for it Annie, good on yer" She was a lovely person, so I think a dedication to her is well in order don´t you ?

RedElf profile image

RedElf 4 years ago from Canada Author

I agree - it's a marvelous dedication! I am so very saddened to hear of your loss. Wendy sounded like a wonderful woman, and my heart goes out to her family and yours.

I am sure she would have been thrilled for your win, and I, too, hope you will keep on writing!

Great fun this is my favorite Red Elf (the blue, green, and yellow are just not the same elves) and this hub jamboree of famous names and real people reminds me of another great hub writer (like yourself) Martie Coetser who has written a satirical soap opera parody which I would highly recommend ......and yes the writing of the epi-man is never boring that's for sure - lol - one could never accuse me of that! sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 3:54pm
