Do You Think Your Hub Comments are Being Ignored?

Have you ever felt like you were being ignored by another HubPages' hubber?

You read their hub, you found it interesting enough to comment on it, but you do not see your comment.

The hubber hasn’t approved it.

You might be thinking, “Gee, I didn’t think my comment was rude or over-the-top. Why isn’t the hubber approving it right away?”

Maybe you think, “Oh, I offended the hubber with my comment and the hubber is ignoring me or has deleted my comment.”

I would be willing to bet it is neither. HubPages is a wonderful online community. There has to be a reason for the majority.

A Couple of Reasons a Comment Might Not Appear Accepted Immediately

I have had offensive comments and comments that sat for a bit before I approved them. It didn't have anything to do with the person who left the comment. As a matter of fact in most cases, I approve all comments whether I agree with them or not. I want all sides to be represented on an issue. Argument is not my favorite form, but I know it happens. Sometimes I am surprised because argument and debate weren't intended on my part.

Timing is the main cause of not approving the comment right away. Life happens.

Why a Comment Might Not Be Accepted

I did say "in most cases." The only reason I would not accept a comment is if it is spam, if it is someone who has left a link and is trying to promote themselves, or if the comment is so inflammatory and is starting to go off topic.

Admittedly, in the past, I have accepted some of these comments with links, but I have stopped. I have even received e-mails from people asking why their comment didn’t appear. If it is grossly self-promotion on my hub, I am not going to accept it. I do e-mail the person to give my reason, which, by the way, isn't a HubPage rule - just one of courtesy. Backling in comments is against HubPage rules.

Writing online, I have found that spam has made its way into comments. I just delete it.

Also, since we are writing online and it is 24/7 around the world, there have been comments made in broken English. If I can understand it, I accept it and respond to it.

Possible Reasons Comments May Not Appear to Be Accepted

You love that hub and the comment you made on it. Maybe you gave some constructive criticism, advice, or an opposing argument. Maybe you left praise or a kind “thank you.” Maybe you loaded it with keywords so it would benefit the hubber. You are so anxious to have the author respond, yet it doesn't seem to be happening...

Some reasons a comment may not appear immediately:

  • The hubber walked away from the computer.
  • The hubber has so many comments to get through and some are left "unapproved" for fear of forgetting about getting to them.
  • The hubber answered the phone.
  • The hubber decided to play with the dog.
  • The hubber’s children came in.
  • The hubber needed to go to bed.
  • The dog just chased the cat throughout the house, leaving a path of destruction.
  • It was time to eat.
  • The hubber stopped to watch the news.
  • The hubber’s jealous spouse gave that look. You know the one, “You are at the computer ALL the time.” Pressure sets in and the hubber gets up to spend some quality time with family.
  • The hubber wants to think about a response before allowing the comment. This is a good thing.
  • The electricity went out.
  • The modem stopped working.
  • The hubber spilled coffee on the keyboard and the computer stopped running.
  • The dreaded blue screen pops up and the computer shuts down.
  • Groceries need to be bought.
  • A friend drops in.
  • The hubber’s bladder is about to explode.
  • A marathon of Pawn Stars is on the History Channel.
  • The dog got tired of waiting and hiked his leg on the hubber.
  • The hubber needed to take a break.

Advice: Patience is a Virtue

We are all so busy trying to write hubs and just living life with all its little details. Don't be offended if you do not see your comment pop up right away. There is probably a good reason.

Also, some hubbers dedicate a certain amount of time to comments, writing hubs, revising hubs, etc. because they are organized.

Another factor to consider is that the hubber is answering comments a few at a time in order for the hub to go back into the feed. Each time a hub receives an “allowed comment,” it goes into the hubber's feed so followers get more chances to see the hub.

Just don't take it personally, even if it is a day or more before your comment pops up. There is probably a good reason for it. Don't jump to the conclusion that the hubber doesn't like your comment. With me, as with most of us, it is not any one thing that keeps us from getting to comments, it is a variety of things,

I love getting comments and responding to them, so keep commenting.

How to Find Your Spam Folder

  • Go to "My Account" and click on "Comments" (on left)
  • Look at the two options, "Sort by" and "Filter"
  • Click on down arrow next to "Filter"
  • You will see "Unmoderated," "Approved," "Denied," and "Spam"
  • Click on "Spam"
  • Voila - you will see all comments that did not make it to your "Comments" feed

A big THANK YOU to MartieCoester!!

Spam Alert Update: How to Check Your Spam Folder

Always look to other hubbers for help. I did not even know we had a spam folder until MartieCoester gave me directions to find the folder (below in comments and posted to the side). I never dreamed that hubbers would fall into a spam folder. It makes sense that an outside comment might. I followed Martie's directions and see I have SEVERAL comments that I have never seen that have gone into the spam folder. I am going to go add each of them. Some have been there for over a year - I feel so bad. So, don't be surprised if you don't get a response. It might have gone to the spam folder and the hubber (like me) may not know how to get to it. If it is not in the spam folder, the reasons above may be the cause. Always give the benefit of the doubt.

HAPPY HUBBING!!

I have found that authors delete comments to weed out "trolls", people who leave inflammatory remarks, go off topic, or to elicit an emotion response from other participants or the author.

In two years on Hp I've maybe disapproved 3 or 4 comments. And that was because the person was mentally challenged and I didn't want them to embarrass themselves. Those are some humorous reasons comments might not be accepted. Your right about letting them go on the feed for a while . If someone takes the time to comment then they should have a chance at other HPers seeing their replies on feed, not over long but for a bit at least.

I think it is the height of rudeness when people don't answer their comments, of course things can be innocently over-looked at times, but there are a few who make it a general habit. Why do they have them open to begin with?! Once checked spam comments and was surprised to see some there that shouldn't have been- comments that didn't get answered cause I didn't know about them. Check spam comments regularly now, though.

I don't think I have had anyone complain that I was ignoring them. I might take a few hours to get back to them, but they seem to understand that. I have only refused to comment twice, and those were two comments that just basically gave me their HP profile....no comment on my hub at all, just spreading their love. LOL I chose to ignore them.

Good points, Susan!

Ahhh! Thank you!

I do sometimes have people that will leave a couple of comments thinking I ignored them or that it didn't post. I do not always check my comments every single day:). I write a blog too so I tend to only pay attention to one or the other each day...I know some hubbers take days to respond to comments so it never bothers me. I know they will get to it when they have a hot second:)

Hi Flacoinohio, there have been times I wanted to delete an opposing argument, but I don't because we have freedom of speech. I want to see both sides whether I agree or not. Only if it is extremely inflammatory, will I consider deleting it. I have contacted the hubber to let the person know why I deleted it, though.

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Alastar, I have disapproved a few comments, but it has to be extreme for that to happen.

I agree that if a person leaves a comment, they deserve a response. I felt so bad when I was going through checking my hubs and found a comment that was left 6 months before. I must have approved it, and forgotten. I went ahead and responded to it, but I was embarrassed.

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Hey Kelly! I pretty much work the same way. I try to get to everyone, but I am not always timely. Sometimes I have gotten a comment within the same day asking, "Where is my comment?" I always feel bad when that happens, but it can't always be helped. I never neglect anyone on purpose.

Excellent hub! I try my best to approve and answer all of my comments, but sometimes when I have several writing assignments I fall behind. So far I have only had to remove one comment from a "spammer" with a bad attitude.

I am very happy that the other comments I have received have all been well thought-out comments that open up the opportunity for discussions.

Voting this hub and sharing. It will be very helpful to those just starting out on HP.

Fun way of expressing your perspective, sholland10. :0)

It is true, I need to take time off from being online once in a while, so it may be a day or two before I know that there is a comment on one of my hubs, especially an older one. I do my best to respond because I appreciate the time it takes to think of and leave a response. I check more often when I first publish a hub.

Iin turn, I do my best to leave encouraging comments on the pages of my fellow hubbers, and give them the time and space to respond.

Happy New Year!

All good points. I usually accept comments within a short time period, but there have been a couple times I was away or whatever, and I do so as soon as I return. It is life, and everyone just has to accept that time and responsibilities are different for all of us.

Great advice, Susan. I enjoy commenting on hubs; most hub writers respond; but I don't expect an answer from some hubbers and that is also fine. I am guilty of not being able to respond on a timely basis. My work schedule limits my writing online, social media and Hubpage community action as this time. Hopefully, it will improve later this year.

Hi Rebecca, I have to admit, I try to get to everyone who comments, but sometimes I don't make it to all. It is kind of the same philosophy with the comments, I might forget or it may be someone who has only commented a few times and I don't get to them in a timely manner. I get overwhelmed and forget. It isn't intentional, though. I have always feared I have offended someone this way. You make a good point. :-)

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Kevin, do you mean "just you" who can't get to comments or "just you" who feels like people don't get to your comments? I think when I was a new hubber, it bothered me if my comment didn't get a response. Now that I know many people in the community, I realize we are a busy group. I just don't get offended if my comment doesn't get a response. I love when it does, but understand when it doesn't. :-)

sholland10 profile image

Thanks, Sharkey! I love it when a comment promotes discussion. Sometimes, I leave a comment of appreciation and don't expect a response - I usually get one, but it is okay when I don't.

Even if a hubber just leaves a "thank you," I try to leave a "you're welcome." I want the hubber to know I acknowledge and appreciate them for dropping by. :-)

Good advice. I don't always check back on comments I leave but if it's an interesting hub I will go back and look to see what new comments are on there. I have had my own comment skipped over. I always wonder why some hubbers make it a habit of doing that. I don't think I make crazy comments. Sometimes it does take hubbers days to ok comments and I understand that it happens to me if we're out of town or company around. Voted up.

Hi Mary! I love getting comments, too! I am not sure I understand what you mean by clicking on "moderate my own comments." Does that mean our responses to our comments go to spam? Thanks for bringing this up. :-)

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Hi Seafarer Mama! I sometimes have to take some time off, too, for a variety of reasons. I do click on "Comments" on my statistics pages. It is the new hubs I have the most trouble keeping up with. But, what a wonderful feeling to see those comments. If I have a comment on an older hub, I try to respond asap or leave it in the comments unapproved until I can get to it because I fear forgetting.

I also believe as you do. If someone takes time to comment, I want to take time to respond - plus, I love to talk and build relationships. It is also so important to try to go read and leave a nice comment on others' work. :-)

Happy New Year to you, too! :-)

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

I agree, Mark. Same with me, I try to get to the comments as soon as I can. Sometimes that means spreading them out. It is easy to remember new hub comments, but those occasional older hubs are harder to remember if I have approved it and not been able to respond right away.

Hi Moonlake! I have had my comments overlooked, too. Or, maybe the hubber just didn't have a response for it. I think both are okay. I understand "busy" and "priority." We can only do what we can do. I just hate it when I get a message that someone thinks I intentionally haven't approved because that is not the case. :-)

Sadly, I'm only able to visit hubs about once a week nowadays but I avoid this problem by setting my comments to automatically accept. I can always remove comments I don't like. In about four years, I've maybe removed 3-4 comments, so that hasn't been an issue with me. I prefer that my commenters get to see their comment right away. I also do enough comments at a sitting, that I don't worry whether my comments are being approved -- eventually they will be. Voting this Up and Useful.

sholland10 profile image

ALocsin! I have missed you and seeing your comments around the site. I knew you must be really busy because you are great about leaving good comments. You know, it has been so long since I have set up how the comments are accepted that I had forgotten we have the automatic choice. Hmmm... I will give that one some thought. I have only refused a few comments over time, too, so that might be the way to go.

Thanks so much for dropping by! :-)

Really great advice and information, especially for newcomers. In some cases, you really do need to be patient. And I still (have always) had a problem with those who do not respond when I leave a comment on the hub. To me it is the appropriate thing to do. More recently, people that I know do not ever respond to comments on their hub - I tend to avoid them. It's not good for their total views.

fpherj48 profile image

Susan, I'm very glad you brought this up and gave a very rational opinion and some wonderful things to consider. I do try my best to respond to any and all comments. I too, accept 99%, with the possible exception, of the reasons you have mentioned. I would think that this is the case for the vast majority of hubbers.

Hopefully, your hub will bring more awareness and we'll all be a bit more vigilant about this. I also believe that with busy real lives, this may be done by pure oversight.

In any event, you've done a Public Hub Service! Thanks, Susan...UP+++

sholland10 profile image

Thanks, Sharyn! I always look forward to a response for comments I have placed on other hubs, too, and sometimes they never come. I think our comments help with the Google search. If I am on top of my game, I try to add some relate keywords in my comments to others to help them out, so I think it might be harmful to them if they don't respond, too. Plus, people may be deterred from coming back.

I love getting comments, and if at all possible, I try to respond to all of them, either individually or collectively. I feel if someone honored me by reading my hub and commenting, the least I can do is respond - which I enjoy. As you can see here, I am going on and on. LOL Plus, you are great about responding. I never worry if I don't see my comment pop up in a set time frame. I know writers are busy people who are spread thin. :-)

Hi Paula! I agree. I think the majority of hubbers do try to respond to comments, and I don't get spun up if I don't see my comment show up for awhile. Writers are busy people. As I said to Sharyn above, we are spread thin trying to write and live life so we have something to write about.

I know what you mean about oversight too. I found a comment on a hub that was around 6 months old. I missed it. I felt terrible, and I responded to it anyway. I hope the hubber saw it. Probably thought I was crazy... Oh well, sometimes I am. I admit it. LOL

Gus, I am responding to you because you just made me smile!! What a great idea to keep your comment... You need to copy and paste it, save it, (don't forget to replace the name - seems that some people get upset if you don't remember their name sometimes...) then just paste it into the hub's comment after everyone has said what needs to be said. Lots better than, "Ditto, ditto, ditto, etc." LOL Thanks for the smile! :-D

Oh yeah, I HATE that. I mean, if I took the time to read and comment on their hub (which makes them money), then is it too much for them to at least acknowledge that in some little way? I mean, it's not that I feel ENTITLED to that, and there's so many spammy people on HP nowadays. I get that, but some people really get an attitude towards their followers, even the "good" ones.

The worst is those hubbers who only comment back on their friends' comments. When I first started, I really liked one of the first hubs I read and I followed her and I left a long comment about how much I liked it and all that. This girl had many other comments too, and she took the time to comment back to everybody else -- but she skipped mine.

I thought it might have been an oversight, but she did the same thing to me on 2 other hubs I commented on. Seriously? LOL whatever.

What I find more disturbing about comments is that when there are a lot of comments, the viewers don't read the comments. That includes me at times, so my problem is that without reading all the comments you don't really get an understanding about the hub.

The hub authors probably read all the comments to their hubs, but what is the conclusion made from the hub and its comments?

I engage in more of the political category hubs, and of course there is a lot of different opinions. Many of the opinions go off on a tangent, so it is difficult to make sense of the hub when factoring in the comments.

As the thread of comments gets really long, sometimes longer than the hub itself, the impact of the hub is unknown.

I am part of these problems, but this is my opinion on the comments.

At a certain point, the hub needs to be revised to consolidate any relevant information, and the comments cleared, or a new hub should be written that extends the original hub.

Just a thought....

Thanks

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Hi IB Radmasters! I am guilty of not reading all the comments on hubs I have commented on if there is a long string. I am sure the hubs over controversial issues have great discussion. I have written a couple of hubs about Christian behavior and there have been many comments and some long enough to be hubs. I addressed each comment, even the ones that went off on tangents. I tried to pull the conversation back around to the hub's content. Some follow the comments, some do not. I follow hub comments of this nature. But, on the whole, many of my comments are based on the hub and not the comments, unless I feel the need to back up a hubber.

Thanks for your insight and opinion. :-)

I did a hub on answers and forums, as they magnify my opinion on hub comments. Basically, they are like many people in the same room making comments at the same time. I don't understand it, I don't know who is putting it all together, it is certainly not me.

I think it is just that the people leaving the comments are commenting on the hubs, rather than the comments. I understand that. :-) I hope I am not misunderstanding your comment.

Hi AHorseBack! Sorry, I was ignoring your comment... LOL JUST KIDDING!! I wasn't ignoring you. I was doing several of the things I have on my list above!

I am not sure any of us can avoid a comment or a few comments sitting for awhile. If some are able to stay on top of them, that is great. I just don't happen to be one of them. I just hate when someone takes it personally. I would never hurt anyone's feelings. Even if I didn't agree with the person, I would say so.

Thanks for dropping by and following me! Don't get upset if you don't hear from on a comment... LOL :-)

Hi Sholland, for some reason I've missed your reply on my comment. When you go to your comments, via your account, you will see 2 options "Sort by (date or hub)" and "Filter". The latter contains your unmoderated, approved, denied and spam comments. Just click on 'spam' and see what's in there.

Oh my gosh, Martie!! I have never checked the filtered comments. I just did and I have comments from a year ago. There is some spam, but there are several hubbers with comments, too. I feel so bad. I will need to address these as soon as possible. I am also going to place your instructions in the hub - if that is all right with you? Thank you so much for explaining.

You are welcome, sholland. Maybe you can improve the wording of the instruction: How to find your spam folder (and other folders) in HubPages.

I would have never found mine if someone did not tell me how. And now I can't even remember who it was!

Take care!

Susan, this is a useful hub. Many hubbers especially the newbies do feel this way. You have a great job in mentioning the reasons for not finding a response to a comment made immediately.

I'd just like to add that those like me in India, might find the time difference too, a big factor in responding late. It's a 12.5 hours difference between here and the U.S. Also, someone who has a lot of comments to reply to, will take time to respond.

Good job! voted up and useful.

Rajan, thanks so much for bringing up those factors because I neglected to add the time difference between hubbers of different countries. And you are right about it taking time to respond when you have several comments stacked up. I like to try to personalize them, so it takes me a little while to get to all of them.

Thanks for dropping by and voting!! :-)

Ha! Loved your list of reasons! I'm pretty new to HubPages, and I didn't even realize that I had to approve comments at first. So ignorance is definitely a possible reason.

Hi LuckyWriter! I have been exactly where you are now. I remember going to each hub and checking. I didn't realize there was a tab on MY ACCOUNT on the left that stated COMMENT... Uh, HELLOOO!! LOL If you need any help, let me know. There are lots of great hubbers who have written about their first year on HP's. All of us have had our difficulties and successes. It's fun to learn from each other, too. :-)

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Adding the same link to multiple comments that are left by the same person on HubPages also often renders the comment as spam. I've had first-hand experience with this. ;)

Hi Icmn! I can see why leaving a link over and over again could be spammy. I don't think we are supposed to leave links.

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Very helpful. I'm a new hubber and am struggling with some of the nuances of the technology. Thanks!

Welcome to HubPages, Larry! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I wasn't ignoring your comment! LOL I know what you mean about figuring out the technology. Hubbers will provide a wealth of information. You could probably search your problems on the site and find hubbers who have written about them. Good Luck!

Thanks for dropping by! :-)
