My HubPages Earnings and Progress for 2012

I often watch a lot of Adventure Time while writing for HP. | Source

My Story

I started out on HP in July of 2010, writing up a whopping total of 4 articles (please, hold your applause). Going back and reviewing my work today, I wasn't too pleased with my writing even though two of these articles proved to be a couple of my best ever, averaging around 300 views per month. I edited and revised my articles and moved on.

After being discouraged when I hadn't earned a single penny in a month (the joke was on me since I didn't had an AdSense account), I quit writing and left HubPages to start my small business. I started to get interested in making money online once more in August of 2011 when I was reading extensively on smartpassiveincome.com. At some point there was a mention of InfoBarrel, and i signed up with the interest of earning online. After staying with InfoBarrel for about a month and putting up about 10 articles (this time with an AdSense account), I saw a couple pennies flow in. My faith in earning online had been restored, but I felt as if there was something missing with InfoBarrel. Unnerved for some reason, I remembered HubPages.

In November of 2011 I came back to HubPages, learning about the new Ad Program. I immediately switched it on and added my AdSense account, and the next day I saw that I had earned .01 cents overnight. I was amazed! I decided to leave it for a week and see what else I would accumulate, happy to see that I was earning around .10 to .18 cents per day with my four old articles. It was then that I decided to try to make some extra passive income online with HubPages. In November, I increased my number of articles to 21 and took a two month break. Still, I saw earnings!

In my short amount of time back at HubPages (I write this as of Apr/1/2012), I can definitely say when I first signed up, I was taking this site for granted. I've grown a lot in the time I've been here and am not only happy with my earnings, but just even having the ability to earn online, and the community is wonderful and full of great people who have taught me so much! I plan on sticking around for much, much longer because of all of this.

For 2012, I have a couple goals: First of all, I'd like to increase my overall article count to 100. My ultimate goal for this year though would be to make enough money per month to help finance myself an almost-new car by January 2013 (around $200/month), but that's a longshot! We'll see how far I progress to this goal by the end of the year.

With all of that said (apologies for the book there), here is a month-to-month account of my HubPages earnings for 2012. I'll be updating this article at the end of every month, so check back! If you'd like to skip through all the reading and see just the figures, scroll to the bottom of this article.

January 2012

I wasn't active in January due to being burned out from all the articles I wrote back in November, but i still saw some earnings. With my 21 articles, I saw a total earning of $3.11 for the month of January. Not much, but I was happy!

February 2012

I pulled myself out of my slump and managed to publish 20 articles this month, bringing my total to 41. I was happy to see that my average earnings jumped from about .10 cents to about .25 cents per day. I finished out the month with a total earning of $8.66, more than double of what I earned in January. Woo!

March 2012

Wow! This month was really good for me. I only managed to publish 10 articles, bringing my grand total to 51 so far, but I hit a couple milestones for myself. First of all, I officially had 50 articles published. Second, I earned my first whole dollar in one day! Awesome! My average daily earnings jumped to about .40 cents per day, and I finished out the month with a total of $15.42 in earnings. I'm hoping that I can make $30 next month!

April 2012

Even though I didn't meet my goal of $30 in April, I did get an even better surprise when I logged onto HubPages near the end of April -- I was accepted into the HP Apprentice Program! Woohoo! I start in May, and I will keep the Apprentice Program earnings separate from my regular earnings (or I just wont include them at all) so I don't confuse anyone. Also, I hit my first payout ever this month and I finished out the month with a total earning of $28.71 and 61 articles in total. I'm expecting to see around $40 next month with 71 articles ;)

May 2012

I was so close to reaching my $40 goal for May! I managed to write 19 articles and received my first check of $63.63 from HP to my PayPal account. Felt great! I'm hoping for June that I can earn $50, which should be totally doable. The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it. I wont include that in the earnings table, though. Here's looking at another 5 months of fun with the AP!

June 2012

This month was a good month with the ad program and apprentice program! I managed to earn an extra $60 with AP, and around $45 otherwise in earnings. I've come across a new niche idea that I'm spending a lot of time on, so I will not be putting out many articles. This means I'll probably have to drop out of the AP, but it was a fun run and I recommend it to anyone!

July 2012

This month wasn't too great for the ad program. For a lot of us at HP, there's been some Google craziness, which is a huge part of the reason I haven't been around much; I've been working on my other side project which is going really well, and I think I'll unveil it here once it's finished. Otherwise, I only made like $27 this month, BUT I did manage to get my first sale from Amazon (I didn't have the account linked up right for almost a whole year but fixed it about a month or two ago). I managed to bring in $63.63 in Amazon sales alone from HP, and wow, blew my mind!

Good article. Very honest and forthcoming about leaving and coming back. I, too, am coming back. I'm breaking free of content mills.

Hub is so much more fun.

Hi Kay,

I'm glad that you shared your experience and increased earnings on HubPages! It's good to set goals...and I hope you get that car by the end of the year. ;-)

Good luck with that. I think setting small yet achievable goals is the key. I have set myself a personal challenge to write and publish 100 hubs in 100 days. I have been here 3 weeks and up to hub #30 or so. Its tough but worthwhile I am sure in the end.

Wow, thanks everyone for the encouraging words! :)

@WorkAtHomeMums, I've noticed a few days ago that you were embarking on that 100 hubs in 100 days challenge... I'm sure it'll turn out awesome for you in the end, especially since you've only been here for 3 weeks. I have no doubt that it'll shoot your earnings up fast!

@Turtlewoman, haha thank you! I am hoping so, too. Jeep Patriot, here I come! ;)

Hello,

I just started not to long ago and only created 2 hubs, but so far I've made $0.19. The problem I just don't know what to write about. I know there are so much stuff to write about. How do you come up with ideas and start writing articles

GDiBiase profile image

Nice hub, thanks for sharing. I hear you, my experience is something like you where I wrote for 4 months and then didn't write again until Jan of this year. But I am seeing earnings too.

peachpurple profile image

peachpurple 4 years ago from Home Sweet Home

I had the same problems as yours. I would try to write at least 2 or 3 hubs per month. My earnings never shoot up beyond $10. Do you do backlinks? Which would you recommend?

Voted Up!!

TheMagician profile image

TheMagician 4 years ago from Tampa, FL Author

@Keeranbri, the only advice I can give you is to write about what you know or what you find interesting... there's really no secret :)

@peachpurple, I actually don't do any backlinking -- I simply write my article, publish it, and call it a day. I'm sure backlinks or submitting my articles to sites like Reddit or Stumble Upon would help, but to be honest, I'm just lazy. I may get around to submitting one or two and seeing how that blows over. I'm not too knowledgeable on backlinks!

Hi Magician, hope you can create the magic you desire. What I liked most about your article is setting definite goals and working to achieve it. I have been making SMART goals too for the new year. I joined 3 years ago but life took me away from writing. However, this year I am able to give it the attention it requires. I have also grown in the last three years and might have something valuable to share with others. Let's see what 2012 will be like for me!

Great hub Magician! It's encouraging to see earnings of those just starting out and seeing how they've grown in a few short months. I find the stories of those who've been on HP much longer to be inspiring as well, but overwhelming too. Good luck on your journey! I hope to see a hub on how to buy a new car with HP earning in a year. :)

yes, it very exciting when I see a few cents. I only got 28 cents in my account right now, but I'm like "wow, I can really earn money if I keep hubbing" Although, I sometimes don't know what to write.

Great stats!

How did you get such a large jump from February to March?

TheMagician profile image

TheMagician 4 years ago from Tampa, FL Author

To be honest, I have no idea. I think it just LOOKS like a large jump since it's going from single to double digits by about $7, but I can't be sure. Most of the articles I published around then were education related or about Facebook, so maybe that had something to do with it :)

You have given me some faith! I have only been publishing for about 6 weeks and have 9 hubs so far. Sadly my time is very restricted with a number fo other jobs, but I really hope to be able to build a collection of helpful hubs by the end of the year. Even though I am earning very little at the moment, it is always steadily increasing. My first month with 4 hubs made 65cent, my second with the additional 5 hubs made $1.79. So hopefully if I keep working I will start seeing a better return.

Voted up and useful thanks

Great idea to share your hub earnings. It is encouraging to see your progress. I just started really focusing on and working my Hubpages account seriously two months ago. My earnings are as follows: $0.48 April, $3.44 May, and so far this month (4 days into it) I'm currently at $0.28 cents earned at this point for June. I've been doing more commenting on other peoples hubs than I have done working on my own here recently. I find that much easier than publishing my own, though I realize that I need to do both. This is an excellent hub. I'm voting up and sharing it!

I just signed up for a Hubpages account about three days ago now. I was unaware up until reading your Hub just a few minutes ago that I have to create an Ad Sense account in order to get paid. If I create an Ad Sense account (it's now pending), but have already written three or four Hubs, will I get paid for those Hubs that were written before my Ad Sense account is active? Thank you in advance!

TheMagician profile image

TheMagician 4 years ago from Tampa, FL Author

Felicity Anna, yes you will be paid for those Hubs as well, so don't worry about that. You get paid according to the impressions (views) on your articles through HP Ad Program, and clicks on Google Ads for Adsense (I don't personally rely on Adsense earnings, only HP Ads)

It's recommended to have a few articles published before signing up for Adsense so that they'll approve you faster. A lack of content may keep Google from approving you, but you can always reapply later if that's the case. Good luck!

@TheMagician I am sure you will agree that the best way to make money is to show up high in the search engines. If you place a vid from Youtube into your content you are getting link juice from Youtube. The higher the amount of people visiting your Hub or Youtube video the stronger they each become.

Youtube has a Pagerank of 9 and it is a "dofollow." It will help make your Hub show up higher in a Google search. Each URL has its own Pagerank so you initial URL with Youtube will have a Pagerank of 0. But with some coaxing and hard work it get a Pagerank of 3 fairly quickly.

Then build a few links to your Hubpages that are from authority sites. Start with Wordpress.com which has a Pagerank of 9 and is also dofollow. Point a link from Wordpress to your Hubpage. Thanks for your honest hub. Congratulations on being chosen for the apprentice program. Great job! I thought you had to earn 50.00 in one month or your earnings went away and you started from scratch?? Is that not the case?

Lisa

TheMagician profile image

@Lisas-thoughts101, oh God no! Whatever you earn you keep -- it's just that you don't get paid until you reach at least $50 for the month. If you earned $25 one month, the earnings will roll over to the next month so you'll need to earning another $25 to reach payout.

$39 from 80+ articles. Not bad.

Would you happen to know if Hubpages had disclosed how much revenue we can get from Adsense from the clicks that we get from the site?

I heard that Adsense normally gives out 68% in revenue to its publishers. I am curious to know how much cut Hubpages take (if there is any).

TheMagician profile image

TheMagician 4 years ago from Tampa, FL Author

@Johnsmitht, I'm not quite sure I understand the question, and if I did I don't know anything about HP's cut of Adsense. I do know that the HP Ad Program ads that show earn them 40% while you keep the other 60%. As for Adsense? Not a clue.

johnsmitht profile image

johnsmitht 4 years ago

Thanks for the response Author. I guess HP then takes 40% out of the 68% from the Adsense earnings.

I don't have any idea either how adsense really works on each hubs. Hubpages ad program however has daily stat so I know Ive got pennies everyday. How I wish I could increase it by at least 5 dollars daily... have to write more more hubs I guess.

Thanks so much for your accounting and breakdown of how it all went/and goes for you. I'm so encouraged, though I still only earn cents each day and nowhere near the dollar mark. Sometimes I wonder if it's the subjects I write about, but I can't seem to earn much more than 10-15 cents a day. It could be disheartening until I read an account like yours.

Hello

Great Hub!I signed up about 17 months ago but did not have the confidence or ideas at that point to write any hubs. It's really only over the last month that confidence and ideas regarding articles have come to me, and now I feel as though there is no looking back.

Good to hear that you have had earnings from this which continue and even increase each month.

I will hold your goal in mind and think of you as having the car of your dreams. It's everything that you want and more. Reach for the stars!

Many thanks

This is a great topic for a hub. I'm glad you're making earning progress. What do you think you did, in particular, to increase your earnings? I've had a similar experience in which I was disappointed by my lack of income at first, but now I'm quite happy with the results. Thanks for sharing!

I'm brand new to HP, so I especially thank you for your honesty in regards to the earnings. It's a realistic view of what I can expect. @Livingabroad, Thanks for the comment! I'll be slowing down considerably though soon, but I'll still be putting out at least 8 articles a month :)

Also, a good music playlist helps me write faster! Haha.

Very inspirational and i salute your comeback. I am also an owner of a blog and internet entrepreneur. There were a lot of comparison between hubpages and squidoo and i am fan of both. My main motive for hubs creation with respect to creating unique contents for my blog was only for creating good and high quality backlinks, but the way hubpages allow to share adsense revenue is not only effective for blog owners but also for them who do not have their own blog or business model. But, one question always strike my mind, is there anyone who is making at least 100$ per day via hubpages??

Encouraging article. I have come back to HP after a fairly long layoff and found that the over twenty articles (33 in total) I have written over the past month is already putting over $3 into my account every week. Am eager to reach the $50 mark and get paid.

The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it.

What I don't understand is this: If the HubPages staff knows enough about how to make money on HP to share it with those in the Apprentice Program, why don't they share it with all of us? Just asking.

Good luck to you and congrats on your success.

Awesome Hub! Yours is the first one I have read that really details each month's earnings. I too, began with Infobarrel, quickly got discouraged and found HubPages. I've never looked back. In fact, shortly after signing up, one of my hubs made Hub of the Day! Then I also got accepted into the Apprenticeship Program (this is month 1 for me!) so any tips on that would be very helpful!

Congrats to you, this is so inspiring! I hope I can get on a roll like you have.

Anything folks learn from the apprentice program would really be appreciated by the rest of us. I don't actually understand the concept of the program. You may be our only sources to the secrets of success - besides what is already written here almost daily.

Its good to see you being so successful with Hubpages! Just keep up the great work (like you always do) and things are sure going to come your way. Revising and updating older hubs is one of the HARDEST things to do on hubpages, I know...I neglect it all the time. Hopefully ill be driven at some point to update many of my old hubs.

Good for you! I am sure you will be able to meet your goals. This somewhat sounds like my story, I just published a hub today as a matter of fact after receiving notice that I had earned a whole 0.5cents...lol..it's a start. I was writing articles a year ago and becoming discouraged too because I wasn't earning but I have an active ad sense acct and I will start writing articles again and maybe updating some of the old ones and see where it takes me...can't hurt right?
