Our Hubs Got Stolen: BigEzine.com - The 'Biggest' Plagiarist!

Hubpages, a word that cannot be defined even by the unlimited permutations or combinations we can get from the entire 171,476 words in English language. It is such a vibrant community of friendly, congenial and some wonderful people – everyone loves it. However, today all of its members experienced a sad fact.

We, the hubbers, put a lot of honest and sincere efforts, whenever we create a hub. To write such high-quality, unique and well-researched articles often take hours to be written and published. However, plagiarism and copying the articles seem to be a comparatively easier task. www.bigezine.com, a new name in the article directory arena, has stolen all our hubs through the Hubpages and copy-pasted the efforts of us.

To put the salt on our wounds, they also have mentioned their EXPERT AUTHORS’ names, who have written all these articles – what were they thinking by the way? Even the old pirates had some rules to follow. But this www.bigezine.com does not seem to have any. Let us have a look at what their ‘About Us’ section tells their visitors (We will keep scrutinize it along the way as well)

BigEzine, in their 'About Us' Section, says:

Bigezine.com is a free article directory, with a huge collection of original articles posted by expert content writers as well as professional authors.

Excuse me! Did I just read ‘original articles’? We are professionals, no doubt about that. However, it would be nicer for these s***bags to take our permissions first!

Bigezine.com is a platform where any author can post articles on a wide variety of subjects. (and anyone can copy as well!)

We at bigezine believe that original, handcrafted content is not only the most enjoyable to write, but also the most useful for readers to discover, and the most likely to get shared with other people.

It was equally exciting – and shocking – to ‘discover’ our articles here, as it would have been for the readers!

Our Mission - as they say:

BigEzines endeavor is to become the best article directory on the web by providing the highest level of service to its authors, the best quality articles to its content publishers and the most pleasant reading experience to its readers.

Aahh, that's enough, ! I can’t take it anymore. Let’s go towards the copied articles’ section and to their URLs for the evidences.

Proof of Plagiarism and Copied Articles:

The BigEzine article directory copied the entire hubs, without taking any sort of permission from their original writers, neither did they acknowledge them. Following are the links to some of the copied hubs, which were written originally by the writers at Hubpages.com

realhousewife pays his regard to 'Pauline Reyes' by a sweet, adorable and beautiful message:

YES! You ARE a Sociopath!

1. Am I A Sociopath? Are You? Take The Quiz!

The original hub is written by our famous and beloved Hubber, 'realhousewife'.

Bigezine copied it under the name of 'Pauline Reyes' as the author. The URL is: http://health.bigezine.com/am-i-a-sociopath-are-you-take-the-quiz-48167.html

Fennelseed leaves a thought-provoking message for these plagiarists:

"Is there a reason why you feel the need to steal original work from another site. You have stolen my very personal poem (and photo, which still bears my profile name) and put your name to it as your own. You do not know the first thing about me or what this poem means to me. Your actions have hurt me more than you can possibly imagine. Please remove this and do not put your name to anything that doesn't belong to you. If you wish to write then write your own original content and do not touch work that doesn't belong to you."

A beautiful poem by our fellow hubber, Fennelseed, has also been stolen. The poem's name is:

Drowning in Self

There are numerous other hubs as well, which have been stolen by these plagiarists and scammers. I mentioned a couple of them only as evidences. I really do not understand the concept of an article directory, which have been filled with all the copied and plagiarised articles.

P.S: Because of our numerous complains, we may see the deletion process of these hubs and you may find the links broken.

As a writer, I will leave no stone unturned to raise my voice against this crime and fraud. This may or may not seem that big for many people, but for us, the writers on Hubpages, it is a serious offence. Only we can know the true efforts and hard-work that we put in our articles. And nobody, NOBODY has the right to steal from us.

ONE SENTENCE FOR EBIGZINE.COM:

If you keep riding our arses, we are eventually going to shit at you!

Reporting these Plagiarists:

We have been involved in various mediums and methods to report these plagiarists. I will be updating this section of the hub to add new methods for reporting. However, until that, read the following hub and learn 'How can you file a DMCA complaint'.

HOW TO FILE A DMCA COMPLAINT

I SERIOUSLY WISH THAT THESE IDIOTS COPY THIS HUB IN THEIR DIRECTORY AS WELL! Please ... You Sickos! Please!

UPDATES and ESSENTIAL INFORMATION:

1. This hub has been manually moderated, and all the ads have been disabled. Dear moderator, apart from doing this, I believe that it would be very helpful, kind and generous on behalf of you, if you & Hubpages start helping us more actively in this regard.

2. DO NOT unpublish any of your hub. Otherwise, it would become more difficult to claim what was once yours.

3. Many hubbers, alongside with me, have decided not to publish any new hubs, as they are being directly stolen as soon as they are getting published.

4. We are making important progress.

5. Those idiots have stolen this hub as well :P

Great info! Someone notified me today of seeing one of my hubs on their site. I did another hubber the same favor. They are passing off our work under their names. I have found 6 of my hubs so far and made DMCA complaints. Others are, too, so I'm hoping they'll take care of this. Everyone needs to file complaints. Great hub. I'm sharing this!

People please stop giving these people backlinks!

Hi Hunbbel, this is another tuff day in the life of a hubber. My suspicions are that the culprit is a member or past member of HP.

But my advise to all is to not create backlinks for these people. Every time we leave a link back to their site we promote them and we don't want that. So I would say name the site without the link. Just today alone they probably got over 50 backlinks without lifting a finger.

If it wasn't for a fellow hubber ,I would have never found out! I scanned all of my hubs in the site, and I found 11[eleven] of my articles and poetry in their site. The morons even have a picture of me in one of them!!

They even copied the links and my RSS feed. I try to get in contact with these people but after 2 hours I gave up.

I posted a comment in every single one of them. But at no avail. Then I registered and wrote an "article" about how that site was stealing content from hubpages, but the account was cancelled, of course. There is something very fish about.

There are so many Hubber recipes on that site including some of mine. It's funny to me there would be so many different people doing this.

Where this might hurt us. Our hubs are being copied word for word. What if it comes up that we're the ones doing the coping and not them. We end up with "contains violations." than what do we do?

Great article Hunbbel! Cardisa is right about the backlinks, folks, don't post them in the comments. I ran into this when I wrote about my HP biography being stolen-I had to avoid naming the person. Interesting theory, Cardisa, about it might being a *current* HP member doing this. Do you think it is this person's way of showing that this site, like any other, is vulnerable? I discovered that the hard way with my biography. This is disgusting, but yes, the only way to combat this without giving the copied articles traffic is to not post backlinks. You need to just list the title of your hub as a title-not a link.

Friends, I think we need to read the copyright on the bottom of all your hubs. Mine states "Copyright 2012 Hubpages and respective owners" We as aspiring authors feel that respective owners means us. Could it possibly mean that bigezine is a respective owner of our articles. I wrote the article "TOILET SEAT PERSONOMETER" March 21, 2012. The copied article with exactly the same names and pictures show copyrighted March 22, 2012. Perhaps we are writing for bigezine via Hubpages. Either way our hubscores reflect views, grammar and attention. I would like Hubpages to respond but they need to make money somehow so maybe this is how they do it. Look and see if the copyright is the same or later. If you have the earlier date you win hypothetically but not finally.

I have been following this. I would suggest however, than any links to that "other" site be broken up with a space or two in them. It's very hard to search the site. The best way it seems is to go through pages and pages of articles on a particular topic. Someone found one of mine (today's Hub of the Day of all things) but I didn't see any others of mine. I did see many that clearly are from Hubpages and am emailing the authors of those I recognize. Have heard that some hubbers have been in contact with the web hosting company. They've asked that we email copies of any complaints to the web host, too, at abuse@softlayer.com. Hopefully the site will be shut down soon.

This is the thing I am wondering about...Poohgranma posted a comment on one of my poems on Hubpages that that particular piece was on another site and gave me the link. I went to that link and there it was. I started checking out this site. There are 50 pages of articles on the bottom of the "Home" page, along with an extensive list of topic categories, and each category has or appears to have 50 pages of articles. I went through all 50 pages of the home page and found another of my poems credited to a different person., but did not find the first one. So I went back to my Hubpage, and looked at the link again. According to the link, it is in "educational" ...so I went through all 50 pages of the educational section and it was not there....so I went back again to the link on Hubpages and it takes me right there...this is a really weird, shady site! One last thing, I discovered a video promoting this site on YouTube...I watched it, gave it a thumbs down and filled out a form letting YouTube know what Bigezine is up to, requesting the video be pulled...

I went through and found quite a few articles by hubbers here that I follow. I have yet to find one of my hubs on their site, but that's not to say they haven't done it.

I did notice however, that if I clicked on an author's name more than once, the date that author joined changes. One of them joined on 4/2/2012, I clicked on their name again and the join date was 2/1/2012, clicked again and the date was 9/10/2011. The author's name is John McNulty. There is something really fishy going on, and why would the purposefully steal the hubpages apprenticeship article when they know that is written by hubpages. I mean come on are they really this stupid? Something just isn't adding up.

I have discovered an easy way to check if you hubs are there. Click on one of the categories at the top of the page and this will give you a search box. Enter part of your title in that box, or all of it, and then search. If it is on there it finds it. It is much easier than looking at all the entries.

Please delete this Hub as soon as possible!

You are giving this site enormous free publicity AND free backlinks - that's the worst thing you could possibly do.

The way to beat this site is to submit a complaint through Google Webmaster tools. Publicising it is only playing into his hands.

Good morning friends!

I have read ALL THE COMMENTS (Literally! Each & Everyone so far) though I won't be able to reply everyone individually. Therefore, I am going to highlight all the important replies and summarize the thing.

Hunbbel Meer profile image

1. Ok, I agree that we should not give them any more backlinks. However, a few of them were really necessary to prove our point of view, as they served as an evidence. So, no more backlinks. Put spaces between the links (to bigezine) to break the URL. Okay friends?

2. I AM sad that hubpages hasn't really supported as the way it should have been. Given said that, I still love it. It is one of the most wonderful community here, BUT the website itself should have participated more.

3. All the authors there at BigEzine are fake, and have different identities with different statistics. That's for sure.

4. Thundermama: You are new to Hubpages, but I can assure that you won't find any better community than this, anywhere. These things are quite common in the online writing world, but see, how we are standing in the unity here. So, I can only request you not to get despaired. The brighter days are ahead, my friend! :)

4. NO! For right now, we SHOULD NOT WRITE ANY MORE HUBS! This is for the Hubpages website as well. They should first protect our rights and make appropriate steps and actions. Only after that, we are going to publish more hubs. I have many written and finished hubs, but I am not going to publish them until that.

5. @TheFridge: That is not the case. Even according to the Hubpages TOS, all the rights for the published Hubs belong to us, the authors. Even Hubpages does not have the right to publish them anywhere else without our permission.

6. SubRon7: I can still do that, my dear friend ;) HAHA!

7. Apologies to all, Cindy Murdoch first introduced me to this problem, and I forgot to mention her name in the hub (I Guess!) So sorry, Sorry Cindy! :(

8. To all the poets: I can understand your feelings. A Poem is always closer to the writer's heart.

9. I am not going to delete this hub. I know it is publicizing, but still, someone has to bring the word out. As much as we call for their head, it would be great to shut them down.

10. Some important links that are shared by our fellow hubbers:

@hunbell meer, Very well said. Thanks for summarizing this for us. I do know that the owner of the site has removed the video from youtube. I posted a complaint to hubpages about this with DMCA complaint in the subject line as well as writing the authors, in which I figured were fake. I am not going to write anymore Hubs until Hubpages does something, they should back us up if they don't want to lose Hubbers

Daughter Of Maat profile image

Daughter Of Maat 4 years ago from Rural Central Florida

I agree you shouldn't remove the hub, you may want to think about removing the links in the hub and just typing them out with spaces, that way the link is still there for us to use if we need to, but the thieves don't get a backlink from your hub. Just a thought :D

I'm glad you posted this hub however, the hub they stole from me has pictures of my daughter in it, and she's underage, only 5. I'm completely outraged, but I would not have known about it had you not posted this, so thank you!

I, too, will "go on strike" and will only publish new hubs once this is taken care of completely.

@Suebee62: Obviously. When Hubpages do not allow us to plagiarise someone else's content, then it should have been equally active, when the same thing happened to us. I am not going to publish any more hubs, and will urge my fellow hubbers to do the same.

@DaugherofMaat: Dear, I saw your previous comment, and believe me, I was totally disgusted by hearing about your daughter's photograph. These things are close to our hearts, but these scumb*gs do not seem to understand that. I really hope that they receive the shit they deserve.

@LaThing: Do not be despaired. Everything is going to be okay. Regarding the word of mouth about this fake website, I am onto it ;)

Oops, did I repeat myself? I'm sorry! lol, I'm blinded by anger!

What I just happened to notice, and I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but the hubpages filter has not caught the duplicated content. Just adding not saying. Playing there a bit I noticed there are no links. The only links I noticed stay inside the domain. Only one add I saw and no link from it goes anywhere. At this point, and I'm looking further and calling a friend.

It appears to be a fishing site per se for email addresses. Or, looking to build a data base for an ezine email business of some sort. Do not be surprised if you discovers articles of yours used for that too, and you will never, ever discover it searching on the web. It is email based.

It may be an elaborate gaming system of some sort using authors searching there for horsepower. If you type the name in Google it doesn't exist. When typing in the name mentioned in this article at Google, at least for my browser at home and work, and work has more sophisticated security to some degree the first article is for weight gain. the second this article. the third a blogspot article about ezines. the fourth article a dailymotion article on it as an 'article directory' No where in my short explorations does it say 'join' only register. And, notice the terms of use is a 'false' Captcha a boogie man gotcha thingy.

Yes, I am not happy at seeing my article there without my permission. Let me ask a silly question. If you wanted a domain name to ranked extremely high 'fast' how would you do it? Remember it is an international market place not an 'American' market place. The add is KOOVS an online store based in India. I see no other add. And, again the add is not 'hot' with a link.

I see the site as bait. Hubpages and other publishing sites are the fish. What the purpose is 'who knows.' What I do know from the little I have read - Wired for instance on gaming for human power to accomplish monumental tasks in a short period of time, is every time a hubber goes there they know. Every time a hubber searches there they know. Every time someone registers, leaves a comment or take an action your email address is required. If you simply go there they win the game - check mate.

Probably the best thing we could do is to write about how they are stealing all the content. Without giving any links of course!! This way, when people find it, they will see all the "stolen posts", and talking about how they are all stolen from Hub Pages. You can't stop them, but we could hurt them. Just an idea.

This cheap theft of others works is so prevalent that I really don't see how we can survive as creative people who share for much longer.

They thrive through their abuse of the very freedoms that allow them to exist.

Should I spend my precious time being a Cop, or should I withhold my better works?

Thanks for this. I checked and three of my articles have been stolen, ironically all of them about copyright issues and image ownership.

Many thanks for advice from those commenting too, esp the link to email details for BigEzine, and also I recommend following the DMCA Hub that Hunbbel has included at the bottom of his article, as there is useful wording there.

I've emailed BigEzine, copied in copyright@hubpages.com, and also abuse@softlayer.com as suggested by Deborah N above.

I've decided not to comment/contact the "Authors" directly as I'd rather they were disciplined by BigEzine first and see what happens. Outrageous!

Thanks to Hunbbel and everyone for the push to challenge this.

What kind of idiots are they! How can that site permit their users to publish copied content. Ridiculous! OK, I'm awake. Did some snooping and thought I would share some stuff.

From: The Money Making Idea February 10, 2012

How To Deal With Content Theft

Your first course of action is to always attempt to contact the site owner and request that the content be removed within 48 hours. This will normally accomplish the end result you are looking for as most webmasters just need to be informed.

If after you contact them and no action has been taken within 48hours, contact the site’s ISP-Host and ask them to enforce their AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). This information can usually be found by doing a WHOIS lookup on the domain name.

The Berne Copyright Convention states that as soon as you publish an article on your blog or website it is automatically copyrighted and the publisher is the copyright holder. So based on the information from the Berne Copyright you don’t need to add anything to your work because the fact that you published it protects it. If you would prefer to add something you can simply add the copyright symbol , your name and the year the work was published.

http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p08_be...

Also, that author brings up the point - what about duplicate content and how long before Google - Panda reacts.

TIMETRAVELER2 profile image

TIMETRAVELER2 4 years ago

It would seem to me that the big search engines would catch on to the "duplicated" articles, see a pattern and shut them down. Contacting Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. to let them know about what's going on might help tremendously.

I had articles stolen when I wrote for another site. However, I was able to contact them (they were in Egypt) and got them to remove my articles. When a site is out of the US it's very difficult to get them to do anything via a DMCA complaint. I noticed they had NO contact information (address, phone, etc.) other than an email, which apparently they are ignoring.

Clearly BigEzine knows what they're doing and are doing it on purpose. Stopping them will be difficult if the big boys don'tget involved.

Using the information Hunbbel put at the end of his hub, I just emailed formal DMCA complaints to BigEzine.com. Also notified YouTube of BigEzine's copyright infringements and they removed BigEzine's promotional video from YouTube. I also sent a letter to Hubpages.com, which I am sure alot of folks have done and let them know I won't be publishing any new hubs until this is dealt with. I tried to send a copy of the complaint to www.abuse.softlayer.com and www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dmca/notic as was suggested but the emails would not go through. The reason stated was there was something wrong with the adresses??? I tried 3 different times in every way I could think of. So I have done all I know to do. I'm a bit insulted that not one of my 200 hubs was deemed worthy enough to duplice :o

On a more serious note, it's a fairly easy matter to see who is behind a website by putting the website address here:

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

It was run by some guys from New Delhi, India, whose many previous websites had been banned by their service provider. They've since hidden under a privacy website called www.protecteddomainservices.com.

You can contact Protected Domain about your stolen content at compliance@protecteddomainservices.com.

One of the other hubbers did write protecteddommain who gave her this address for the Indian guys service provider.

SoftLayer Technologies, Inc

They are in Dallas. You can try contacting them as well.

As many in comments have already suggested, the best course of action right now is to email SoftLayer at abuse@softlayer.com, with the details of the theft. I saw alot of hub page writers there and I didn't even look through the whole site! I also went to the catagory 'tutorials' and the first page up featured all hub page articles mostly on subjects like 'how to improve your hubbing' and things like that. Oh yes this very hub I am commenting on was there too!! can you believe it! I was wondering if everyone should file a complaint or only those hubbers whose articles were STOLEN!!!!

Rosemay50 profile image

What I have noticed is that if you type the hub title into Google or most of the big search engines only the Hubpage article is found, nothing by this site.

I will certainly not be publishing anything new until this is sorted out.

If anyone wishes to continue to publish as Born2care2001 suggests, as they are copying the whole hub with no alterations, why not ad a paragraph "If you are reading this on bigezine then this article has been stolen" or something like that.

I just received an email back from hubpages and here's what it said to do:

"The most effective thing to do is in this case have each Hubber file a DMCA complaint with the site in question.

Please see our Learning Center entry on how to format a DMCA complaint: https://hubpageshelp.com/promotion/Learning-Center...

and use their form here: http:// bigezine. com /contact/

Also, email the complaint to the person who registered the domain bigezine.com: solanki8484@yahoo.com"

I have done all this, so I guess we just wait and see. Although I'm afraid to publish any new content.

I also just received a VERY helpful email from the company that provides protection services to the website. I'm posting the email here in full

"Hello,

Thank you for contacting Protected Domain Services concerning bigezine.com. Protected domain services is not the owner, formally

referred to as the registrant, of this domain. When a registrant

purchases a domain, the governing authority that oversees domain names

(the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or "ICANN")

requires that the individual provide valid contact details for the

domain. These contact details are indexed in a publicly available

registry and search-able through "whois queries". You can perform a whois query on this domain through a variety of sites, including

www.who.is. Recognizing that some registrants may not want to display

their contact information publicly, ICANN allows for companies to offer privacy protection services to registrants. Privacy protection services replace the registrant's contact details available in the whois with the contact details of the company offering the privacy protection service. However, the registrar of the domain maintains a record of the registrant’s contact details. For the domain

bigezine.com, Protected Domain Services is providing privacy

protection services. Please note that Protected Domain Services is not

the registrant, owner, or registrar of this domain.

We have provided your letter to the registrant of this domain name,

and have asked that they contact you in an effort to amicably resolve

this issue. We have also asked that the registrant CC Protected Domain

Services with their response. If the registrant fails to contact you regarding your letter, the whois privacy protection service will be

disabled 72 hours after the notification has been sent to them. The

registrant's contact information will become publicly available at

that time and search-able through whois queries.

You may also want to consider other avenues to address this issue. If

you feel the website violates any applicable copyright laws, providing

a properly formatted Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or "DMCA",

complaint to the web host provider may be the best way to proceed. You

can find more information about the scope and application of DMCA

complaints at www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf. Unlike

Protected Domain Services, the web host has access to and can directly affect the content of bigezine.com. The domain bigezine.com appears

to be hosted by Softlayer Technologies Inc. This company's phone number is +1-214-442-0605 and they can be reached by email at

abuse@softlayer.com.

If you feel this domain name violates any applicable trademark laws,

filing a complaint through an ICANN authorized UDRP - Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy arbitration provider may be the best way to proceed. Further details regarding the UDRP process are available at www.icann.org/en/udrp/udrp.htm. Two of the most popular UDRP arbitration providers are WIPO, or the World Intellectual

Property Organization (www.wipo.int/), and NAF, or the National

HubPages' legal department is probably looking into the matter since this could result in loss of revenue due to hubbers not writing any hubs or unpublishing all their hubs. If they file a suit, it needs to include all of the hubbers whose content was stolen. If they don't include us as plaintiffs, we will be left out of any award or settlement.

HubPages' is probably losing revenue right now because of potential writers who are going elsewhere because they saw how easy it was for Bigezine to steal the content off this site.

If all of us "unpublished" our articles it would put HubPages out of business.

Daughter Of Maat profile image

Daughter Of Maat 4 years ago from Rural Central Florida

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if you write for hubpages, squidoo, triond, wikinut, wizzly, you're own personal blog or any other writing site, copyright infringement is inevitably going to happen at some point. Writing online is an excellent way to make money and those of us who are actually good writers and make a decent living off of sites like hubpages are always going to be in danger of our intellectual work being stolen by someone who wants the money. Like everything else in life, you can't let one bad apple spoil the bunch. If we all quit writing, the thieves have won. I, personally, won't quit writing, and I'm not sure I'll quit publishing (even though I said I would earlier). The more I think about it, the more I realize if I want to be a writer, this kind of thing is going to happen, and I can't write in fear.

There is a website called myfreecopyright.com where you can sign up and any work you submit will give you a specific copyright number. I won't publish a work until I use this site. It's just extra insurance since obviously it's redundant. It'll make me feel a bit better though.

Protected domain services seems to be on the up and up, the email I posted earlier did state they were making an active investigation into the allegation and if I'm not contacted the information regarding bigezine's web hosting information will no longer be protected by this company. So, that's definitely progress.

I have registered with myfreecopyright.com, I filled the information and I got a HTML code. But I cannot add the HTML code to my Hub. I used text capsule under the text capsule I selected HTML, but I'm unable to add HTML code. Because only these tags are allowed: a, blockquote, br, strong, em, u, h2, h3, h4, li, ol, p, pre, sup, sub, ul

Can anyone tell how to include HTML code to Hub, so that I could place the HTML I got from myfreecopyright.com ?

The answer to the question which was deleted within an hour of my posting a link to it -- was posted by someone who said they were being sued for copyright infringement, etc. and wanted to know if they could get away with it because they lived in another country -- was a definite YES they can be sued, no matter where they lived.

@internetgeek I've been trying to figure that out as well, until I do, I've been putting at the bottom of my hubs "Copyright 2012 Daughter of Maat, All Rights Reserved" and then pasting the MCN afterwards. This is what myfreecopyright.com says about the MCN:

"The MCN gives you a quick lookup and historical proof of your Copyright registration. With the MCN you can easily and conveniently prove you’re Registered & Protected."

@Cardisa Yes you are right. So that the reason the question got deleted so fast. So this Hub is also being stolen and being followed. Yes you are right, something is going on remotely. Because the Hubs are being stolen, as soon as they are published here. This could not be done manually so fast.

I found a site yesterday called bigezinelist selling a $50 package that tells you how to grow an ezine list really fast. It was sold by a Robert Phillips. Today that webpage is no longer functional. This hysteria has to stop. I am a editor, journalist, publisher and author. I have to know what is what. All of this complaining is just useless. And forget about complaining to any official Copyright organization unless you have been completing an actual individual form for every article poem you write which cost between $39.00 and $65.00 per year and then plan on around $2,000,00 minimum in processing fees and another $5,000.00 in legal fees for a poem or article which might only have value to you. At the newspaper I work for articles are stolen all the time and we don't even try to fight it any more. So the bottom line is if you want as your own, DON'T PUT IT ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET.

I will writing a detailed article on this after all the hype calms down. So folks, give it a rest. I have yet to read one Hub yet which has the correct information. Ironically not even the Hub has it right. Bigezine is nothing more than an article re-distribution sight like DIGG, Stumbleupon or Pinterest. Nothing more. Hope this helps.

Okay, I'm still too upset to write a coherant complaint to all the powers that be, so I left on comment on the post the THIEF of my Bessie Bruford hub claims to have written her ownself.

BUT BEFORE I left the comment, I took screen shots of 1) her B-Ez profile which shows she joined ONE DAY AFTER I published the hub on HP, 2) summaries of other posts (but probably stolen hubs) that show her as author, some of which have posting dates BEFORE her join date, and 3) the image info for each which - surprise? - are Hubpages image URLs.

Then I left the comment telling "her" she's a THIEF, and to take down the post ASAP as I'm filing complaints.

How incredibly STOOPID to steal hubs! Did these people think we wouldn't notice?

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA

No, it's not, Drtruthman. The site is listing our hubs under other author's names as their own work. No credit is given to us. On Digg, etc...we do get credit for our own work. This is not the case with Bigezine. You need to check that out. Of course things will get stolen; that doesn't mean we shouldn't say anything. And that site is not just re-distributing an article. They are claiming them as their own. That's obvious. You are mistaken. Go check it out.

Daughter Of Maat profile image

Daughter Of Maat 4 years ago from Rural Central Florida

I have a hard time believing nothing can be done. If that were the case the email I received from hubpages staff would have been much different and the DMCA would not exist. Intellectual property is protected whether it's on the internet or in print.

Bigezine is not just a redistribution site, claiming you are the author of someone else's work is not redistribution, it's plagiarism. And yes, plagiarism happens, but if we all give up and say "oh well, it's going to keep happening let's give up" then we're admitting it's ok to steal another's work. I'm sorry but I'm not ok with that. There are tons of books on Amazon.com that deal with this kind of thing. One of which I just purchased is written by a copyright attorney. WE HAVE RIGHTS, and don't let anyone tell you differently. Becoming complacent like Drtruthman only serves those who think they can get away with this.

Sorry Drtruthman, I don't care who you are, you're wrong pure and simple.

Our hubs can be easily and remotely stolen by simply copying the "Source Info" (which on Firefox can be found in the "Web Developer" menu when you're on the page you want to copy). I used it all the time years ago when I was a budding web designer and couldn't figure out on my own the html code for a part of a web page wanted to replicate. Never copied the code for an entire web page, though. Only used this as a learning tool, and NEVER EVER uploaded someone else's work as my own.

I'm also among the victims. And something is afoot with a website where everyone uses blank avatars as their profile pics. And to use the heading, "Expert Author" over every blank avatar is not only cheesy, but, rings hollow as a bell.

I've never heard of an "expert author."

Thank's for putting the word out!

PWalker281 4 years ago

I just posted on the wall of HubPages Facebook page, asking what it was doing about the Bigezine problem. It was promptly removed. I guess HubPages wants to be seen in a positive light, and I can only assume that problems like this one is being swept under the rug - at least that's the perception one is left with.

Thanks to Hunbbel Meer for writing this hub, and to all the commenters for providing insight and information on how to deal with this issue, especial Alocsin, who provided the abuse email address of this site's service provider.

I'm off to see if any more of my hubs is on the site (at least one is) and then I'll be filing a DMCA complaint, as well as contacting Soft Layer Technologies. And if I do decide to publish any hubs before this matter is resolved, I'll be sure to add Born2Care2001's suggested text.

And I have just hit the 200 mark myself! Just when I was starting to see some income from HP...I don't have time to sift through all that....and if they are offshore and cannot be prosecuted...that's another load of BS!

I searched and found that none of the articles on the entire BigEzine website have any comments. And with every avatar being blank, something is definitely afoot.

I'm starting to think that BigEzine is quite possibly a one-person operation---or a very small cadre of individuals. And I'm inclined to agree with suebee62 that it's an inside job.

I posted a hub about copyright law that might help everyone. I posted all the email responses I got in regards to this specific issue and information from a book I just ordered from amazon written by a copyright attorney. I wanted to put all the infomation in one place so that it's easy to reference. I hope it helps!

Hi Hunbbel

A haiku of mine was stolen. I sent an e-mail a couple of days ago to BigEzine.com. No response. I tried sending another e-mail a few minutes ago but received the following reply:

Sorry, but this form is no longer accepting submissions

I do not have a copyright statement on any of my poems.

Should I still file a DMCA? I know hubpages show the date our work is published. Can they provide us with the time as well?

I have to read how to file a DMCA complaint again as I found it confusing.

Thank you for publishing this hub Hunbbel.

Voted up and awesome.

1. @Daughter of Maat: Your posted email was helpful. It shows that at least some sort of progress is made.

2. DO NOT UNPUBLISH YOUR HUBS! Please! Otherwise, you will not have any sufficient grounds to claim that the hub was yours at the first place. So, please! DO NOT UNPUBLISH.

3. Do not write any new hubs (That's my personal opinion and recommendation; however, everyone is free to choose their ways).

4. Yes, it is an inside job. The person is tracking this hub as well. It is a one-man show. And guess what? I have tracked you down as well, and now I know your name! Save your arse!

5. And yes, this hub has also been stolen! Haha

6. Yes, they have stolen our YouTube videos as well (At least, my guitar covers' videos are being shown there without my permission and consent)

7. @Xstatic: They delete your comments asap!

8. Drtruthman: If we are the authors of the content, then our permission and consent should have been the first and foremost priority. It is not a redistribution site; they are using their 'expert authors' name against our articles. It is plain plagiarism!

9. I like the picture as well, Haha! Take a chill ;)

10. To file a complaint, visit: http://www.softlayer.com/legal/copyright-infringem...

11. Kindly try to avoid giving the backlinks by commenting with the URLs in there (URLs of bigezine).

12. It is indeed a sad day. As much as I love Hubpages, I am, with regret, saying that I did not expect such a behavior and response from it. This hub of mine is MANUALLY altered by a moderator and all the ADS HAVE BEEN DISABLED. My question is that when you can do THIS, you may consider to HELP us as well!

And to EVERYONE, who is/was/going to criticize me on writing this hub:

"You are saying that I shouldn't have written this hub to aware all my fellow-hubbers about this dire situation. Instead, you believe that all we should do is to write a DMCA complain. But honestly, tell me, how did you expect all the hubbers to know about the scenario in the first place, so that they think of filing the complain?

This hub created the much required awareness, shared all the methods and useful information/links, and now we are getting results. I wrote it with good intentions and I believe that I am seeing the positive results as well. So, with all due respect, stop criticizing me - with the personal messages on Facebook & Email etc too - that I should not have written this hub."

Cheers, hubbers!

So, much more damage could've been done to a lot of us, had we not found out through your writing of this hub. I know there is principle here, with which I agree, I just felt compelled to share my thoughts.

I cannot point the finger anywhere else. I do not blame. I accept responsibility for my own actions and in my case, no matter where or to whom I write, the pen will always be mightier than the sword!

No plagiarist, no rule of law, no rogue website can steal my heart. They may take my words and hopefully, if they are truly kind words, they will take off into the earth with abandon.

Hang in there people and focus on what brings you joy and peace and love. If that is money, so be it! If it is truly the the satisfaction of contributing to the art of the word smith then write, no matter where it appears!

But something is really odd about all of this.. currently their front page article is "my hub is stolen what do I do now" by hubber Daughter Of Maat. Is this their way of taunting Hubbers? They've even added a huge pirates picture...

How are they earning revenue? There's no google ads, just 1 banner...

Anyway, I got rid of my anger by writing the plagiarism hub.

@WebsiteConfetti When I sent an Email to the hosting comppany (at abuse@softlayer.com), I got the Email from them. I'm posting some of the part from the Email as per your question.

The domain bigezine.com appears to be hosted by Softlayer Technologies Inc. This company's phone

number is +1-214-442-0605 and they can be reached by email at abuse@softlayer.com.

internetgeek profile image

internetgeek 4 years ago from Hyderabad, India.

@WebsiteConfetti And the whole Email is as follows, if you want to read more about the reply from them.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Protected Domain Services concerning bigezine.com. Protected domain services is not the owner, formally referred to as the registrant, of this domain. When a registrant purchases a domain, the governing authority that oversees domain names (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or "ICANN") requires that the individual provide valid contact details for the domain. These contact details are indexed in a publicly available registry and search-able through "whois queries". You can perform a whois query on this domain through a variety of sites, including www.who.is. Recognizing that some registrants may not want to display their contact information publicly, ICANN allows for companies to offer privacy protection services to registrants. Privacy protection services replace the registrant's contact details available in the whois with the contact details of the company offering the privacy

protection service. However, the registrar of the domain maintains a record of the registrant’s contact details. For the domain bigezine.com, Protected Domain Services is providing privacy protection services. Please note that Protected Domain Services is not the registrant, owner, or registrar of this domain.

We have provided the URLs in your last email and requested the registrant take steps to remove the content and respond to Protected Domain Services. If the registrant fails to confirm that the content has been removed then

the whois privacy protection service will be disabled 24 hours after the notification has been sent to them. The

registrant's contact information will become publicly available at that time and search-able through whois queries.

You may also want to consider other avenues to address this issue. If you feel the website violates any applicable copyright laws, providing a properly formatted Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or "DMCA", complaint to the web host provider may be the best way to proceed. You

can find more information about the scope and application of DMCA complaints at www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf. Unlike Protected Domain Services, the web host has access to and can directly affect the content of bigezine.com. The domain bigezine.com appears to be hosted by Softlayer Technologies Inc. This company's phone number is +1-214-442-0605 and they can be reached by email at abuse@softlayer.com.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We would be happy to provide further assistance. We take complaints of this nature seriously and are actively moving forward to investigate this issue.

Thank you,

Ryan

Born2care: You quoted it very well. Thank you, my friend. However, I would like to wait to publish more hubs, until I see some positive steps in this regard from the authorities.

@Robin: My apologies, Robin. I couldn't understand your point about 'HP harassing me'. I believe that you said you were talking about the event when they disabled my ads on this hub (I guess, though I am not 100% sure).

If that was the case, I can ensure you, my friend, that it is not like that - I still love HP, and HP didn't 'literally' harass me by doing that. :) However, given said that, I would like HP to sent a personal message to its Hubbers in this dire situation, and play a more pro-active role in this regard, upon which, I am a bit disappointed. I went through part of the site and found many hubs there from many different categories. It makes me angry that people would steal so much content and it seems the only reason they do it is to try and hurt those who are working to earn money online.

I have one suggestion and that is you should disable the link to Bigezine in your hub so it is non clickable.

@Marisa--No, I did not give them props--or free links! I wrote a detailed note, I did NOT create a clickable link, and if you read my note, it detailed exactly WHY I did not do that, and I asked for everyone to DEPRIVE them of traffic by NOT making clickable links....It was a stern warning. I called them out as the thieves and scum that they are. ALL who write online need to be warned about these crooks...

And HP itself needs to be FAR MORE PROACTIVE in chasing this down, for in the end, it will hurt them the most, if all the writers leave and/or just stop publishing.

After all HP has done to improve its standing, and create a reputation for solid quality--they should be agressively pursuing this for thier OWN protection, if not that of we authors.

Great advice, Born2Care2001!!

And I wanted to update a comment I made earlier about HubPages removing the note I posted on its Facebook Page wall. The comment is still there, and here's the response I received from HP:

"HubPages -- Because Hubbers own their own content, we cannot file DMCA complaints on their behalf. You'll have to do this for your own Hubs, but we have a guide on doing so. It's quite easy! https://hubpageshelp.com/promotion/Learning-Center..."

I just rechecked my email and found a response to my message to HubPages via their contact form. They responded specifically to each point I raised. Here's what they said.

"Hello Patrice,

Thank you for your email. The legalities of copyright safe harbor for websites such as HubPages prevent us from filing DMCA complaints against websites such as bigezine. When we have sent requests to websites such as this in the past, and they were safely ignored by the third party. Going forward with legal action would open HubPages to severe liability. We will not engage with bigezine for anyone, including HubPages staff. If you wish, you can contact your congressional representative about internet copyright laws.

What we can do is provide you with information to expedite your DMCA request. Here is our LC entry for a DMCA complaint, in case you need the link:

https://hubpageshelp.com/promotion/Learning-Center...

We have found the following email addresses that are associated with Bigezine, where you may want to send your DMCA complaint:

abuse@softlayer.com and solanki8484@yahoo.com"

Bottom line, don't expect HubPages to get involved in this. At least we now have an answer, and each hubber will have to decide for him/herself how to proceed.

@JackC the hub you are referring to is mine actually. They edited all the copyrights to read Father of Daughter of Maat, which I found rather insulting considering my father is no longer here. Please, please, please remove all links to The Offending Site immediately! You are giving them free backlinks. Google counts all backlinks, even if the text around them is saying negative things - so by including links to articles on the site, you are actually helping the site be successful. I think most are missing a couple of points. There are no "authors" on that site who are stealing our content. The site itself has a robot that is copying the content and attributing it to randomly generated "authors". This is probably one guy in India, not a company. The fact that the stolen hubs aren't showing up in google searches suggests that google is aware of this.

I understand that hubpages doesn't want to get involved in individual claims, but this seems to be a site-wide attack. As such, it's in hubpages best interest to provide assistance. Failure to do so could impact hubpages bottom line if people stop creating new content.

Hubpages should allow us to watermark our photos for this reason.

suebee62 profile image

@Bill Well said. You are right, there are no authors, I believe it is one person, a robot, who is doing all of this. I could not agree with you more that hubpages needs to step in and do more than they are doing. This happened to a friend, only his photo was copied, stolen and later it was published in a book, even though he had his photo protected and name on it.....scary to think someone can get by with all this...and my friend, had all his p's and q's in line to protect himself from this, he is a professional photographer.....

Just woke up. Getting caught up on this fiasco. Let me get this straight. HubPages, which is losing revenue and might possibly go out of business because of the increasing number of hubbers either not writing or unpublishing their hubs, IS NOT going to sue Bigezine?

Lilleyth profile image

It appears to be a fishing site for email addresses since there are no advertising links. Now I'm wondering what they could do with our emails.

Bill Yovino profile image

Bill Yovino 4 years ago

I did a cursory check of the site for my hubs and didn't see any. I haven't published a new hub in about a month, so it appears that they began capturing newly published hubs a short time ago. They are probably web-scraping the Hubpages main page and pulling down every new hub. That would be the easiest way to do it without requiring human intervention. No one would need to browse through all of the hubs and select which ones to download - a very time consuming task. No disrespect to our beloved poets, but poems usually have minimal commercial value on the Internet. The fact that so many newly published poems have been stolen tells me that there is no targeting of hubs, just a wholesale capture of the site in general.

Hunbbel Meer profile image

Yes, Bill. I agree with you. Our esteemed hubber, Anamika Jain mentioned a tool, which is called Autoblogged Wordpress Plugin. By this tool, you can automatically snatch all the new content (like an RSS Feed).

The fact that even this Hub has also been stolen, only further justifies our point of view.

It appears to me that they are done with us and are moving on. They are going after 'Sooper Articles' now and also 'Ezine Articles' and I can't see Ezine taking this lying down. The big boys will have more clout than we as individuals

If enough complaints are filed with the web hosting company listed above (Softlayer Technolgies), the offending site will be shut down. All web-hosting companies in the U.S. have Terms of Service agreements that prohibit copyright infringement.

Hello: I'm having a new problem related to my email that is linked to HubPages. A spam email was sent to all of my contacts saying 'try this, it's great' with a link to

http: // www . news 1 5o.net / biz ? page=0482508

I've spaced it out so that the link doesn't occur.

which promotes something saying 'make $39,000 a year...'. This email does not show up in my 'sent' file but I do see the failure notice for those emails that did not go through.

Has anyone else experience this yet? This is getting to be a nightmare.

Does anyone know if we can add something like this to our hubs.

"This is my Hub if it's anyplace else on

the internet other than here. It has been taken without my permission."

I can't find the answer anywhere on hubpages.

Lilleyth profile image

Lilleyth 4 years ago from Mid-Atlantic

Moonlake, you can write almost anything you wish in your hub. HubPages provides the space for you to express yourself, and as long as it isn't something listed in their terms of use as prohibited, which it is not by the way, then have at it.

Hi! Sounds like your email may have been hacked? Easiest thing to do is to change your password. I had the same problem a few months back with both hotmail & google. I changed the passwords slightly and it stopped. Good Luck, Christo.

Great hub! I have suffered the same fate.

I don't know if this violates any comment policy on hubpages but my hub was stolen as well.

The hosting company for these people appears to be Softlayer Technologies Inc.

Their email to report a DMCA complaint is: abuse@softlayer.com. phone number: +1-214-442-0605

The registrants contact information is:

J Raaaj

Rahul Solanki WZ-34 Kakrola Road, Najafgarh New Delhi

New Delhi Delhi

10043

IN

Phone: +1.9810000007

Email Address: solanki8484@yahoo.com

name servers:ns1.ppanda.net ns2.ppanda.net

I have filed my DMCA complaint as a comment and received no reply. So with a little research... I found further information.

Thanks Christo. I've since changed my password and deleted my contacts for the time being. I did the whois and page inspect to discover I'd been hacked by a registration in the Ukraine with no contact email of course. How do they get away with all this stuff?

OK, I just located a totally plagiarized article of mine under the name of Linda Wade, published March 16th, 2012 at;

http://technology.bigezine.com/how-a-faraday-cage-...

I will be on a hunt for more. There wasn't even an attempt to vary anything, same photos, links, etc. Only the videos seem to be missing. Otherwise it is a dead ringer for my work published just the day before. The original article is at;

http://hubpages.com/technology/How-a-Faraday-Cage-...

published on March 15th, 2012. If Hubpage admins won't do anything about this, then maybe we should gather information such as I have and begin a class action suit against bigezine. I can be reached at syzygywjp@yahoo.com. Identify as plagiarized hubs so that you are not screened out as spam, as I'm currently inundated by spammers.

It now appears that a new strategy is required to publish hubs. That is to do it up while not on the web on a word processor, cut, paste and publish on the spot and then edit. I would not be surprised if there are program bots of some kind combing the net for articles to lift from all sources. This could even be an "inside job" to justify shutting down sites under SOPA or like legislation,

alocsin profile image

alocsin 4 years ago from Orange County, CA

Looks like they're finally shut down. The front page is there but clicking on an article shows a "no server' error.

hoteltravel profile image

hoteltravel 4 years ago from Thailand

Thankfully, none of my hubs are there. But I found it strange that not one of their top authors have uploaded profile images. And, an author with 200 published articles had just 340 views! As alocsin said, the articles are not loading anymore. We can see only the list with the summary. Thanks for bringing this to the notice of hubbers.

Lilleyth profile image

I just published a haiku which HubPages said was a duplicate and made me take it down. I always check for duplicates before I publish anything. Now I'm wondering if it was because it is on Bigezine. Grrrrrr.

We have to take some serious action against this website ..Thanks for pointing it out

syzygyastro 4 years ago

@ alocsin and hoteltravel: I just checked again and the access to the articles is still live. I don't know what the problem is except for the fact that articles are a little problematic to access. The way I found the copy of mine are by title (of your hub) searching on their site and this usually brings it up. So far, I have only found one as the site is a little difficult to navigate. You have to guess what category the copy might reside under as you cannot do a global search of the site. This may be where the error messages are coming from. The site over all is not as well developed as Hubpages, difficult to navigate etc., which may be why they are not getting a lot of hits.

This is what I just found out. The home page is active and when you click on an article it says the server cant find it. but look at the address bar...it is missing part of the address....there are two articles on page 11 written by Hubpages writers bellawriter23 AND Epigramman. G up to the address bar and add the word education at the very front of the address there and up pops the article in its entirety credited to other writers...I don't understand all this stuff but someone messed with the link from the front page to the actual articles....but they are all stillllllll there!!! and these were published yesterday on Hubpages I believe, or the day before but recently!

Hunnbel, I take back my comments about this Hub being a bad idea, because it does seem that it has spread the news around the Hubbing community better than the forums.

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you do two things.

One - remove ALL hyperlinks to bigezine. Maybe you are not an experienced internet writer so you don't realize what a HUGE favour you are doing bigezine by giving them these links. They are probably thanking you right now. This Hub is being shared, so those links are multiplying around the web and giving them even more "link juice", which is vital to do well in the search engines.

Daughter of Maat has a better Hub on how to report this particular theft, which details ALL the places you need to report it. So I suggest you change your DMCA link to her Hub. Here it is:

http://daughterofmaat.hubpages.com/hub/My-Hub-Was-...

Please also delete any comments that have a link to BigEzine in them. I'm sure the authors won't mind when they understand those links are helping bigezine and hurting HubPages.

....or, it could be a new strategy for someone who has such software - scrape a website, then under a profile at that website (the scrapped one) - start articles and forum posts about the scrapping website in order to promote it.

Not that anyone here would do that - just thinking out loud.

Earth Sojourner 4 years ago

I've delayed posting artlicles for the very reasons outlined here.

Just an idea:

How about no publishing of hubs for 72 hours except a daily OR MORE publishing of the following Hub by each Hubber. That way, when BigEzine.com copies hubs during the 72-hour period it will hopefully participate in its own demise in some way. Just a thought...

TITLE:

This Page Was an Attempt by BigEzine.com to

Plagiarize a Copyrighted Article From HubPages.com

BODY:

BigEzine.com appears to be a phishing site for email addresses. It is engaged in fraudulent activity in an effort to compile a data base for an ezine email business of some sort. Please click on the following link for more information:

http://hubpages.com/community/Our-Hubs-Got-Stolen-...

Earth Sojourner 4 years ago

Also, we may have to change the title (keeping the main point clear) each day if BigEzine.com or one of its "insiders" at HP actually manages to catch on and take measures which would allow them to continue their criminal activity.

Earth Sojourner 4 years ago

Still rather new to HP, but if it is possible, don't forget to insert your Referral Tracker into the article link of your warning Hub. You may be glad you did!

OK, I just clicked the link to my plagiarized article and it seems to be down for now. Great News, but I'm afraid we're not at the end of this. We will have to be vigilant. I was considering joint the site to act as a shill to see how it operates on the inside and report back. Right now, that does not appear necessary, but it is an idea held in reserve.

I have just been told that one of my hubs has been stolen and by the time I went to check it out the site has been taken down. Thank goodness.

I don't monitor my hubs for copies, mainly because I don't know how. I have a copyright declaration on my profile but that is all.

I need to watch this hub in case this creep starts up again ...
