Search Engine Optimization tips: Understanding Keywords in relation to webpage ranking

Search Engine Optimization

In the search engines, does your webpage rank high? Does it rank on the first page of any other search engine at all? If your answer is no, maybe you have not fully understood how it works and you are obviously not earning enough money for your effort

In search engine optimization, keywords are important in ranking high on the first two pages of Google. There is a strong connection between words you use on your page(keyword) and words customers use for their search. To fully understand Keywords and how it relates to page ranking there are a few things you should know.

Keywords- What are they?

Keywords are the words or phrases typed into the search engine by a user when looking for information. They are also the words that you as a publisher or article marketer want your page to rank well for in major search engines.

Selecting the right keyword is critical to your article and webpage ranking and it will determine how well you are positioned on the search engines (so you need to do a proper keyword research). There are so many tools to use for your keyword research but most people use a combination of Google adwords and Word tracker.

Google adwords keyword tool will show the keywords that are most searched globally and locally for a month, its competition and its estimated cost-per-click. While word tracker shows you a combination of possible keywords you can use for your content.

How to select your Keywords

When selecting keywords, you start by building up a set of keywords then you expand and shrink until you get the perfect combination based on what is commonly searched for.

For instance, If I want to write about ''home based business'', there are more than a million webpages on this topic. In order to rank on the first page I have to play around with a number of combinations to come up with either a short tail or long tail keyword that is unique and will stand out. With a little brainstorming and the use of google adwords and word tracker, I may come up with the following

home based business ideas

Online businesses at home

Ideas for home based business

Top 10 home businesses 2009

Internet business ideas

When combining the keywords, take note of the popularity of the topic itself and use most searched keyword variations. Try not too use super-competitive variations that will make it difficult to rank high on the search engine, you will be surprised how those smaller specific terms makes all the difference.

Optimizing your page using Keywords

You are writing your article for your webpage, take note to fit your content around your keywords and make sure it is relevant. Read it from the eyes of the user and ask yourself, does this information answer my questions?

To optimize your page, the keywords should be found

i. on the title bar and the brief summary of your content.

ii. within the content (do not stuff your article with too many of the same keywords or you will bore the 'traffic' of readers you have managed to gain)

iii. outbound links

Analysing your Keywords

You have written your content, It is now time to analyse your keywords in content by measuring it against words and phrases people use to look for information through the search engine.

What good is the combination 'Top 10 online businesses 2009 ' if most people are searching for online business 2010? What is the effect on your webpage If your keyword is not fully placed in the areas where the search engine considers as friendly?

Analyzing your keywords will help you identify the words or phrases that will make your page rank high in the search engines. Webmaster toolkit is one of such tools and it is free to use.

This tool allows you to input your page URL and the specific keyword you want to target and it displays the most frequently used phrases in your article.

Search engine optimization is very wide and can get very complex, especially when you are more concerned with ranking your page. If you try to follow every tip, tactics or strategy you come across you will end up spending all your time trying to get to the top rather than give your audience something to read.

To cut the long story short-

  • Research your keyword properly
  • Make sure your keyword is relevant to your content
  • Have a fun writing
  • Publish your hub and move on to the next

Before Long you will become a pro!!

Interesting....I just published a 3 part series on Hubpages SEO, but I didn't include outbound linking with an anchor that you are trying to rank for, nor did I even think of doing that. I will try it on a couple of hubs and see if it makes a difference in my rankings. Thanks!
