So you want to increase your Hub Score

This question has been asked so many times by old and new hubbers alike.

I always read the answers because there is always something new to learn here.

I never asked the question because although I have not done much writing here, my hub score has always been in the seventies and eighties, and I did not understand the significance of the Hub Score.

Hub Pages is a great gift to a creative person, a writer, someone has been hiding their light under a bushel. I can remember how I enjoyed writing at school and always excelled in English language and Literature. In fact, for those who know the English educational system of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) exams, I got the highest score in English…..1….which was a distinction. If I knew then what I know now, I would have pursued a degree in English.

Years later, when I became the Public Relations Manager of a Resort Hotel, I again began writing as the job entailed a lot of writing. I even started publishing a quarterly staff magazine, which was very popular and raised staff morale to a very high level. Subsequently I went through a very long dry period. Thank God for Hub Pages which I discovered when looking for writing options online. Of course I started and stopped for I was too busy like most of the rest of the world.

Now I have been given the gift of time, and what a pleasure it is to sit and write, to be able to read hubs, hop hubs, comment and answer questions, and to learn many new skills , to visit exotic countries, to discover new websites, to get help with challenging issues, to travel through the lens of some one’s camera, to encourage others in their writing, to share and exchange opinions and to learn how to become a better writer and to use the ever improved resources and tools at Hub Pages.

The Secret

Yes folks, there is no secret on how to increase your Hub Scores…or maybe it is the best kept secret…who knows for sure. All I know is that the formula is simple, and will reveal itself if you love writing and if you immerse yourself fully in the art of writing and in the spirit of learning and sharing. It’s kind of like a prelude to what life should be. So you should really write what you like, and “Feel the Fear but do it Anyway ”. You may have to end up having “Three Cups of Tea”, but along the way you will learn that “If Life is a Game, then these are the Rules ”.

Anyhow, to get back to the point, what I have learnt so far is as follows:

If you write for the joy of writing, everything else will follow.

The result was more comments on my hubs.

By reading relevant hubs, checking the forums and asking questions, I learnt to develop new skills such as uploading videos to make my hubs more interesting, adding links, and an Amazon capsule. I also learnt through trial and error.

The ‘suggest links’ tool is also good for linking your hub to others that may provide similar or more information for the reader.

Backlinking is another tool that I read about on Hub pages and which I have also started to use. It helps to increase traffic to your Hub.

I subsequently re-edited my older hubs, made them more visually appealing using my new found skills, and that increased my traffic.

By doing all of these things as part of the learning process, I realized that my hub score kept getting higher and higher. Today my hub score is at 94.

I am also beginning to understand the importance of writing frequently, as that helps to increase volume and raises your visibility.

I also have time to answer questions and to ask questions now, and it is a thrill to receive answers to your questions. Answering questions allows you to participate more fully in the Hub community and to make new friends.

As I started spending more time on Hub pages, I would comment on hubs that were of interest to me and also hop some hubs.

New Learning

Today, I realized that many new hubs come from questions that are asked. So now, I have another source of inspiration that will help me to write more frequently.

Today I also learnt how to use the new add button that appears in the left margin to enhance your posts and place links, photos etc, between capsules and paragraphs. That is so good to know, because I had been trying to do so. My new found knowledge came from another hub.

Finally, I would say be kind to a new hubber and be the first to leave a comment or become a follower if their work interests you. Remember how it was when you got your first follower or your first comment?

As I end this hub, I am pleased to say that I am quickly moving toward my one thousanth reader. My followers are still minimal, but I know that they will grow with time, if I continue to write well and to increase my output.

As for the money, that seems to be uppermost on the minds of many people, but like Oprah, I would simply say to do the things that you are passionate about, and the money will follow. I have no doubt that this will happen for me and when it does I will be pleasantly and happily surprised. Most of all, I would celebrate with a lovely bottle of wine....a good Merlot or Moscato. Meanwhile, patience is a virtue. Be patient with yourself.

Summary

So that ‘s the 411 on increasing your hubscore.

  • Relax and enjoy writing for the love of it.
  • Use photos, videos, links, capsules, maps and other resources to enhance your work.
  • Make use of the tools available to check your grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Learn everything you can from other hubbers...bookmark those you need as reference.
  • Get your questions answered in the Forums or answer some questions for those of us who are not technologically advanced maybe as you are.
  • Participate fully in the Hub community, by hopping hubs, answering questions, leaving comments and fan mail, and asking your own questions.

I couldn't agree more. I think if you write about what you love or what interests you, then the readers and comments will follow, since your passion will shine through.
