The Nooks, Crannies and Hidden Passageways of HubPages
Let's Explore HubPages
Do you like exploring?
When I was a child, I used to imagine being able to explore a mansion or a castle. I wanted to go from room to room to find the treasures and hidden passageways. In my dream, I could explore all the nooks and crannies and little details of the mansion. I would wander around the quiet corners and avoid the dangerous adventure without getting caught.
Of course, I didn't know anyone who owned a mansion, and chances are pretty slim that they would let me explore one even if I did. Plus, my parents wouldn't let me even if I had found a mansion and had permission.
Now as an adult, I still like to go exploring, although mostly virtually. Today, I am going to take a virtual tour through all the nooks and crannies of HubPages and I invite you to come along.
I have to warn you though, that this will be a whirlwind adventure. We don't have a lot of time, so we will just be taking a peek in all of the doors, so you'd better be fast and keep up. If you want to lollygag and take your time to explore any one room, you're going to have to come back later to do that on your own.
And do be quiet. We don't want to get caught! Although if we do get caught, I suppose that will be part of our adventure.
You should know that there are many different ways to get to the same rooms so keep your wits about you and don't get turned around. Are you ready? Hold my hand.
See all the white words at the top of the page? Each and every single one of them is a door to a new passageway! Oh this is going to be so much fun!
The first door we will enter during our HubPages tour is the HubPages door. It's there on the left. It looks like a simple logo, but it is a secret passageway to the HubPages home. I'll tell you a secret about the HubPages door. It is a magic door, because it takes you to a different room depending on whether you are logged in or not. If you aren't logged in, this door will take you to a special place that shows you the Hubs of the Day for the last ten days. It is a great place to go if you missed any! If you are signed in, it will take you to the Feed page.
Feed Page [formerly known as Home]
The Feed page is a place to kick off your shoes and feel right at home. If any Hubber you follow writes a hub, it will come straight to your Feed page. You will also get notice about accolades, forums and answers you follow. It all comes to you without you having to search for it.
There are some hidden doors here. If you click on the icon of the Hubber, the invisible door will go to to his or her Profile. If you click on the title of the hub, you will be transported to the hub. And, if you click on the picture that goes with the hub, a hologram of the hub will appear right on the Feed page. You can read the whole hub without even going to it. You can even vote and comment right there in the comfort of your feed page.
If you think you are getting too many feeds, you can go to the Accounts page and stop following some Hubbers, Hubs, Forums, or Answers. We'll go to the Accounts page later in our tour.
You can also customize your feed on your Feed Page so you only see certain things.
From the Feed page, you can see how many comments you have on your hubs, and read today's Hub of the Day. You can even see all of your accolades, and wallow around all those pretty colors. You can also see which Hubbers you follow. Click on them, and you can see the latest hubs they have published.
Hey, put your shoes back on! We've got more exploring to do.
One special place that many Hubbers miss is so secret that it isn't even on HubPages itself. It's the HubPages blog. On the right side of both the Home page and the Feed page is a listing of the latest news about HubPages. It also lists the latest blog posts. Be sure to check them out. You may learn quite a bit about other Hubbers, changes to HubPages, and advice on how to write Hubs so you can make lots of money and get lots of readers.
Hubs [formerly known as Topics page]
The most important part of HubPages is the hubs, and the hubs door is a great way to visit them. There you can see the featured hubs on the right side. All the different topics nicely listed on the left side, so you can select them and you can read about the things that interest you. Once you select a topic, you can even choose subtopics so you can find out about exactly what you want to know.
There are even links to questions and community discussions on the forums about the topics, so you can find it all from that one page.
Don't tell anyone else, but this list of topics may even give you some ideas for your next hub. The most popular topics are right there on the page, and as you click on the subtopics, you can see the most popular subtopics.
You can follow the topic too, if you want, and new hubs about that topic will come to your Feed page automatically. Simply click on the Follow button on the top right hand side of the page.
Who knows, my hubs and yours may even show up on the front page of this list someday, so be sure to come back to see how our hubs are doing.
For people who have been writing for HubPages for a while, the HubPages staff chooses one hub to feature each day. The Hub of the Day archive is a great place to see quality hubs.
HubPages is nothing without the writers. There are several ways to meet them. When you read a hub from the Hubs section, when you click on the name of the Hubber, you will be taken to their Profile Page.
From their profile page, you can read one of their featured hubs, or scroll down to see a longer list of their hubs. You can even choose to follow the ones like, particularly those who write about topics you like.
I also have a key to an invisible door that will take you to a list of some of special Hubbers. You can meet the successful Hubbers by reading HubPages Success Stories. Find out their traffic statistics, how many hubs they have written, and how much money they have earned.
There are two places you can to go to mingle with the HubPages community, the Answers and the Forum. If you have any questions about anything, well just about anything you would be willing to ask publicly, the Answers room is the place to go. It's another great place for topics for hubs, but also a great place to take a break and relax a bit. Your brain may feel fried when you are in the middle of writing a hub, but you can come here and show off how much you know and have learned already, and get your self confidence back up.
Ah we have reached the forums. See it, it's right underneath the Answers door.
Are you holding my hand? Be careful here, you can easily get lost and spend your whole day here. You can also read suggestions about how to write hubs and how to get people to read them.
The things in shaded in blue are things HubPages wants to make sure you read. This is where you can find out about contests and other new happenings at HubPages.
The menu on the left side shows you all the different forums you can visit. You can also learn how to write hubs, find out about system glitches and the like, and make suggestions for improvement.
You can also debate religion and politics, and anything else you want. Just remember, that not everyone has the same opinion as you do, and sometimes they may be very passionate about their opinion. That doesn't mean they don't like you, so don't take it personally.
The HubPages Tour
How are you liking the tour so far? Did you know this mansion had so many rooms? So far, we have toured the Feed Page, the Home Page, the HubPages Blog, the Answers and the Forum. We even got special access to meet HubPages Success Stories.
I'll tell you another secret. There are many more rooms we can tour.
Oh no! I think someone saw us. We'd better not let them catch up. Let's split up and run! Quick! I'll go this way. You go that way.
