Trying to EARN MONEY WITH HUBPAGES.COM ONLINE Makes Me Hungry (1/12 Update)

Sometimes I make pennies!
Sometimes I make pennies! | Source

I LOVE WRITING ON HUBPAGES.COM

The feedback I receive is awesome and addicting. Over the past almost three months (Note: an 11-month update is below), I’ve spent a lot of time learning about keywords and search engine optimization (SEO). I’ve learned how to incorporate most of the easy to use tools. I’ve signed up with Google Adsense, Amazon Affiliates, eBay, and the new HubPages Ad Program. And I’ve made some really great friends that have truly become my special HubPages family!

I WANT To Make Quarters
I WANT To Make Quarters | Source

I have a passion for writing, always have. See my article MY PASSION FOR CREATIVE WRITING: My Friends and Family Don’t Get It. If I am going to continue to spend so much time on my passion, I need to earn an income. I still do not understand and possibly never will . . . how others on HubPages.com claim to “earn a living.”

ADDING UP MY EARNINGS (after 3 months)

Adding up my earnings from the HubPages Ad, Google AdSense, eBay and Amazon Affiliate programs, I have earned enough to buy two gallons of gasoline or better yet, 9 and 1/2 $1.00 McDouble’s at McDonald’s. Yet because a much higher balance is required to cash out, I am not even close to obtaining a burger off the dollar menu. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled I am making something. But I’m hungry. I need to learn more about maximizing the earnings on my HubPages.

MY STATS: 3 Months on HubPages

In an effort to put my little earnings into perspective in hopes of gaining some assistance, here is a brief overview of my HubPage statistics:

Number of hubs = 30

Number of page views = 3,658

Number of comments = 764

Current overall earnings = $9.47

Note: There is an **UPDATE** below with stats at 11 months on HubPages

The intent of my openness about my earnings is twofold. First, no doubt there are others who will understand because they are hungry too. The caregiver in me doesn’t want them to feel alone. Second, I want, need and would appreciate feedback. HELP PLEASE!

I BEGAN HUBPAGES ON FEBRUARY 22, 2011

As a new hubber back in late February, one thing I clearly remember reading over and over is that you must be diligent, do not give up, and eventually you will see a residual income worth waiting for. I believe I’ve done that. I have not given up. I don’t want to give up.

In addition to all the time I put into my writing, I have spent even more time reading others work. I have read more in the past few months than I have in the past 10 years. Plus I have read many of the not-so-easy-to-follow forums. My reading glasses are really getting a work out.

IT'S DIFFICULT WITHOUT A STEADY INCOME

Things would be great if I had a steady income with an eight hour a day job and then worked on my writing passion when time permitted. That is not currently the case. I lost two really good jobs in the past few years only to leave me frustrated and bewildered.

I would love to be one of the lucky ones who earns a living doing their passion. Is this realistic? Maybe not. Probably not. But I can be stubborn and am not equipped to easily give up.

I NEED To Make Dollars

HELP FROM MY HUBPAGES FAMILY

I am ready and willing to absorb whatever else I need to learn here on HubPages so I feel as though I really gave it my best shot. I am thirsty for advice, opinions, suggestions, information, guidance, recommendations, feedback, warnings, etc. ~ PLEASE TOSS THEM MY WAY either through the comment section below or through the contact Sharyn’s Slant link on one of my article pages.

I appreciate any assistance that comes my way. Besides, we are family right?

With Sincere Thanks In Advance,

This is Sharyn's Slant

**UPDATE TO MY STATS: 11 Months on HubPages

Number of hubs = 54

Number of page views = 14,100

Number of comments = 1,921

Current overall earnings = $50.35 (HP Ad, eBay, Amazon & Google AdSense)

WHAT I'VE LEARNED AFTER 11 MONTHS ON HUBPAGES

I wasn't sure if I should update my stats and TELL ALL making me feel somewhat vulnerable, but I did, because I think it's important for new HubPage members to see that this is not a "get rich quick" endeavor. I do believe that I will continue to earn more as I publish more hubs on a regular basis and continue to learn more about marketing my work.

Although I do lose my momentum at times, inevitably when I take a close look at my stats, I am not giving up.

SO, HERE IS WHAT I'VE LEARNED OVER THE PAST 11 MONTHS ~

~ I learned that I love HubPages and am thrilled to have finally taken the risk of sharing my passion for writing.

~ I've learned that HubPages is like a second family to me. The feedback and support I receive is more than I could have ever expected. I have finally found friends that understand my passion.

~ I've learned the true meaning of "residual" or "passive" income. It does not mean "get rich."

~ I continue to learn the ins and outs of important things like SEO, titles, keywords, tags, marketing, HTML, back links, and so, so much more!

~ I've learned that even with something like writing on line, you should "never put all your eggs in one basket."

~ I've learned after 11 months on HubPages that I, honestly, am "still hungry." And yet I have been fulfilled in so many other ways!

Sharyn It is so discouraging isn't it. I am in the same boat and I keep thinking maybe I have set something up incorrectly. I enjoy HubPages and will continue to hang in there as long as I can. I wish I could offer you some advise.

Hello Sharyn, good hub as always. I don't want to put a damper on your hopes. But the essence of the residual income idea is that we need to write lots of hubs which earn a little income. So we need to think of time, many of those who are highlighted as good earners have written several hundred hubs over two or three years. Daunting task as that is, three months and approaching $10 is actually pretty good progress, in my opinion. Now think in terms of hubs you might be getting 10 cents a month from those you already have, in a couplof years several hundred hubs at 10 cents is $70 per month.

You might hit several really hot topics along the way which will bring in short term boosts, so please continue to write, I love your hubs. It is just too soon to see any real return. I'll bet in a couple of years you'll be really seeing the benfit of all those hubs you have inside you. And be way beyond the $70 I mentioned.

All the best

You and I are on the exact same page today. My last hub was about this exact topic. (Of course you said it better.)

I thought a Hub the other day was clever. All about perfume. And the ads were so cleverly placed. I'm trying to say that being more commercial may help.

Boy did you take the thoughts right out of my head! You and I are really on the same page. I started about the same time, have 34 hubs and so far think I have made $1.15. It is discouraging but I enjoy the writing and communicating with like minded people. You and I will have to see what happens a year or two down the line.

Sharyn, I am with you, one hundred percent! I was actually doing my own calculations today, and thinking of writing about it, too. I wish I had answers for you, but instead, I can just say that I definitely relate! I hope someone else comes along and has the answers that I lack. I do love your hubs, though, and think you are very talented!

Take care!

Sharyn...I'm in the same boat as you and seems like the rest of the hubbers. I think the people who are making the money have been doing this for two or three years and have numerous hubs. Truthfully, I'm finding it hard to come up with interesting hubs and getting somewhat frustrated. Good hub and topic.

Hi Shayrn! I'm also about the same at seven weeks. I communicate with a couple people on here that are profiting a few hundred per month but they have been here three years and publish a hub daily. Anyway, as always, great hub, and look forward to reading evrything you publish! Voted up and awesome!

Hi Sharyn. Me too, exactly and it is discouraging. I've written l00 hubs and it was an enormous amount of work. I think maybe the subject matter is important. I focus on Islam and I don't think that attacts many ads from google.

Dear Bret,

You are always so uplifting. I agree that we must have a significant number of hubs to really make a difference. And that it is still too early to see much of a return.

You mentioned having a "hot topic" to bring in boosts to our earnings. I obviously had one (only).

If anyone can tell me how to determine what article made the revenue? ~ I would appreciate that. I had an Adsense click that earned me $5.24 which seems kind of crazy to me. I tried but don't know how to figure out what article the click came from.

Bret, thank you for your support and such encouraging words. Have a great day!

I agree those making money have certainly been around much longer. If I could get those darn 36-HOUR DAYS, it would be much easier to hang in there.

Good Morning MsLizzee,

It is difficult at times not to be discouraged. I know for me, some of my work has taken a very long time due to the research involved. And I always second guess myself, checking things over, re-reading, re-writing, etc. The minutes and hours add up.

You make a good point ~ I'll have to look closer, what types of ads does Google place on your hubs about Islam? I was going to get a little silly here ~ but I won't. :)

Thanks for your support!

Appreciated your Hub; I joined just shortly before you, and have seen a similar amount of income. But that's with a whole lot fewer Hubs; I don't have time to write like you do. Partly that's because I am often not writing about stuff I know off the top of my head, and it takes me a lot of time to find and organize the information. But I am also spending maybe as much as half my time looking at keywords and what people are searching for and trying to make my Hubs fit those. This is something I figured I was prepared to do because I spent 10 years as a technical writer, meaning I was actually paid for writing boring stuff that nobody would want to read, but which for various reasons, had to be in print.

I had heard of HubPages a long time before I joined, but figured that, like everything else, if it was as easy as it sounded to make money, everybody would be doing it. So I didn't even try. Then one day I found out a friend of mine, Jane Grey on HubPages, was actually making money ($100/month or so; nothing one can live on) and decided to try it, with some advice from her. As other commenters have pointed out, she has been Hubbing for a couple years, and it took at least the first year to see much of anything as far as income. Also it took that long to get some idea what works and doesn't in the writing.

So I started with the expectation that it would take a lot of work for at least a year or two, and then I might see some money that would be helpful, but nothing to live on. And so far, that seems to be on track. If I find something more lucrative in the meantime, I might do it instead, but meanwhile, I am learning a lot about on-line writing and researching the demand for topics, which could be very useful for getting a "real" writing job.

I think you've just hit a wall of doubt which is one of the things that separates the starters from the finishers. You do definitely have to take a serious look at what you want and whether this is getting you there or not. But other than that, it sounds to me like you are on track to get somewhere. You have to remember that exponential growth looks about the same as zero growth for a while. Doesn't mean the growth will be exponential, just means you haven't given it long enough yet to say whether or not it's growing like that.

Good Morning aethelthryth,

I SO appreciate your detailed comments. I could see that your hubs require tons of time and research. Although some of the subjects are not of interest to me, you should know that I feel they are very well written. That's why I started following you quite a while ago.

I definitely hit a "wall of doubt" as you say. I've hit it more than once. Yet I did start with the expectation that it would take a lot of work and that is why I have hung in there. I love it here.

I believe the key for me right now is to find a balance (in many areas of my life). Thank you so much for your feedback and insight. Have a beautiful day!

Hi Sharyn! I love reading your hubs...your sensitivity and vulnerability and now..on this front: I have not signed up for Adsense or the new Hub pages income source. Wish I could give you advise but, I just haven't tried this route to income however, I am in the same boat as you and Amy and so many others (and it's SINKING!!) Well, not yet but, I do understand your dilemma. My friend 'we save cats' Al has signed up for Adsense but he works so much and doesn't have the time to write as he'd like to but, suffice it to say, he hasn't made a red cent! So..I wish you good luck because your writing and it's compelling nature certainly deserves a little monetary recognition!! Kathy

Will, you're a genius! I'm on the cruise ship with you, Sharyn, and started not much earlier than you. But all of you need to put me in a lifeboat because I haven't made one red cent either. Of course, I haven't written a lot, but all I aimed for was a couple of tanks of gas a month---small car! I still can't get Adsense going (they say HP needs to sort out problem, and HP says Adsense needs to!!!), and only affiliate using is Amazon. Aethelthryth made very good sense, and I appreciate that comment a lot, myself, but, Sharyn, please know you are NOT alone! WILL: got an idea to follow thru on your suggestion? I don't know where to start w/that, but sounds good! Should all of us like Sharyn and me 'put a collective ad' out somewhere? Hey, we could make somebody else rich!

The way it works now, one has to be both a content writer, AND an internet expert in order to make any money. Just being one or the other doesn't make any money, so why not submit our writing to a guru, who in turn massages the keywords and links so that a search engine can find us?

Just a thought.

I read on one of the forum posts that your hubs don't reach their full money making potential for 3 years. Google likes articles with a little age to them.

Are you backlinking your articles? If not try She Told Me and Redgage for starters. I earn a little money at both places for my links.

It sounds to me like you are getting off to a good start. The longer you keep at it, the more money you'll make. You may not be making a living from Hubpages, but you may earn money for the rest of your life from here, even if you stop writing. Think about that and it is a good deal.

Keep it up. You may end up being one of those fortunate few that make a living here. Your writing is good.

Hi Sharyn-

I know exactly where you are coming from - as you know. I am also quite frustrated that after all this time I too have only earned a few dollars with adsense(Now you know why I started to do more product hubs with Amazon products-fun shopping & hoping others will do the buying!) ;-) I also heard that some people make more on Amazon than they have from google but it really depends on what your writing about.

I can see you have done some of the SEO techniques with your titles, etc., you are a wonderful writer and have a great following. I know how time consuming it is to go through all the SEO tutorials, especially since techniques are always changing but that will help you to make money faster since you can't make money if no one can find your brilliant work.

To see which of your hubs are getting the most hits, click on your Google Analytics Account/Content/Top Landing pages and they will be listed in order including your bounce back rate (a bounce back is when someone enters and & exits on same page)and all kinds of information that you can use to understand what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

Email me Sharyn if you have any specific questions, I am glad to help if I can but I think you are probably earning as expected. (I know it sucks)!

Additionally, some more backlinks might help, as well as researching & using some good keywords and checking keyword density (all that SEO stuff again) which is why it is a slow process.

Don't give up, you are a great writer!

Hello Sharyn, that five dollar click would suggest a high value product account. So look to your stats on a hub.

When you look at a single hubs stats at the top of each hub open the stat menu you get a graph of visits and also their sources, Hubpages : 20 Google. Com :5 etc.

You can get figures per day, week, month and ever. These can be useful.

The last part of the stats menu gives you a hub matrix. Word Count short URL etc.

Included there you also find a possible value for the Hubs advertising from $ to $$$$$

of course more $ signs means the value of the advertising space is higher, so here think luxury items, travel, etc. single $ signs mean you will earn the lesser amount maybe pennies.

Also a thing for everyone to bear in mind is the current economy, not much is being spent on big advertising budgets so revenue is low, we are dependent on the market cycle, as advertising budgets increase so will our incomes, maybe prepare by adding some luxuries to the posts and be there ready for the future release of high value goods and technology.

Hope this helps a little.

@Sharyn - from the sounds of it you are doing great - well, at least compared to me. :) Granted, when I first started, I knew nothing about keywords. I didn't figure that out until months later and how important it was. Even today I am still learning. To have the earnings you have right now took me a long time. It has increased, with the more hubs that I have written. Can I buy my first hamburger off of the dollar menu - not even close. I am just about halfway there though - so I am hopefull!

Where I have noticed increased earnings was after I started concentrating more on backlinking and links. That is what has helped. I don't know if it because I am getting ranked higher in Google Eyes or what. But I do know that I have noticed the increase with that. But, everyday is different. Some days I check my earnings and I have earned a whole penny. My heart drops into the pit of my stomach and I think "Wow - all this time for a penny!" But, I do remember that I love writing... and I would do it anyway... so a penny earned for doing something I would have done without a penny earned is worthwhile.

I hope you find out the secret. The only true secret to success is to stay persistent, at least that is what I have found. Or, write articles that don't necessarily interest you but usually rank high on payment with little competition. I would rather write creatively.

Good luck on your journey!

I, for one, do really need to find a way for just a little extra income, and I had hoped this might be a venue, but if not, so be it--I, too, love to write and I've become very attached the writers and their writing on HP, so I'm happy. Don't know if I will ever get the hang of all the technology that helps; I learned long ago happiness is in the treasures I find as much or more than the money I make. I've found a lot here.

I am not earning a lot through hubpages. Although I have joined hubpages for three years already, I have only just begun to become an active member. Hence, I may not be in the best position to give advice but I have some suggestions.

Making money through Adsense is about clean traffic. You can't rely on Hubpages alone. When you publish a hub, try to make other people know about it too; tweet it, technorat it, digg it, and stumble it. No doubt that hubpages is great but try to write articles for several sites. I am a member of NowPublic and you earn money through pageviews.

You have just joined for two months which in my opinion, still have some way to go. Making money online is more about constantly finding new ways to earn rather than sticking on one single method. Bottom line, there is a limit in how much money you can make from Hubpages.

Hello

Sharyn and everyone,

some mention has been made of backlinks, these are very important in increasing visibility. I am sure you all know to use the suggested links option, use it sparingly though, and use only the best hubbers, I'd say those ranked over 90 at least preferably over 95 if you can.

Another means I have recently used is creating a blog on side issues to my writing on Blogger. I put in a RSS feed to my hubs too, this has increased my visitors by about 10% and can be used to drive viewers to particular hubs.

Hope this is not considered SPAM I do not monetize my Blog though, it's purpose is merely to share ideas, and advertise my Hub of the day, or week, depending on how I feel. Save monetization for the Hubs.

Sharyn, I love your style! From the volume of responses you've had, I'd say many hubbers out there were wondering the same things, but only ONE was bold enough to just let it hang out there. Congratulations! I must confess I haven't done any research into key words, I've only written about things that interest me. And I am WAY behind you in terms of earnings. So whatever time you have put into research is paying off. If you keep at your current pace and attain the holy grail of the 2-3 year mark, I predict you will be rewarded for your efforts. I'm so sorry to hear about your job loss, that adds a entirely different dimension to your effort. Hang in there as long as you love the writing, because it at least gives you an outlet (and gives the rest of us great stuff to read!)

Hey BBG,

Thank you so much for your awesome comments. Obviously, I've got to learn more about back linking. And I can see that persistence is really important. I too would still write, penny or no penny, because I enjoy it so much. I just need to find a balance so that bills get paid.

I can see by your writing that you REALLY enjoy it. And you have a lot of fun with it as well. That's why I love to read what you come up with next.

I really appreciate your support. Thank you,

It's great to meet you and I appreciate your openness in your comments. A while ago, I began a list of other sites where friends here on HP have mentioned that they write also. That's as far as I've gotten with that (a list). But I will check it out further. I also need to dig deeper into the Google reporting methods. Thank you so much for your insight (and following too). Thank you so much for stopping by ~ have a beautiful day!

My dear Sharyn,

I have spent much time reading your article and the many thoughtful comments that it has inspired. Thank you and to so many others (whom I have learned from...) and Voted UP, USEFUL, AWESOME & BEAUTIFUL... now some thoughts, hoping none are out of line!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you were looking to achieve balance in your life. That is so important for all of us, but I think those in the caring profession (like us) really need to focus on that.

You love to write. You are an awesome writer! You have an amazing follower base in a very short time! You are a quick learner and the technical aspects will only improve, making you even stronger. It is obvious that you are progressing (even better) nicely but this is "passive income". I tease my sister that I "might" be able to take her for a burger as she was my first fan... in about a year if I am lucky!

I read a book about "profit centers" where we come up with several sources of income, when we essentially work for ourselves... for me, I teach Nursing at a couple different Universities, and get assigned differently through the year. This is why my writing is a bit "erratic". I love the comment about expanding to SheToldMe, etc... Have you considered also writing for other sites or publishing some of your writing or I remember the card making hub I read... other things you love while you are home that could "feed that hunger"? You have so much talent and people appreciate it!

In sum, please let me know where to board the cruise ship and I will be coming hungry (but happy!) Love, mar

Dear Mar,

First, I've got to tell you that I love your new pic ~ it's precious! And thank you so much for your heartfelt comments, your inspiration and your friendship. I'd be lost if you weren't on the cruise ship with me. You sure know how to make me smile :)

As you said, I also appreciate all the comments here. What would we do without our HP family?

I do want to find the time to write elsewhere also to begin building those back links. I truly have enjoyed my time here on HP and look forward to learning more and more. It energizes me and makes me feel alive. I can't give that up:)

Thank you so much Mar for everything, especially your friendship.

Many Hugs,

Sharyn

I'm simply shocked that these sky-rocketing page views only bring in pennies dear. I'm so nervous reading this. I also started in February (late January actually) and my page views and traffic is growing but they do not tally with what other hubbers are saying. Only your stats match with me. I guess the Panda update hit us a lot. Oh by the way, congrats for the lucky advertisement click. Oh my my!! I think I'll invite everyone for dinner if I get that revenue per click. You seem to be lucky enough. I get only pennies in the name of ad clicks.

However, HubPages ads seem to be lucky for everyone as it monetizes each and every page view. If there was no HP ads, I would have left HubPages a long ago. All the best for your future on HubPages, hope you make it to the hubber's list on the home page.

Hello Suramya.K,

Nice to meet you. I guess I do have to look at the $5 click as very lucky. It's strange though that I get no other Adsense income for a really long time, weeks/months at a time. I was at $1.60 for two months and then got the $5.24 on May 6. Since May 6, I have received one penny making my monthly Adsense total $5.25. My HP ad program is now showing pennies daily, maybe a dime :)

I really appreciate you stopping by to read and comment and follow too. Thank you!

My remote default is set on writing, and the peace, fun, venting, and love that it can set off! I love readin', writin' and ____So glad I'm following your hub, Sharyn, because it brought me back to my priorities! Far from being a materialistic person, I still find having "enough" is much easier than not having it--most of the time. When started in Jan, hoped by summer HP would provide just a tiny bit (tank of gas a month, perhaps?) during the summer mos when I have no work, and maybe in time, it might help me get off the 'sub-teaching track,' which is getting tougher all of the time. HOWEVER! Thank you all so much for your responses to Sharyn's Slant. I've got my priorities back! From what I have read by people who are successful, you need to write for more than one website. At this time, I write for 3. One is just articles on religious information. The other two have several topics. I submit my articles to a website that pays a small upfront payment and then pays per click. If they don't think the article is good enough to pay me upfront, I publish it on Hubpages. Hubpages pays more per click that Yahoo Contributors. So, if they won't pay me upfront, then it just makes sense to publish it on a website that pays more per click. Especially, since that is all I get from those articles. I have a small amount of articles on Hubpages because I have been putting articles on here for less than a month. And, I, too, have not earned much at all. But, I have over 400 articles on the other site. I don't make much on the clicks, that. Which is why I wanted to try Hubpages. There are other sites, too, that pay you to write. You might try doing some writing for additional sites and see if they all add up to an income you can live with. But, like others have pointed out, it takes a lot of time and you have to build up a pretty substantial library of articles on each site you write for.

Good luck. Hope it works out for you! :D

So, I never relied on adsense at all but did make some Amazon sales and a few Clickbank sales. Great advice and comments here from so many others. You're on the right track, and you will get to where you want to, maybe sooner than you think!

Haven't checked out this hub for a while, but I just saw "Clickbank" mentioned by Charles. His comment makes me feel better, because I too have been unable to get on Adsense, although, supposedly, I have done everything both Adsense and HP has told to do; now each is passing the buck as to why I'm still "pending" after 5 mos. Maybe they'll clear it up in two years! In the meantime, what is "Clickbank" ??

Sharyn's Slant profile image

Good Morning Teylina,

I honestly had no idea how to answer your question so I've tried to do some research. It appears that you can add Clickbank links to your hubs no more than 2X each hub. There is a lot of information out there but it is confusing to me. Here is the link to the HP Learning Center on how to embed links into your hubs. http://hubpages.com/community/Learning-Center-how-...

When I find a little time, I will join Clickbank and see how it goes. I'll try to let you know what I find out at that time. Thanks for stopping by ~ hope you have a great weekend!

Hi Sharyn, This is a really interesting hub, mainly because of it's fabulous clarity and honesty. Everything I've read (up til now) about earning money on Hubpages, makes it look like, if you just take this simple steps, you can make great revenue here. Your experience and thoughts are exactly what I believed it's really like, so thank you kindly!!! (I'm not giving up, but I'm not looking at this as anything more than a fun, little challenge. Maybe I'll afford a coffee out of it one day. :-)

As for the first penny thing: I think you should print out a digital picture of one, and frame that. You could make a little plaque underneath that reads something like, "My First Hypothetical $$."

Hi Sharyn...I understand your frustration but I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that continued writing of good, keywordly sound (is that a word?) content and some social networking will bring a consistent residual income someday. When I have days of doubt, I go back to the testimonials of HubPages' top writers and get excited about it all over again! BTW, I just got my first HubPages ad program payout and will have my first Google payout soon (.25 cents away, do you believe it? LOL). Someday, EVERYDAY!

I know I have improved and am proud that I made the top 100 list. For now, that means more than the pennies that float in. When I first started, what sticks in my mind is how many people said you MUST hang in there. It all takes time and learning. They were SO right. No matter what, I'm having a blast on HP. It's quite addicting. Thanks for your comments, happy new year!

Sharyn, if you can keep writing hubs that cause this number of comments, then you are well on your way. I would absolutely kill for this number of views of a hub. Hang in there and the money will come. I am currently doing the 30/30 Hub Challenge. It is tough after just 7 days in, but I am already seeing an uplift in followers, page views, earnings, although still only pennies a day, but they have been doubling up on the odd days. Most of the people who brag elsewhere on the net about their earnings are lying to make you pay for and join their schemes. Hub Pages is a proper programme with real people. You can say to anyone, hand on heart that you are making money in your own internet business. Imagine your business to be a big business and one day it will be. Take small, daily steps and momentum will gather and you won't be able to stop it I feel sure.

Great hub and voted up / awesome

This is very interesting Sharon. I got off to a very slow start on HP, and earned very little for months. After 7 months I’m about where you were at 3 - but my earnings have been increasing steadily of late. This month already I’ve earned more than all of last month, and that was the best till then, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it keeps going that way. I’m certainly not giving up, and it glad to see that you aren’t going to either!

I was interested to read that the HP Ads made your google income drop to nothing. I have always had the HP ads, and have had very little from Google, I didn’t realise there could be a connection.

Thanks for sharing this.

Hey Sharyn, I'm not sure if someone has done what I am about to, so if this is a repeat, so be it. You should be very careful discussing your "earnings" and "clicks" which are made. It's a violation of Google's Term of Service. I suggest you re-read it to ensure that this particular hub isn't violating their terms of service. If Google Adsense sees your hub, it could possibly cost you your account.

As for those who are making decent money, well many of them have found things that work to draw the earnings. Example: Habee, Hubber/Author/Ex-Teacher has over 900 hubs and she is over $1000+ per month in earnings. I can understand everything you talked about in your hub, but I would also like to remind you of something I said once before, both at Hub Hoppers and on the Forums- It takes about 3 years for one hub to fully mature. That's with regards to earnings and traffic. So, please take that into account also.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Much appreciated.

Shayrn, I have found making money on hubpages-- particularly due to the content i write-- to be a little frustrating but, I've gained tons of experience as a writer, gotten published in a few other places. I feel I'm setting myself up for a decent residual yet supplemental income.

Mostly though, I've gained friends and colleagues. I feel hubpages has allowed me to gain an audience that will make it easier for me to obtain writing work and selling my own books down the road. It's very valuable but I do feel hubpages needs to make it easier to earn money so they don't lose valuable writers. They're making money hand over first...

Hi Justin,

I absolutely 100% agree with you. Because of all the "other than money" reasons you describe, I have stayed and not given up. I am very proud of all the experience and knowledge I have gained. And the friendships and feedback is invaluable. Now that I've been around HP for going on one year, I am seeing a small increase in revenue and know that it all takes time. That you so much for your great feedback. Best wishes to you!

Thanks for this! I always wonder how other people are doing (not to compare myself) but to see if my expectations are realistic. They're not: I want to make a living at this! :D In any case, I'll keep "exercising" my fingers until it becomes a reality. Great hub! Voted up and SHARED!

Useful hub to know where we stand. I have written 8hubs , not earned any money. But I love to write and am happy to meet authors from all over the globe on hub pages. Have a good day. Voted up.

Great Hub. I enjoyed reading an idea from you about what to expect from this ordeal. I share your economic frustration except that I have a few seasonal/part time jobs that I rely on in order to eat. It's unfortunate that after all your hubs and time that only a few dollars come your way. But, it's better then nothing and may just be the foot in the door process. I don't know, I'm still learning as I go but I consider the few dimes and nickels thrown my way, extra coins for the vending machines! Good luck, voted up and interesting!

Your actually doing okay. You are doing better than me at least. I am giving hubpages my best shot for February 2012 and let you know what happened.

Hi Cyndi ~ I understand. That is why I even did this for others to see the realistic expectations (and of course to see if I was unrealistic). You have the right attitude - keep pushing until it becomes a reality. It has for others, why not us! Thanks for your votes and share too. Best of luck to you!

I will be here almost one year soon and now I see what everyone meant by hanging in there. It definitely takes a while to see changes. I wish you the best!

I found your hub trying to find how to register for the 30 day challenge. It would be lovely to think that this will bring in income and I do think the hub ads are a little misleading in that they put income as a carrot to attract writers. However, what I really enjoy and it's worth a lot is the free feedback and support from the hub community. Joining has also stimulated my writing and helped me make it a priority. I hope you will grow your income and that I will too; and that all hubbers will feel rewarded through being part of the hubbing community. So many beautiful people on hub pages.

Hi Liza ~ it's great to meet you. I agree, the feedback and support is awesome. I have learned so much invaluable information about writing online in the past year. It didn't cost me anything, just time. I have hung in there for a year now. It can be difficult to not see a payout when you work so hard. But I do see it coming :) I look forward to checking out your writing. As far as the 30/30 challenge, I believe you can go to the forums to find a thread where you can let others know you are joining in on the challenge. Best wishes,

Hi Sharyn, we joined Hub Pages at almost exactly the same time. My start date was 2/19/11. I have 80 hub, around 32,000 views, one payout of $62 and aprx. $36 pending. I have had to face the facts that I must make my writing income elsewhere (i.e. content mills) but this type of writing will always be my passion.

Sharyn's Slant profile image

Sharyn's Slant 4 years ago from Northeast Ohio USA Author

Hi NY ~ yes, we certainly started at the same time by only three days. Although I have yet to receive my first payout but am expecting one this month finally. I appreciate your honesty about "facing the facts" - I understand exactly what that feels like. It's unfortunate because I know many of us put so much time and effort in to our writing on places like HubPages. I look forward to checking out your writing. Take care,

Sharyn

Sharyn, this is so helpful! Seeing what you did from 3 months to 11 months gave perspective. We must be patient. It will come. HP's is a great community with a feeling of family. Thanks for the great information! :-)

Hi Sharyn, I got my second payout today of $60. I have made $42 this month, which ends tomorrow, so I'm hopeful that I get soon make that $50 and get a payout every month. I took 9 months for the first, 3 months for the second and it will me 2 months for the third payout.

SHARYN - If you were getting paid according to comments - you'd be rich!

I too share in the frustration of qualifying for "low income." :-) However, I am determined and whatever it takes, I'm going to do it!

A helpful and yes, even motivating hub. Wanna split a burger?

Hi. I've passed the $50.00 mark on the ad program. I'm not putting in huge amounts of effort. Writing some, reading some and commenting. I'm seeing a slow, steady increase in earnings. I work for a few article banks, too, but HUB is way more fun and educational. Voted up. P.S. I am hoping to make HUB my only egg basket eventually.

You struck a cord...lol. I remember a line from a movie, Terms of Endearment, I think...."as hard as it is you wish it were that easy"...we love to write, we have a passion for it, but the business of writing is hard work and most of us just don't have the time to put in 24/7. All any of us need is one really good break and then we can give up all the other things we do to survive and just write. I am looking forward to the day that I will be earning lots and lots and lots of money...until then ????

Really enjoyed reading your hub.

Hi Jenna ~ Congratulations on passing the payout mark. I am seeing an increase in earnings too. It's slow but I plan on making more of an effort now. I have written for textbroker.com last year but haven't for a while. The reason I like TB is because the money does come in quicker, yet, it's a one time payment and that is it. Lately, I'm thinking opposite than you have described. I'm thinking of spreading my eggs :) But it's all just a matter of time permitting. Thanks so much for your feedback!

Since this is an older hub, I am wondering how everyone is doing now. I have been writing for two months and have not earned anything yet. I can see where this is a long slow process. However, finding the best titles and writing the best hubs is what it is all about.

This article was really helpful for me! I'm fairly new to HubPages and am still learning so much! So far I've earned $40.21 (through all sources) and I've been a member of HP for 7 months. There was about a two month period where I went off the map, but for the past few weeks I've been more active on HP and have already seen a significant increase in earnings, followers, and comments. There is hope! I also enjoy the interaction with other people who are passionate about writing and those who actually enjoy what I’ve been writing...that's what keeps me coming back!

Sharyn's Slant profile image

Sharyn's Slant 3 years ago from Northeast Ohio USA Author

Hi Alisha ~ It really seems to me that your earnings are quite good for only 7 months. It truly does take time. I believe I finally hit my first HP payout (which must be at least $50) when I hit my 13th month on HP. I only started following you recently and have seen you've published quite a few hubs in a short time. You'll hit that payout pretty quickly I believe. Your articles and topics are really good and I was wondering if you've considered applying for the Apprenticeship Program? I think you'd make a great candidate and it will help you gain a higher income more quickly too. Thanks so much for your great feedback. Good luck to you!

It's sad to see so many talented individuals spinning their wheels. Having done this for a few years now, and yes I started out new like we all did and made many of the same mistakes. I quickly learned HubPages is great for learning the basics. How to put together great articles with images, subtitles, great content and pictures. This is important as the only real way to make money from Adsense is to have your article or hub on Page One of Google, preferable in the top 3 spots. You will never make 5K a month here. Many wont even reach their $100 payout.

Now if you take what you learn and create your own blog on a single subject niche. This means if you are going to write about blue widgets, every post should be about or closely related to blue widgets. If your really lucky after many months of hard work backlinking and promoting your blog. The stars line up and one of your posts finally makes it to page one on Google and you have a hundred or so posts on your blog about blue widgets and you are an authority about blue widgets, and if your subject and content is good enough and your blog starts getting 300,000+ page views a month you may start earning anywhere from $50 to $300 a day with Adsense.

This takes many hours of hard work, it does not come easy but when you get there, it's totally worth it. Keep trying and remember there are no shortcuts, hard work and dedication is what pays off.

Hi dgicre ~ I apologize for it taking me so long to respond. Life has been quite busy. I agree with everything you say here. The bottom line is to realize that it takes many many hours of hard work to finally see an income stream. But if you stick to it, it can happen. Thanks so much for your wonderful feedback.
