What Is Pinterest? Pinning Photos to Boards To Get More Blog Traffic

Do You Have Original Photos In Your Hubs? Why Not Share Them on Pinterest and Get More Hub Traffic?

You can "Pin" your Hub Photos right from your Hub to Pinterest. Anyone who clicks on your Photo will be directed to your Hub Article!

What Does the "Pin It" Button Do?

You may have noticed the new "Pin It" Button on the top of HubPage Articles next to the Facebook and Twitter Share Buttons.

The "Pin It" Button refers to "Pinterest" which is a site that shares photos and contains links to the source of the photos.

There are some guidelines to follow however! Remember, Original Photos belong to their respective owners and should only be used and shared Legally! It is bad practice to post other's photos without their permission and you could potentially get sued for copyright infringement if you do! Only share your own Photos or those you have permission to share!

What Is Pinterest?

It would be surprising to hear that someone hasn't heard of this site recently. It has received a lot of media attention on television, news and even frequently mentioned in the Huffington Post. If you haven't heard of this site before, you have now!

Pinterest is a Photo Sharing Site that allows users to create "Boards". Each board has a Custom Title so that the user can "Pin" or add a photo to the board as it relates to the board's topic.

For example, you could create a Pin Board titled: "Favorite Hubs" or "Animals I Love". As you are surfing the web or reading Articles on HubPages, you can Pin a Photo from the page into an organized "Pin Board".

When you Pin a Photo to a Board, other users can Follow your Board, Like your Photos, and even Leave Comments about your photos! There is a category for just about anything on Pinterest and if you don't find a suitable category, you can create one yourself!

So what's the big deal? Well, each Photo that is Pinned to a Board has a link to the Source of the Photo. If you were to "Pin" the Photo at the top of this article, you can put it on a Custom Board with related Photos. When someone clicks the Photo on your Board it will take them back to this Article. Do you see where this is going?

How Can Pinterest Work For Me?

Pinterest can work for anybody who writes articles and uses Original Photos in their Hubs. By adding your photos to Pinterest you are creating backlinks to your Hubs. Anyone on Pinterest who likes your photos and clicks on them will automatically be sent to the Hub that the Photo originated from.

Backlinking is a great strategy for those who want more traffic to their Hub Articles. Pinterest is probably the fastest and easiest way to create backlinks. You can create a backlink in just about a minute or less!

Why is Pinterest a great Backlink site? To quote an article from the Huffington Post:

"The social image-sharing network is one of the fastest growing sites on the web. According to recent data released by Experian Hitwise, the site's total page views increased by 21 percent in the U.S., placing it among the 30 most-viewed sites in the U.S. The New York Times reported on new Nielsen data that Pinterest attracted 16.1 million U.S. unique visitors this past January, double the amount it had just two months earlier in November 2011."

There is also an iPad Application that is rumored to be released soon which will make traffic to the site go through the roof! Before long you will most likely see Pinterest in the form of Apps and Plugins on most Social Networking Sites (Facebook already has this for users with a "Timeline") Literally speaking, Pinterest is the future of Photo Sharing Online!

Test Your Knowledge!

It's pretty clear to see the benefits to using Pinterest by adding your photos to create more backlinks to your Hub articles. There are a few things that you need to know first:

  • You need to be Invited to join. If you haven't received an invitation you can sign up for the waiting list or have one of your friends send you an invitation.
  • Image Use is subject to Copyright. Only share your own photos or photos you have permission to share!
  • Once you receive and invitation you can register through Facebook or Twitter.
  • You can add a "Pin It" Button to the top of your address bar for fast and easy Pinning!
  • At this time, Pinterest is an Ad Free Site
  • The site is very well organized

For any Hubber that does not want their Photos to be Pinned, HubPages has created an Opt-Out path so that your Photos are blocked from being Pinned. Click here to learn more about shutting off the "Pin It" feature on HubPages.

Pinterest is growing very fast and many members have seen an increase in Hub traffic from Pinterest in a short amount of time. If you are looking to get exposure to your Hub Articles from outside (non-HupPages) sources. using Pinterest is a great way to get started!

I try and use my own photos on my Hubs. So I have no problem "pinning" them on Pinterest. I love it. I'm getting some traffic now after about two weeks. I'm trying to figure out how to add the Pinterest button to my profile. I tried to copy/paste the code on my profile, but it does't work that way, I guess. Can you please help me. Remember, I'm a little on the slow side, so tell me in really plain language. Thanks a bunch. Goodnight.

I did not know Pinterest was that popular. A lot of people with webpages are looking for backlinks I guess it would be good for that as well as for hug pages. You must have an invitation to join it or get on a waiting list?

@mary615: Hi! Isn't it great to get backlink traffic so easily?

As far as adding Pinterest to your profile:

*Go to "Edit Profile"

*Type in the text you want to link to (ex "Follow Me on Pinterest")

*Highlight the word, and click the link tool (looks like a chain link)

*Type in pinterest.com/ENTER YOUR PINTEREST USER NAME HERE/ and that should take care of it!

My link looks like this: pinterest.com/jsmatthew/

I hope this helps!

@flashmakeit: Hello! Pinterest is growing by the thousands every day! It is a fast and easy way to create backlinks to Hubs that have original photos. You do need an invitation or you can request to join by going to the main page (I heard they accept very fast). You need to have Facebook or Twitter to join. Hope to see you on Pinterest!

@Bldg an Architect: Although we do have to be careful about posting other people's photos, it is a great way to share our own photos with backlinks to our Hubs. Not all Hubbers want their photos shared so only share from Hubbers you know that don't mind. When in doubt, ask the Hub Author! Thanks for stopping by!

Ah, yes. Pinterst. A site I don't want anything to do with, but does not frighten me as much as when I first wrote my own hub. I thought the fact that "Cold Brew Lab," its parent company, had that name meant that it was related to alcohol (it isn't) and that freaked me out as I have a recovering alcoholic in my family and I thought it would be in horrible taste to make money off of alcohol. Also, now that we have the opportunity to remove the pin button from our sub-domains I see it as not giving permission to use my photo gallery pictures of my cat-so I republished my cat photo galleries.

Hi JS. This one very useful information on Pinterest and you have explained it all very well. I have a few questions though.

1. If I pin a photo that has proper attribution and has the necessary license for commercial use in my hub, is it ok?

2. Can I pin a public domain photo which is part of my hub?

3. Can I pin a photo owned by me while I have other photos which are either properly attributed , approved for commercial use or public domain pictures in my related hub?

Please be kind enough to clarify. Thanks.

@ rajan jolly: Hello Rajan! Sorry I haven't been around lately, I've been trying to keep up with my 30/30 Challenge and the Contest for March. My day job has been busy too as the weather gets warmer here! It has been very crazy lately!

You ask some great questions!

Technically, even if you properly attribute the author of an image or photo, that does not guarantee consent. Think of it as using a Google Image on a Hub; just giving author attribution does not permit legal use. I would suggest sending an e-mail to the author and asking for their consent or checking the author's copyright and licensing guidelines on their site. Hubbers themselves can opt-out of Pinterest, so if you know that they like to share, they probably will appreciate you Pinning their photos. When in doubt, Ask first!

To answer your last question, if you are Pinning your own photo, remember that your photo is all that you are pinning and so even if you have legally shared photos that appear in the Hub that the link sources back to, you have already attributed them in your Hub, and the Pin has nothing to do with anything other than the actual image that you are sharing.

Think of it as the same as sharing on Facebook or other Social Networking sites. Try to remember that you are Pinning a photo that goes to the link where the photo originally came from, not all the photos that come from the link.

I do hope this answers your question! Thank you for asking and I hope to see you on Pinterest soon!

Hi J.S.

Thank you. I just registered on pinterest. I only have one hub with original pictures so I pinned it. It is about my trip to Edinburgh. I called it Edinburgh April 2012. I tried to pin your picture of the lake but it showed up in my Edinburgh April 2012. Anyway, I deleted it because it is not Edinburgh and I did not ask your permission.

Voted up and awesome

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hi Sueswan! For the record, you have my expressed permission to Pin or Repin (share) my photos on Pinterest! When you share a photo from a page it will automatically be linked to the site of the photo's origin. Pinterest is a great way to get backlinks to your Hubs and get some traffic from outside of the HP Community.

HubPages allows Hubbers to opt-out of Pinterest so that people can't Pin their photos if they don't want them to. If you are not sure if it is OK to Pin, ask the Hubber like you have done here!

Another thing is that you can create "Virtual PinBoards" with original titles such as "Favorite Recipes", "Gardening", etc. based on the type of photos you Pin and Repin. This allows you to create PinBoards based on a specific topic.

I appreciate your comment and votes! Happy Hubbing and Happy Pinning!

Do you know why there is no option to pin some of the older hubs?

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hi Laura in Denver! I am not sure if older Hubs were optimized with the Pinterest button, although I thought they were. There is a feature for Hubbers to opt-out of Pinterest sharing so that the Pin It Button will not show on their Hubs. If you are experiencing this on your own Hubs that you want to allow people to Pin, then I suggest that you contact the team: http://hubpages.com/contact_us/ Please let me know what they say! Hope this helps! Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to knowing what the team replies to you!
