WHAT'S UP WITH HUB SCORES?

TIME TO REVOLT?

Fellow hubbers you may have a cogent answer to a question that’s been puzzling me lately. That question is the title of this hub, “What Up With Hub Scores?”. How do the grand hookahs of hubpages calculate these scores for our hubs? I used to think these scores were computer generated, but if they are the software is all screwed up. I have two examples of what is puzzling me below. For the non-hubbers who may be reading this hub the explanation of what is posted is as follows: First is the title of the hub, second is the hub score, third is total comments, forth is today’s views (7/23/2010), fifth is weekly views, sixth is 30 days of view, seventh is views forever and last is date of hub publication.

MORTALITY MOMENTS

64 - 14 - 0 - 40 - 40 - 40 - 07/19/10

WHAT'S UP WITH FOLLOWERS?

51 - 26 - 17 - 48 - 48 - 48 - 07/22/10

As any idiot can plainly see the numbers for these two recently published hubs show that the Hub Score for, “What’s Up With Followers?” should clearly be larger than the Hub Score for “Mortality Moments”. Take a moment to let this information sink in.

Do you realize that your hub future is either in the hands of idiots or faulty software? There's no way on God’s green Earth that these two scores make sense with any other explanation. Are we going to keep acting like little hub lemmings diving over the cliff?

I think it’s time we demand justice and accountability from Hubpages. We must demand a full explanation of exactly how Hub Scores are calculated (if they are), or are they just an assigned number that that great hubmaster in its ivory tower assigns to us in an unfair and unjust manner. JUSTICE DEMANDS WE GET THE ANSWER NOW WITH NO DELAY!!!!!!!!

I have been wondering how the hub scores work. My hub that get a lot of hits a day ranks less than hubs that only gets a couple of hits a week. I do not understand it.

Keep on hubbing!

I share your bewilderment. I think we must demand answers!!!!!!!!

Hear, here and well said and well done, I'm with you all the way on this one. Promises...promises....a bit like pyramid selling if you ask me, only hub pages and a few 'chosen' ones get to score, let alone count money.

katyzzz,

I knew I could not be the only one who's stomach was churning with this injustice!!!!!!!!!

Your scores do not make sense, so send an e-mail. I donot worry too much about scores- ( although they are constructive feedback ) if they are applied fairly. I have noticed other hubs scores that I felt were too low or too high. But I write this off. Ask the staff for an explaination. You write very well, by the way.

One day my lowest scoring hub was a 55. A couple of days later it was 45. Another thing I've noticed is I can have a red arrow with just one view. That tells me each hub is figured individually - if I usually have 7 views and today have 4, blue arrow. If one hasn't been viewed in some period of time, then just one is good. And that number under your picture - I know mine will go down when I publish a new hub, so it has to be at least partly figured on how people rate it. In the end, though, I don't think it matters.

fetty,

I hear your suggestion, but writing an email may bring the wrath of the grand hub hookahs down on my head.

Thank you for your complimentary comment.

You make many good points, but I think Hubpages at least should explain how they compute the hub score. I think we hubbers are owed an explanation they promise tranparency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your visit and comment.

I really don't pay much attention to the scores since they seem to vary all the time.

dahoglund,

That's probably a good idea, but there's something in my makeup that makes it hard to do!!!!!!!!!

Tom, I feel your pain bro' but I personally don't understand the methods, like you it doesn't seem to add up, it does encompass your amount of hub reading and commenting as well, that may explain some of it, but not all, dang there goes my karma down again....... 50

Dusty,

It seems conspiratorial in many ways, but I'm not totally sure. Your Karma seems fine to me!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the ratings are similar to doubling or tripling a recipe in cooking/baking; the amount of salt added each time is reduced instead of doubled or tripled. For hub rating, it seems the same; as some numbers go up, others must go down. ?? Perhaps if you send a nicely worded email for information and understanding purposes only, the ire of the 'scientists' who hold the key to the "WHY" won't be raised. I'd ask them, were I you.

I do not know how this scoring system works, so thank you Tom for putting it out in the open!! I would love to know too!!

Susanp,

I am ashamed to admit I'm somewhat intimidated by the Hubmasters, and hesitant to communicate with them. Maybe they will read this hub and volunteer the answer.

Thank you for your comment.

I think we desrve the answer , but I'm not holding my breath knowing the Hubmasters.

I agree because I read it, and couldn't make heads or tails out of it!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tom, you old rascal you, take that tongue out of your cheek and tell me that you don't know that the Hub score is arrived at by more than the amount of views that a Hub receives? Do you really think that HubPages is gonna let us in on the secret of the scoring system, so that some really nasty people can get in and manipulate their hubs to get better scores? Hmmm sounds like a good idea to me !

pinkylee 6 years ago

Have you thought about how the people reading your hub rate it? The hub that has more views does not mean it will have higher scores just based on that. If someone reads it and rates it down yet reads another and rates it up then you have your reason for the difference. I have hubs that are rated in the 40's because they are not being viewed much anymore therefore not getting rated. Hope this helps to make a little sense out of it.

It is a mystery to everyone it seems, Tom! While my profile score will occasionally show 100, I cannot fathom why it does so by any obvious means. A good conspiracy theory is always good for keeping everyone on their toes, though! LOL!

Tom Whitworth profile image

Tom Whitworth 6 years ago from Moundsville, WV Author

pinkylee,

I'm aware that people's rating may effect the hub score, but can you, or anyone who's a hubber quantify the amount. If so please have them tell me!!!!!!!

Thank you for your input.

Tom, I am convinced that there is no rational answer. My hub "Hub Panic" generated over 150 viewings in less than 24 hours and the score actually decreased and stood at 48. The only thing I can surmise is that lots of folks read it and they all hated it! Quality does not seem to be the answer and neither is quantity. I see hubbers all the time with just two or three hubs who have a higher overall score than myself. Not that I care but if would be nice to know that something makes sense. Thanks for raising the question! WB

Tom Whitworth profile image

Wayne, that's all I wanted too a logical answer to the question!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just asked this exact question today on another hub I read but it seems no one knows. It seem that some special hubbers have 100 all the time even though some hubs are obviously better in quality than others. I hope someone finds out an writes a hub so we all understand.

I haven't a clue how these scores are determined. I have read the information in the HELp section, but I still don't get it. Great hub, Tom.

Pop,

I think the Great Hubmasters in San Francisco use some device like a Magic Eight Ball to determine scores!!!!!!!!!!

The scores, for me, are as bewildering as they are to you. I personally don't pay them a whole lot of mind. So long as I'm happy writing, getting a few comments to engage the discussion, and getting a few pennies here and there from Adsense, I'm fine with all the other stuff. If one day HubPages is no longer a great place to write, I'll just take my writing elsewhere, and do the best I can to take a few fans with me along the way.

Tom, just wanted to share another strange hubscore thing. My score was at 95 for over a week. Published a new hub Sat evening, and already over 100 have read it. I have gotten several new fans over the last few days, but my hub score mysteriously fell overnight and is now a 91. I know i'm just paranoid, right?? My criticism of the left leaning overseers of this site SURELY had no effect on my score...do you think??

I don't write for money at all. I just want to know how they score. It really a question that's puzzeling to me!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure!!! You may be onto something about THE GREAT HUBMASTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
