What Changes Could Make HubPages Even Better? (Even More Addictive?)

The Magical Land of HubPages
The Magical Land of HubPages | Source

Before I move into uncharted territory, I want to state here and now – I enjoy the writing experience (and education) I have received since stumbling into the Magical Land of HubPages. My journey has been stimulating, educational, rewarding, and fun.

Obviously I am quite happy with things the way they are now, but with a few changes I could be ... ecstatic and hopelessly addicted!

A Little Background

Today I read a hub by AEvans, The Tall Tale Signs Of A HubPages Addict, and I had to admit once again that I too am a HubPages addict. I’ve got it bad; and it isn’t always pretty, but it certainly is fun. Currently I am not pursuing a cure.

Yesterday I read a hub by Victoria Lynn, Features I Wish HubPages Would Add, and I agreed with everything she had to say. I realized I also had my own list which I had been formulating in my head. I have often toyed with the idea of writing a hub about it, but had never done so. Then today, I came across a question that addressed this very issue, Adding what features will make HubPages better? (Question has been deleted), and I realized it was time to put my thoughts onto paper.

I must admit, if even some of these changes would be implemented, I would be very pleased. If all of my proposed changes were implemented, I may be hopelessly lost in my HubPages addiction. What a wonderful way to go!!!

Would you like to be able to place pictures on the left side of your hub?

Picture Capsule

The picture capsules have many options, they can be size adjusted: full-width, half-width, and quarter-width.

The capsules can be positioned on the right side or centered if half-width or quarter-width is selected. There is no option for a picture to be placed on the left side of the hub with text wrapping on the right side. I would like to have that option.

Do you see value in being able to add Amazon and Ebay capsules below the comments?

Amazon and Ebay Capsules

Although I currently cannot provide you with a hub where I have seen this to be true, it is apparent that once upon a time in the Magical Land of HubPages, capsules (amazon) could be placed below the comments capsule. The few times when I have seen this done on a hub, I felt it provided for a cleaner looking hub. I am suggesting that Amazon capsules and Ebay capsules be given this capability once again.

Would you like the ability to choose for text to be CJT or RJT?

Text Capsules

I think it would be beneficial to all, especially to those writing poems, if the text capsules could be center-justified especially, and right justified additionally.

I especially think it would be more visually appealing if the header had the ability to be center-justified on all capsules.

Would you like to see the Down Button eliminated?

  • Yes

Buttons

Buttons are one of those touchy subjects. – especially the down button. I believe that the down button serves no purpose other than to be vindictive and mean. If there is a problem with the hub, it should be flagged and the issues addressed. Flagging inappropriate or low quality material benefits everyone within the HubPages community who is writing quality content. I would like to see the elimination of the down button across the board. This elimination would also stop the apparent abuse that I have witnessed when questions are answered.

Do you feel that more buttons would be utilized if located in close proximity to the comments box?

  • Yes
  • No

Currently there are 3 locations on a hub for someone to show their appreciation of the hub's contents. The first one is the very top of the hub - the Tweet, Facebook Like, Google+ and Pinterest buttons. The next place is often in the middle of the hub, especially after many comments have been made. Here you have the ability to share the hub and to select your reaction to the hub by choosing to click on any or all of 5 buttons - useful, funny, awesome, beautiful and/or interesting. The last place you can interact with the hub contents and author is by leaving a comment.

I can speak from personal experience that once I have commented, I often forget to go back and utilize the other two locations to show my appreciation of the hub, especially those found at the very top.

I think it would be beneficial to the hub author and the overall performance of the hub if all of these options were located in one place on the hub making it easier for the reader/commenter to remember to provide the various forms of feedback.

Do you think having the ability to copy capsules would be a good option to have in your toolbox?

Capsules in General

I would like the ability to copy one capsule from one hub to another. Although this is not often needed, should someone decide to change the URL of a hub, this could be very beneficial. Also, if someone wanted to repeat something, such as a copyright warning, this feature would be used often. Capsules with related links to related hubs could also be copied from one hub to another.

Even in the creation of this hub, I thought it would be helpful for me to be able to copy the poll capsule and then edit the question.

Do you think these hub metrics should be available after a hub has aged for one month?

Hub Metrics

Certain aspects of hub metrics has been very frustrating for me. I have been with HubPages a little over seven months and none of my hubs show me the stats for “viewer duration” and “in-coming links”. How long does it take? How long is too long? I venture to state that 7 months is way too long. This information is important for me to be able to judge the efficacy of my hubs.

Graphics

I am a visual and creative person. I realize that HubPages wants to maintain control of their site to ensure that the viewer receives a valuable experience. There are times that a visual (graphic) divider serves a purpose. It would be great if Hubpages would provide graphics for dividers to those who do not know how to create them for themselves. By providing acceptable dividers, HubPages would also be maintaining the control they want, to insure that the site is viewed as a quality site. Examples of dividers that I have seen used on HubPages are:

Would you like for HubPages to provide dividers for their writers to use?

The main reason this is a concern for me ....

Remember when many people were adding banners to the bottom of their hubs inviting readers to vote up and comment. Those soon became against the rules and had to be eliminated in all hubs or the hubs could be unpublished. The banners were thought to look unprofessional. I fear the same thing could happen with dividers. What one person considers to be tasteful, another may not.

Do you think we need more options on the profile page - do we need more control over what is displayed?

  • Yes

Profile Page

I would like to see the option to be able to choose hubs to spotlight, rather than having someone or something choose for me. I think that having capsules where we would be allowed to pick a predefined tag, chosen by us, that would then be placed in the different categories. Currently, after listing my 6 latest hub, HubPages then goes on to list “Some of homesteadbound's Favorite Topics” without even knowing whether they are actually my favorite topics or not. I am really not sure of the criterion that mandates what gets listed there. Since it is a page that represents me, and it specifically states that it is “some of MY favorite topics” I should have more say about what is listed there.

Do you think that someone should be able to change their username?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Does not matter to me!

The Ability to Change Username Without Penalty

I am adding this last item after 8 people have already commented, so I apologize to them for this. I forgot to add this one item, and to me it is the most important.

When I first started at HubPages, I signed up as homesteadbound, not using my real name, Cindy Murdoch. I wish now that I had the ability to change my username to Cindy Murdoch without any penalties. The biggest penalty that I would have to face is the loss of all my followers. I appreciate all my followers so much and would hate to lose any of them. That is an improvement in the system I would like to see.

What do you think? Which of these changes would make your HubPages journey (addiction) more enjoyable? Do you think that all of them would be beneficial?

This is a great list of ideas Cindy, and I agree with most of them. I voted no on the dividers though, because I would prefer to be able to choose my divider. I think the issue with the vote banners were that they were so close to the advertising, and most were asking the reader to vote up and that seemed like begging to them. I don't think it had to do with the similarity across the board, and most of the banners and dividers I have seen since the change have been tasteful and shouldn't be an issue.

You did it! Awesome! Thanks for referencing my hub! I especially like your idea about being able to put photos on the left side and being able to center poetry. Great ideas. And I would love for HP to provide easy to use borders and separators! I have tried to put lines in-between sections at times. Sometimes it's useful to have more separation. Anyway, great hub. Voted up and all the way across. I thought your magical land of hubpages comments and photo were funny. :-)

I was once a football widow, my husband is now a HubPages widower!! If HubPages was any more addictive there would have to be therapy groups set up worldwide.

You have made some great suggestions to what may improve the HubPages experience. My favourite suggestion that is definitely changes to the profile page. I did actually waste time trying to work out how to change my 'Favourite Topic'.

My viewer duration doesn't show either, but I just assumed that noone had spent that much time viewing my hubs!!

Another good hub homesteadbound.....Voted up and shared.

I don't want this site to become more addictive for me. I'm trying to cut down on the time I spend here because I am not getting anything else done-things that do indeed need to get done. I answered all your polls. Some don't matter to me. Others I would like, most notably the vote down button eliminated and the ability to copy comments into a new hub if the URL is all screwy so as to not lose them.

I would like to see us have the capability to add a banner. You do a beautiful job with these, but I just can't make them. Guess I don't have to proper software. Thanks for more good ideas.

Interesting hub - I would definitely like the "share" and feedback buttons below the comments - occasionally when there have been a lot of comments I have hit "post comment" before I have remembered to scroll up to do the feedback buttons.

Voted up and interesting

millionaire Tips - I like creating different dividers for different things as well. Some colors just work better with certain hub. Or the use of symbols for certain holidays. But I hear so many say they do not know how to create, or they lack the software. I think it would be nice if dividers were provided for those who want to use them but find themselves in this situation. Thanks so much!

I appreciate your enthusiasm. Your work is very vibrant and you are a good ambassador for Texas.

As a graphic artist with some professional publishing experience, I am not crazy about this program. You see it everywhere . . . GoDaddy, WordPress, Facebook, almost every web service with templates. It is Quark. Some will say Drupal. Drupal is Quark, more or less, but it ain't Adobe!

I have had it explained to me by the best. It is out there for the taking. The best layout programs are not. We are stuck with a narrow window. This is not necessarily bad. All magazines follow a strict layout formula. It becomes part of their look.

When a creative person is confronted with a narrow format, they inevitably push the parameters. Many of the hubs you see are very attractive and do well to push the limits. At the end of the day . . . a Hub is a hub. It will not stray far from Big Brother's basic template.

I often wonder why there is a polarity . . . a chasm. We should all just use Macs, or share platforms. I hate Windows ugly file folder cartoon weirdness.

Also, it would really be cool to do it all from here. I like it here. I will be glad to give HubPages and Google and Apple and Hubbers from anywhere a piece of my action. I will make more than enough if I can achieve my goals.

I am an artist. I can't sell my goods from here without putting them on Amazon first, or whatever. I'm not lazy, I am too busy to fool with the internet all day. Let me sell my stuff on HubPages?

debbie roberts - Now that football is almost year round with all the sports channels, I don't feel too bad about making my husband into an HP widower. LOL

I am glad that you enjoyed the hub and could so relate to my addiction. And I am not looking for a cure at the present time. Thanks!

Hooray for getting this out there! I hope someone "up there" sees the suggestions and takes them to heart. I would love to see all of the above options added AND I want different fonts! Im fine with HP being picky what fonts and colors we can use so the site doesnt end up with white pages covered in pale yellow kid script paragraphs. But SOME options would be nice ;)

These are absolutely fantastic ideas! I hope they will implement a few of them. I especially like the dividers and the rated down button. I agree it really does not serve a purpose. Thumbs and shared! :)

I mentioned the left side photo capsule on Victoria Lynn's hub. It would sure be nice to have that. Many times I have wanted to move the photo around.

homesteadbound profile image

homesteadbound 4 years ago from Texas Author

mary615 - It would be nice if they added them for those who are not able to for themselves. Thanks!

Judi Bee - I think these would indeed help us remember to use these buttons more often.

WD Curry 111 - I appreciate what you have shared, although my inexperience is showing when I say that I do not understand all that you have stated. I am new to all of this - well, 7 months new now - and I have only experimented with one other site, and immediately returned here. The other site was much harder to use. So I appreciate what I have here.

Ardie - I agree - a couple other fonts would be nice and provide a different flavor to our hubs. Great idea!

AEvans - I can only write it and hope they (the powers that be) come to read it.

moonlake - I think it would provide some visual appeal to be able to move the photos to the left.

Thank all of you for commenting, and for stopping by! We will have to keep our fingers crossed.

Interesting hub with some very good changes as well. I would love to see some more weapons in my armoury to modify the presentation of my hub though. A little peek on 'Squidoo' will help.

Hi,

I enjoyed this hub as you made good points for improvement to make our writing look more professional.

I would like to be able to center my poems, and move photos around on the page to what ever location I wanted.

Thanks for bringing these great ideas to our attention, it made me think.

Homesteadbound,

I like some of your ideas, especially the one about the Profile pages. At the same time I don't want being a member to become overly complicated either. I don't understand about putting in capsules and frankly have little time to study up on them. I may be in the minority on this, of course, but I'm pretty ignorant about stuff like that.

But the thing about the Down button, yes, sometimes I'm uncomfortable with that thing. There have been a few times I've been tempted to hit it just because the Hub content was either downright hate writing or a blatant professional ad. But with the hateful ones I generally just try to ignore them and not give the author the satisfaction of a response. With the blatant ads I think the Flag button is a better option because it allows you to report the questionable material.

The other idea you proposed that I really like is the one about font choices. That would be darn nice!

There are so many great suggestions here. I hope someone from hubpages takes notice and takes some of these changes seriously. I like that you added the polls, so hubpages can see what we would like.

One of the things I would really like is the center adjust for typing.

I used to always do my citations below the comments, and was very sad when they took that away. I felt that was a much more appealing way to cite my work than above the comments. I really wish they would change that. That was probably one of the changes I liked the least.

I actually think if your hub gets rated down, it doesn't really hurt you. I think, because it provokes emotion it can actually help you... or at least that is what I heard on here several months ago. I'm not sure if it's true though.

As far as the hub metrics, they used to work, I'm not sure why it doesn't anymore. It just doesn't make sense. I wish it did. I only noticed recently when I was checking on a few things, when I realized it no longer works. By the way I voted useful, awesome, interesting and up! Great work!

Your additional metrics, and the right/center justification are the too that stand out for me. Most of the others don't matter so much to me. Interesting hub; apparently I am not as addicted as you are as I haven't given potential improvements any thought. Voted up and interesting.

Yes, Yes, Yes . . . and Yes! I love every single suggestion you have here Cindy. Two other things I'm thinking about are: wouldn't it be great to have a "button" on every hub to "follow" the author instead of assuming they just might click your photo and might go to your profile page. And why couldn't there be an automatic blurb on every hub, say above the comments box, that gives readers the option to join hubpages, referral credit to the author, without having to add it individually to every hub if you'd like. Just my thoughts. I loved all your thoughts!

First off, I love HubPages and am amazed at the many changes that they have made for the upgrades.

I would like to see the map capsule with greater capabilities especially for driving directions. I travel allot between states and there are multiple routes which I would like to highlight. In Lake Geneva for example, there are "back" routes that avoid the tourist travel routes and can save allot of time. Likewise, in Chicago I can drive further a few miles but can save substantial travel time - detailing the reality of the traffic differentials is key to savvy driving in both the urban areas and the tourist areas.

A great read! I'd like to be able to change the basic look of my pages - The font style, colours and background. And I'd love to be able to use html (For gif pictures etc). Apart from this, I enjoy the process of creating new Hubs, I find it quite simple compared with other sites.

I'm all for anything that allows us more formatting options. As a graphic artist I have often been frustrated when I can't get a hub to look like I want it to. But the limitations seem to make me focus more on the actual content of the hub, so in some ways maybe it's a good thing. I don't think HubPages can become any more addictive, famous last words.

homesteadbound profile image

Sherry Hewins - it really is amazing how addictive it is, isn't it? Although I am not a graphic artist, I do like for things to be visually appealing. Thanks so much for sharing your thought on this subject.

Great articles and great ideas. One thing that really bothers me about the Hubpages format is the narrowness. If someone is reading on a Kindle or an Ipad, this would be the ideal format. However, most people view this site on a laptop, which has a wide screen. The wide spaces on the side look so empty and I don't understand why Hubpages is designed this way. That empty space could be used for more content or ad placement. I'd like to be able to add more pictures and I absolutely agree on being able to put a picture on the left. That should be a really easy code fix.
