What Changes Could Make HubPages Even Better? (Even More Addictive?)
Before I move into uncharted territory, I want to state here and now – I enjoy the writing experience (and education) I have received since stumbling into the Magical Land of HubPages. My journey has been stimulating, educational, rewarding, and fun.
Obviously I am quite happy with things the way they are now, but with a few changes I could be ... ecstatic and hopelessly addicted!
A Little Background
Today I read a hub by AEvans, The Tall Tale Signs Of A HubPages Addict, and I had to admit once again that I too am a HubPages addict. I’ve got it bad; and it isn’t always pretty, but it certainly is fun. Currently I am not pursuing a cure.
Yesterday I read a hub by Victoria Lynn, Features I Wish HubPages Would Add, and I agreed with everything she had to say. I realized I also had my own list which I had been formulating in my head. I have often toyed with the idea of writing a hub about it, but had never done so. Then today, I came across a question that addressed this very issue, Adding what features will make HubPages better? (Question has been deleted), and I realized it was time to put my thoughts onto paper.
I must admit, if even some of these changes would be implemented, I would be very pleased. If all of my proposed changes were implemented, I may be hopelessly lost in my HubPages addiction. What a wonderful way to go!!!
The picture capsules have many options, they can be size adjusted: full-width, half-width, and quarter-width.
The capsules can be positioned on the right side or centered if half-width or quarter-width is selected. There is no option for a picture to be placed on the left side of the hub with text wrapping on the right side. I would like to have that option.

Amazon and Ebay Capsules
Although I currently cannot provide you with a hub where I have seen this to be true, it is apparent that once upon a time in the Magical Land of HubPages, capsules (amazon) could be placed below the comments capsule. The few times when I have seen this done on a hub, I felt it provided for a cleaner looking hub. I am suggesting that Amazon capsules and Ebay capsules be given this capability once again.
I think it would be beneficial to all, especially to those writing poems, if the text capsules could be center-justified especially, and right justified additionally.I especially think it would be more visually appealing if the header had the ability to be center-justified on all capsules.
Buttons are one of those touchy subjects. – especially the down button. I believe that the down button serves no purpose other than to be vindictive and mean. If there is a problem with the hub, it should be flagged and the issues addressed. Flagging inappropriate or low quality material benefits everyone within the HubPages community who is writing quality content. I would like to see the elimination of the down button across the board. This elimination would also stop the apparent abuse that I have witnessed when questions are answered.
Do you feel that more buttons would be utilized if located in close proximity to the comments box?See results without voting
Currently there are 3 locations on a hub for someone to show their appreciation of the hub's contents. The first one is the very top of the hub - the Tweet, Facebook Like, Google+ and Pinterest buttons. The next place is often in the middle of the hub, especially after many comments have been made. Here you have the ability to share the hub and to select your reaction to the hub by choosing to click on any or all of 5 buttons - useful, funny, awesome, beautiful and/or interesting. The last place you can interact with the hub contents and author is by leaving a comment.
I can speak from personal experience that once I have commented, I often forget to go back and utilize the other two locations to show my appreciation of the hub, especially those found at the very top.
I think it would be beneficial to the hub author and the overall performance of the hub if all of these options were located in one place on the hub making it easier for the reader/commenter to remember to provide the various forms of feedback.
Do you think having the ability to copy capsules would be a good option to have in your toolbox?See results without voting
Capsules in General
I would like the ability to copy one capsule from one hub to another. Although this is not often needed, should someone decide to change the URL of a hub, this could be very beneficial. Also, if someone wanted to repeat something, such as a copyright warning, this feature would be used often. Capsules with related links to related hubs could also be copied from one hub to another.
Even in the creation of this hub, I thought it would be helpful for me to be able to copy the poll capsule and then edit the question.
Do you think these hub metrics should be available after a hub has aged for one month?See results without voting
Certain aspects of hub metrics has been very frustrating for me. I have been with HubPages a little over seven months and none of my hubs show me the stats for “viewer duration” and “in-coming links”. How long does it take? How long is too long? I venture to state that 7 months is way too long. This information is important for me to be able to judge the efficacy of my hubs.
I am a visual and creative person. I realize that HubPages wants to maintain control of their site to ensure that the viewer receives a valuable experience. There are times that a visual (graphic) divider serves a purpose. It would be great if Hubpages would provide graphics for dividers to those who do not know how to create them for themselves. By providing acceptable dividers, HubPages would also be maintaining the control they want, to insure that the site is viewed as a quality site. Examples of dividers that I have seen used on HubPages are:
The main reason this is a concern for me ....
Remember when many people were adding banners to the bottom of their hubs inviting readers to vote up and comment. Those soon became against the rules and had to be eliminated in all hubs or the hubs could be unpublished. The banners were thought to look unprofessional. I fear the same thing could happen with dividers. What one person considers to be tasteful, another may not.
Do you think we need more options on the profile page - do we need more control over what is displayed?See results without voting
I would like to see the option to be able to choose hubs to spotlight, rather than having someone or something choose for me. I think that having capsules where we would be allowed to pick a predefined tag, chosen by us, that would then be placed in the different categories. Currently, after listing my 6 latest hub, HubPages then goes on to list “Some of homesteadbound's Favorite Topics” without even knowing whether they are actually my favorite topics or not. I am really not sure of the criterion that mandates what gets listed there. Since it is a page that represents me, and it specifically states that it is “some of MY favorite topics” I should have more say about what is listed there.
The Ability to Change Username Without Penalty
I am adding this last item after 8 people have already commented, so I apologize to them for this. I forgot to add this one item, and to me it is the most important.
When I first started at HubPages, I signed up as homesteadbound, not using my real name, Cindy Murdoch. I wish now that I had the ability to change my username to Cindy Murdoch without any penalties. The biggest penalty that I would have to face is the loss of all my followers. I appreciate all my followers so much and would hate to lose any of them. That is an improvement in the system I would like to see.
What do you think? Which of these changes would make your HubPages journey (addiction) more enjoyable? Do you think that all of them would be beneficial?
