What is Fan Mail on Hubpages, how does it benefit to leave insightful messages

By slgckgc

Paying it forward!

Helping people in the hubpages community is the primary goal to achieve when you decide to leave a single comment to yet a single person, and now when you do it for 100's, and potentially 1000's of people, over time such a build up of responses will directly become effective at helping you in the end as well.

This is so, because people can locate your profile link from such a sincere insightful comment, but if it isn't worth much insight, well they may never get to really know who you are, and may not follow your feeds or posts. (Insightful positive interactions is the wisest thing to do while commenting)

This may be done in many ways on the web, but in particular what this hub article will address is how to leave comments for people in their fan mail inbox location. Paying it forward for fellow hubbers actually helps you and towards the end of this hub such a premise will be fully discussed as to how it all works, the benefits, and what makes this hubpages community have such a thing today.

What is Fan mail

Fan mail is something in connection to that of fan following, and after you click that cool green button from off the top of any hubpages profile (Link to new Hubpages Profile Upgrade article) of your fellow hubbers.

  • As soon as you choose to click it, you will be presented with the option to leave a messages, to rate the individuals performance, or reason why you are chosing to follow them, and the message box there will be turned into a fan mail for such a hubber you choose to communicate with by following.
  • Once you fill out the inbox message areas capsule, and press Post Fan Mail button.
  • Make sure to rate the person so that you can leave a fan mail message if you choose to do so, and would like to pay it forward for them, by giving what ever credit you feel they deserve as a fellow hub writer, friend, or what have you.

This is what the screen will look like after clicking Follow button

The Benefits of Fan Following

Following people on hubpages has many unseen benefits, and it pretty much is the way that each and every hubber gets to know one another even better here. Plus it has some highly technical things going on behind the computer screens, that many of us have no clue is actually going on, and this part of the hub will point out quite a bit of them to help make certain that more hubbers can get a better idea of how the hub following system actually works for us all.

  • First after you click that infamous follow button from a users profile, the system will take that into account, and add such a follow you've made into your stats area of hubpages, but it is only visible when you locate it from either on the new hubpages profile area, which will be shown in an image below this text section, and or from the old one as well on the actual follow button itself, once you choose to add a single or multiple hubbers to be followed.
  • Next thing to occur is you will immediately begin to see this person hub communications, and all across the network in differing ways, and even in your email inbox, just as many social networks send email messages from your friends as facebook does, unless you filter such communications out by using the filter options.
  • Hubpages also has such filtering options, and it can help you to prevent from any annoyances you may experience from all of this massive communications you will receive over time, however the pertinent hubpages email from the staff here will still filter itself into your email inbox such as the news letter, and other top priority forms of messaging they shall make if the need became necessary.
  • Following people helps you in many ways as well, because the system will respond to each and every form of communicative efforts you make for those who you choose to follow, as well as to those you choose not to as well, when it comes to hubkarma, the sharing factors here on hubpages, and other pertinent algorithm hubtivity performance calculations, which indeed all affects a hubbers score.
  • If you choose to follow people aimlessly however this will directly impact your hubber score in a negative manner, and the system knows who is being honest, and who isn't. Trust me on that, this is why so many hubbers suffer from seriously low hubber scores, as well as from many other factors as well.

Writing in this area will turn into Fan Mail - Rate folks to do it

You need to click them rating buttons below the message area, so your message you wrote to a hubber you chose to follow, could get sent, and after you click the 'Post Fan Mail' button.

The new hubpages profile following and follower pages

Hubpages just recently had its user profiles upgraded to a much more newer look overall, and functionality as well, where the old hubpages profile was a simple singular webpage, with basic functionality.

The new profiles are fully equipped with interchangeable pages for fan followings, and followers you may choose to have here as a hubber. This will make all the difference in a day for those seeking to look a bit deeper into how a hubpages author goes at following certain individuals, these pages hold the instrumental key to access many insightful hubbers, who all seem to go the extra distance for many of us here on hubpages.

This is something that many hubbers may have no clue exist as of today, and maybe because they either choose not to get the upgrade, or may have just joined hubpages and haven't yet learned of all its hidden functionality, screen changes, and sharing elements as well as communicative aspects which will add up to such a thing as hubtivity here and being able to quickly detect others we follow & their activities in response to making all forms of communications here on hubpages.

The New Profiles are not just good looking they have new functionality-

Below will be two screen shots, providing an image of how these new following screens look, and if you go to a particular hubbers icon, you may click onto it, to arrive at their profile as well, and give their hubs a try, or anything else that their profile attracts you to conduct there.

Just be mindful that if you choose to follow a person aimlessly, without communicating to them in some way prior to such (Like reading their hub & commenting, participating in forum discussions they've come up with, answering questions in the Q&A they've created etc...), it shall indeed count against you as a sort of form of avoiding the obvious, which is the sharing elements that are definitely in place here on hubpages, and are being tracked by the hubpages system (Bots & algorithm analytic tracking) , thus damaging your hubber score.

The system further detects of such activity or hubtivity, and begins to rate you as a hubber who is aimlessly following, hence rendering the lowering of your overall score. So, with that being stated, you might wanna also try to leave some cool insightful comments for folks, as soon as you meet them digitally, and in any of the many hubpages areas for making such communication prior to you trying to follow anyone here. (People aren't dumb here, there's many experts so make your comment count, read their articles, questions.)

Excellent hub. I was wondering about this. When I read a good hub, I would like to follow that person but the different topics the person writes about is not necessarily my interest. What do you suggest? The other thing I tend to do is to follow topics and when I have read a couple of hubs and see it is not really my interest to unfollow the topic.

Hi CloudExplorer - Yes, I believe it is imperative to leave fan mail if you choose to follow someone, as it is just a courteous thing to do and say hello - making a connection. It is almost like just common courteousy do so. Very useful hub, especially for new hubbers who may not have realized this aspect. In His Love, Faith Reaper

@rgmg50, Thank you so much for your insight here, I think following a person doesn't only mean to read their hubs, so if you choose not to follow their hubs per say, then maybe check out other activities they are into here or elsewhere, and especially f that hubber really does interest you.

There's many other ways of forming communications here amongst fellow hubbers, and you can also communicate with the on social platforms such as FB, G+, and elsewhere if you wish to do so.

This is my best advise, and it will get tough to answer everyone over time for sure, so managing your networking activities will definitely go through a sort of evolution of its very own.

Good Luck and welcome to hubpages, oh and its nice to have met you here on hubpages.

@Faith Reaper, Thank you Faith for your awesome comment you just left for me there, that was cool of you as you do regularly for me.

Fan Mail is the key to smarter communications, plus the whole paying it forward factors here which starts out many great online friendships, as well as potential partnerships, because you never know who you will meet today on hubpages.

Following other Hubbers through fan mail is so important. The only problem is that I, and I imagine many others are following more Hubbers than we have time for. Also, I have had people sign up to follow me and yet never see their name one time in a comment. I think reading the hubs and making a useful comment really establishes relationships. I just wish I had more time.

You make some excellent points in this hub and it is certainly very useful.

Interesting hub. Most novice hubbers follow without reading the work. I did the same at first. But I will likely follow another author if they comment on my work.

I like the dividers on your hub. How did you do them?

Interesting, Cloud Explorer. I agree that many follow without reading...reading and following, commenting are essential to hubbing success, as you've pointed out. The more insightful the comment, the better it is for all parties, but we need all hubbers to realize this. Thanks Cloud Explorer. Votes up, away.

Mike- I've always left fan mail for anyone I've chosen to follow first. On new hubbers, it may simply be a "looking forward to reading more from you as you publish" as well as a "if you need any help just contact me" type, but always something. I have made it a habit of checking hub activity in the profile of new followers before automatically becoming a follower of theirs. Some will sit there and follow 20 or more people in a couple of hours. They're either desperate to make friends, or mass following to hopefully draw an audience. Those, I'm very careful on.

Anyway, enough rambling. Great Hub as always! You explained several areas I'm vague on extremely well!

Thanks @Pamela99 for your very useful insight and positive feedback on my hub here, I enjoy leaving Fan mail as well, and mainly because if I'm reading a hub about 90% of the time now, its because I am totally engrossed in the subject matter, and because the hubber who wrote it appealed to me in many ways in their style of writing to keep me locked on their page.

Paying it forward in that way also benefits us in the long run in terms of hubber score, but also when it comes to people seeing our hubtivity, and other visible factors of leaving digital foot prints sort of speak, after commenting on that cool Fan Mail area.

CloudExplorer profile image

CloudExplorer 4 years ago from New York City Author

@AudreyHowitt, actually its not the Fan mail thats the issue, its following hubbers aimlessly without making other communications prior to hitting the follow button.

You must have misunderstood some part of the hub I guess, its all good though Audrey, you get what I was putting down I hope now. Thanks for giving my hub here a good read, and commenting

What about people with more than 1000 followers or followings? Doesn't that get to be way too much work? Also how do you update your profile? I always leave fan mail if I am going to follow someone. Great hub for especially new writers like I am still. Thanks for all this really helpful information. UP

@A.A. Zavala, hey bro thanks for that cool comment and for checking out my hub here.

In response to how I made the dividers, I used a flash editor program known as 'Wix', its a drag and drop editor, and if you wanna learn how to use it add me as a facebook friend from off of my profile here, and I'll be glad to add you as a friend and show you how for sure. (Message me first on my FB inbox, so I know what profile your adding, if you choose to connect from there)

@rcrumple, Thanks bro for the awesome insight up above that comment was not rambling to me, I love it when folks leave me a good message to respond to, and I'm sure you do as well.

Sometimes I leave close to a hub worth of words myself, so its all good RC. Chat with soon.

Hello @carol7777, the more number of followers you have the better pretty much, because you will receive much higher stats in the end. The who following, and leaving fan mail info here is the same for everyone, no matter if you have 10 followers or 10,000.

I think your getting it confused with trying to manage comments and all, this hub is about leaving insightful fan mail once you choose to follow someone, and each time you do so, it helps both you and you're fellow hubbers you left such a message for, whenever you feel the need to follow someone, and that's all.

I hope this clarifies any misunderstandings you may have had Carol.

Great Hub - I've found with the new layout I can't see who I'm following that may now be inactive without scrolling down and down. I usually unfollow anyone who hasn't written more than one Hub, etc. As far as fan mail - I usually leave some even if it is only to welcome them to hubPages.

CloudExplorer profile image

CloudExplorer 4 years ago from New York City Author

@suziecat7, thanks for that cool comment you left me, wow I never thought about that one, but I recently started removing inactive huggers from off of my Pearltrees collection, so I feel what your stepping in here, LOL.

Hi Mike,

Super useful hub here on following and followers. It is so true about mindless following, people just following for the sake of following it seems. I have always tried to follow those whose work appeals and will always leave fan mail when I follow. When someone chooses to follow me I always check out their activity and profile before I read their work or follow. Thanks for the comprehensive guide here including the new profile workings! voted up, useful, interesting and shared:-)

This was such an informative hub, goodness I learned a lot. Some of the things I was intuitively doing, i.e. not aimlessly following people without reading and leaving comments, but the tips on fan mail when following were useful. Great hub!

CloudExplorer 4 years ago from New York City Author

Thanks @Suzie HQ, for choosing to share with me here in my hub, and for leaving me such a nice comment as you done up there. Following folks isn't an easy task and not on any given network, it is very time consuming, but the true reward comes from us interacting for sure.

I will do my best to make it to your locations as well, chat with you soon for sure in the near future, and in your hubs as well.

This is all new information for me. I'd never thought much about how fan mail could affect our Hubber score. I have noticed that since I've started following only those whose Hubs I've read and enjoyed, my score has stayed consistently higher. I'm going to run over and look at my "following" and "followers" pages. I haven't seen them since the update and found the new profile interesting, indeed! Thanks so much for very useful, interesting information.

@Thundermama, thanks for your input here, I only learned a bit of this info recently, about two months back or so, I wish I had known of such when I first became a hubber even though I was also following of all the rules back then till now.

Knowing is surely half the battle indeed, I just hope more folks can follow suit as well for their own sakes, and also for paying it forward purposes, and sharing honestly with good intentions & integrity.

@vespawoolf, Yeah Its tough learning all about so many hidden features here on hubpages, and most of it I located by reading from fellow hubbers all along my journey here, and so yup we all live and learn something new each and every day right!

Thanks bro for the cool visit and for sharing with me, it was cool of you.

I love connecting with people by comments and fan mail - - since I like receiving comments, I can only assume everyone else does too, so unless I am very short of time, or didn't especially like the hub, I do try and leave a sign that I have been there and enjoyed it.

I noticed very early on that although my hub scores for individual hubs are mainly in the 70's, my Profile score is usually 89 - 93, and when it goes down, I make a particular effort to bring it up by becoming more active in the community, which always seems to work .....but I do sometimes forget, especially when there's a lot going on in my life outside HubPages!

CloudExplorer profile image

CloudExplorer 4 years ago from New York City Author

@Diana Grant, I feel much of the same, and by commenting with insightful words of kindness for those who truly deserve such feedback from their hub writing performances here, and hubbing social activities of sharing and pure awesomeness, it definitely make a difference for us hubbers for sure.

Many of us are instantly thrilled to meet new folks, to share with them what we know, what we have to offer, and to simply be in awe at how we can manage to connect with them today. So yes indeed fanmail plays all those parts for us all as well, and the hubber score shows it too.

Thanks for providing me such a awesome comment up there, I will make it my business to pay your location a visit as well, chat with ya soon Diana, and nice to meet ya here on hubpages.

It's not easy at times, but the benefits come when I know that people are indeed learning something, I have learned or that I have to offer to them.
