Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow
New HubPage rules and being Idle
HubPages brought in a new system whereby hubs that don’t get traffic got classed as ‘Idle.’ They are then removed from search engine results and to all intents and purposes they cease to exist on the Internet though they can still be found amongst your hubs and you can edit them.
In our accounts we could see which hubs have been classed as Idle because they had the letters ‘zz’ against them. When it was first introduced I was shocked and saddened to find I had a lot in this sorry state.
It has been argued that this has been done to improve the site after very definite problems with low traffic and low incomes for hubbers had been caused by the Google Panda and subsequent updates. HubPages management say they are doing all they can to make the site better so we all will benefit in the long run.
It is argued that if a hub is not getting much traffic then it is not what Internet users are searching for. Its quality as a piece of writing is not being criticised, just its potential for getting views and thereby earning its writer some money. And after all, most of us on the site are hoping to make income from out online writings and articles.
This system has now been changed to 'Featured' or not featured but the hubs that are not featured are in the same state as idled ones.

Those that agree with Idle hubs
Many hubbers have welcomed this new idling system and claim that it is helping them to put together better hubs and by editing the ones that are idled to improve them. By tweaking a hub that has been idled you can get it active again after a short term pending its approval.
Some of those people who agree with the new rules are also getting rid of idle hubs and regarding this as a learning experience. They are grateful to HubPages.

Those against Idle hubs
Other hubbers, and I am one of the most vocal, argue that perfectly good articles have been classed as Idle and that this is very annoying, especially when you spent a lot of time putting them together and know there is nothing actually wrong with the hubs.
I have hubs that have been idled that have at one time been published in hard copy magazines so I know they are of a professional standard. Others are about what I regard as very important subjects that I wanted to write about in an effort to get information out to the public.
What do you think of the new Idling procedure?

Getting traffic to your hubs
It all comes down to traffic though. If the hubs are not getting any views then they are likely to get the zzs against them and taking out of operation. To ensure you get good traffic it is thought that current news subjects are what should be written about. If it’s past its newsworthiness then it is unlikely anyone will be searching for it. That is the argument presented. Also if it is something very obscure with not much known about it or interest taken by the public offline or online then the chances are it will not do well!
I am not happy with seeing so many of my quality articles being classed as unfit to be published on HubPages now so am removing them to other sites such as Wizzley. However, I have made a note of what not to write about on HubPages in future. I know what is likely to get the Idled treatment. Here, coming up, are the subjects and terms not to use here if you want the all important traffic and for your hubs to be safe.
Flying Saucers v UFOs
Flying Saucers? Don’t use this as a keyword in your article or title. People stopped calling them flying saucers long ago and nowadays they are UFOs. I am old-fashioned and still use the old term but it has not served me well here. Flying Saucers are likely to get Idled!
Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd
Celebrities who died are not a good topic unless it is recent news. Don’t write about famous people who died some time ago. The chances are all the tributes and obituaries were in the news then and now there is a lot less talk about them on the Internet.
Syd Barrett, the brilliant founder of Pink Floyd, who went on to have a very erratic and eccentric solo career before his death, is surprisingly not recommended as a good subject for a hub. I had a very detailed hub about him Idled. Pink Floyd would be OK to write about here but not Syd.
Despite his very large fanbase and countless people who admired him, Syd isn’t making the news any more. Some people have never heard of him anyway. I have discovered that at gigs when I have announced that I am doing a cover of a Syd Barrett song and have asked if there are any Syd Barrett fans here.
Remote mountain villages
On Tenerife there are many very remote mountain villages but because plenty of tourists don’t go to them not many people know anything about them and hardly anyone is searching for them on the Internet. Hubs about the hamlets of Taborno, Las Carboneras and Erjos have all been given zzs.
Now I have to admit that the majority of people on this island don’t know where these places are either and may have never heard of them. I am unusual and like to seek out such locations. I do a lot of walking in the country but the majority of people do not go in for this and it is that majority you are hoping will be looking for keywords used in your hubs.
They are unlikely to be Googling for any of these places, picturesque and wonderful as they may be. The lesson here is to write about tourist resorts because that is where all the holiday-makers go. Places off the beaten-track are not a good idea to write about here. They simply do not get enough traffic on the Internet and in searches via Google or other leading search engines.
Forest fires are only newsworthy when they are happening. The terrible blazes that took place on Tenerife and La Gomera back in August and that made international news at the time, were of interest then but not anymore. Same goes for droughts and other freak weather. People were searching for news on these subjects at the time but are not interested months or years later.
Unsigned Musicans and Unpublished Writers
Don’t bother writing about any of your friends who are unsigned if they are singer-songwriters or in bands. Hubs about Spanish singer and artist Priscilla Hernandez, Canadian songwriter Daniel Iorio and American rapper Mikey J all came into this category. There are not enough people interested and sadly that is why they are unsigned and not household names. It matters not whether they are very talented or not. If hardly anyone is searching for their names then they make bad subjects for hubs and will get Idled. This of course, also applies to poets, artists and writers, anyone, in fact, who is not already famous.

What not to write about
So there you have it. Some of the topics I have found are not a good idea to write about on HubPages. Remember if it is, or they are, dead, in the past, hardly known about, remote, unpopular, or unpublished, then people using search engines are not likely to be looking for any of the keywords associated with these subjects. Your poetry is also likely to be classed as Idle here even if it took you a long time to write it. Poems and your own song lyrics are not good subjects for hubs now.
Create your hubs about anything that will get good traffic that conforms with other Hubpages guidelines and rules. And good luck!

Update on Featured on not featured hubs
HubPages changed things again here and now hubs are either classed as 'Featured' or not. If they are not featured they are in the same state as Idle. Instead of a zz being shown against them they now have a blank space while featured hubs have the letter H! The status is shown in the 'Featured' column in Accounts.

New changes at HubPages have caused a system where hubs can be featured or not. Of course, we all want our hubs to be the featured ones so we get the traffic but what can be done to achieve this?
